volkswagen touareg 2006 Complaints

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:MODULE

i have a 2006 vw touareg only a month old with 2,700 miles. i was not operating the vehicle at the time which was a good thing. i left work started my touareg and is shut off right away and would not start and the key was locked in the ignition. i had to be towed to my local dealer. it was in the shop for two weeks and there was a faulty control module. it was repaired but who knows how long it will last. from my research it appears this exact situation has occurred in the 2004 model year also which was their first year of production. it could have been deadly if this module fialed while driving because i would have had no control of the vehicle. it's terrible to see there has not been a correction since the 2004 model year to address this issue. the touareg has hand many problems since its release in 2004. *nm

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

the 2006 volkswagen touareg was having electrical problems. there have been several sensors, from the air bags to the gas cap, on the car that have been going off. what was worst was that the car has been in the service shop every other week this past month. there was a hesitation when accelerating. the manufacturer has been told of this along with the dealership, but the manufacturer stated that the car was running in order of operation. the dealership stated that they were very aware of this concern ,and that it was a software problem that they could not fix. the sensors went off while i driving, and when pulling over to check it. everything seemed to be good. i have to turn the car off and restart it, and then it resets itself. the light sensors have gone off and both lights have gone out, one at a time. the dealership couldn't find anything wrong with it. the parking brake would be released, and it will still show that it was on. *ak

STRUCTURE

i have a brand new volkswagen touareg and the seat, steering wheel and dash instruments are totally misaligned and it is causing back and shoulder pain. i have tried everything to work out with volkswagen and they basically told me to take a hike. vw service manager of 21 years told me i am not the only one that has complained and that he thought a case recently went to arbitration. this is my 2nd v-10 twin turbo diesel that i have had in 5 moths because my first one turned out to be a lemon and i cant tell you how difficult vw was to try and get a new car... i am concerned about my health and the others that may be experiencing the same thing and there is a safety problem. while driving, i am always leaning 2 inches to the left and if i was to get into and accident, i know the airbags are not designed for people leaning over but for those that are sitting up straight... vw knows that all the touaregs are like this and i have even had sales people from other dealers tell me they have heard some complaints but once again vw will do nothing... this is a $70,000 dollar car and i can hardly drive it. i am forced to right now because i sole my other car to get this one but i don't know how long i can continue. i spend 3 hours a day in my car and my back and shoulder is tweaked. i have had 5 people get in my car and they notice it right away. the steering wheel is off center to the left by over an inch and when you drive to and from work, your miserable. help please, vw told me to beat it! *jb

constant squeaking brakes when i came off of the brakes, not pushing down this occurred for several weeks. i took in to dealer, was initially told no problem existed it was brake dust, and may need more expensive pads. i took it back about 1 month later (sept 2007) at my 20k mile check and was told i needed whole new front brakes.

tl*the contact owns a 2006 volkswagen touareg. the contact attempted to start the vehicle and the engine warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. he turned off the vehicle, restarted it, and drove for approximately 4-5 miles when the light illuminated again. while driving 50 mph, the vehicle made a loud sound, jerked forward, and came to a complete stop. he was able to pull off the road, and after six attempts, was able to restart the vehicle. he drove 15 mph on the shoulder until he reached the exit. he called the dealer and the manufacturer and they both stated that his vehicle was no longer under warranty. he was advised to call roadside assistance. roadside assistance informed him that because the vehicle had an electronic shifter, they could not assist. the vehicle has not been repaired. the engine runs, but does not shift into gear. the current and failure mileages were 65,500.

squealing noise after i stop and begin to accelerate or when i drive slow. dealer says touaregs are rough on brakes. it has about 42,000 miles on it. he suggests i live with the squealing noise for a year or two until the brakes really go. or they can replace them now - $700+. ugh. just bought the car 60 days ago.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION

i am an automobile insurance adjuster. a 2006 vw touareg belonging to one of my customers caught fire at his work. he had taken the car to lunch, then back to work. 30 minutes after his return to work, the engine caught fire. the fire department put it out. both a volkswagen representative and a forensics engineer hired by the insurance company have inspected the damage. the preliminary finding is a faulty ignition coil. it appears vw is going to 'total' this customer's car under warranty, and pay for its replacement. this complaint is only to alert nhtsa that the ignition coil may be a known issue affecting additional vw vehicles.

