VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

Potential Consequences:

My Expedition has adaptive cruise control. I was driving on the interstate at around 65 mph with the adaptive cruise set. I was raining, so I set it to max range. It worked fine for the first few minutes of rain. As cars started to slow down, mine sped up and put me in an extremis situation where I had to forcibly apply the brakes. It was following the car in front of mine fine at around 55 mph, but then sped up despite the car getting closer as if there wasn't a car there. Only after I applied the brakes did I start getting an error that adaptive cruise and collision assist were not working due to a sensor being blocked. I've driven in rain many times and have never had this error. As far as I can tell the forward sensor failed due to moisture and instead of the adaptive cruise turning off, it actually caused the vehicle to accelerate since cruise was set to 65 mph. Sensor failed in a 5 minute rain storm. Software design does not fail safe, but rather the opposite.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

For the fourth time our brand new Ford Expedition has had a issue with the SYNC radio B&O Sound system. It initially started out where the 15.5 inch screen locked up and no radio, Bluetooth would work and couldn’t even control climate. The dealer got to see this first hand and had no interest in investigating. Now the last three times has been a HORRIFYING pop and extremely loud static and popping like fire works inside the car. Two of the three times luckily my wife wasn’t driving. The most recent time this happened as we were driving down the road and THANKFULLY no car was in the opposite lane as it caused me to jump and swerve because i though we had been hit. This could have ended very badly under the wrong timing and especially with my 4 year old and infant in the car which they also started screaming because it was ear piercing. After a little investigation I have come to see this is no new issue with the Ford Sync B&O sound system. Some people have stated the dealers complimentary changed the amplifiers and seemed to have solved the problem. Sadly the two dealers in my area will not even look into it unless the problem is currently occurring. The bad part is that the next time it does occur could be detrimental to the life of my wife and kids!

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

Potential Consequences:

Rear cabin lights do not come on when doors are opened. When manually turned on, at times, rear cabin lights will turn on and not be able to be turned off. This created a hazard while driving at night/early morning. We had to cover interior lighting to be able to drive safely. I feel this is a product issue. Dealer said it’s normal working order.

VISIBILITY:SUN/MOON ROOF ASSEMBLY

Potential Consequences:

On 2/20/23 my spouse was driving northbound around 9:30 am. When she heard what she describes as a gun shot. She immediately called me and I told her to pull over to the closest and safest spot. She explained that it sounded like the glass sunroof exploded. She climbed up to find that was the case. There was a huge gaping hole right in the center of the sunroof. We immediately took the 2022 Expedition to a Ford dealership close by. The dealership stated that Ford has not issued a bulletin or recall and because of that could not cover the repair under warranty. They stated that the damage indicates that an object hit the glass. I feel that this could not be correct since the glass is facing outward and the manner of which the glass shattered. Further I searched the internet and found that there have been several others dealing with the same issue. I came here hoping that by submitting this complaint Ford owns up to the issues that their consumers are having. Thank you, [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

I just had the same issue described in the forum listed below. Extremely loud max volume screeching static through the speakers. Tried turning the car off and on several times, tried turning the radio off, tried switching to Serius xm radio, nothing would make it stop and it was completely unsafe to drive it like that. It was too loud to hear anything else over it and it was so jarring. I now have a headache and i’m nervous to drive it for fear of it happening again. My husband had to disconnect the battery to get it to stop. I have a video but it doesn’t seem like I can upload it here, only pics. https://www.f150gen14.com/forum/threads/extremely-loud-electrical-pop-followed-by-loud-static.9591/page-4

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

Potential Consequences:

General: While driving this rental vehicle over the span of three days, I noticed and confirmed over a dozen times that the vehicle's speed control would dramatically increase with NO driver input or actions. Specific: The vehicle's cruise control would be on and active, set at various speeds; 55, 60, 65, 70, 75 (long, straight road with varying speed limits). In different circumstances (sometimes when being overtaken by another vehicle, or cresting a hill or when beginning to climb a hill), the speed control, while set would immediately, with no driver input other than light steering INCREASE to 15-30 mph above the speed at which the cruise control was set. Over the period of three days of rental I was able to verify this behavior many times and I was able to capture a video that shows the speed set increase from 65 mph to 90 mph immediately, and the vehicle would begin aggressive acceleration. I have a clear video of the steering wheel and gauge cluster that I cannot attach to this report, but will email upon request. In the video, the malfunction is at the 13 second mark. In this video, the speed control setting increased from 65mph immediately to 90mph and the vehicle started accelerating. Switching the speed control off, or tapping the brake ceased the acceleration, as expected. Vehicle was reported to National car rental and an attempt was made to report it to Ford. Because it was a rental, I am unaware of any corrective action or inspection that may have, or may take place.

AIR BAGS

Potential Consequences:

The contact owns a 2022 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 45 MPH, a vehicle that was making a U-turn crashed into the rear passenger side door and that after the impact, all of the air bags failed to deploy. The contact's son, who was seated in the front passenger seat, had his seatbelt retractor failed to lock as a result he lunged forward from the impact and causing him to hit his chest against the instrument panel. Additionally, the contact stated that her other son was seated in the rear passenger seat and that after the impact, his seat belt was unlatched inadvertently and hit the window. No warning lights were illuminated. A police report was filed. The contact stated that her son, who was seated in the front passenger seat required medical attention and was taken to the hospital for a CT of his sternum and that all other passengers had whiplash. The vehicle has not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened and the contact was advised to file a complaint with the NHTSA Hotline. The approximate failure mileage was 94,000.
