Recall Date: Sep 27, 2024
Safety Issue:

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2020-2024 Jeep Wrangler 4XE and 2022-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4XE vehicles. The high voltage battery may fail internally and lead to a vehicle fire while parked or driving.

Potential Risk:
A vehicle fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
FREE Recall Solution:
Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures, and not to recharge their vehicles until they are repaired. Dealers will update the high voltage battery pack software and replace the battery pack assembly, if necessary, free of charge. Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed October 11, 2024. Owner notification letters were mailed beginning December 2024. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is 95B. Vehicles in this recall that were previously recalled for the same issue under NHTSA Recall 23V-787 will need to have the new remedy performed.

VISIBILITY/WIPER

Potential Consequences:

I received a safety recall letter in the mail. I made an appointment at the South Shore Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Service center in Inwood, NY for the repair of the recall and to change the oil. I specifically made the appointment for the recall (I keep getting notifications to repair) I went to the service center (1 hour drive from my home) on May 18,2024 (when I called to check in for the appointment “Shanty” told me that there’s no appointment scheduled for me, even though I got a text message confirming the appointment) Nevertheless, I went anyways. When I provided the recall letter to the representative, he told me that the service team can only do an oil change and can’t repair the defrost that day. So, after waiting for the oil change, I asked when I can come back for the recall repair, the representative told me that they need to get the parts first. I also notified the rep. that my parking rear view camera doesn’t turn on sometimes when in R and sometimes the screen goes black while I’m in the middle of parking. They ended up letting me go and drive with the recall STILL active. On June 19, 2024, I read on Fox Business that Stellantis is recalling Jeeps due to rear view camera defects. I called the dealer who sold me the car (apparently he no longer works at Jeep) I spoke to a different representative, she gave me the phone number to MOPAR and STELLANTIS - nothing else. Throughout the entire time of driving this car, I’ve been experiencing total discomfort. The car constantly jerks, seems like it doesn’t have enough power or traction (even though the gas tank is full and charged too) , and the windshield defrost takes a long time to work, even just the other day on June 29,2024 I started to drive and the windshield got so foggy that I had to stop. This car is dangerous and I do not feel safe driving it.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

My partner and I were driving from Oakland, CA to Petaluma, CA on [XXX], 2024. While driving approximately 75 mph the car shut down and i had to guide it to the side of the highway. It was frightening and we were almost was hit by passing traffic. The display screen and electrical system were going haywire - turtle sign to check engine to random messages stating the car was OK to start. After about 25 minutes, the car started on its own. At the time of the incident, there was just under a half tank of gas. In the weeks since, the car has randomly shutoff and turned itself back on. A nearby Jeep dealer in San Leandro, CA indicated he has heard of similar issue with other Jeep Grand Cherokees. Having read about this I do not trust Jeep as their response was "oh this happens with the 4xe." We purchased this vehicle in August of 2023 and have approximately 6400 miles on it. Fully maintained and no warning lights. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

While driving home yesterday, the High Engine Temp alarm came on. This was just north of Virginia City, NV. I pulled the vehicle over and immediately smelled hot coolant when I exited the vehicle. I lifted the hood, and there was no coolant in the reservoir. I left the hood open and latched with the safety catch while I returned to Virginia City to the local market. The trip was mostly down hill so little excess strain was put on the engine. I bought some coolant and tried to refill the system. While I was doing this with the engine running, my son looked underneath and saw coolant streaming to the ground underneath the vehicle. We called AAA for a tow to get the Jeep to the dealership where I bought it yesterday eveing. I called and spoke to the Service Tech explaining my Jeep was at the dealership and why. I subsequently received a phone call from the Tech. He explained the water pump had "exploded." He informed me they did not have the part but could get one tomorrow morning and have my Jeep ready for tomorrow afternoon. He also stated he nor the mechanic had ever seen anything like this. This is the second incident report I have made on this vehicle for parts failing that no one had ever seen fail before. The first was for a rear brake caliper taht broke at the mount. I bought this vehicle last September new. I am concerned this is only the beginning of significant issues this make and model will experience.

