4.8M Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: May 17, 2018
Safety Issue:

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Dodge Journey, Charger and Durango, RAM 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis (more than 10,000lb), 4500 Cab Chassis and 5500 Cab Chassis, Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and Chrysler 300, 2014-2019 RAM 1500, 2015-2018 Dodge Challenger, 2015-2017 Chrysler 200, 2016-2018 RAM 3500 Cab Chassis (less than 10,000 lb), 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica and 2018 Jeep Wrangler vehicles. These vehicles are being recalled to address a defect that could prevent the cruise control system from disengaging. If, when using cruise control, there is a short circuit within the vehicle's wiring, the driver may not be able to shut off the cruise control either by depressing the brake pedal or manually turning the system off once it has been engaged, resulting in either the vehicle maintaining its current speed or possibly accelerating.

Potential Risk:
If the vehicle maintains its speed or accelerates despite attempts to deactivate the cruise control, there would be an increased risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the software, and perform a software flash on the engine or powertrain control module, free of charge. The recall began June 4, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.

Recall Date: Feb 8, 2018
Safety Issue:

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2017-2018 RAM 1500, 2500, 3500, 3500 Cab Chassis, 4500 Cab Chassis, and 5500 Cab Chassis vehicles, all equipped with a column shifter. Pushing the brake pedal for prolonged periods when the vehicle is running and in PARK may cause the Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) pin to stick in the open position. With the pin in the open position, the transmission can be shifted out of PARK into any gear without pushing the brake pedal or having the key in the ignition.

Potential Risk:
Being able to shift the transmission without pushing the brake pedal and/or without a key in the ignition can increase the risk of an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in personal injury or a crash.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

Purchased this vehicle 8 months ago and from what I have been reading online this is an ongoing problem with Dodge Ram 2500 and this ABS module electrical issue is considered the most expensive part fixing the Dodge Ram, so how is it fair to the consumer to have to pay 3,000 for an electrical issue less than one year ago and only 35,000 miles on vehicle. There are thousands of post with the same complaint on the same year truck with the same issue. The Dodge Dealership said today that it is a safety issue because when we go to use our brakes quickly or for Emergency they will not work and they could lock up. we bought this vehicle to tow our fifth wheel. It makes me feel unsafe and not fair to have to feel this way. These days we can barely afford our vehicles and homes more less to have to pay for an electrical issue that is the cause of Dodge Ram and there Manufacture Issue. They need to be responsible for there faulty parts.

SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

I am receiving two messages: Service Electronic Braking System and Service Antilock Braking System. The cruise control and trailer braking system will not operate under this condition. I tow a 5th wheel trailer. This is a common problem on Ram trucks. The local dealer has quoted me between $1000 and $1600 for the repair. I have a friend who had the problem at 36,000 miles. Ram had made a change to both parts causing this problem (part numbers 68143491AB and 68347098AB) Why are customers having to pay for an obvious design flaw? I was told there is no plan for a recall at this time.

Defect Description:

STEERING

Potential Consequences:

Recall for the drag link on this series of 2500 trucks calls for welding an adjustable part of the steering linkage - the drag link jam nuts, rendering that part non-adjustable. Once welded, to then perform an alignment the welds would need to be carefully ground off, alignment work performed, and then once again everything re-torqued and welded back in place per the recall advisory steps. Also consider the effects of welding, grinding, and welding again and again over the life of this HD truck. An alignment is critical to towing thousands of pounds, pulling to the side and overcorrecting while towing a load because a simple alignment is no longer possible is arguably just as dangerous as the original issue attempted to be mitigated (loss of steering). The correct fix for this safety issue is to replace this drag link component, not render the truck unusable. A new drag link without this issue has been engineered and made available for sale, but my VIN says its not eligible for it as a covered recall repair. This is an OEM design failure with a short-sighted workaround that renders the vehicle useless over time; seems ridiculous for the customer to be financially responsible for this failure. Attached photo is of the welded, "recall completed", drag link on my now horribly misaligned truck.

SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

During a routine tire rotation, the service technician advised me that the brake calipers appeared to be swelling when heating up and were cutting grooves into the wheels. He proceeded to show me the damage and indicated that this could result in a catastrophic event if not corrected. I immediately took the vehicle to the dealership and informed them of the issue. It was looked at and agreed that was the problem. I was advised to contact the manufacturer to start a claim. So far, that is of no benefit. They are basically telling me that until a catastrophic event occurs, there is nothing they will do. I am still trying to get them to cover it. These are all factory parts and I am the sole owner of the vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

The ABS light constantly beeps and flashes. It is available for inspection. We are not sure if it is unsafe. We had it hooked up to the code machine from a dealership and they said it definitely needs to be fixed. Yes it has been confirmed. Not inspected from the Ram dealership yet because I was hoping it would be at no charge. We just bought the truck 8 months ago with 30,000 miles. There should be no problems. The lights come on every time you start the truck and blink more when you go over bumps .

SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

At 30,076 miles, I began to receive 2 warning notifications in the truck’s instrument panel: “Service Electronic Braking System” and an amber ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) warning light. Both warnings include a loud audible warming when they illuminate, appear when driving the truck, but seem completely random in nature. Either or both notifications illuminate and the warning lights stay on for as little as a few seconds to as long as a minute. The frequency of the audible and visual warning lights is also random. On some driving trips, they may appear up to 6-7 times each minute. On other trips they may occur 2-3 times over several miles/minutes. driving/stopping on wet pavement could be problematic because the ABS, Cruise control, and built-in trailer brake controller ALL stop working when the warning lights come on. If hauling a very heavy trailer, and the trailer brake controller fails, then this could cause a fatal condition for not only the driver of the truck, but all those in the vicinity should a sudden slow down or stop be needed.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Potential Consequences:

Today while driving the vehicle, the ABS light came on and other lights followed. The vehicle began to loose power. Pulled in the driveway and the vehicle was trying to catch on fire. There was smoke coming from the hood and the front passenger tire was what appeared to be melted/ bent away from the truck. I was able to spray water on the truck engine and stop the smoke and heat. Once I was certain the truck was not burning, I contacted the local chief of police and met with him to make a report. I had the vehicle for about a month. I had just replaced my 2014 dodge diesel that ignited during the night on March 22,2022. After an extensive fire investigation from the insurance department was undetermined of the cause. The insurance company reached out to Dodge which insisted there have been no problems. That vehicle had been parked for 10 hours. I have researched the multiple incidents involving 2013-2021 dodge diesels which consist of parked vehicles and vehicles being driven that have ignited. This can not be a coincidence that I have had 2 dodge diesel 2500 trucks that have this happen in a matter of 2-3 months. I am now left to report another fire claim on my insurance. I need answers and Dodge should be looking into these incidents. I contacted dodge direct when this happened today and they took my information and said it would be forwarded to “Tamara” to investigate and of no surprise, no return call. I have spent a lot of time and money on now 2 diesels. Both vehicles were well maintained and this should not happen. I was at least able to detach the trailer this time, get the horses to safety, and remove my personal belongings. The previous incident burned a new Easley Gooseneck trailer and all my belongings, which weren’t covered my insurance. These incidents should be investigated before there is a serious injury or even worse a death.I am attaching pictures from both incidents.

SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

At 13,000 miles, I began to receive 2 warning notifications in the truck’s instrument panel: “Service Electronic Braking System” and an amber ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) warning light. Both warnings include an audible “dinging sound” when they illuminate, appear when driving the truck, but are completely random in nature. The frequency of the audible and visual warning lights is also incredibly random. On some driving trips, they may appear up to 6-7 times each hour. On other driving trips they may happen 2-3 times over several miles/hours. Some trips there are no warnings in an hour’s time. I took my truck to a trusted repair facility and was told that the 2 parts leading to the warnings (HSU-Hydraulic Unit and ABS Module) should not need replacement until 50,000-60,000 miles, so the warning lights were reset. He also informed me that this has been a known issue by Ram per an internet search, yet no recalls have been issued to date. Since I tow a trailer, I asked about the safety of not replacing the 2 parts and was told that driving/stopping on wet pavement could be problematic if the parts were not replaced. The warning lights issue persisted despite the resets, so I took the truck to a Ram dealership service center. They confirmed that no safety recall were issued to address this problem and I was quoted $1,500.00 for them to replace the 2 parts. I can provide that paperwork, if needed. My own internet search of Ram Forums confirmed what my repair facility found as well. It appears there has been widespread complaints from other Ram owners since at least 2014 and many are at a loss as to why Ram refuses to address the problem. Many had the repairs done out of sheer frustration with hearing repeated audible “dinging sounds” while driving, plus out of concern for their personal safety.

Additional Notes:

At 13,000 miles, I began to receive 2 warning notifications in the truck’s instrument panel: “Service Electronic Braking System” and an amber ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) warning light. Both warnings include an audible “dinging sound” when they illuminate, appear when driving the truck, but are completely random in nature. Either or both notifications illuminate and the warning lights can stay on for as little as afew seconds to as long as a minute. SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

The truck had this issue at 7800 miles when I purchased it and now at 33000 miles I have it diagnosed. The ABS control module and hydraulic control module have failed which causes the ABS to not work. This has caused the tires to skid during hard braking or winter weather. Luckily, I am aware of this issue and can anticipate braking needs and adjust accordingly.

SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

The service electronic braking system message came on and the traction control icon also illuminated while descending a steep grade while towing my 14’ livestock trailer. Noticed the trucks factory trailer brake controller stopped working when the traction control light came on. It’s not a good feeling coming down a mountain road with cattle in the trailer and all of a sudden no trailer brakes. Got it slowed down and pulled over. Turned the truck off and when I started it back up the icon was gone and trailer brake was functioning normally. This has occurred twice now while towing. This could lead to a serious accident involving others on the road and not to mention my livestock.
