Defect Description:
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Potential Consequences:
The fuel system on the model year is new and different than previous years. This new design has the fuel pump pickup above the lowest point of the tank While traveling at highway speeds on paved roads the engine will stop with approximately 20% of the fuel capacity still remaining in the tank and without warning. The manufacturer has claimed the design is an off road feature that relies on fuel splashing on an absorbent pad from rough terrain- which does not happen on maintained roads. The end result is a highway certified vehicle that stalls during normal operations. Users are encouraged to shake the motorcycle while riding it, or perform dangerous maneuvers to “splash” the fuel to the pickup. Clearly this warrants a mandatory safety recall and solution by the manufacturer to correct.
