SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

The ABS System has failed twice since i have owned this vehicle. The first time on [XXX] 2022. I brought the vehicle in for repair at Victory Ram in Shallotte, NC. They replaced the ABS Module and it failed again in January of 2024. This part is not available now so I must wait for a new part to be designed. I am driving this vehicle with a malfunctioning ABS System. I believe this should be a recall as it is a safety hazard and an expensive repair that the consumer should not be responsible for. SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

My truck has 22,780 miles on it. This truck is currently in the shop having the Fifth ABS Module, ABS Control and ABS Hydraulic unit. The First time that this occurred was on 11/26/2018, 6,199 miles. I had owned the truck 16 months at this time. The Second time was on 7/6/2020, 11,982 miles (They called it an Axel Actuator this time, but it was the same error message on the dash panel as before). The Third time was on 12/14/2020, 14,930 miles. The dealer waved the deductible charges, this time, since the truck was just out of the regular warranty and this was an ongoing problem. The Fourth time was on 1/19/2024, 21,348 miles. Again, having to use extended warranty and pay the deductible. It's currently in the shop being repaired for the Fifth time for the same problem, 5/6/2024, 22,780 miles, Not even 4 months and less than 1,500 miles since the previous repair. The Dealer also said that the Brake Pedal sensor is bad this time in addition to all of the ABS parts. Once again, having to use extended warranty and pay the deductible. If I count the original ABS Equipment, this will make the Sixth ABS Equipment that has been on my truck. This is a MAJOR Safety issue due to the fact that I pull a 15,000 lb. fifth wheel RV and often times I have to come down mountains after it has failed. The Dealer has said that this an ongoing problem with the Ram 3500 & 2500 trucks. I have never had any vehicle in my entire life that has had an ABS problem, let alone this many times. Something needs to be done to correct this problem BEFORE someone is KILLED!

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INTEGRATED TRAILER BRAKE CONTROL

Potential Consequences:

The contact owns a 2017 Ram 3500. The contact stated while the vehicle was undergoing DOT inspection, the DOT inspector advised the contact to shift in neutral (N), and to activate and squeeze the brake controller manually. The contact was then advised to shift into drive (D) and to release the brake pedal while squeezing the brake controller. The contact stated that upon following the instructions, the vehicle moved forward. The DOT inspector determined that the brake controller was malfunctioning because the trailer brakes failed to prevent vehicle movement when manually activated. The contact stated that the company's mechanic replaced the 7-way pins, the 7-way pin trailer cable, the 7-way pin wiring harness box, and module, the brake controller assembly, the wiring on the front and rear axles, the brake assemblies; however, the failure persisted. The contact stated that when the brake controller was set at the max 10, the brake wire connector displayed 6.5 Volts, while the voltage should be 13.2 Volts. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 162,388.

SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

I purchased a 2017 RAM 3500 in 2018 brand new, directly from a dealer. Within the first week of ownership, truck started alerting me that there is an issue with the automatic brakes and to service the vehicle. I took the truck to my local dealer in October 2018. They confirmed issue was with the ABS system. I was told to take a rental car because it would take some time to get the parts and I wouldn’t be allowed to take my truck because it wouldn’t be safe to drive. The parts came in after some time and the truck was repaired. Almost 24 months later (September 2020), the same ABS alerts began presenting itself. The dealer confirmed that the issue was again the ABS system and I was provided with a rental car until the part was replaced. Again, 24 months later (October 2022), the ABS alerts began to persistently display and make a chime many times over and over while driving. The dealer once again confirmed the ABS was at fault and ordered parts. I was told there were no parts available and to expect several months before the truck could be serviced. This time, the dealer would not provide a rental because the truck was not considered under warranty. Six months passed (March 2023) and the dealer called to report that a part had arrived and to bring the truck for service. The dealer later called and said when the box was opened, the part appeared damaged and could not be used and to wait for another part. I waited another 5 months (August 2023) to call the dealer and ask if any parts would be coming soon. I was told that engineers at RAM recalled all the parts and none are available. I went to the dealer and received a refund for the prepaid part. My truck has had no working ABS system since October 2022. The ABS is always on 100% of the time. This is a safety issue which devalues my vehicle, if I were to try to sell it. It also poses a danger whenever I need to use it. If parts do ever become available, I do not feel I should have to pay $1,000 for the repair.

ABS light came on at 13,000 miles and was repaired under warranty. At 27,000 miles (2.5 years later), ABS has failed again, code C-020, but vehicle is out of warranty. Contacted FCA and was told "sorry, its out of warranty, pay for it yourself and keep your receipts, just in case it goes to recall". This is a know safety issue as cruise control and traction control are also tied to the ABS. Driver distraction should also be mentioned due to the entirely random but frequent chimes going off due to ABS failure. When the truck was "repaired" the first time, the bad parts were replaced with identical parts, i.e. not a redesigned, more dependable part, but the same poor design as stock.

This issue is related to 2017 Ram 3500 truck with 6.7L Turbo Diesel motor: The warning lights for the ABS and the Cruise Control intermittently activate and there is an audible alarm ding noise along with them. This ABS warning light going off intermittently indicates that if a situation arises that requires the ABS system, it may not activate as designed. Which in turn could contribute to loss of control or accident with the vehicle. This problem has been confirmed by Villa Rica Auto in Villa Rica, GA. This vehicle has been inspected by Villa Rica Auto. They advised that the problem is with a defective HCU and that part is on back order with no ETA available. This problem first appeared a few days after buying the truck from Gravity Autos Atlanta. This truck was not involved in a crash.

After having a certified diesel mechanic diagnose the problem, it was discovered that the grid heater has malfunctioned causing it to melt a bolt and break off into the engine thus causing a total engine loss. After researching online and speaking with the mechanic, this is apparently a common problem that we were unaware of. Had we been informed, we could have been proactive in preserving the engine. What could have been a pretty cheap fix has turned into a $15-$20k dollar repair job and could’ve ended with us in a wreck had we not been able to exit the road in time. I’m aware that there are no current recalls on this particular VIN. However, I would like for you to investigate the problem further because it could save consumers a lot of money and possibly their life.

Defect Description:

SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

ABS brake warning lights are on and cruise control will not work. I was told by the dealer the module had to be replaced. This truck only has 34691 miles on it now and this problem started over a year ago. Dealer said this part was not available because of supply chain issues. I have several friends with the same 2017 or 18 truck and are having the same issue. Obviously this is a defective part and is a significant safety concern being the brake system on a heavy truck
