Safety Issue:

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Audi) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Q5 Sportback, SQ5 Sportback, 2018-2022 Q5, and SQ5 vehicles. A liquid spill in the rear seat, or water ingress from an insufficient body seam underneath the vehicle may allow liquid to penetrate the gateway control module, causing it to shutdown.

Potential Risk:
A gateway control module shutdown will suddenly reduce engine power, increasing the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Dealers will install a protective cover on the gateway control module and seal an underbody seam as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 21, 2022. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Audi's number for this recall is 90S9.

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Audi) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Audi SQ5 and 2018-2020 Audi Q5 vehicles. The rear wheel arch cover trim may loosen and detach from the vehicle.

Potential Risk:
The detached trim may become a road hazard, increasing the risk of crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Audi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the four clips securing the forward part of the rear wheel arch trim, free of charge. The recall began November 1, 2019. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Audi's number for this recall is 66K8.

Safety Issue:

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2019 Audi Q5 and SQ5 vehicles. In the event of a crash deploying the passenger's frontal air bag, the instrument panel carrier may break due to incorrect welding. If the carrier breaks, there may be damage to the passenger frontal air bag.

Potential Risk:
A damaged frontal air bag may not provide adequate protection, increasing the risk of an injury.
FREE Recall Solution:
Audi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the instrument panel and the passenger frontal air bag, free of charge. The recall began August 16, 2019. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 90N1.

Potential Risk:
A short casting can cause a sudden loss of brakes, increasing the risk of crash. The electronic parking brake and its emergency brake function are not affected and will still function.
FREE Recall Solution:
Audi has notified owners, and dealers will inspect the brake master cylinder, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began May 3, 2019. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Audi's number for this recall is 47O9.

STEERING

Potential Consequences:

WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH IN THE RAIN THE POWER STEERING MALFUNCTION ERROR MESSAGE APPEARED ON THE VIRTUAL COCKPIT. I PULLED OVER INTO AN EMPTY PARKING LOT, TURNED THE CAR OFF AND RESTARTED. THE ERROR MESSAGE WAS STILL THERE WHEN I TURNED THE CAR ON. IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, ESPECIALLY WHEN MOVING AT VERY LOW SPEEDS. IT WAS THE SAME FEELING AS DRIVING A CAR WITHOUT POWER STEERING, WHICH IF THE DRIVER IS NOT EXPECTING IT OR PHYSICALLY STRONG ENOUGH TO TURN THE WHEEL, WOULD DEFINITELY PRESENT A SAFETY ISSUE. GIVEN THIS IS A NEW CAR (ONLY 11K MILES) I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED AND CONCERNED THIS COULD HAPPEN. THIS TYPE OF MALFUNCTION/DEFECT SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING ON ANY NEW CAR, WHETHER IT IS A BASE BRAND OR LUXURY BRAND CAR.

WHILE USING ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL (ACC) SET AT 75 MPH IN THE PASSING LANE ON SATURDAY AUGUST 31, 2019, THE AUDI'S TRAFFIC SIGN RECOGNITION SYSTEM RESPONDED TO A 55 MPH SIGN SOMEWHERE OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. IT CHANGED THE ACC SETTING FROM 75 TO 55 MPH AND APPLIED THE BRAKES HARD. I HAD TO TAP THE BRAKE PEDAL TO REGAIN CONTROL AND ACCELERATE TO AVOID A REAR-END COLLISION. THE AUDI MANUAL STATES ON PAGE 95 THAT "TRAFFIC SIGN RECOGNITION DOES NOT ADAPT YOUR VEHICLE'S SPEED TO MATCH THE SPEED LIMIT!" HOWEVER, ON PAGE 101 THE MANUAL DESCRIBES A PREDICTIVE EFFICIENCY ASSIST SYSTEM WHICH WHEN SWITCHED ON WILL BEHAVE AS I HAVE DESCRIBED. THIS SETTING IS FOUND WITHIN THE INFOTAINMENT SYSTEM. IT WAS NOT POINTED OUT TO ME BY THE SELLING DEALER AND HAD BEEN APPARENTLY BEEN SWITCHED ON WHEN I TOOK POSSESSION OF THE NEW VEHICLE. THIS FEATURE IS DANGEROUS AND SHOULD BE SET TO OFF BY DEFAULT. I WILL NEVER TURN IT ON! THERE WERE A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS ON MY DRIVE THAT DAY WHEN OTHER VEHICLES WERE FOLLOWING ME DANGEROUSLY CLOSELY AND THIS SUDDEN DECELERATION WOULD HAVE CAUSED A REAR-END COLLISION AT HIGHWAY SPEED.

THE CAR LOST ALL POWER STEERING ABILITY. IT WAS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND THANKFULLY THE ROAD WAS NOT HEAVILY TRAVELED WHEN THIS HAPPENED.
