Last week, I heard a popping noise when opening my driver side front door of my 2020 Ford Escape. I had the issue diagnosed by my local Ford dealership as broken spot welds on my door. Since then, the issue has progressed and my door no longer closes properly. It is a safety issue because my door is not closing properly and continuing to get worse. I do not feel comfortable driving until it is fixed. I was referred to a body shop by my local dealership for the issue and will have it repaired this week. The body shop confirmed the broken spot welds on my driver side front door.

Approximately a week ago we noticed a popping sound in our driver side door. You can see where the rivets have popped free from the sheet metal. This car is over its 3 year warranty by about one week. Yet, the dealer and Ford motor company do not want to do anything to replace our door. This is an issue that ford acknowledged as a problem on this specific car. But, no TSB or recall has been issued yet. Hopefully by leaving this message, the NHTSA will look into this concern. I don't need my wife driving this car with a door that is not safe. Thank you!

Corrective Action:
Welds that hold the driver door have broken lose causing the door to make a popping sound when opening and closing. You can see where the weld has broken and the inner brackets are no longer attached. Cant open door all the way as it causes it to bind up and not close. Tried to upload pictures but keep getting an error message.

2020 Ford Escape door welds went bad. First popping noise and then door wouldn’t close and finally got closed and couldn’t open. Hinges pulled out of door and left holes and then window could not be opened. I have been researching and this has been ongoing problem with Ford. I see where there were lots of recalls for this problem, but I am told my Ford isn’t one for recall. I don’t know why I had to pay $2,620.00 to have door replaced since they already knew about problem. I need help! Potential Consequences:
The drivers side door started to have a creaking sound and became difficult to open and close. The window was also hard to open, so I stopped and quickly put it back up. I informed the dealer and they told me they are aware of the problem but Ford isn’t covering it under warranty’s. I am currently still driving the vehicle because I have no other and am just very careful how far I open the door and I’m unable to use the window.

Defect Description:

Potential Consequences:
The driver-side door makes a very loud popping and grinding noise. While driving the vehicle approached a stop like the door suddenly opened while in motion. I took the vehicle to the dealership which told me it was the spot welds in the driver's door and that it would need to be replaced. The vehicle is at 41670 miles and is no longer under warranty. Ford is refusing to cover the repair and will not offer any assistance with helping to offset the cost of the vehicle repair. The vehicle is unsafe to drive as the door can open while in motion due to the weld failures. No warning lamps came on when the incident occurred to indicate that the door was open at any time.
