Defect Description:
ENGINE
Potential Consequences:
We currently have a 2017 Ford Edge with an Ecoboost 2.0 engine at our local Ford dealership. It began running poorly and the check engine light came on. Shortly after, it worsened with a whistling noise and more obvious cylinder misfiring. The codes for the engine light were P0303 and P0316, and was diagnosed with coolant in the cylinder. Per the service department at the dealership, this falls under Technical Service Bulletin 19-2346, with the only repair being complete engine replacement. At the time of this submission, it has been at the dealership for 12 weeks. We currently have no ETA on backordered parts to complete the repair, and will owe $4,300 for the repair when completed (originally over $11,000 quote). I would also like to reference Ford's Customer Satisfaction Program (CSP) #21N12. This CSP offers free repair to many Ecoboost 1.5L engines that have had the identical diagnosis. The associated TSB for this is 22-2134, which aside from different sized engines, is identical to the TSB associated with our vehicle.

Potential Consequences:
I have a 2017 Ford Edge with 37,383 miles on it. The check engine light came on one day as I was driving however the car was running fine. I thought it was a fault light as I’ve never had an issue with this veh. I took it in to the dealership and was told that it needed a new engine. Luckily it was covered under warranty HOWEVER it took 3 months to get my veh. back….3 weeks later the same thing happened on my 2018 Ford Escape with only 24,000 miles on it!

ENGINE
Potential Consequences:
At 84,000 miles, the vehicle displayed the Service Engine Soon light, as well as white smoke from both exhausts. The mechanic diagnosed a misfire in two cylinders. All four spark plugs were replaced. The engine light and error code for cylinder 2 persisted. The ignition coil and fuel injector for cylinder 2 were replaced. The owner researched online, found the NHTSA complaints about this engine issue and the associated technical service bulletins, and brought the vehicle to the dealership. It was determined that this was a mechanical failure not uncommon with the 2.0L Ecoboost in this vehicle, and a replacement of the longblock was required. Despite awareness and acknowledgement of the malfunctions in the Ecoboost, Ford declined any discounts or assistance to the owner for replacement of this defunct product, costing the owner $7,252.10 in parts, labor, and tax to replace the longblock.
