Defect Description:
SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC
Potential Consequences:
ELECTRICAL BRAKES ON TRAVEL TRAILER FAILED WHILE ON HIGHWAY. TROUBLESHOOTING REVEALED THAT THE ELECTRICAL WIRES LEADING FROM THE MAIN BRAKE SHEATHED CABLE TO THE AXLES HAD BEEN LOOPED BACK THROUGH THE METAL SUPPORT BRACKET WITHOUT ANY PROTECTIVE SHEATHING. THE NORMAL DRIVING VIBRATION CAUSED BETWEEN THE WIRE AND BRACKET EVENTUALLY WEARING THROUGH CAUSING A SHORT CIRCUIT TO GROUND AND COMPLETE TRAILER BRAKE FAILURE.*DT THE BRACKET WHERE THE SHORT CIRCUIT OCCURRED IS ON THE LEFT BOTTOM SIDE OF THE TRAILER JUST INSIDE THE MIDDLE OF THE TANDEM AXLES. THE LARGE RED CABLE YOU SEE IN THE PICTURES IS THE TWIN SHEATHED CABLE FROM THE FRONT OF THE TRAILER THAT CARRIES THE BRAKE ACTIVATING CURRENT BACK TO THE BRACKET WHERE THE CABLE IS BROKEN OUT CONNECT TO MULTIPLE PAIRS OF WIRE GOING TO THE INDIVIDUAL BRAKE MECHANISMS IN THE SEPARATE WHEELS. IT IS ONE OF THESE WIRES (SHOWN BY FINGER INDICATION) THAT HAD ITS INSULATION RUBBED OFF WHERE IT LOOPED BACK THROUGH THE BRACKET.
