NHTSA Campaign: 24V838000 SAFETY RECALL
206.5K Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Nov 7, 2024
Safety Issue:

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles. A malfunction in the antilock-brake system (ABS) module may incorrectly illuminate the brake lights and disable the ABS and electronic stability control (ESC). In addition, the vehicle operator may be able to start and shift out of Park without the brake pedal being applied.

Potential Risk:
A vehicle that can be started and shifted out of Park without applying the brake pedal can result in a vehicle rollaway. Disabled ABS and ESC systems can reduce vehicle handling and control in certain driving situations. Brake lights that incorrectly illuminate can fail to properly indicate the driver's intention to following traffic. Any of these scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Dealers will replace the integrated pressure transducer and update the ABS module software, as necessary free of charge. Interim owner letters were mailed December 5, 2024. A second notice will be mailed once the final remedy is available, anticipated September 2025. Owners may contact FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is 94B. This recall replaces previous recall number 22V-426. Vehicles previously remedied under 22V-426 will need to have the new remedy completed.

Potential Consequences:

U-Connect 8.4 screen has delaminted causing functions such as navigation, radio, back up, telephone to constantly change while driving. The screen keeps changing while driving which is a risk during driving since we need such apps as navigation to drive. This causes us to constantly take our eyes off the road and fix the screen. This happen as often as 40 times per minute. Extremely dangerous and distracting. My Jeep is a 2018 an the delamination started at about 35,000 with no issues other than delamination. At about 42,000 mile the delamination is more severe and very dangerous and distracting to the driver. Now my vehicle has 42,800 miles and I cannot drive it fearing an accident. I called the dealer they said it is out of warranty. This is a common problem I have researched with Jeep U connect 8.4 screens for 2017 & 2018 model years I have a video of this happening and it's scary. I am no longer driving my car until I can have it fixed

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

The screen on the car’s infotainment system is delaminating and I cannot use the touch screen in the delaminated areas. This is preventing hands-free capabilities while driving since touch is the only way to navigate the system and posing a safety hazard. It is preventing access to the federally mandated backup camera and vehicle controls. The touch screen will sometimes “ghost touch” options without the user touching the screen, causing the system to randomly turn on the radio, make calls, activate climate control, and more. It is progressively getting worse and is present in many other 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokees. It is a manufacturing defect causing distractions while driving and should be recalled.

It is progressively getting worse and is present in many other 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokees. It is a manufacturing defect causing distractions while driving and should be recalled.

Additional Notes:

Defect Description:

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

Potential Consequences:

The touch screen on the center console of the vehicle is delaminating. The digitizer is peeling off of the screen at the top edge. This causes phantom touches on the display, causing pop-ups to appear at random, sometimes back to back in a short time. Most notably, the clock at the top-center of the display is experiencing phantom touches which causes a pop-up asking if I would like to configure the clock. This pop-up obscures most of the screen and does not go away unless dismissed by the driver or a passenger. This issue is distracting for the driver, and blocks access to digital buttons used to control function of the car, as well as other systems like the onboard navigation. The component has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? The delamination began in the top two corners of the screen. In the span of about two weeks the entire top edge of the digitizer has peeled away from the screen and it continues to peel off downwards. This issue first manifested while the car was parked outside on a hot day, and I believe the summer heat has exacerbated the issue.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

My pre-owned 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 Trailhawk is unsafe and unreliable because the vehicle ** would not start ** on three occasions within 18 months of ownership. Also, the "auto start" feature on the key fob works intermittently. Thankfully, I was in safe locations when the problems occurred, but two of those locations were in public, away from home. Also, the dashboard has indicator lights that come on randomly such as engine or start/stop or "check air suspension" or check ABS. The dealer has not been able to find or diagnose the problem, yet I keep paying out of pocket fees. My problems would occur with no warning, so there would be no time to get help. I contacted Chrysler on 8/8/22 and they were no help; they just directed me back to a dealer to pay another out-of-pocket diagnostic fee. They expressed no concern for my safety, did not acknowledge my frustration, and said a supervisor was not available to speak to me. All recall work was completed prior to my owning the vehicle. I do not trust my own vehicle and I need to travel frequently through desolate and arduous terrain. I am likely going to get rid of the vehicle because (1) I don't trust Chrysler or government systems to help me in the timeframe that I need help, (2) I need to do my job and have a peace of mind, and (3) I need to know that I and my family will be safe.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

Radio screen is becoming delaminated. The radio screen will now just randomly select anything on the screen without me touching it. It has tried calling 911, it will turn my heated seats on during the summer, it will go on the navigation screen and keep selecting a new location to the point that it zooms out so far that s globe is shown on the screen and the globe just spins as the screen keeps selecting random locations all over the world. All while I’m driving. It is extremely distracting. I am unable to turn my screen off so I don’t have to see this occur out of the corner of my eye while I drive to work, but it just automatically turns my screen back on. My vehicle is only 4 years old and under 45,000, but my radio is completely junked and is becoming a huge distraction as I’m driving. The dealership I purchased my jeep from told me this is not the first instance they have heard of this, but the other vehicles had still been under their warranty period so they did not have to file a complaint.
