NHTSA Campaign: 24V838000 SAFETY RECALL
206.5K Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Nov 7, 2024
Safety Issue:

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles. A malfunction in the antilock-brake system (ABS) module may incorrectly illuminate the brake lights and disable the ABS and electronic stability control (ESC). In addition, the vehicle operator may be able to start and shift out of Park without the brake pedal being applied.

Potential Risk:
A vehicle that can be started and shifted out of Park without applying the brake pedal can result in a vehicle rollaway. Disabled ABS and ESC systems can reduce vehicle handling and control in certain driving situations. Brake lights that incorrectly illuminate can fail to properly indicate the driver's intention to following traffic. Any of these scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Dealers will replace the integrated pressure transducer and update the ABS module software, as necessary free of charge. Interim owner letters were mailed December 5, 2024. A second notice will be mailed once the final remedy is available, anticipated September 2025. Owners may contact FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is 94B. This recall replaces previous recall number 22V-426. Vehicles previously remedied under 22V-426 will need to have the new remedy completed.

AIR BAGS

Potential Consequences:

I was driving my Jeep on Sunday, [XXX] and the service airbag system light kept coming on periodically. When I took it to Szott dealership Service center in White Lake, Michigan. On my drive to the dealership the light never popped on. The service guy said it looked like it was the wiring under the driver's seat. I had to wait for a diagnostic tech to check it out. The tech confirmed it was a wiring issue under the driver's seat. The dealership said it is NOT covered under my extended warranty and it will cost $679 to repair. I realize I need to repair for safety issues. My question is an airbag is important safety feature and Jeep should be responsible and stand behind their product to ensure safety for their customers so, why should I have to pay out of pocket to repair a safety feature that should be functioning properly? I store my jeep in a garage. I have not been in an accident or in a flood...so why am I liable when it is a defective part or wiring? Potential Consequences:

While at the dealer to have a lightbulb changed, I was told that I needed to have my oil adapter changed. My jeep only has 33,750 miles on it and has only been serviced by the jeep dealer. While I was there there were 2 other jeeps in with the same problem. Also, my brother-in-law's brother (who lives in another state) also had to have his oil adapter replaced on his jeep grand cherokee. Does jeep have a defective part installed in the grand cherokees? If not, I find it odd that so many people (that I do not know personally) have had to have the same part replaced on their jeep grand cherokees.

SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

Our 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee started to exhibit the following conditions: brake lights remained ON, ESC failure, AutoPark Failure, Cruise Control failure, vehicle started without depressing the brake pedal. I researched possible recalls and found Z48 for HCU/ABS module failures. Our vehicle was in the recalled build dates. We took it to Palace Chrysler Jeep Ram Inc. in Lake Orion, MI for repair. They "reflashed" the software, cleared the fault codes and returned the vehicle to us. In 3 key cycles, the failures returned. We took the car back to the dealership. They stated that the reflash wasn't done correctly. (blamed machine error) Reset the fault codes and in 3-5 key cycles the problem returned. Now on the third try, the dealership replaced the HCU/ABS module and charged us $1,100 for the repair. We requested reimbursement from Stellantis and have been denied 3 times. This is completely unacceptable since the Recall Z48 is for this exact problem. Also, it proves that their SW reflash doesn't fix the problem in some vehicles. We want Stellantis to reimburse us for this repair.

STEERING

Potential Consequences:

ISSUE: While in a left hand turn the steering wheel will stick and not return on it's own! My vehicle began having the following issue randomly in July of 2023 while in a gradual left turn onto the entrance ramp of the interstate. The steering wheel did not return on it's own and felt stuck. I had to give the steering wheel a slight tug to recover control. As of November 2023 the issue has become more evident in left hand turns! I initially looked for recall issues on the Jeep recall but non avail. The other day while on a short trip, the vehicle began to act squirrely while in lefthand curves and while making lefthand turns more frequently. I began researching the internet and quickly became aware that this seems to be an issue with this particular make, model and year. Upon further reading on different forums and finally the NHTSA page, I looks like dealers have pin pointed the cause to the failure of the rack and pinion assembly failure. On November 27th I contacted my local dealership for service. Initially I was told that there were no recalls reported on the vehcle. I then proceeded to explain the issues in detail and my research with the results on The NHTSA site. A service appointment has been made and I was asked to bring all supported documentation.

Hello, The Z48 recall for my vehicle has been completed by the manufacturer back on 5/1/23. They have failed to notify NHTSA that the recall has been completed so it keeps showing up as incomplete.
