A small number of 2023-2024 Chevrolet Colorado and 2023 GMC Canyon vehicles may have an issue with the front seat belt buckle attachment bolt on either the left or right side. In these vehicles, the bolt may not have been properly tightened during assembly. If the seat belt is not securely fastened, it may not work correctly during a crash, increasing the risk of injury to the occupant.

GM became aware of the issue in May 2024, when a GM brand quality manager submitted a report to GM’s Speak Up for Safety (SUFS) program. This report was triggered after a customer complained about a loose driver seat belt buckle in their 2023 Chevrolet Colorado. GM immediately launched an investigation into the problem. As part of this investigation, they worked closely with the supplier responsible for assembling the seat belts. Together, they discovered that the assembly process may have incorrectly recorded torque measurements from a different seat assembly bolt. This error means that the bolt securing the seat belt buckle might not have been tightened to the correct specifications.

By reviewing supplier manufacturing records, GM was able to identify specific seat frame assemblies that might have been affected by this issue. So far, GM has received five complaints from the field that could be related to this problem. However, GM has not been made aware of any accidents or injuries linked to this condition.

After carefully considering the situation, GM’s Safety and Field Action Decision Authority decided on September 12, 2024, to issue a safety recall. As part of the recall, GM dealerships will inspect and tighten the bolts on both the left and right front seat belt buckles, if needed, at no cost to the vehicle owners.

GM plans to send out notification letters to affected vehicle owners by November 4, 2024. For those wanting more information, GM has assigned this recall the reference number N242453720. Additionally, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has assigned it campaign number 24V-703.
