Recall Date: Dec 20, 2017
Safety Issue:

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2016-2017 Ram 3500 Cab Chassis with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of less than 10,000 lbs, 2011-2017 Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 Cab Chassis vehicles, 2009-2017 Ram 1500 and 2010-2017 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks, all equipped with a column shifter. With the pin in the open position, the transmission can be shifted out of PARK into any gear without pushing the brake pedal or having the key in the ignition.

Potential Risk:
Being able to shift the transmission without pushing the brake pedal and/or without a key in the ignition can increase the risk of an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in personal injury or a crash.

Defect Description:

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

Potential Consequences:

I HAVE BEEN HAVING ELECTRICAL ISSUES WITH THIS VEHICLE FROM THE BEGINNING. IT HAS BEEN BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP 6 TIMES FOR MORE THEN A DAY EACH TIME. THEY CONTINUE TO TELL ME ITS FIXED, CHANGE SENSORS, MIRRORS, SEATS ETC. THIS LAST TIME WAS DANGEROUS, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED TO 40MPH WITH MY FOOT OFF THE GAS AND WHILE IN PARK IT REDLINED, REVVING THE ENGINE UNTIL I SHUT IT OFF. THIS IS THE 7TH TIME NOW ITS AT THE DEALERSHIP. IT HAS BEEN THERE FOR 3 DAYS NOW AND THEY CAN NOT TELL ME ANYTHING. I FEEL AS THOUGH I AM GETTING NO HELP WITH THIS SITUATION.

Potential Consequences:

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 RAM 1500. WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE SERVICE ANTI LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE AUTOMATICALLY SLOWED DOWN, CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP, AND SHIFTED INTO PARK. THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO SHIFT THE GEAR BACK INTO DRIVE, BUT WAS UNABLE TO DO SO. THE VEHICLE WAS STILL RUNNING WHEN IT CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE CONTACT HAD TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED. IN ORDER TO PLACE THE VEHICLE ON THE TOW TRUCK, THE VEHICLE HAD TO HAVE A SWITCH UNDERNEATH THE BOTTOM FLIPPED FOR THE VEHICLE TO BE ATTACHED TO THE TOW TRUCK. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TOWED TO THE DEALER (TELEGRAPH CHRYSLER DODGE JEEP, 12000 TELEGRAPH ROAD, TAYLOR, MI 48180) WHERE THE TECHNICIAN INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE KEPT THERE IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS KEPT AT THE DEALER FOR FOUR DAYS UNTIL THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO REGAIN ACCESS. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE FAILURE CODES CONFIRMED THE FAILURE, BUT THE CAUSE COULD NOT BE DETERMINED. IN ORDER TO GET THE VEHICLE TO SWITCH GEARS, THE TECHNICIAN DISCONNECTED AND THEN RECONNECTED THE BATTERY. AFTERWARDS, THE VEHICLE DROVE NORMALLY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE REPAIR COULD NOT BE REPEATED A SECOND TIME AND COULD NOT DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE COMPLAINT WOULD NOT BE ESCALATED AND WAS OFFERED A FREE TIRE ROTATION. THE VIN SEARCH REVEALED THERE WERE NO RECALLS ASSOCIATED WITH THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 26,000.

POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

IN SLOWING DOWN TO APPROXIMATELY 2-3MPH THE TRANSMISSION "JUMPS" BEFORE COMING TO A STOP. IT MATTERS NOT IF THE ENGINE IS COLD OR WARM. FEELS LIKE THE WHOLE TRANSMISSION IS GOING TO FALL OUT OF THE TRUCK. ALSO, MIMICS THE REAR END OF THE TRUCK COMING FORWARD TO THE FRONT OF THE TRUCK. ALSO, WHEN CHANGING GEARS FROM A HIGHER SPEED TO LOW OR LOW TO HIGH, THE TRANSMISSION SEEMS TO GET "DUMB" AND NOT KNOW WHICH GEAR IT NEEDS TO BE IN. AFTER THE FEW SECONDS OF "CONFUSION" IT SEEMS TO CORRECT ITSELF AND GO TO THE GEAR IT NEEDS TO BE IN. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE I BOUGHT THE TRUCK IN MAY OF 2016. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND OF COURSE THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING. IT HAPPENS EVERY TIME I DRIVE IT.

IN COLD WEATHER THE ELECTRIC DRIVER SIDE WINDOW REPEATEDLY DISCONNECTED FROM THE TRACK. THIS CAUSES THE WINDOW TO FREE FALL INTO THE DOOR WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED. FCA CLAIMS THIS IS A SAFETY FEATURE AND WILL NOT COVER REPEATED REPAIR UNDER WARRANTY. DEALER SUGGESTION TO PREVENT PROBLEM IS TO NOT USE WINDOW IN WEATHER BELOW 32 DEGREES.
