STRUCTURE

dt*: the contact stated there are numerous rust spots located on the lift gate and front passenger side door frame. the dealership and manufacturer have been alerted and denied the problem. they explained this is a paint defect. updated 6/30/2006 - the consumer believes that the rust may have developed as a result of weld splatter. the rust appeared at the junction between the door frame and opposing rubber door seal. *nm

i own a 2006 scion xb and i believe there is something wrong with the structure of the vehicle. i had to replace the windshield of the car after a 6 inch crack appeared in it instantly and then developed into a 12 inch crack by the next morning. i took it to the dealership because there was no sign of trauma that would cause a crack and the guy took a pen and ran it up the crack and said there was a chip that caused this crack. the "chip" in no way should have caused this damage seeing as the car was in the dealership on friday and they did not detect any flaws in the glass and for this "chip" to have happened within the next two days and lead to a crack is unheard of as i have experienced chips in other windshields and they lead to no such damage in such a short time. *nm

i have a new 2006 scion xb purchased in september 2006. first cracked windshield occurred on 11/09/06; at 7am , temperature 65-68 degrees, i turned on the heat-low- to get fog off the windshield, took out the thrash and came back to the car and found a nine inch crack from left side under rubber bending toward the right into my line of sight. no objects have hit my windshield and dealer could find no impact point. toyota replaced windshield under warranty. today, 12/20/06, i turned on the heat-specifically kept it low-to clear fog again (70 degrees outside). drove 0.2 mile and noticed a new crack coming from under the rubber at the top center near the rear view mirror. nothing has hit this second windshield. found many internet blogs about scion xb windshields cracking while they just sit in peoples' garage. this appears to be a design flaw. i request a recall on this flimsy windshield. please tell me what can be done about this. i am sure another windshield will not fix the real problem--this is a safety hazard and getting the repair causes me to lose work time. *nm

purchased car in september 2006 in north hollywood. sitting at gas station early morning near mt shasta (north california, temperature just above freezing) with heater running. while pumping gas heard a cracking noise, came around to front of car and found crack running horizontally from lower driver side of windshield. within two hours crack had grown almost seven inches, curving up first then running horizontally towards the passenger side. the next morning (again very cold temperatures) the crack had grown almost a full foot further. by the time i got the car to the dealership the "service manager" ran a pen along the crack and declared that a grain of sand had struck the windshield and that the dealership refused to cover the repair. i contacted toyota, they said that they would defer to the dealerships "experts," even though i pointed out the many, many postings on this fault on this website. there is definitely a recallable fault if a grain of sand traveling at freeway velocities can cause a failure of the windshield; were that explanation true no toyota could safely be on the road. the fact that i was at a dead stop when the "impact" happened makes it even more ridiculous. *jb

windshield cracks: my windshield cracked, with no one in the car, and no chip. it had less than 2000 miles when it happened. i had parked the car most of the way under a carport, where the front 2/3 was shaded as the sun rose that morning but the back 1/3 had sun shining on it. i had the front windows down a couple of inches each. the crack came from the passenger side at the seal about half way up the window, and traveled in toward the driver's side horizontally then took a turn 90 degrees upward for a couple of inches and then 90 degrees toward the driver's side again. total length was approx 14 inches. i immediately called the dealer and asked if anyone else had this same issue. mind you i bought the car from kerry scion in florence, ky. where they claim the car sells itself and they can't keep them in stock- no one seemed to have reported a similar incident. the service tech laughed at me over the phone! i took a ballpoint pen like he told me and followed the crack and no chip! this was in august 2006. over the course of one year the crack grew to almost the entire width of the windshield. then just last week, a new crack appeared originating at the top edge of the windshield, on the drivers side of the review mirror, traveling downward then making a 90 degree turn toward the passenger side. the same day the second crack appeared, which occurred as the car was parked(same as the first crack) in the lot at work, the original crack grew approx 6 inches toward the drivers side. this is why i replaced the windshield today: i was told while registering my vehicle this past week that the state i now live in, ks, will ticket you for a crack in the windshield if in front of the drivers line of sight. so if it is safety concern for the state of kansas, then it's a safety issue that toyota need to address.

