STEERING

Potential Consequences:

Twice in the past month the steering has frozen on my 2017 Honda Accord hybrid, making it nearly impossible to turn the wheel manually. Fortunately on both occasions we were driving at low speeds on city streets and could pull over or drive slowly to a destination. There were no warnings that the steering was about to freeze, but both times the automatic lane departure light came on. In the second instance I was driving on a narrow street and I was not outside of my narrow lane or I would have hit the curb or oncoming cars. The car was checked once by a highly regarded mechanic who could find nothing wrong with the steering or electronic system. This was one day after the first incident and the steering worked normally on the short ride to the mechanic. The car has now been at the dealer's service center. I am concerned that the car is not safe to drive.

I am Air Force Active Duty, stationed in Germany. The recall was released in Jan 2019. My vehicle was on its way to Germany at the time. I took my vehicle to the Honda dealer in Frankfurt, Germany. They performed the required work to update my recall. I believe, I'm waiting on the US to update the information as "Complete". I will be leaving Germany 3 May 2022 and will need to ship my vehicle prior to my departure. I can not ship it with an open recall. Please advice on what I need to do to get the proper documentation. Thank you!

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

I purchased the car new on 9/16/16. I have had to replace the battery 4 times and I have had several incidents where the car froze/stalled, especially on left hand turns, for no reason, causing several near-misses from oncoming traffic. This is the record of car issues reported: 4/25/17 @ 9,197 miles – “freeze” issue first reported to the dealer. I did my best to describe it as a loss of power/unable to accelerate through an intersection. Upon a test drive with the service tech, I was unable to re-enact the problem. The dealer could not find any cause for the failure. 10/5/17 @ 15,604 mi - 2nd “freeze” issue reported. Dealer replaced battery stating dead cell was noted and instructed me to keep it out of ECO mode. 3/1/18 - Complained to Dealer that the car was idling rough. Could not find cause. 7/26/18 @ 26,363 mi - 3rd freeze issue complaint, however, no recommendations made. Also complained about idle and vibration in steering wheel. Could not find cause. 5/3/19 @ 36,660 mi - New battery purchased @ Interstate. 2/8/21 @ 56,785 mi - Battery purchased @ Honda for $188. Interstate refunded the purchase price of the battery from 5/19. 3/14/22 @ 73,924 mi - Battery replaced @ Honda. Dealer stated they noted the starter was sticking and it was replaced for $758. I continue to have issues with the car losing power in the middle of a turn, particularly when turning left and have adjusted the collision detection sensor. There are no warning lights or other indicators that I'm losing power... it just happens. I have adjusted by not attempting a turn in the presence of oncoming traffic.

Corrective Action:

Defect Description:

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING

Potential Consequences:

Traffic was traveling at around 55 miles per hour. The car in front had to make a quick stop to avoid hitting a flagger that could not be seen due to the sun. My car that is equipped with Hondas forward collision mitigation system did not respond. I pressed the brakes myself but did not stop in time resulting in an accident. The system does activate randomly while driving and will slam the brakes when no objects are in the path of the vehicle.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING

Potential Consequences:

While driving on an interstate, I started reducing my speed as I was approaching my exit. Before I could exit, my car automatically came to a complete stop. I was rear ended by a truck that was behind me. There were no vehicles or objects in front of me. 911 was called. The passenger in my car had to be transported to the hospital. My car and the truck had to be towed away. No warning lights appeared. My insurance company will be inspecting the car at the tow shop. Everyone involved safety was put at risk. We are thankful we are alive because this could have been worse.

Defect Description:

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING

Potential Consequences:

Driving on the highway with the adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, auto emergency braking and lane keeping assistance engaged the vehicle will occasionally initiate an un-commanded, unreasonably abrupt brake application for seemingly no reason and often with no other vehicles in the vicinity. I've noticed Honda has issued a recall for 2018-19 Accords for this exact anomaly. It only stands to reason that my vehicle is experiencing this same defect as many of these systems are shared with the 2017 Accord. I won't use this feature as is because it seems unpredictably dangerous.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: WARNINGS

Potential Consequences:

car locked down on roadway and would not respond to accelerator until brake paddle action, as it did not accommodate the transmission B mode drag and falsely detected a pending collision. plus it falsely detects exit lane markings as collisions and engages brake. Also does not factor in gravity in collision avoidance. We have an uphill steep driveway and it will lock down in the driveway to avoid hitting something that the force gravity prevents. for a bit, disabled system and talked with service and then set the distance setting to short, which seems to have improved the issue.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

I have continue to have issues with my navigation freezing. Then the whole navigation system will shut off and will eventually do a reboot in the middle of driving. It is definitely a safety hazard as you are trying to drive, navigate and try to figure out why your navigation system is breaking and not working working while driving. Especially If you are driving in an unfamiliar area using your navigation because you actually need it, then it becomes very frustrating and very dangerous and hazardous.
