Defect Description:

POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

Multiple times the idle-stop feature has caused my car to stall out at an intersection. The idle-stop will engage, but when I take my foot off the break (or move the steering wheel), the car does not start again, instead it will try to start but then turns off completely. At that point I have to re-engage the break, put the car in park, turn off the car and then try to turn it back on as normal. When this happens at a green light it's very stressful and dangerous as cars are behind me. This has happened probably 10 times in my ownership period, it is always worse when it's hot outside since so many parts are running (including the AC). I have brought the car in to fix this a bunch of times, they never find anything wrong at the dealer. The last time they replaced the starter button at no charge saying that this piece was known to be faulty. It has happened once or twice since replacing that part.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

Ocassionally when stopped at intersections my 2016 Honda Pilot touring edition will go into idle stop mode and not restart. Upon trying to proceed the engine will try to start and stall out. The engine goes dead and I am unable to accelerate out of the intersection. The info dash system indicates the vehicle was in Neutral and that I needed to shift to Park to Proceed. After putting the vehicle in Park the info dash system instructs me to start the engine by pressing the Brake and pushing the Start button. This action is not possible when the vehicle has stalled out as described above and continues to prevent the driver from accelerating out of the intersection. The only solution I found that works is to remove my foot from the brake and power down the vehicle completely. Only when the vehicle is completely powered down is it possible to restart the vehicle by pressing the Brake and Pushing the power button. This event has happened 4 times in the past 3 months on my Pilot. The mileage on my Pilot is ~125,000 miles.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

At low idle, car will lock up, unable to drive, cannot put in neutral, will not go. I can't even shut the car off to restart. The dash tells be to push brake and start button, but that still does not work. I continue to push buttons until it finally kicks in. I was in the middle of the road. 1 car almost rear ended me. This also happened while I was traveling and stopped at the end of highway. I needed assistance, but since I couldn't put car in neutral, we could not push. I put hazards on and again, pushed random buttons until kicked back in. This is very dangerous! I will not let my kids take my car for fear that they will get stuck as well. I'm scared to drive it. Honda's response was bad gas or alternator, which it is NOT.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

While at a stop the engine stopped as it should but did not restart. It then took multiple tries of pressing the brake and hitting the start button to get it to restart. This meant the car was blocking the flow of traffic creating a safety issue. This has occurred on multiple occasions with no issues found at the dealer.

Potential Consequences:

Purchased the car back in 2/2016. Had the battery replaced this year after noticing the auto stop-start function showed some signs of hesitation. In the past month, I've had the vehicle stall twice. The first time, I was at a parking lot, waiting for the other car to move out. While the car was stopped - the auto stop/start feature activated. Upon letting go of the brake, the car failed to restart. I had to place it in Park. Hit the ignition button. It restarted after 2-3 tries. The second time happened today while at a stop light. The car was off when the auto stop/start activated. When light turned green, brake was released and car failed to start. Had to go through the same routine as above. The car finally start.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

The Auto Engine Idle Stop malfunctions. This has happened multiple times. When this feature is NOT de-activated, the engine will turn off (at say a traffic light) and will not restart properly. While this has happened multiple times, today I took note of the specifics. When I realized the engine was turning off, I attempted to disable the auto engine idle stop. The car switched itself to neutral, the battery light came on and I had to push the button to start it again. During this time the A/C also turned off. On previous occasions, instructions have appeared on the digital screen (i.e. press brake, press start twice, etc,), but I do not recall the specifics as this causes anxiety and panic when it happens. I've had to turn on my hazard lights in the past while I attempt to restart the vehicle, while traffic is building behind my disabled vehicle. This issue does not always happen, but when it does, it's terrifying. It's dangerous as someone would expect you to be driving, but cannot because your vehicle has randomly shut off (say in traffic). I told the dealer about it a while ago, but they could not recreate the issue.

Auto Engine Idle Stop has failed to restart the vehicle in multiple situations, including at traffic lights and in stop and go traffic. Inspection is available upon request. When a trafic light turns green and I have tried to proceed the vehicle stalls and will not restart quickly, the cars behind me are surprised and not happy when I have to go through a procedure to get the car to restart. I have almost been hit by cars behind me several times as they expected me to go when the light turns green. Sometimes my vehicle will not restart for a minute or more. This could be a major issue if you were in traffic and ended up stuck in a place where you should not stop or stall. One time I had to call AAA to get my vehicle to start. They had to disconnect my battery and reattach so the system would reset itself. Only then would the vehicle start. The dealer said they have heard from other owners of Honda Pilots that they want this auto engine idle stop permanently turned off. But they told me they can’t turn it off. This should auto engine idle stop should be something you opt into not have to opt out every time you start your vehicle. There weren’t any lights or warnings that this system would fail ahead of time.

A roof moulding flew off my vehicle on the expressway. Apparently there is a Honda Service Bulletin that came out to the dealership that indicates these mouldings need to be secured better. However, they listed only some of the VINs and mine wasn't one of them, but the moulding ended up flying off anyway. It sounds like is a problem for other VINs that Honda didn't indicate.

Potential Consequences:

At lights when the vehicle stops for a short period, the engine goes off and is supposed to restart. Many times the engine is kicking off, this is not normal, it has almost caused us to get rear-ended a couple of times because the car goes off completely. You have to put the car in park and turn it off and on again to restart. As you can imagine this also frustrates drivers behind us. Please look into this, it is a HUGE safety issue. I don't see it as a recall as of yet, but read people have been reporting the same issue.

Potential Consequences:

While driving on the highway on cruise mode, the car was driving fine. Then suddenly, cruise mode turns off, and the following four lights appeared on the dash: emissions system problem, vehicle stability assist problem, hill stability assist problem, and steering problem. When the car attempted to accelerate, it would not go above 50 mph on a 70mph highway. When it did go above 50mph, the car would bounce as if it was on a bumpy road even though the road was smooth. Additionally, when the problem would appear again, the car would suddenly slow down, increasing risk for an accident with the other cars driving so fast. We have bought many cars in the past but this was the first time we have ever experienced a problem like this with a Honda vehicle. I came on here to send this message to make other drivers aware that this is a common problem that 2016 Honda pilots have been experiencing, according to some mechanics.
