Mercedes Benz Oil Leaks And Rear End Weld Cracks

Mercedes Benz will be contacting the owners of certain 2020 GL Series and 2018-2019 S560 vehicles because of two separate recalls. The first affects the rear chassis frame cross-member and the second involves a leak within the oil system.

Recall 20V-172: A small number of Mercedes Benz GLE350, GLE450 and GLS450 vehicles are being recalled by the manufacturer because they may have been produced with insufficient welding on the rear crossmember frame. If the rear towing eye is used to tow the vehicle, cracks could develop in the welds and the rear crossmember could detach from the vehicle. Because of the nature of the failure, drivers will not receive an advance warning that there is a problem. Dealers will correct the problem by replacing the rear crossmember.

Recall 20V-173: Mercedes Benz has also determined that a problem exists in certain 2018-2019 Mercedes Benz S560 and 2018-2019 Mercedes Maybach S560 vehicles. According to the defect report, because of a deviation in the manufacturing process of oil plugs, some plugs may not be able to withstand the high engine loads during driving. If the plug leaks and the oil level falls below a certain limit, the driver will be alerted through a warning message, but if the message is ignore, the engine could be damaged. Owners receiving notices will be asked to return to their dealerships to have the engine oil plug replaced.
