i just purchased a new c70 volvo and i am having some problems already. (1) there was a little snow on the ground from a snow drift and the vehicle would not stop when i pressed the brake pedal. the car was sliding all over the place as if i was on oil and as though the tires were not touching the ground. subsequently, i called the corporate offce 800.452.1552 and they said that it's because i have 17 in low profile tires on the car which tends to get on top of the snow and now suggests that i purchase 15 in snow tires. is this going to be a problem in the rain as well? i already spent $45,000! (2) because of the design of the convertible top, i can't see out of the back right side. the company told me to readjust my mirrors and said that the view is limited in all convertibles. i almost hit something backing out of a space because i couldn't see (entire area covered w/the blacktop material). why can't they insert a small plastic-like widow there? (3) the back of my driver's seat keeps locking up when i pull it foward towards steering wheel. by doing so, i can't get into the car. it doesn't matter if the engine is running or not. it happened 2 times already and once i was in the middle of the street blocking traffic. (i got out of the car and moved the seat back to put something in the back and that's when it got stock). sometimes, the seat motor works and other times it does not. when i bought the car, they kept it an additional two days because there was a problem w/the front seat control module affecting the drivers side seat. they assured me that i was not getting a defective vehicle. a service peson told me that it's a regular problem and that drivers just don't know how to move the seats properly. corporate told me that there is no recall and that the local laws would determine if volvo could buy my car back. do i have to wait for an accident before nhtsa investigates?*ak

SEATS

front seat design is uncomfortable and pushes in drivers back at a point that makes the back hurt. i cannot drive for more than 30 minutes due to the pain. this also happens to my husband, who is much taller, so i assume it is happening to many drivers. there are three sections on the seat back, and the middle section sticks out at the point your back wants to stick out, not get pushed in, making it very uncomfortable. this has been a problem since i purchased the car. the dealer looked at it and said there was nothing wrong with the seat.

STEERING

since the purchase in august 2003, my c70 convertible has turning problems and i can't safely make a u-turn in traffic or park in a parking space. the wheel turns only to a certain point and then stops. the incompetent volvo service dept. has said that i need my "stops" adjusted - why would they be there in the first place? i bring the car in for service and they do some meaningless service and the steering is temporarily fixed for a short period of time. when i brought it in to service another time, they told me my tires were the wrong size - it's the tires that volvo put on the car, not me. the steering wheel shakes significantly between 30-45 mph and, again, they told me it's the tires. the auto-dim mirror does not dim since i leased the vehicle and volvo service told me that it only works when headlights from oncoming traffic hits the sensor. what???? i have literally been blinded by traffic behind me that i pull over to the side of the road until they pass. the mirror does not work and is causing me not to drive at night for my own safety. volvo has produced an unsafe vehicle and will not take responsibility for it. i take my life in my hands every time i get into the vehicle. i know other volvo owners that are experiencing the steering wheel shaking problem and they are not getting satisfaction. i have also talked other people and advised them not to lease or purchase this c70 convertible. my car is 18 months old and i have only 12000 miles on it because i am frightened to drive it. *jb

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

on 6/29/2005, i was driving my 2004 volvo c70 on a four lane road when suddenly the engine raced and then all gauges went dead. the steering wheel locked, the brakes locked and i had absolutely no control of my vehicle. fortunately, at that moment there were no cars around me and somehow after 5-10 seconds, i was able to get my car off the road. i was very frightened that serious injury and or death to myself or someone else might have been caused. i contacted road service and had the car towed to volvo of tampa, florida. the following day i received a call from the service department stating that they had checked the computer and then test drove the vehicle about 20 miles, but found nothing wrong. i was told i could pick up my car. i had a discussion with chris in the service department stating that i was petrified to get behind the wheel again. i questioned how the problem was resolved and received no acceptable explanation. i told him i would be out of town until 7/5/05 and that he needed to discuss the situation with the service manager. today, 7/6/05 i received a call from eric, a manager and was told the same thing. i again explained how frightened i was and told him that i would like another vehicle to drive while this situation was being resolved. eric told me absolutely not. he stated that there is "no defective component". he told me that he would test drive the car and call me back. i have not spoken with him again at this time. i had complained previously about shaking and engine racing and the problem still has not been resolved. because of all the problems i have had with this vehicle i have not driven it more than absolutely necessary. with this most recent, possible life threatening situation i want volvo to buy this vehicle back. i will not risk my life or the life of others. i believe this volvo contains serious defects that pose the potential for loss of life and/or serious injury to myself, my family and anyone else on the highway.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