i own a 2006 scion xb. there seems to be a manufacturer's flaw on the windshield design. less than 8 months there was a crack on the front windshield for no apparent reason. i then had to replaced it with a brand new front windshield. about a week later a new crack appeared, there was no rocks that had hit the front windshield. it just slowly started to crack from the driver's edge frame and slowing increased in length. to replace the windshield twice in 8 months was not regular. i searched online forums around, and it seemed like i was not the only one complaining about the toyota scion windshield defects. i think scion should be held responsible for all the cracked windshields that occrured with their defective design. there should be a recall to fix this problem. *ak

i just replaced my windshield on my 2006 scion xb on 11/30/07 after 2 cracks developed after only tiny pebbles from the road hit in 2 different spots on 2 different occasions and created a cracks that spread like wildfire. this obviously made it impossible for repair because even if the glass company came within a couple hours, the crack had already spread from maybe 3-4 inches to over 12 inches! on both occasions the impact points were no more than 1 inch from the molding edge in the black area of the glass. any other time that i have had anything hit in the middle/in my line of view, it just bounces off like a piece of rubber with no damage. all in all, it has only been about 2 1/2 weeks since i paid about $250 out of my own pocket to have the thing replaced, and i already have another crack!!! same as the last couple of times... a very small pebble/rock hit about an inch from the molding in the "black area" of the glass on my way in to work this morning (12/18/07). and within my hour commute to work, it had already spread to about 3-4 inches. that was at about 8:00 this morning. it is now 10:20am, and when i went outside to look at it again at 9:30am, it had already spread to about 12 inches!!! i guess they won't be able to repair it!!! if it's longer than a dollar bill, they can't fix it according to my glass company that i usually call. this is obviously a design flaw and i would like to see toyota correct this problem. i have seen many many many complaints regarding this particular issue throughout the internet and a very considerable amount of complaints with the nhtsa/odi. this is a violation of the lemon law and have no problem giving it back to them for a full refund of all payments i have made to date since my purchase back in aug 2006 or a new vehicle under my current financing option.

i bought my 2006 scion xb brand new in december of 2006. i've only owned my car for 1 year, but i've had 4 windshield cracks/chips. the first occurred the 2nd week of having my car. a rock hit the windshield in the middle and caused a chip, i immediately had novus stop it before it turned into a bigger problem. i had no problems through the summer and lived with a chip windshield. then a couple of months ago another rock hit the edge of my windshield (where the frame of the car is behind the glass) and the crack immediately spread to being about 12 inches long. i placed a claim with my insurance company and had the windshield replaced with toyota manufactured glass about a week later. a couple of weeks ago, my windshield cracked again, with no cause or rock damage noticed. the crack grew quickly and is about 15 inches long. i called the insurance company and the people who replaced my windshield. i also did a bit of research and found out that the windshield is apparently cursed because owners everywhere are having the same problem. and now i have a second 15 inch crack on the same windshield. i'm waiting for the original toyota manufactured glass to come in (so that toyota is still responsible when i have to replace it a third time) and then i'll have it replaced. 4 cracks in less than a year... seems like there could be a serious problem with this windshield.

jan 24 2006 i was driving to work (around 45 mph) in my 2006 toyota scion and my windshield started to crack. i pulled over to see if it was cracking because of some type of impact (say a rock), or just looking to see what was happening. and at the time i did not see anything but the 6-7 inch cracking of my windshield. i came to work and asked other people to look and they did not see any type of debris damage. i called the toyota dealer were i purchased it...and then told me to bring it in. jan 25 2006 i took my toyota in, and they informed me that the crack (and continuously cracking still today) was caused by impact of a stone (or something) and my warranty would not cover it. i explained that there was no way the windshield should crack like that, and if it was not a stress crack--then the windshield is defective. [i mean were the safety--what if i as in an accident]. they sent me on my way and recommended that i get it fixed. i asked if it was safe to drive and they told me yes. so i came to work. i was looking online...only to discover that i am not alone...that this seems to be a problem with a lot of 2006 toyota scions...and i found this web site.

