ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

When starting and stopping the engine an awful noise is heard, it sounds like metal is grinding for about 2 seconds. Also on one occasion the electrical system seems to go haywire, as my power lift gate would not work. I tried several things to include turning the vehicle on and off, pressing the lift gate button several times, pressing my clicker, and pressing the lift gate button in the cabin area of the vehicle, to no avail. I finally had to pull the lift gate down, while this was occuring the inside the vehicle on the lift gate lights would turn on and off it was the strangest thing.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

I was driving on a major interstate and my car suddenly stopped shifting the gears to allow for faster speed. RPM's were going up to 6 and 7 and the fastest I could go was 30mph. I confirmed my vehicle was only in Drive, and was not in a "sport mode that allows for manua shifting". Was able to safely get off the interstate and pull over, This could have caused a accident. Shut down vehicle and restarted and then performed correctly. Called dealership and they stated they wouldn't be able to get me in for 3 weeks and if the vehicle is now not doing it and issue can not be duplicated there wouldn't be anything they can do.

VISIBILITY/WIPER

Potential Consequences:

Wind shield fluid is not dispensing onto windshield, wipers operated but no fluid dispensed. With salt on roads visibility out the wind shield became nearly zero. There were no symptoms of an issue before it happened, no warning lamps or messages. Fluid would dispense to rear window meaning system is operational and there is fluid in the tank. Windshield washer fluid tube runs under the insulation on hood of car, found the tube has become disconnected from T-joint under the hood and fluid was running into engine compartment and not on wind shield. Defect happened at ~20,000 miles on car.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Potential Consequences:

I have a 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve. I acquired it in February of last year. I feel my vehicle is not performing according to specifications. I’ve taken it in for service numerous times. The sales manager test drove it with my husband and acknowledged there is something causing it to vibrate at certain speeds. The service manager test drove it with my husband and also acknowledged there is something causing it to vibrate at certain speeds. Jeep agreed to have a technician look at it and we asked if we could be present to drive it with the tech and were told yes. The Jeep technician was dispatched, in the middle of the night, to test drive it and reported there was nothing wrong with it and my case was closed. We were not even given the chance to drive with the tech or discuss the situation. I also experience what I call “lag braking”. I will press the brake pedal and it feels like it’s going to come to a stop and then just before you stop it gives way and I have to press it harder, really put my foot into it. This doesn’t happen all the time just randomly. Additionally, the passenger side folding mirror has been damaged since day one. They say they have replaced it 2 or 3 times and it still rubs the plastic so there are marks on the mirror arm when it is closed. I was told there is nothing they can do about it..... I have had two other Jeep Grand Cherokees with retractable mirror and neither one of them had that happen, ever. I’ve been on several Jeep forums and have read numerous posts about the same or similar incidents. I’m wondering if someone from NHTSA would be willing to drive it and report back to Jeep and to the public about their findings. It’s a shame that I’m driving one of their top of the line SUVs that makes me nauseous and dizzy when I drive it. Thanks in advance for your support.

POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

When the transmission warms up to operating temp, the first gear shift is extremely rough from a stop. It is most noticeable when accelerating on a highway. It is even worse when utilizing Sport mode. The best way to describe it, is a jerking motion or the transmission failing to shift in time. This is an everyday occurrence and not a random one. My concern is the transmission will fail in the middle of driving on a busy highway. The car has been to the dealer and according to them, this is “normal operation”. It has not been inspected by anyone other than a dealer and no warning lamps are on. This has been an ongoing issue since the date of purchase.

VISIBILITY/WIPER

Potential Consequences:

The vehicles climate control/hvac system has inadequate ventilation that prevents air movement to occur. In cold tempatures all all of the vehicles windows fog and ice over form the inside. This results in the driver loosing visibility out of any window. During cold weather conditions, the rear passengers, windows, and rear wind window, even with defrost drawn ice up immediately along with the double moon roof. Problem limits, visibility, making the vehicle, unsafe to drive due to the limited visibility caused by this inadequate and design deficiency. There are no heating system vents besides in the front dash of the vehicle due to the moonroof. The rear climate controls do nothing to remedy of the issue . When I reported the issue to JEEP corporate immediately after purchase, they acknowledged the design deficiency, and that they were working corrected for future models. This is unacceptable and creates a hazardous driver condition for any vehicle. Had I know this prior to purchase I would have never bought the vehicle as there is no remedy.

Driver Display goes out every couple days (or when it feels like it) Display goes blank and you must stop and turn off car to get it back on. All controls, as camera, gps, handsfree calls are not operational when the display goes into a reboot mode and then blank, under you pull over and shut the car off, turn it back on and then it's back to normal. Sometimes it just reboots while driving of no reason while on a call, following directions using GPS etc. Safety concern since while driving driver (myself) while alone in car will try to get back working if I'm on a call or following the GPS. I know it's my fault for doing so while driving but under certain circumstances it human nature to try getting it all working again when you're lost or in a area you're not familiar with and could cause a major accident or put my life or someone else's in danger trying to fix it while driving. Most times is works normal for like a week or two, then its starts over. Deal told me it's nothing they can fix since many may have the same issues and it's a software problem that only comes from over the air waves. Well, Jeep keeps telling there's a update coming every quarter and when that quarter comes and I still have issues they tell me "oh there's another update coming in the beginning of the next quarter etc... Been told this 3 times now, and the latest now is there's a update coming in the 1st quarter of 2024 to correct that issue

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

Potential Consequences:

I rented a 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee at our local airport (Monterey, California) and drove it to Los Angeles and back for a total of about 700 miles over four days. I am an experienced driver and have been working on cars all my adult life. On several occasions, I attempted to the use the cruise control function to set a fixed speed for my journey. In doing so, I would first turn cruise control ON, accelerate to the desired speed, then MOMENTARILY press the SET button, at which point the vehicle would 'remember' my current speed and maintain this speed indefinitely. Nothing unusual about this, and it's how I've used cruise control in multiple cars over the years. Now, as in a lot of cruise control systems, one may use the SET button to cause the vehicle to accelerate, instead of pressing on the gas pedal. This is also a common way of doing things. One holds down the SET button, the vehicle increases speed, and once the vehicle gets to the desired speed, one releases the button and the current speed is maintained. But not in this Jeep Grand Cherokee. Instead, I found that if I pressed and held down the SET button for a few seconds that the vehicle would CONTINUE TO ACCELERATE long after I had released the SET button. For example: Traveling at 75 mph, I held the SET button for two or three seconds and released it. The vehicle began to accelerate at about two seconds, but continued accelerating for a period of twenty seconds, until I finally stepped on the brake, at which time the vehicle had reached 91 mph. In my run to LA and back, I tested the system several times. In the above example, I used my cell phone to make a video recording of the event. I'm glad to share this with NHTSA staff. My general belief is that this is not a one-off defect. It is the way the system is designed to behave, and it's unsafe. There are a few comments on the web pertaining to 2021 & 2022 Jeep products that support what I have said here.
