Paint Peeling on my 2016 Acura MDX with color code NH 603P. This is a frequent problem-- so frequent that Acura issued a service bulletin 19-029. I am hoping for a full recall. the problem is Acura claims this is based on VIN. If you google "problems with 2016 Acura MDX with paint peeling" you will find a SLEW of owners with this same problem but the VIN is not eligible for reimbursement (mine was not eligible either based on my VIN). This is a problem with the color code NOT the VIN. Can NHTSA request a full recall to Acura for all vehicles identified in Service Bulletin 19-029 regardless of the VIN??? Clearly there is a problem with the year, make, model, color code regardless of the VIN>

Potential Consequences:

We have a 2016 Acura MDX and it has automatically shifted to Neutral 3 times (twice while driving on the freeway and 1x yesterday while driving on the street at normal speeds) in the last 2 months. On the MDX dashboard, it will display "Emissions System Problem" and then display "Stop Driving When Safe. Transmission Problem. See Manual." However, the car will automatically shift to Neutral within seconds. My children's lives (7 y/o and 5 y/o) were placed in danger as a result of this system failure. I have contacted the Acura Honda Recall Specialists and Client Relations Representatives. The car is being diagnosed at Cerritos Acura dealership at the present time. A case number has been filed since our VIN shows no recall, despite it having recalls for other 2016 Acura MDXs.

STRUCTURE:BODY

Potential Consequences:

White paint is peeling on roof and exposing bare metal. Risk of rust, corrosion and structural degradation. Background: Acura/Honda knows of an issue with their White Pearl paint from 2016 and has issued a TSB to address the paint on certain VIN numbers. However, many owners are finding that even though they have a 2016 White Acura MDX, the VIN is not covered by the TSB. The TSB extends the warranty to 8 years for any peeling of the white paint. Acura/Honda states that only the VINs that are in range of the TSB are affected, however many owners are experiencing the peeling/chipping of the paint even thought their VIN is not in range. A popular online forum, [XXX] has multiple discussions on VINs not in range but still experiencing the peeling/chipping issue. I have attached links to just a few of the discussions I found. ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

After traveling about on a 4 hour drive, my daughter who was driving the vehicle slowed down to make a turn. That's when she heard a loud clanking noise coming from the engine. She immediately pulled over and turned off the engine/vehicle. I went to meet her, and replicated the same problem when I turned the ignition switch to to on. It sounded as if there was some large piece of metal loose inside the engine -- it did not have consistency and was highly variable with regards to the sound it was making. The "Check Engine" light was on. Fortunately this did not occurr going at high/freeway speeds, yet the safety was compromised when my daughter was fortunate enough to leverage the momentum to get to the side of the road. Additionally, she was not in a spot where there was a shoulder/it was under an overpass, so she had to be careful and turned on her emergency lights. We had the vehicle towed to the nearby Honda Dealer. I am attaching their report and findings. They recommended engine be replaced; which we agreed to have done. Additionally, we continue to have problems due to the mounting and shacking which we believe comes from the installment of the new engine. We are submitting that report as well. At present, my daughter is not driving the vehicle and is relying on rides or borrowing other people's vehicles.

[XXX] 7 pm. As I was on the highway, warning lights came on the dashboard, “failing transmission, emission failure, and side mirrors failure.” I soon lost a lot of power. I purchased this 2016 Acura MDX in 2019 at Acura of Concord as a Pre-owned Certified with 20k miles. At the time of the transmission failure I had put an additional 17k miles. Total cost for a new transmission was nearly $8000. This does not seem fair to have to replace a transmission with so little miles. It seems as though this vehicle is a lemon. Approximately 3 weeks later, as I coming up the driveway, I noticed a huge chip of paint missing in front of the sunroof area. Now this appears Exactly as the recall or extended warranty demonstrates for 2014-2016 MDX White Diamond Pearl NH-603P. Honda claims this “VIN Does not qualify” for this extended warranty. Even the service manager at Acura of Concord exclaimed, ”How they explain to me that this vehicle does not qualify when it is the same year model, same paint, and that the paint chipped off Exactly the same way as described in the extended warranty recall.” In other words, Honda is forcing me to reach out to you because this VIN is not on the list and they do not wish to acknowledge that they are at fault. I do not feel that it right that I paid $8000 for a new transmission, and now I will have to pay $5303.70 to repair the paint on the roof. Please help me in this matter. The paint on the roof of my 2016 Acura MDX is peeling, as described in Acura Service Bulletin 19-029 in August 28, 2019. The paint code NH-603P matched the service bulletin but Acura is denying me of any warranty because of VIN. This is a known problem for 2014 - 2016 Honda and Acura White Diamond or Pearl White paint NH-603P many people have the same issues based from a quick search on Google but Honda and Acura are denying many people because they ARE NOT expanding the VIN and or only restricting and addressing certain locations. There are no dent or scratches on my roof, no sign of weather damage. They used the same paint and same problem as service bulletin so obviously the problem was not addressed to all 2014 - 2016 MDX. Manufacture should be held responsible and expand their service to other customers with the same paint code as well.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