The Stalantis manufacturer of 2023 JEEP vehicles has modified its steering/transmission controls to cause a safety concern. On the steering wheel are two “Auto Stick” (aka “paddles”) which when touched switch the transmission from automatic to manual. The “auto stick” controls are marked (-) minus on the left side of the steering wheel and (+) on the right side. Beneath them are the controls for the radio (or other media). These are “buttons” on the left that control the channels (up & down) for the radio. On the right side they control the volume. The safety concern is that the “auto stick” can be easily hit at the same time when attempting to use the radio controls and it will immediately shift the transmission from automatic to manual. The auto-stick control can also be inadvertently hit when using the steering wheel in a normal manner. This is dangerous. The vehicle can go into a lower gear and the engine can hit the “red” line as it becomes stuck in only one gear. The vehicle becomes difficult to control unless the driver can immediately sense the manual transmission and then hit the proper paddle a number of times to gain control. I have had to pull over to the side of the road a number of times and turn off the vehicle and wait 60 seconds for it to reset to the automatic transmission upon restart. Prior to the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland design, the “auto stick” controls could be disabled by the driver using the electronic screen and setting it to “disable” the paddles so they did not work (or conversely made to use at the drivers discretion). Now there is NO WAY to disable the auto stick controls and even a slight swipe at them changes the transmission from automatic to manual. I consider this a dangerous safety concern which can easily allow a driver to lose control without realizing it. Please contact the manufacturer Stanlantis to immediately make a modification to the transmission controls.

VISIBILITY/WIPER

Potential Consequences:

Dear Administration, I am writing to bring to your immediate attention a potentially life-threatening issue regarding the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4XE Overlander, which I purchased from Route 18 Jeep Chrysler dealership in New Jersey in June of 2023. The car in question has a critical flaw that poses a significant danger to both the driver and pedestrians. Specifically, there is a glaring reflection cast onto the Windshield directly In front of the driver, blocking visibility of the road. This appears to be coming from the head-up display device located on the mirror, which obstructs the driver's view of the road. The glare I'm referring to. Will change several times during a day? Depending on the direction, you're going time of day or night and the external environment. It's impossible to drive the car through a tunnel lights on both sides of the roadway, it becomes very difficult to drive the car in the evening in the city environment, with light illuminating overhead on a street way. It's easier during midday but very difficult in early evening, we're early morning. This obstruction makes it nearly impossible to operate the vehicle safely and creates hazardous conditions for everyone on the road. Despite bringing this issue to the attention of multiple Jeep service stations, as well as Jeep Wave, the manufacturer's department, I have received no acknowledgment of the danger from them. They have simply stated that this is how the automobile was manufactured, particularly for the specific model, Highlander. As a result of this safety concern, I have chosen not to drive the vehicle for the past 10 months, as I refuse to put my family and others at risk. I urge you to take immediate action to address this issue before it results in tragic consequences on the highways. If this specific model of Jeep was indeed manufactured with this flaw, it has the potential to cause accidents and even fatalities.

STEERING

Potential Consequences:

The vehicle was leased in December 2023. At time of delivery the vehicle was making a clicking and clunking sound when turning. It took over a month to get an appointment to get the vehicle looked at. With 2,800 miles the vehicle was diagnosed with a right axle shaft. It took over two weeks for the parts to be delivered and replaced. The vehicle was picked up after 16 days and the issue persisted. Again, it took nearly a month for an appointment. The vehicle was with the dealer for 6 days and was not able to find diagnose an issue. The vehicle was picked up and the next day was returned to the dealer for the same issue. This time it was confirmed there is an undiagnosed steering/suspension problem. Also during this visit the check engine light illuminated. The fault was a hybrid battery cooling system failure. The dealer is unable to complete any work on the vehicle and a new service appointment was scheduled in 4 days. This will be the third attempt to fix this steering/suspension issue. Jeep corporate was notified with the first service visit and again with the second visit. They have since stopped communicating with me to come to a resolution for these safety issues. There is an open recall for steering bolts, I was notified that Jeep is rationing these parts and only allowing 1 vehicle per week per dealer to be repaired. I was told it could be months before this recall is able to be completed.
