SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

The low braking system on the 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid is irregular and unpredictable. In stop-and-go traffic (sub 10mph), the braking system can either give you too much or too little brakes, resulting in the vehicle's brakes automatically grabbing and producing a jarring stop. This can be noticed when pulling in to a parking spot, slowly moving to a stop at a red light or slowly driving through a parking lot. The safety risk is a wreck waiting to happen that could injure the passengers as well as nearby cars and/or pedestrians. In winter driving (which is due soon where I live), the lack of a reliable braking system could spell even more trouble. This issue seems to finally be acknowledged by Ford via SSM 51142 but not externally to the general public. Ford does not recognize this on their site and it took a lot of work to get the dealer to finally look into this and provide the SSM # above. Still the dealer has no confirmed date as to when the software update can be made to fix this issue. The vehicle has been inspected by my local Ford dealer but they of course say nothing is wrong and that I have to wait on Ford to make a decision on when the update is available. No warning signals or messages are displayed when this issue occurs. This issue has been present since I took receipt of the vehicle back on 5/13/22.

SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

Maverick Hybrid brakes are inconsistent. Sometimes you can brake smoothly, sometimes you cannot and the brakes will grab suddenly and lurch. Using Adaptive Cruise is miserable because the truck lurches back and forth and feels like it can't transition between friction and regenerative braking. There are no warnings on dash, truck has 1,000 miles. It is dangerous because getting more braking force than you anticipated can lead to being rear ended and not getting the brake force you anticipate can cause you to rear-end someone else.

SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

I recently purchased my 2022 Ford, Maverick and when slowing to a stop the brakes seem to grab and then suddenly stops as more pressure is applied to the brakes. This has also happened on multiple occasions when I pull into a parking space at speeds of about 5MPH or less when the brakes suddenly grab and the vehicle kinda jerks and can stop suddenly. I would say this has happened about 30-40 times so far. Not sure if it's a brake problem or something else. I will be bringing my vehicle to the dealership next week where I bought it, Tamiami Ford in Naples Florida, but I don't expect to get any co-operation from them as I have had issues with them from the very beginning but that is a story for another time.

Occasionally the brakes don't properly stop smooth at low speeds then suddenly lock up causing a hard stop and somewhat neck pain. Brought to dealer twice but they couldn't replicate the issue. Ford Motor Corporation was contacted by me. They are aware of the issue and working on a future software fix. They refer me to the local dealer who can't do anything until Ford comes out with a fix.

SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

Brakes suddenly grab when coming to a stop at slow speed. Although control of the vehicle is maintained on dry pavement I am concerned that it would cause loss of control in icy road conditions. Also, when this occurs while creeping ahead in heavy traffic I'm concerned that the abrupt stop could cause a rear-end collision from the vehicle following me. I believe that the problem is inherent in the design of the vehicle and that there is nothing that needs to be fixed at the dealership service department. The effect seems to occur when braking force is transferred from the hybrid's battery regeneration mode to actually applying the brakes. The date cited below is the most recent occurrence. The problem has happened sporadically since the vehicle was new, March 2022.

SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

At low speeds with partial brake pedal force applied the car doesn't stop in a controlled manner. It drifts somewhat as the driver increases the pressure on the pedal then it stops abruptly. It feels like the car isn't going to stop at all until at the last instant it almost "panic" stops. Very unnerving and potentially dangerous as the vehicle tends to drift several feet before stopping.

POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

While driving , at times the transmission suddenly stops responding when gas pedal is pushed. The engine revs but the transmission does not engage and the truck drifts to a stop. This happens every once in a while, not predictably. If you turn off the engine and wait a few minutes the transmission seems to reset itself and then drives normally for a while. Very dangerous when driving in traffic at high speed, to suddenly lose power and come to a stop. So far I’ve been lucky enough to be able to get off to the side of the road onto the shoulder. The Maverick is in for service now and I’ve told them that other Maverick owners are reporting this on owners forums.

SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

Occasionally when braking at low speed, primarily when coming up to a turn, stop sign or traffic light the brakes lockup causing the vehicle to come to an abrupt stop. Even when not changing the amount of pressure being applied the brakes act like I have applied full pressure. Most of the time it hasn’t been a safety issue but there is potential in wet/icy conditions for the vehicle to slide. Also the issue could cause someone to rear end me as they are not expecting me to suddenly stop.

SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

At low speeds, the brakes do not apply evenly or smoothly. When light pressure is applied to the brake pedal, they go from being ineffective to locking in a way that causes the vehicle to jerk as though it has been hit by another vehicle. This is very problematic in slow moving traffic conditions. Safety of myself and others are put at risk because the driver of the vehicle cannot reasonably predict the vehicle braking response. In brief discussion, various dealership representatives said that the behavior is typical for hybrid vehicles. The brake system as not been inspected to my knowledge. There have been no related warning lamps or indicators related to the brake issues.

Ford is taking an unreasonable amount of time in correcting NHTSA Recall Number 22V594. I have purchased the vehicle and the dealership will not let me take ownership until the recall is corrected. Ford estimates the parts to be available in the first quarter of 2023. Not allowing a consumer to take ownership of a vehicle for over three months after paying for it is unjust. The delay in fixing the vehicle is absurd considering the fact that other Ford Maverick's are currently being built and delivered with a safe airbag system.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

I was driving East on Rte 70 near Mt. Airy, MD at approximately 2 am the morning of Sunday, Oc. 11. at approximately 65 mph. In and instant all power to the vehicle went dead. The engine stopped and all electrical components went dead. Most importantly, my lights went out, the power steering was inoperable, and the brakes went out. It was absolutely terrifying. Because of the lack of brakes, I narrowly avoided colliding with an 18-wheeler. I was able to pull the car off the road on the right side and allow the vehicle to drift to a stop (again, no brakes) over the course of 1/4 - 1/2 mile. I called a tow truck. They towed the vehicle to Apple Ford in Columbia, MD. I am told by the Dealer that this most likely an issue with the battery wiring harness, and that Ford is aware of the issue. It's unfathomable to me that Ford would not issue a recall for this extraordinarily dangerous issue. I have contacted Ford directly. They have been nothing short of abusive. Their IVR phone system seems intentionally designed to confuse and frustrate callers. I have attempted to escalate the issue to a supervisor, given the extremely dangerous nature of the issue. The representatives and customer advocates in the Ford Customer Relations depaterment have not been helpful at all.

Corrective Action:

I was driving East on Rte 70 near Mt. Airy, MD at approximately 2 am the morning of Sunday, Oc. 11. at approximately 65 mph. In and instant all power to the vehicle went dead. The engine stopped and all electrical components went dead. Most importantly, my lights went out, the power steering was inoperable, and the brakes went out. It was absolutely terrifying. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

At 6k miles my early build 2022 ford maverick hybrid died entirely while sitting in the garage. The truck can be jumped but will not hold a charge beyond that one use. The battery is fine according to the dealer, but it appears internal connections are not correct, causing the truck to die after every use. Ford is saying this might not be under warranty when the truck is an obvious lemon. Other owners are reporting the same issue with the hybrid models on various internet pages. It seems to be a common issue that should be subject to a recall.
