112.9K Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Mar 28, 2025
Safety Issue:

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2018-2020 Expedition and Lincoln Navigator vehicles. The seat belt pretensioner in the driver and/or front passenger seat may inadvertently lock the seat belt, which will not allow the belt to retract or extend.

Potential Risk:
Seat belts that do not retract or extend can fail to restrain an occupant as intended, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Dealers will inspect the seat belt retractor date codes and replace the seat belt retractors as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed May 23, 2025. A second notice will be sent once the final remedy is available. The parts are anticipated to be available the third quarter of 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 25S31. ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

This vehicle with 72,000 miles on it was experiencing a rattle upon start on cold mornings for about two months, it didn't happen every time and only on initial start. Mechanic couldn't get the incident to happen in his presence to diagnose and no codes reported from computer diagnostic equipment. In February 2023, the vehicle lost power while highway driving and seemed to having problems shifting. The check engine and powertrain malfunction indicator both came on. Drove the vehicle immediately to mechanic. Booster sensor replacement was indicated by computer diagnostic and was replaced. On 4/16/2023 the check engine light came on briefly while driving and then went out and did not come back on. On 4/18/2023 while driving on the highway the vehicle started making a loud clanking with black smoke from exhaust pipe. We had the vehicle towed to mechanic. Over 30 diagnostic codes reported and mechanic recommended we take the vehicle to a Ford dealership. We had the vehicle towed to the local Ford dealership and have been informed that this 4 year old, 72,000 mile vehicle needs a complete engine replacement for $18,222. They do not know what caused the problem without pulling the whole engine and opening it up, but recommend a full replacement. We have contacted Ford and opened a case with them, but since the vehicle had a 60,000 mile power train warranty there is nothing that Ford is willing to do.

POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

The transmission shifting is dangerous. It’s shifting hard, missing gears and when trying to accelerate the engine just rev’s and then slams into gear. It also skips. It’s not even safe to pull out into traffic. I have had it in at a Ford dealership 3 times and it has only gotten worse! I don’t know what else to do as the dealership acts like they have not seen this before and aren’t sure how to fix it.

POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

Momentary Neutral-Out Condition In Drive The vehicle has exhibited issues that correspond to other Ford vehicles that share the 10-speed transmission. This includes slipping, jerking, and loss of power to put it simply. A main issue that I wanted to point out is that it has a Momentary Neutral-Out Condition In Drive which means that the vehicle shifts into neutral when driving, thus resulting in a loss of power, suddenly. Consequently, this posses a major safety risk in all roads. There has been no accident that resulted from this. However, this requires a replacement of transmission which is a recall for the F150 but not the Expedition despite it having the same transmission and issues. This issue began around Christmas of 2022.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Potential Consequences:

When the vehicle has the auto start-stop activated it will randomly kill the engine entirely when you go to drive forward from an auto start-stop stop. You then need to put the vehicle in park and restart the engine. I've taken this into the dealership twice now for this issue, as the first time they tried to fix it with a new battery, which did not fix the issue. It's currently at Ford Service being inspected again. This is unsafe as drivers behind you would be expecting you to move forward when traffic signals allow, and after they see your rear brake lights go off when you try to accelerate.

POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

"SHIFT SYSTEM FAULT" warning comes on dash with a wrench code. This is on my 2019 Ford Expedition Max, with 77000 miles on it. This warning comes when vehicle has been driven and since put in park, then put back into gear. If vehicle is shut off and turned back on code has cleared. Recently also got a "powertrain malfunction" code where then a driver mode became unavailable.

POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

I had a complete transmission replacement 3 weeks ago and as I was driving down a grade, the car started smoking. I immediately took it back to dealership that had just replaced the transmission. They stated that the new transmission was "factory overfilled" that caused the smoking. They called Ford and now I am on my 3rd transmission. It was covered under the warranty of the transmission I paid 3 weeks ago. This was very scary as we were traveling as a family when the car started smoking. Our car could have started on fire.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

Potential Consequences:

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle intermittently came to an abrupt stop without any other objects or vehicles nearby. The emergency braking image followed by a warning chime would appear on the instrument panel during the failure. The contact had taken the vehicle to a dealer where he was informed that the failure could not be duplicated. An investigator was sent to inspect the vehicle and the brake module was replaced. Despite the repair, the failure persisted. The computer and battery were both replaced after the initial repair but failed to fix the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was provided a case number. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 22,000.
