STEERING
Potential Consequences:
INTERMITTENT STEERING BINDING CONDITION AT SLOW TURNS MAINLY DURING HOT WEATHER. THIS BINDING ISSUE WAS DIFFICULT TO RECREATE AND EVENTUALLY THE DEALER WAS ABLE TO CREATE THIS AFTER A LENGTHY (30 MINUTE) ROAD TEST IN 80+ DEGREE WEATHER. THE BINDING ISSUE WAS A RESULT OF AN INTERNAL STEERING GEAR FAILURE. THE PART # HB5Z-3504-Z WAS FINALLY REPLACED THIS YEAR AFTER WE HAD THE VEHICLE IN TO THE DEALER MULTIPLE TIMES SINCE LATE 2017 WHEN THE VEHICLE HAD APPROXIMATELY 25,000 MILES ON IT. VEHICLE NOW HAS 67,000 MILES. THE BINDING ISSUE OCCURRED AT SPEEDS RANGING MAINLY BETWEEN 40 MPH TO 75 MPH WITH AND WITHOUT DRIVING ASSISTANCE FEATURES ENABLED. BINDING ISSUE OCCURRED BOTH TO THE LEFT AND RIGHT DIRECTIONS ON GRADUAL TURNS OR WHEN CHANGING LANES ON THE HIGHWAY AT HIGHER SPEEDS. THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD STICK IN THE TURNED POSITION AND NOT RETURN TO THE CENTER ON ITS OWN UNLESS TUGGED OUT OF WHAT FELT LIKE A DETENT (NOTCH). THIS TOOK A LONG TIME TO GET IT FIXED BECAUSE THE DEALERSHIP WOULD NOT WORK ON THE CAR SINCE THEY COULD NOT RE-CREATE THE PROBLEM ON SHORT TEST DRIVES. THE INTERMITTENT NATURE OF THE STEERING ISSUE AND NEED FOR LONGER DRIVES AND HOT WEATHER CONDITIONS MADE IT DIFFICULT TO RECREATE.

IN ORDER TO LOCK AND UNLOCK THE DOORS YOU MUST DO SO MANUALLY BY PUSHING THE LOCK DOWN OR PULLING THE LOCK UP. YOU CANNOT USE THE KEY FOB OR THE LOCK/UNLOCK BUTTON ON THE DOOR. YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO OPEN THE DOOR BY USING THE HANDLE ON THE INTERIOR SIDE OF THE DOOR EITHER. I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH ALL OF THE LOCKS. LET ME ADD THE MY CAR HAS BEEN BROKEN INTO WHILE ALL OF MY DOORS WILL NOT LOCK AS WELL.

THE VEHICLE WAS LOOKED OVER AT MY LOCAL DEALER WHO SAID THEY COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM AND SINPLY REPLOACED THE CABIN AIR FILTER WHICH WAS BLACK WHEN IT WAS REMOVED. THE ISSUE PERSISTS AND IS GETTING WORSE EVERY WEEK. THE ISSUE WAS NOT RESOLVED AND THE DEALER ACTED LIKE THEY HAS NEVER HEARD OF THE ISSUE AND DIDNT SEEM TO CARE ABOUT THE COMPLAINT. I WILL BE TAKING THE VEHICLE BACK WEEKLY UNTIL SOMETHING IS DONE AND I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER FORD VEHICLE NEW OR USED. THE VEHICLE IN QUESTION IS A 2017 FORD EXPLORER WITH HANKOOK VENTUS S1NOBLE2 FRONT TIRES THAT ARE SHREDDING BOTH ON THE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR PARAMETER OF THE TIRES. THE DELAMINATION IS MIGRATING TOWARDS THE CENTER OF THE TIRE AS WELL WITH FLAPS AND CHUNKS OF RUBBER SOME OVER 10MM ARE SEPARATING FROM THE SUBSTRATE. THE TIRES ONLY HAVE 27,000 MILES ON THEM AND LOOK LIKE THEY HAVE 50,000+. I HAVE NEVER SEEN A VULCANIZATION PROBLEM LIKE THIS IN MY CAREER. THERE IS CLEARLY SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS RUBBER COMPOUND REMINISCENT OF THE FORD FIRESTONE DEBACLE. THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE AND THE DEALER SEAMS TO BE INEFFECTIVE IN GETTING A CORRECTIVE ACTION IN PLACE. THE DEALER IS SKALNEK FORD IN LAKE ORION, MI AND WAS NOTIFIED ON SATURDAY AUGUST 17TH WHEN I WAS INFORMED THAT I WOULD NEED TO BRING MY CAR BACK ON MONDAY AUGUST 19TH AT WHICH TIME THEY WOULD FIX THE VEHICLE. I HAVE SINCE RETURNED FROM THE DEALER WITH THE REPAIR NOT COMPLETED AS THE DEALER IS WAITING FOR HANKOOK TO RESPOND BACK TO THEM WITH THE REPAIR AUTHORIZATION. AS OF THIS COMPLAINT THE DEALER SAID FORD WOULD NOT COVER THE ISSUE AS IT IS OUT OF THE 12/12 WARRANTY PERIOD FOR THE TIRES, AND THEY ARE NOT SURE IF OR WHEN HANKOOK WOULD RESPOND. ON A SEPARATE NOTE WHEN I WAS IN THE SERVICE AREA OF THE DEALER ANOTHER CUSTOMER WHICH ALSO HAPPENED TO BE AN ENGINEER SAID HE HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM WITH HIS VEHICLE AND REPLACED AT HIS EXPENSE ALL 4 TIRES WITH ANOTHER BRAND. IN SHORT THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT AND COULD IN FACT PUT CONSUMERS AT RISK. MY WIFE ONLY DISCOVERED THE ISSUE BECAUSE SHE TOOK THE CAR IN FOR A POTENTIAL TRADE-IN AND THE DEALER ALERTED HER TO THE ISSUE OF THURSDAY THE 15TH OF AUGUST.

FOR 2 YEARS PASSENGERS WERE GETTING PHYSICALLY ILL WHEN RIDING IN VEHICLE. KNOWN ISSUE WITH CARBON MONOXIDE LEAK WAS BROUGHT TO FORD'S ATTENTION IN 2018. CAR WAS REPAIRED WITH FORD'S PRESCRIBED FIX OPTIONS. CONTINUED ILLNESS PROMPTED LOCAL FORD DEALER TO RUN THEIR OWN HVAC TEST FOR CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING IN THE CABIN. MULTIPLE LEAKS WERE NOTED BY THE FORD DEALER AND ENTIRE EXHAUST SYSTEM WAS REPLACED. THE FORD DEALER THEN BROUGHT IN AND INDEPENDENT HVAC COMPANY TO TEST FOR CARBON MONOXIDE LEAKS AFTER REPAIRS. THE REPORT INDICATED 12 PPM IN THE CABIN OF CARBON MONOXIDE. ANOTHER TEST WAS DONE ON ANOTHER 2015 FORD EXPLORER AS A BASELINE, AND READING REPORTED 0 PPM. FORD DEALER CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER TO DISCUSS OPTIONS FOR THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THE INCIDENCE OF CARBON MONOXIDE WAS STILL OCCURRING. WE REQUESTED FORD PURCHASE BACK THE VEHICLE AS IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AFTER HAVING MULTIPLE MEDICAL TESTS DONE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. FORD HAS OUR FILED COMPLAINT BUT AS OF NOW THERE IS NO RESOLUTION.
