Certain 2024 Tesla Cybertruck vehicles may have a software defect that could affect low voltage hardware, specifically the rear view camera. These Cybertrucks were built between November 13, 2023 and September 14, 2024, and the problem arises when the rear view camera image is delayed after the driver shifts into reverse.
According to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 111, the rear view camera display is required to appear within two seconds when the driver shifts into reverse. However, if the vehicle’s system has not fully shut down before being powered back up, the rear view camera image may not appear on time, causing a delay of several seconds. This delay means the image could take 6-8 seconds to show, leaving the rear view camera display blank in the crucial moments right after the driver shifts to reverse.
The issue was first uncovered during an internal compliance audit at Tesla in September 2024. After further testing, the company confirmed that the vehicles were not compliant with the safety standards, prompting the decision to issue a recall. As of September 25, 2024, Tesla has linked the issue to 45 warranty claims and four field reports. Fortunately, no accidents, injuries, or fatalities have been reported as a result of the defect.
While drivers can still use mirrors and perform shoulder checks to navigate without the rear view camera, the delay in the camera display could increase the risk of a collision, especially in situations where the rear view is crucial.
Tesla is addressing this issue with a software update, which will be provided over-the-air (OTA) to the affected vehicles. Owners of these Cybertrucks will not need to visit a service center to resolve the issue. Tesla will begin notifying owners of the recall by mail starting on November 25, 2024.
For those who need to reference the recall, Tesla’s internal recall number is SB-24-00-016, and the corresponding campaign number from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is 24V-718. This recall ensures that affected vehicles will be updated to comply with safety standards and provide a timely rear view camera display when needed.