While driving our well-maintained 2016 Acura MDX on a 30-minute drive on [XXX] , I heard a pop, and then the engine lost power. I couldn't get the RPMs over 2500. A fluttering noise evolved into knocking and the vehicle became increasingly sluggish and heavy. The check engine light started blinking, but the vehicle's temperature gauge showed no changes. There wasn't any smoke or unusual smells. I felt terrified trying to get safely onto the side of the road with cars driving at full speed. I had the car dropped off at our local service station and the owner determined that the engine cylinder was loose and lost compression with a knock. He says that the engine light did not give a code. The owner determined that we need to replace the engine. A rebuilt engine will cost us $8,000. When I called Acura, the service person I spoke with seemed surprised that our 8-year-old car with only 77,000 miles needed a new engine. Since Acura has so many cars to deal with on the latest recall, he said it would be weeks before anyone can look at it. I researched and found that our VPN was NOT included in the recent recall of 2016-2020 model year MDX vehicles all with the same problems. How can that be???? The vehicle was purchased at Mullers Woodfield Acura, 1099 W. Higgins Rd., Hoffman Estates, IL 60169, Tel. 847-519-9550 on [XXX]. I came home with the vehicle when it was dark. In the morning, I inspected the car and noticed paint issues where the bumper meets the painted metal and some areas around the sunroof and side edges of the roof. The dealer would not exchange for different vehicles; they offered to paint the areas, which they did through their insurance. Sometime later, around 2019, I noticed a small patch of paint missing on the roof. I took the vehicle to the dealer, where I found a Service Bulletin regarding this issue. The service bulletin dated 08/29/2019 was for the same problem I was experiencing. My dealer advised me that my VIN does not match the service bulletin. They quoted me $2,400 to repaint the car after they filed with Acura Care, which denied accountability. I went back and forth between the dealer and Honda Care but was nowhere. Nobody is taking responsibility for this manufacturer defect. I contacted them again today and was denied. I could not file a complaint with the person I spoke with, who stated she was the manager. This vehicle had paint issues from the start, and I reported it to the dealer and Honda Care and gave the Service Bulletin the vehicle year, paint color, and the claim the dealer filed with Honda Care. Pictures were taken, and the claim was denied because my VIN number is not listed with the Service Bulletin that came out. I am filing a complaint for a manufacturer defect that occurred with my vehicle from day 1, and neither the Dealer nor Honda Care wants to take responsibility. I am asking for a review of how the manufacturer can get away with this without any responsibility, especially since a service bulletin was issued. Please note that I am now divorced, and the vehicle is in my maiden name, [XXX] . My address is [XXX] . [XXX] . ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

I am writing to bring to your immediate attention a critical safety issue with my 2016 Acura MDX, and the subsequent exclusion of my vehicle from a known recall that directly addresses the problems we are experiencing. Without any prior warning, we began hearing a fluttering sound coming from the engine whenever we accelerated. This noise progressively worsened and evolved into a pronounced knocking noise.Concurrently, the vehicle became increasingly sluggish and heavy, resulting in significant difficulty when accelerating. Despite these alarming symptoms, the vehicle's temperature gauge showed no changes, there was no smoke or unusual smells, and the check engine light did not activate. Gravely concerned for our safety, we promptly took the vehicle to our local mechanic for a thorough inspection. The diagnosis revealed significant engine damage, specifically to the connecting rod bearings and the crankshaft. Given the severity of the issue, we then brought the vehicle to the closest Acura dealership, Pohanka Acura. The service advisor informed us of a recall affecting the engine and rod bearings in the 2016 Acura MDX model. They also confirmed that our vehicle's engine was indeed damaged due to the same rod bearings and crankshaft issue described in the recall. However, despite this clear evidence, we were informed that our vehicle's VIN was excluded from the recall repair. The technician who performed the diagnostic on our vehicle recommended a new short engine block, which is was concerning especially since it mirrors the known recall issue. I am requesting that the NHTSA urgently investigate this matter. I hope the NHTSA treats this issue with the utmost urgency and seriousness it warrants. The safety of Acura MDX owners is at stake, and immediate action is essential to prevent further incidents and ensure our safety. Thank you for your prompt attention to this critical matter. I await your swift response and resolution. Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA),
