Toyota has identified a fuel problem affecting 1.5 million 2017-2020 Toyota and Lexus vehicles. This is the third fuel pump recall from the Japanese automaker this year with a total of 3.3 million vehicles dating as far back as 2013. In June 2019, Toyota observed an increase in complaints related to low pressure fuel pumps in certain Lexus and Toyota vehicles. As part of an investigation, Toyota found that certain vehicles were equipped with fuel pumps manufactured with a lower density or were exposed to production solvent drying for longer periods of time. As a result the impellers are prone to surface cracking and increased deformation. In some cases, the impeller could deform to a point that creates interference with the fuel pump body, causing the pump to become inoperative. If this happens drivers will notice a rough running engine, engine no start condition, loss of power while driving at low speeds and illuminated check engine and master warning indicators.
Dealers will correct the problem by replacing the fuel pump assembly with an improved one. Note: This recall is an expansion of recall 20V-012. Toyota's number for this recall is 20TA02. Lexus' number for this recall is 20LA01. The NHTSA campaign number is 20V-682.
