EXTERIOR LIGHTING

Potential Consequences:

My vehicle is an XC60. The headlights fogged up and the fog caused issues with driving in the dark. It took four days for the fog to resolve itself. During that time, at night, you could see the fogged areas in the beam. I took the car to a Volvo dealership and they were not able to replicate the issue, likely because it is not as hot now as it was when this occurred. They told me to open a case with Volvo USA. I sent them photographs. They then responded that there was no evidence of condensation, but condensation was normal and would clear up as it did in this case. The sentence is clear that there was condensation while saying there was no condensation. The headlights are a safety issue and the car is under warranty for 10 years. The headlights should be replaced. I shouldn’t be in a position to fight a company that prides itself on safety about headlights, which are critical for safe driving at night. This is a common issue. I searched and found multiple people with the same problem and some were repaired while others weren’t. Volvo is playing a game of chance with a critical component of a vehicle. I even emailed the VP of Customer Care and he did not respond. I don’t know what else to do besides alert the NHTSA that Volvo headlights are in some instances failing their drivers and Volvo refuses to fix the problem.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

Case number 240821-000271 was opened on 8/21/24 with Volvo Car USA Support. I have three main concerns: 1) The infotainment system losing the favorites that I have saved in the Sirius application. This had been an intermittent problem that I had been having since I purchased the car. I finally took it into the service department at Volvo Cars of Gilbert on 1/7/23 for this problem (Invoice Number VOCS110975). The service department was unable to recreate the problem so they did nothing. 2)A complete car system reboot while I was driving on 6/10/24. As I was driving down the road the HVAC system shut off and the dash and infotainment system screens went blank. All car systems completely shut down except the engine. This was an extremely frightening experience as all of this happened with no warning whatsoever WHILE I WAS DRIVING. This is a huge safety issue! Within about a minute of driving like this the systems started to come back up. I proceeded home. The next morning I took the car to Volvo Cars of Gilbert again. They had the car for 5 days and performed a software update on the IHU (Infotainment Head Unit) (Invoice Number VOCS120164). 3)The failure of the infotainment system to update after starting the car and driving. This happened on 8/7/24 and I took the car directly to Volvo Cars of Gilbert again. The infotainment system was stuck on “Infotainment system starting…” for the entire 12-minute drive to Volvo. Volvo Cars of Gilbert had my car for 8 days this time and this time they did a reload to the existing IHU (Invoice Number VOCS121204). I asked that they replace the IHU. Volvo refused to replace the IHU because it was too expensive at $3200. Also, the problem of the infotainment system losing its radio favorites has become much worse. It happens daily now. I believe there is an opportunity for a catastrophic event to happen while I am driving if this IHU problem is not corrected immediately.

WHEELS

Potential Consequences:

The Volvo XC60 re-charge/hybrid is not equipped with a spare tire. A tire repair kit is provided. I had a flat tire resulting from sidewall damage. The repair kit is ineffective for this type of tire failure. This required towing the vehicle to a tire shop for replacement. If this had happened in a rural setting, at night, or on a weekend the vehicle's occupants would have been put in danger. I was not informed of this feature at the time of sale of the vehicle. This information would have influenced my decision to purchase the vehicle. I am also told that a conventional spare tire from Volvo is not a solution to the problem as it won't support the weight of this model.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

This Volvo XC60 B8 has a serious deficiency with the 12v system and main Battery where it discharges below 10v when the vehicle sits idol for more than a week. Every 7-10 day interval the vehicle must be jump-started and driven for 30 min to recharge the 12v system. The vehicle reports itself in limp-mode until the 12v system charges above 11v then switches to normal drive mode for the remainder of the 30 min drive. I installed a battery tender to the POS and NEG posts under the hood but it charges the mild hybrid battery to full then disables continued charging of the 12v system, leaving the 12v main battery under voltage and draining while the car sits idol. We have to drive the vehicle for 30 minutes every 4-5 days to keep the battery charged. Not even Audi or Lamborghini require this much attention to their 12v systems like this 2022 Volvo. This dis-charging issue happens in all types of weather, all year long, and under any parked condition (locked or unlocked) and the factory battery charger only works on the hybrid battery, not the 12v system battery. I have owned other hybrid vehicles that can sit idol for weeks or months at a stretch and will start without issue. While parked, my Camry XLE (Toyota Synergy system mechanically disconnects their traction battery and simultaneously engages the 12v system to keep the Vehicle "aware" via sensors) will sit for months until I return to drive it normally. Volvo dealerships accept this behavior as normal although my experience with hybrid vehicles implies the opposite. I have not been able to uncover any online research that describes my issue with any resolution from Volvo or successful 3rd party auxiliary internal or external charging systems. it has been researched by Volvo to be 'within normal operating parameters'.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? -The backup camera system fails to respond intermittently. Often times the screen will remain black for several seconds while backing up before the screen shows any picture. Other times it will come on, and then flash to black while you are backing up. This is a major hazard should a child run/walk behind a car, when this occurs. I'm hoping others have expressed this problem so action can be taking. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? -Since Backup cameras are a federal requirement since 5/2018. The Failure to function on these new cars I find to be unacceptable. Even more so given that Volvo is supposed to be a brand dedicated to safety. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? -Indirectly yes, the Volvo dealership acknowledged that the new Google system is slow to respond at times. But they said a new software update would fix it. I have found this to not be the case and it seems to be happening more frequently now. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? -yes by the dealer. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? -no
