Defect Description:
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Potential Consequences:
Started getting messages that trailer brake gain was not recalled on the dash display. The NAV display continued to show no connection errors. The problem escalated to a turn signal failure. The left turn signal flashed and sounded an alarm when changing lanes. The nav display did indicate a turn signal connection error. I tried moving the 7 pin trailer cable to another connector and the brake gain warnings continued. My tow vehicle is a GMC Sierra 3500HD Denali. I remembered seeing this issue on an RV forum and the fix is spraying contact cleaner into the 7 pin plug. The contact cleaner did stop the warning messages. The Denali is equipped with a trailer package. The package includes a lamp test. The lamp test cycles the trailer brake and turn signals. We always perform the lamp test before traveling with the trailer and it has always passed. The turn signal failure did not cause an accident. My concern is that the cable and plug is a component common to other RV manufacturers. An electrical failure of the brakes or turn signals could result in a serious accident. Does the 7 pin plug require a design change to eliminate corrosion issues?
