50.4K Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Nov 19, 2021
Safety Issue:

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2013-2018 328d, 328d xDrive, 2014-2018 328d Sports Wagon, 328d xDrive Sports Wagon, 2014-2016 535d, 535d xDrive, 2015 740Ld xDrive, 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d SAV, and 2014-2017 X5 xDrive35d SAV diesel vehicles equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module with an integrated cooler. The EGR cooler may leak internally, causing coolant to mix with diesel engine soot, which could result in smoldering particles and a melting intake manifold.

Potential Risk:
A melting intake manifold increases the risk of a fire.
FREE Recall Solution:
Dealers will replace the EGR cooler and inspect the intake manifold, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. This recall includes all vehicles previously recalled under 18V-755. Vehicles previously recalled under 18V-755 will need to have the new remedy performed for this recall. An interim owner notification letter was mailed on January 18, 2022. The remedy is expected to be available in June 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 6, 2022. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

8.5K Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Mar 26, 2020
Safety Issue:

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2013-2016 328d xDrive sedans and 2013-2015 328d xDrive station wagon vehicles. The constant-velocity joint which transfers power between the transfer case and the rear drive shaft, may become damaged, possibly resulting in loss of power to the rear wheels.

Potential Risk:
A loss of power to the rear wheels can affect vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the vehicle is parked after a loss of power to the rear wheels and the parking brake is not engaged, unintended rollaway can occur, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
FREE Recall Solution:
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the constant-velocity joint and inspect the transfer case, replacing it if necessary, free of charge. The recall began May 22, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Recall Date: Oct 25, 2018
Safety Issue:

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2013-2018 BMW 328d and 328d xDrive, 2014-2018 328d Sports Wagon and 328d xDrive Sports Wagon, 2014-2016 535d and 535d xDrive, 2015 740Ld xDrive, 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d SAV and 2014-2017 X5 xDrive35d SAV vehicles equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module with an integrated cooler. If the EGR cooler leaks internally, the coolant can mix with diesel engine soot. The high EGR temperatures may result in these particles possibly smoldering and melting the intake manifold.

Potential Risk:
The melting intake manifold can increase the risk of a fire.
FREE Recall Solution:
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the EGR cooler as necessary. If a leak has already occurred, the engine intake manifold will also be replaced. These repairs will be made free of charge. The recall began May 13, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Defect Description:

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

(1) Failed component: High Pressure Fuel Pump (2) The vehicle complete shut down without warning leaving the driver stranded on the road. (3) The problem has been assessed and confirmed. (4) The vehicle has been inspected by a certified BMW mechanic. (5) There was no warning prior to failure. Description: While driving at approximately 30 mph, the vehicle shut down. I was told by a certified BMW mechanic that the high pressure fuel pump imploded, sending metal chards through the fuel injection line thereby disabling the vehicle entirely. I inquired as to whether or not a recall had been issued and BMW told me it had not been issued for my vehicle. I have since learned that a recall was issued due to this exact problem but my VIN was not included in the recall, even though it is the year make and model associated with this very problem. The breakdown/disintegration of the equipment sending metal chard throughout the fuel line disabled and ruined the entire fuel system and its components with repairs costs estimated at $15,285. My car is within the ten year warranty but outside of the 120,000 miles. This is for the 328D xdrive wagon.

Defect Description:

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

The high-pressure fuel pump failed causing the engine to stop completely without any prior warning and the car put itself in park on the highway and would not get out of park to go into neutral or any other gear. This could have caused a very serious crash and highly increased my risk of injury or death. You are more than welcome to inspect it. It is currently sitting at the dealership waiting for a resolution. My safety and the safety of many others on the 65mph highway were put at risk when the car completely stopped in the middle of the road and would not move until the tow truck arrived to drag it on their truck (would not even go into neutral). The problem was confirmed by the BMW dealership of Cincinnati and inspected by them as well. There were absolutely no warning messages, signs, or anything informing me of an issue before this occurred. However, once the car was towed and we turned it back on once it arrived at the dealership and warning lamp appeared on the dashboard. Here is the link to the video the dealership sent me after it was inspected :: https://api.mykaarma.com/video-walkaround/details?inspection_uuid=633c93939e372707d24145f0&fileType=video

SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

THIS CAR WAS PURCHASED NEW WITH THE OPTIONAL "ACTIVE CRUISE CONTROL" (ACC). UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS THE CAR ACCELERATES UNEXPECTEDLY. WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED BY THE DRIVER, THE ACC ENGAGEMENT SHOULD ALWAYS BE TERMINATED. IN CERTAIN SITUATIONS THE ACC REMAINS ENGAGED DESPITE THE DRIVER'S USE OF THE BRAKES. WHEN THE ACC IS ENGAGED AND DETECTS AN OBJECT AHEAD, THE BRAKES MAY BE APPLIED AUTOMATICALLY BY THE ACC. IF, WHILE THE BRAKES ARE STILL BE APPLIED BY THE ACC AND THE DRIVER ALSO PRESSES THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE ACC SHOULD BE DISENGAGED AND REMAIN OFF. HOWEVER, IF THE OBJECT PREVIOUSLY DETECTED AHEAD HAS CLEARED AND THE DRIVER RELEASES THE BRAKES, THE ACC CONTROL IS RESTORED AND THE CAR ACCELERATES. THIS IS A DANGEROUS AND CONFUSING RESPONSE. DRIVERS INSTINCTIVELY EXPECT ANY CRUISE CONTROL TO DISENGAGE IMMEDIATELY AND REMAIN DISENGAGED UPON BRAKE APPLICATION.THE BMW ACTIVE CRUISE CONTROL DOES NOT PERFORM THIS WAY IN THE SITUATION DESCRIBED. THIS ACC RESPONSE IS A REPEATABLE DEFECT THAT HAS CAUSED ME TO EXPERIENCE A HAZARDOUS SITUATION WHILE DRIVING.

THIS ACC RESPONSE IS A REPEATABLE DEFECT THAT HAS CAUSED ME TO EXPERIENCE A HAZARDOUS SITUATION WHILE DRIVING.
