Tesla Blank Rear View Screen

Owners of several recent Tesla, Inc. vehicles may soon receive a notice related to a potentially dangerous rear visibility issue. The recall, identified as NHTSA Campaign Number 26V-283, involves a software defect that can cause the rearview camera image to remain blank for up to 11 seconds after the vehicle is placed in reverse.

The issue affects approximately 218,868 vehicles and involves certain versions of Tesla’s 2026.8.6 software update.

Which Tesla Vehicles Are Affected?

Only vehicles operating software version 2026.8.6 are impacted. The recall includes certain:

  • 2017, 2021-2023 Tesla Model 3
  • 2021-2023 Tesla Model S
  • 2021-2023 Tesla Model X
  • 2020-2023 Tesla Model Y

What Is the Problem?

According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a software configuration issue may prevent camera streams from being sent to the vehicle’s Media Control Unit immediately after the vehicle wakes up.

As a result, drivers who shift into reverse shortly after entering the vehicle could experience a blank rearview camera display for up to 11 seconds.

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 111 requires rear visibility systems to display an image within a specific timeframe. Because the delayed image fails to meet those requirements, Tesla issued a voluntary recall.

Why This Matters

Modern vehicles increasingly rely on rearview camera systems to help drivers avoid collisions while reversing. A delayed or missing camera image can reduce visibility behind the vehicle and increase the risk of backing accidents.

Tesla noted that drivers can still reverse using traditional methods such as:

  • Shoulder checks
  • Side mirrors
  • Rear mirrors

However, the absence of the camera feed may still create a safety risk, especially in crowded parking lots, residential driveways, or areas with pedestrians.

How Tesla Responded

According to the recall timeline:

  • April 10, 2026: Tesla firmware engineers identified the issue on an engineering vehicle running software version 2026.8.6.
  • April 11, 2026: Tesla began rolling out software version 2026.8.6.1 via an over-the-air update to correct the issue.
  • April 13–24, 2026: Tesla analyzed fleet data and identified potentially affected vehicles.
  • April 27, 2026: Tesla officially determined that a safety noncompliance existed and initiated the recall.

As of May 1, 2026:

  • Tesla had received 27 warranty claims
  • Tesla had received 2 field reports
  • Tesla reported no known crashes, injuries, or fatalities related to the issue

The Fix

Unlike many traditional recalls that require a dealership visit, this issue can be corrected remotely. Tesla has already deployed an over-the-air software update designed to restore proper rearview camera functionality.

Most affected vehicles may already have received the update automatically through the vehicle’s software update system. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on July 3, 2026.