the 2004 volvo xc70 will just stop while i am driving. it has happened at least 5 times in the last 1.5 years. there is no pattern to the problem. it is very intermittent. i was in a situation whereby i was driving 65 mph on a major nj highway with a tractor trailer barreling down on me when the car just stopped, losing all power, - including power steering and flashers so that i can warn others of the problem i am having. last week, i was driving on local roads, 30 mph with my child, and it happened again. the local and respectable dealership was aware of it and has tried to address the issue, but they have very little information to go on. however, the bottom line that i have no warning as to when this will happen . did not sputter and no warning lights went on, until after the car was stopped). i am affraid to drive the car, and more importantly i am nervous about tranporting my children in it. on the whole, we love volvo and this is our 3rd consecutive lease from the same dealership, but this is becoming a serious concern for my family. the "safe" volvo that i bought into when i had my first child, is no longer safe. *ak

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

car began lurching/chugging forward as i tried to accelerate onto the highway, reminiscent of spark plug problems, except that the plugs were replaced the day before. car slowed to "limp" mode and "reduced engine performance" light came on. after shutting the car off, waiting a minute or two, i was able to start it and drive without problems. the exact same thing happened exactly one week later. i took it in to the dealer and was told they couldn't find anything wrong--no codes were coming back on the computer and that it was a weather related issue. less than one week after getting it back it did the same thing, thankfully, after i crossed a major road. this time the check engine light came on, as did the "engine system service required" message. according to the dealer, the throttle control needs to be cleaned and possibly the mass airflow sensor needs to be replaced. i thought volvo had fixed this on '02 and later. guess not. this isn't just an inconvenient problem, it's highly dangerous. i was fortunate enough the three times that this happened (within 3 weeks) to be able to pull over and out of traffic. had i been in heavier traffic, i easily could have been in an accident or worse on the highway.

i have a 2004 xc70 with 56,000 miles. recently, the "reduced engine performance" light came on with no apparent change in handling or acceleration. the light then went off the next time i drove the car. a few days later, the light came back on this time along with the "check engine" light, and there was virtually no acceleration. i got the car to limp along at about 5 mph with the hazard lights on to the closest garage, where i left it overnight. the mechanic ran the diagnostics on the computer and the code for the throttle body appeared. he cleaned the throttle body but indicated that might not totally solve the problem and that if it needed to be replaced it would have to be done at a dealer. (other than several oil changes, all scheduled maintenance has been performed at a volvo dealer.) the car worked well for about a week and then the "check engine" and "reduced engine performance" lights came back on. i took the car to the volvo dealer. initially they couldn't find anything wrong with it, they drove it about 20 miles and claimed no lights came on and the computer did not show any diagnostic codes. they upgraded the software to smooth out the gear shifting in the automatic transmission and at my request did the 60,000 mile servicing. then, when i went to pick the car up, both lights came back on in the service department immediately after i started the car. the service advisor took the car back into the shop, ran the diagnostics again and confirmed the throttle body needed to be replaced. car is no longer under warranty and the service advisor indicated there were no recalls for this issue for this model year. after a few days in the shop, the car is now working well but i no longer trust it - had this happened on a highway it would have been very dangerous.

the events leading up to the failure of my vehicle (which has occurred 4 times in the last 9 months) are described in this volvo recall. however, my xc70 is a 2004 but is having this identical issue. (a software glitch is responsible for 11,993 volvo models being recalled by the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa). the campaign includes model year 2008-2010 s80 models, 2010 s60 models, 2009-2010 xc70 models, and the 2010 xc60, all running faulty software in their central electronic modules (cem). according to nhtsa, the signal from the cem may fail to reach the fuel pump electronic module (pem), inhibiting the fuel from reaching the engine even as the vehicle's throttle is depressed. normally, this would just result in an engine that fails to start. however, residual pressure in the system may allow the vehicles in question to drive a short distance before the engine quits... and if the vehicle stalls in certain conditions, a crash could occur.) i took my car to the local dealership and was told to replace the cem at a cost of $1200.00 and that they wanted me to know that they were not even sure this would fix my problem.

