POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

Car has 22,000 miles. And has intermittent transmissions issues. After a stop, I accelerated thru and intersection then when I pulled my foot off the gas to slow down the car engine revved up so loud, really loud. But there was no movement. Also coming off of a stop the car doesn’t go sometimes. I have to push the gas more. If I’m on the freeway at high speeds and I release the gas because I know the traffic is slowing up ahead. The car will shift down loudly and sometimes jerk.

Defect Description:

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

I purchased my 19' Odyssey in March, almost two months ago. It was used with only 19k miles. During the test drive I mentioned to the sales guy (sitting in passenger seat) a strange noise that sounded like fluttering, but only when accelerating 1k-1500k RPM. I didn't think much of it so I made the purchase. Come May 2nd I got the Oil changed (at the same dealership). I couldn't help but notice the same sound mentioned earlier, but even louder. Since then I've recorded numerous videos of the sound, also worth mentioning the speaker crackling. On Monday of this week I took the car in, showed the mechanic the video of the engine noise and speaker crackle. He mentioned he's only worked on one other odyssey with the same engine sound, resulted being the short block. After they were done, I was told by the service writer that they couldn't replicate the engine noise but did change fiber optic connectors for my speaker crackling (crackle still occurs but only on HD signal). I went over to the Service Manager and showed him the videos, we went for a drive around and heard the noise. He said to drop off the car Friday (today) and he'll have a loaner ready for me. I dropped off the van, spoke with the senior mechanic and the manager, they saw the videos and said they are going to take care of it. They wanted to test drive the car, however the sound is much louder when my car is either cold, or before reaching it's regular temps. I will attach two links to this letter that better show the problem at hand. One being my YouTube channel and the other of the forums where many others just like myself share the same problem. https://youtube.com/channel/UCuOrw9CP7Njl2O_EAF4fsFA https://www.odyclub.com/threads/rattle-noise-on-acceleration-revisited.347853/page-36

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

Six months or more ago, my van started acting as though it is stuck in a gear before it finally shifts to the next gear. At first is happened every once in a while, but it now happens several times every trip and always at speeds between 25-40mph. Additionally, when I press down on the gas pedal, there sometimes tends to be a delay in it responding, so I've been very careful about pulling out in traffic. But recently, it seems to be happening while the van is already in motion. And, just yesterday, when accelerating from a stop, the car lurched forward and the wheels screeched. Regarding electrical issues, just this past December, we were driving home from vacation, and as we were passing through downtown Nashville, the car suddenly lost all electrical power. As the car began to slow, my husband pumped the gas as we were on an interstate junction and had no other alternative. Thankfully, after a 10-15 seconds, everything turned back on and we continued to our way. I've owned the van since Oct 2020 and it only has 57K miles on it. We've had several Hondas over the past 25 years (this is our 3rd Odyssey), and have loved them all. But, I'm very concerned about safety as well as the money spent.

On April 14, 2022 I parked our Odyssey in the parking lot of our child care center. I went in the building and when I came out of the building (approximately 5-7 minutes later) flames were coming out of the hood near the windshield. Within a few more minutes the flames had engulfed the front half or two-thirds of the car. Prior to this incident we had no warning lamps, and zero indication of anything wrong with the vehicle. The vehicle had approximately 35,000 miles and had always run perfectly. The incident has been reported to insurance. A fire inspector came to the scene and said the damage was so bad we would likely not know the cause of the fire.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

Potential Consequences:

My vehicle has a problem with delayed acceleration and excessive acceleration. When releasing my foot from the brake pedal then pressing on the gas pedal, the vehicle doesn't always accelerate when the gas pedal is pressed. There seems to be a few second delay and then all of a sudden there is too much acceleration. We've reported this to our dealership several times. Several of their employees told us that this is just the nature of the 9 speed transmission. We've also reported it to Honda's corporate service and they didn't acknowledge any problems. They were plenty nice but lacked what I felt was the drive to help. Their time between my report and their follow up was terribly long. There are multiple reports of the same exact thing online so I know it's not exclusive to us. This is an absolute safety issue as the delayed acceleration can cause us to get hit from behind and also mess up our timing as we move along w/ traffic. The excessive acceleration is a safety issue in that it may cause us to hit a vehicle or something in front of us as the vehicle jolts. Overall, the vehicle is fantastic other than this issue. I've told the dealer and Honda as such. This has gone on since owning the vehicle and even this morning, 4/5/2022, with approximately 53k miles on the vehicle. Fortunately, we haven't had any accidents and I hope there is never an accident with us or any other 2019 Honda Odyssey owners....thus my reason for sending this message. Thank you for your consideration.

I was driving my 2019 Honda Odyssey on the highway and it stopped suddenly in the middle of the highway. The car went to idle mode and changed itself to park gear. We had to off the car and restart it which was dangerous in the middle of the highway. This same incident happened earlier too but in a residential street. We took it to the dealership but they said they couldn’t find anything wrong. Then I heard the news story about nhtsa investigation into this problem with Honda and wanted to report my experience. This is dangerous and they need to figure out what is going on.

SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

When braking hard it or on hills shakes the whole vehicle bad. Has been doing this since about 10,000 miles. Was taken back to dealer for this at 12,000 miles . I have new brakes and rotors changed 3 times since. Still not right. I think it’s ABS problem or electronic brake issue

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

Driving 60mph on the highway, everything electrical shut off and on several times. The dash screen, the touch screen, the AC, the lights. I immediately took an exit and got off, and when the rebooting stopped I was going about 30mph and the car shifted by itself into park. Then there was a horrible grinding sound of metal on metal...I hit the brakes to pull off the road the car got under 20mph and stopped instantaneously. I had the car towed to my local Honda dealership and they said they cannot replicate the issue, nor see any error codes. They will not take apart anything to check for damage to the parking rod because there were no error codes...And they want me to pick up the vehicle today.
