Unexpected Loss Of Headlamps In 2025 Volvo EX90

A software error has been identified in certain 2025 Volvo EX90 vehicles that could cause the headlight shutters to close unexpectedly while driving. The issue is related to the Low Power Controller (LPC) in the vehicle, which sends a request for a reference run to the headlamps after a reset, resulting in the shutters closing over the high and low beams. This can lead to a temporary loss of low/high beam function, potentially increasing the risk of accidents.

The problem was first reported to Volvo in November 2024, and an investigation was initiated to reproduce the issue and identify the root cause. The investigation was escalated to the Critical Concern Action Process (CCAP) and was concluded as potentially critical. After completing the technical investigation on February 5th, the decision was made to prepare for a recall due to the increased risk to motor vehicle safety.

The LPC is a critical component in the Volvo EX90's electrical system, responsible for controlling various functions, including the headlamps. In this case, the software error causes the LPC to send a signal to the headlamps to perform a reference run, which is a diagnostic test that checks the headlamp's functionality. However, when this signal is sent while the vehicle is in motion, it can cause the headlight shutters to close, resulting in a temporary loss of visibility for the driver.

Drivers may notice a temporary "DIM" message displayed on their dashboard for 2-3 seconds when the issue occurs. This message is an indication that the headlamps are not functioning properly, and drivers should exercise caution when driving in low-light conditions. Although the issue is temporary, it can still pose a significant risk to safety, particularly if it occurs at night or in areas with poor visibility.

To correct the problem, Volvo will update the LPC software through an over-the-air (OTA) update or at a dealership. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on April 3, 2025, and the recall is identified as R10298 by Volvo and 25V-071 by the NHTSA. The update will modify the LPC software to prevent the headlight shutters from closing unexpectedly while driving.

In addition to this software error, the 2025 Volvo EX90 has been affected by other problems, which could be a cause for concern for owners. Repeated issues with a vehicle can be a sign of a larger problem, and in some cases, may indicate that the vehicle is a lemon. If you're experiencing persistent problems with your 2025 Volvo EX90, including this headlight shutter issue, it's essential to keep a record of all repairs and communications with the manufacturer or dealership. You may want to consult with a lemon law attorney to determine if you're eligible for compensation or replacement under state or federal lemon laws.