complaint centers on a 2004 volvo xc70. after a minimal amount of online research, i find that there are many owners with similar problems. recently, after driving vehicle past initial "warm-up" stage an electronic anomaly occurs at random intervals, at speeds ranging from 1 - 65 mph. the anomaly always involves a sudden "jolt" as if the transmission slipped, and is also characterized by various other electronic occurrences. these can include "left rear door open" light, all interior lights illuminating, driver's seat heater turning on, "srs airbag" urgent message, "brake failure" notification, and loss of all dashboard instrumentation including lights and turn signals. any one of these occurrences are an immediate attention-grabber while behind the wheel and create a situation detrimental to safe vehicle operation. this particular vehicle is now at an authorized volvo dealer for the second time (had to be towed the first time) for the same problem. dealership performed software update first visit which did not fix problem. now dealership thinks it may be central electronics module, a $1000+ fix, which may or may not correct the problem.

2004 volvo xc70: i was pulling out of my garage and immediately heard a grinding sound. i then heard a whooshing sound. the front passenger side spring coil cracked and punctured (and ruined) a four week old tire. there was no warning that this was going to happen. i was lucky that i wasn't on the highway because i would have had a sudden tire blowout. subaru had this problem with spring coils and had a recall to install shield to protect tire.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

my 2004 volvo xc70 died twice night and once during the day while driving at high speed on two crowded highways around new york city. the engine totally shut off, the lights went out and luckily i was going fast enough to roll over to the shoulder. this is a car i keep regularly maintained at a volvo dealer service center as well. someone made me aware of a volvo customer blog where several other people had the same problem.

SUSPENSION:FRONT

24 june 2011, got in to my 2004 volvo xc70, appx 90000 miles on german roads, to drive off to work in the morning. heard loud screeching noise near the right wheel well when i placed the car on drive to move forward. next thing you know, i have a severe air leak in the front right tire. just a day prior, the car was driven through the day without any symptoms of problem and parked in the drive way with no issues. when i pulled the tire off, i found the spring snapped in two pieces with sharp ends. good thing this did not happened on the autobahn. we could have had another american soldier or family on the front page of german and american newspapers and digital media.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

the car was going 60-63mph down the highway there was a sudden hard clunk in the transmission and my guage cluster went dead and lost all power options. was almost hit as i tried to pull over with no blinkers, flashers, etc. after about 10 minutes i tried to start the car again and the dash came back but srs warning was up on the info cluster. took my car to the repair shop (authorized volvo repair) and was told there were no codes present. they drove the car for a week and same thing happened to them. they suggested that the cem volvo part number 30657629 was no good. to replace it would be 1300$ after some research i found that there are a lot of other volvo owners who have had this same occurrence, and even been in accidents due to this failure at different intervals in mileage ranging from 50k and up. seems to me there should be a recall and some repairs made to the cem on the v70, xc70, s90, s40 etc as they all seem to do it. *tt

while driving on smooth surface- heard a sudden loud sound as if something large dropped on the road. car continued to drive normally except with a loud clunky sounds heard over bumps. less than 5-miles later, when i pulled over to the garage- i recovered a piece of the spring coil which dropped: the driver side coil spring had broken/failed instantaneously. this uncommon problem appears to be common with xc70 owners- and could result in potentially serious accidents.

SERVICE BRAKES

while backing out of a parking place, i felt a sensation of going over a bump. i stopped the car and examined around and under the car. no object or "bump" item was seen. i drove slowly and experienced metallic noises coming from the car. upon having the car checked by my regular garage, it was determined that the emergency brake had broken. i have had it replaced (very expensive) and the mechanic said he had never seen this type of emergency break damage before. other owners of this vehicle may be helped by this information.

while my car was parked inside my garage there was a sudden "bang". the following morning i discovered while backing out of garage that the driver side coil spring had broken. had i been driving while this happened it would have resulted in the shredding of the front driver side tire possibly resulting in a severe accident. the reason i own volvo is principally dye to it's reputation for safety. in fact, volvo uses the term safety in all it's advertising. this is a grave flaw and i ask nhtsa to investigate weather this is a common flaw in the 2004 volvo xc70 and other volvo's with this coil spring.
