the engine dies intermittently once every six months. this normally happens when making a right turn or slowing down. all of the warning lights in the dashboard light up. the gear must be put back in park, must turn off the ignition and then re-start again. the first time it happened, i thought it might have been a fluke, the second time i took it in they changed a valve in the engine, the third time they kept the car for 2 weeks and they changed the air compressor and positive/negative battery cables (they had a volvo of north america technician come down). the last time it happened was friday, august 19, 2005. i've called the dealership and they don't seem to want to take my call.

i was driving home at night when all of the gauges in my car went out completely. i had no speedometer, no gas reading, no engine heat meter, the message center was out, no turn signals. this is a 2 year old vehicle that was purchased brand new from volvo in 2004. i had to drive home 60 miles on an extreme;y dark road with no safety gauges- i couldn't call for roadside as i was alone and am a woman- i wasn't going to stop on the side of the road to wait for roadside. i was told by volvo that it was the ddm module and the wiring harness- my electrical /computer system went bad. how is that possible in a brand new car? furthermore, i was 1,000 miles over the manufacturer's warranty of 50,000 miles- thus volvo charged me $1,645.00. within in minutes of driving the car after it was repaired- the service engine light came on. i was told that my software had to be upgraded and my throttle cleaned? i believe that the electrical/computer systems in these cars are no good. *nm

car was serviced on 25-oct at ~49k miles. no computer updates were done to the vehicle. 12-dec, i had new tires put on the car. 13-dec the car reported "reduced engine performance" and oil light came on. pulled over, stopped car, waited a few minutes and restarted with no problem/lights. drove a few miles, same exact thing happened again. then drove for ~45 minutes when the car reported something like a "system engine failure" and the check engine light came on. car was sputtering with no response from the gas pedal. was towed to my dealership. sm informed me that the "main" computer had failed, "two other computers" had "stopped communicating" and the "throttle module" failed. he told me they could fix the car for ~$300 with computer upgrades. he didn't know if that would fix the throttle module as well. it was fixed in their opinion after they road tested it for ~7 miles. he said available computer upgrades are always applied at their dealership when the car is under warranty but never when the car is out of warranty unless there's a problem. was told my extended warranty did not cover the upgrades and was charged ~$300. i asked if the upgrades could have been applied 25-oct since i was under warranty. he felt that they could have been, assuming the upgrades were available then but couldn't tell me if they were. spoke with the sm at the dealership where i was on 25-oct and he said they never apply computer upgrades unless there's a problem with the car, warranty or not. drove the car home on 13-dec and noticed "electrical" issues. drove the car on the morning of 14-dec and a headlight went out and came back on later in the day. car failed again that day in traffic. filed a case with volvo customer care. *jb dealership has cleaned the throttle module but problem persists. they ordered a new etm at ~$800. i was told that they will use the $300 as a 25% payment on the parts/labor for the etm replacement and there will be no additional cost to me.

dear sir or madam, i bought the volvo s40 for its safety record. this one is a 2004 volvo s40. at that time, it had about 43k miles on it. now, it has 53k miles on it. on 23rd february 2009, the steering wheel completely froze up on the interstate making it very difficult to change lanes, etc. with great difficulty, we managed to bring it home. the next day, it was still frozen and we could not turn the steering wheel at all. i believe this may be a safety issue since i travel with my kids in this car. i want to bring this to your attention to see if: 1. volvo should be asked to recall and fix this problem if it pertains to all their cars. 2. a safety warning should be issued to alert the public. i have had the car towed to a repair shop and they don't seem to understand how or why it happened. i searched online but found very limited references to this type of problem. i am requesting you to kindly take the necessary action at your earliest convenience in order to prevent any untoward incident from occurring because of this problem.

i am writing to officially inform you of a problem that continues to need to be replaced on my 2004 s40. i have owed the car since 2006 and am about to bring it in for the forth (4) time to have the hydraulic brake valve pump and hoses replaced. only this time it is not under warranty because i have 65k miles on the car. so i have to pay for this unwillingly. the brakes lock and the car continues to slide. i have had one mini-fender bender due to this issue, but my insurance won't acknowledge that it was because of the car. since i have experienced this so many times, i know when the problem arises.

i live in texas. i own a volvo. 2004 s-40. apparently have been several recalls on volvo s-40's pertaining to the gasoline fuel pumps. these recalls only apply to certain states up north. i did speak to a customer service representative (bart) at volvo. i feel like i am involved in a cat an mouse game when i talk to him. he says my vin number is not involved in the recall. i told him it probably would not be involved in the recall since volvo has only involved states up north. that was the purpose of my call. how is it that auto company's are allowed to get away with these glitches? the recall involves fuel pumps exposure (corrosion)to salt (chemical) on the roads that are mostly exposed in northern states. i think this is irresponsible. what if the owner moves from texas up north to live? the person that moves from south to north still will never be aware of the recall notification because they bought the vehicle down south. what if the person is in a area of the state (other than up north) and the car is exposed to salty environment. i did not get anywhere with the representative because he was ?playing with words? literally trying to confuse me. my point is this the recalls should not be placed on were you live when it comes to climate. people move all the time. also sometimes they find that the problem has nothing to do with where people live it could be the overall problem with the car despite location. do people have to die before this is figured our. i feel volvo is being very deceptive by presenting this recall the way that it did. there are more than one recall pertaining to the fuel pump. there are several. also i just recently saw today on tv about toyota recalling tundra trucks under very similar circumstances as i described with volvo( climate exposure). the tundras were rusting and the wheels and gas tanks were falling off(apparently it was only in 20 cold states) now they expanded to 50 states. why?

on certain volvo vehicles, insufficient sealing of the fuel pump electronic module may lead to water ingress corrosion, possibly causing the unit to fail. this may result in increased, decreased, or loss of fuel pressure. engine stalling would result in lost propulsion which, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the driver's reactions, could increase the risk of a collision or serious physical injury. correction: dealers should replace and relocate the fuel pump electronic module. relocation of pem is due to a design flaw and should not be limited to geographical areas of vehicle use. this design flaw presents a manufacturing defect that may affect the safe operation of the vehicle. volvo extended the warranty but has not voluntarily recalled this component for the 2004 through 2007 volvos. by extending the warranty they are avoiding their responsibility to replace a design flaw that may endanger occupants of volvos. please refer to transport canada's mandate regarding motor vehicle safety act.

first occurrence about 87000 miles was traveling on freeway when car stalled. started it back up and check engine light came on. took vehicle to dealer and they installed new spark plug and wires. stalled again at about 89000 miles and was told to bring back when check engine light came back on. check engine light came on again and took vehicle in on saturday but store was remodeling and couldn't get me in. took car in for 90000 mile service and check engine light was on. was told that spark plugs were installed. i informed them i had spark plugs and wires installed the last service and that this stalling of my vehicle is dangerous. was told that after the spark plugs were installed it cleared the check engine light and that i would have to bring the car in again when the check engine light was on. dealership has been of no help with this issue. looked online for people with similar problems and it points to recall #08v033000. *js