POWER TRAIN:DRIVELINE

i own a 2006 vw touareg. it has only 54k miles and has never been driven off road. it has been a family car and bought new in 2006. just yesterday sept 2009 i left a parking lot and began accelerating when it sounded like and felt like the car lost the front two tires. i quickly pulled over thinking i would see blown tires but saw nothing. got back in drove a 100 feet to have the same noise and shaking. i pulled over and had it towed to nearest vw shop. found out the drive shaft was shot. $1100 for the part and only $65 to install new drive shaft. mechanic thought it was interesting that the local vw dealer happen to have one in stock. he thought it meant they must be having this problem with a lot of touaregs. i am going to call vw in hopes that they will take some responsibility. is this not an off road vehicle? they sure market it as one. i can't imagine what would be broke and how quickly it would have broke if i did drive it off road. i have noticed some cheap aspects of the interior of the car as buttons have faded due to touching them for use. i have had a few issues with tire pressure sensors as well but have been fixed by dealer. i frequently have the lights on the car needing to be replaced almost like a small electrical issue. check light warning light comes on often. my biggest concern is that this was a 40k dollar car and looks nice but seems a bit cheap for what we paid for it. it has taken a few years of driving it to come to this conclusion but it is disappointing. i like vw and have owned many over the years. i hope they will stand behind these issues.

POWER TRAIN

i noticed a small vibration coming from the bottom around the middle of the vehicle. when i took it to a mechanic i was told that the hanger bearing and that the hanger bearing is not an available part hat the entire driveshaft needs to be replaced for $1,400.! the car is only two weeks out of warranty with only 51,000 miles so i took it to volkswagen. volkswagen said that they will not fix it under warranty because i am two weeks out but, if i had been a loyal customer, meaning if i had all my service done by vw they would have covered it! really! so in other words they don't stand by there product unless you get your oil changed by them! anyway after doing extensive research on this problem on volkswagen forums it seems that this problem is very common on the vehicles and it happens at low mileage. i also found out that the part is available to replace and that the entire driveshaft does not need to be replaced! what kind of company does not stand by there product, especially since it seems to be common.

SEAT BELTS

rear center seat belt retractor assembly pre-locks when the rear seat is placed in the extended cargo position. this defect prohibits the use of right outboard seating position as well as the center seating position since the seat back cannot be returned to the use position. i have informed the dealership many times over the last several years in attempts to resolve this shortcoming. dealership has been unable to correct the root cause of the problem. the vehicle is now out of warranty and vw now wants me to pay for the the repair (labor) with no garantee that this action will resolve the defect. as a result, i have disconnected the rear center seat belt assembly at the anchor near the floor to allow proper operation of the seat back and the right outboard seating position. this is a safety related issue that should be addressed since a safety device was defective when the vehicle was delivered.

in order to flip backseats down to give rear more cargo space the front seats must be moved forward. however when front seats are slid forward more then a few inches the wires for the airbag sensors under the seats are torn and ripped out of place since the harness is to short. this in turn disables the airbags. vw is aware of this issue and makes customers buy a new wiring harness that is long enough to move seats forward with out tearing to repair the issue.

ENGINE

upon driving the vehicle on the night in question, out of nowhere, a light came on and said coolant overheated. i was driving on the dallas tollway, and pulled over immediately, and the vehicle shut down completely. i called a tow truck, and had the vehicle towed, and was told maybe the battery was bad. i purchased a new battery the next day, but the vehicle still would not start. i then had it towed to the dealer, and was told that i needed a new engine. i couldn't understand how an engine could go out at less than 60,000 miles. i've been fighting with vw to have the problem resolved, but they have refused to do so. they've had my vehicle for 2 months now, and the problem still hasn't been resolved. i plan to pursue litigation.

POWER TRAIN

while traveling at highway speed, began to hear a thunking noise consistent with a flat tire. after further inspection determined the noise was originating from the underside of the vehicle in the center. dealer was able to diagnose as a failed carrier bearing over the phone as it is a "recurring issue" (dealer's words). since this was only a "recurring issue and not a problem", volkswagen stuck me with a $1483 repair bill and a week without a car or loaner vehicle.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

the outside rear of the car smelled like gas. after looking under the car we noticed a puddle of gas collecting after stopping the vehicle. the dealer told us the driver side fuel pump has a crack leaking fuel. this is a serious problem and has to be addressed before somene dies. it is a hazard to my family and the public as a whole. apparently vw has done a recall for this for later model year touareg, but not the 2006. they refuse to fix it due to age?! in all the years i've been driving, i've never had a fuel pump that cracks and spews gas all over the road. in order to even find the problem, they had to take out all of the rear seats, cut through the carpet of the vehicle, and open up two vents through the floor of the suv. this is a serious hazard. so if i hadn't smelled the gas and someone threw a cigarette, my family would be in hazard for their life?! even though there are many other examples of this on the internet vw has refused to acknowledge this is an issue.