i bought my 2006 scion xb new. sitting in my driveway one morning i got in and closed the door. my windshield cracked. i had not started the car yet, just closed the door, and not hard. my car was parked on a slope, perhaps 6 degrees. the crack was on the lower driver's side corner about 5 inches from the bottom and only a few inches long. over the next few weeks it grew and turned down connecting with the bottom edge. now the same windshield has sprouted another crack. i just returned from the dealership, kearny mesa toyota (92111) where they told me there was nothing they could do, that the glass was impacted by rocks. the manager came out with his ballpoint pen and traced the crack. when he found no impact crater he made a chip by running his pen crosswise to the crack, which made a small star chip that looks like a impact mark. he told me this is not under warranty and that it would cost me 700 to 900 to fix my car. i am still driving with a broken windshield.

i purchased a 2006 scion xb in march of 2006. i did not drive it much as a student but now that i've graduated i see major problems in the vehicle design. i had one pebble hit the top part of my windshield in dec 2007 and it caused a vertical vein down the driver side of my window. i have since replaced the window and now, two months after, my windshield has again veined as a result of a pebble hitting the edge of the windshield. all of this occurred on a daily commute on the highway. since i actually had two different brands of windshield i can only conclude that this is not a windshield problem, but rather a design defect. the shape of the vehicle leaves the windshields susceptible to cracks more than other vehicles. for a vehicle that is supposed to be economical i feel that paying over 300 dollars every couple months for a new windshield is completely unacceptable and toyota should be held responsible.

2006 scion xb, found windshield cracked after leaving the car parked. the crack was not there in the morning but in the afternoon, an l shaped, 4" by 10" crack starting from behind rear view mirror appeared, the car has 7700 miles this is a "weekend car" as it is parked in the garage in most of the time. showed the crack to local scion dealer and they claim it was due to an impact from a pebble. they used a ball point to demonstrate that there is a pit. i am planning to replace the glass soon.

i purchased my scion xb 2006 in august of 2006. last week, wed. july 9, 2008, an l shaped crack appeared on my front windshield. it appeared overnight out of nowhere. i discovered it in the morning. there are no signs of trauma to the windshield. the crack starts at the very top edge of the windshield and goes in an l shape. the next morning (thur, july 10) a second l-shaped crack appeared in my windshield in the same fashion. this one is on the lower left side and also starts at the very edge of the windshield. again, there was no trauma to the windshield and the crack appeared out of nowhere. the two cracks are now heading toward each other, and i am worried this defective windshield will crack. after researching this issue online and talking to mechanics, i have found out that this is a common defect in the scion xb 2006 model. many owners have reported l-shaped cracks appearing out of nowhere and filed complaints. the mechanic i spoke with said that he has replaced many cracked windshields on scion xb's. he attributes what he termed this design defect to the fact that the car sits so low and the steep grade of the windshield. i know you have received numerous other complaints about this problem, and i urge you to take action.

this is my second complaint around this issue. my 2006 scion xb has a cracked windshield. this is the second time! my research indicates this is an unusually common problem in this model and i note that this will be the 89th complaint of this type on this site. i have traveled hundreds of thousands of miles in my life and my windshield has been hit by rocks on many occasions. not once have those strikes resulted in a fatally cracked windshield until my scion. a small nick will almost invariably end up in major crack. i was told by the dealership that this is because of how the windshield is sloped. i believe it is a cheap piece of glass or a design flaw of some kind. at $500 a windshield it is becoming an expensive proposition to own this vehicle.

STRUCTURE:BODY

the rear hatch handle on my 06 scion xb has broken off on the right side and now just hangs there. i can hardly ever get into my trunk because of this. i am worried that it will come off completely as i am driving down the road and become a dangerous hazard for another driver. also the rear latch button rubber cover becomes so hot that it begins to melt. when you push the button it will leave black reidue on your hands. this prevents the button from working and unlatching the back hatch. not sure if it is melting due to electrical problems or the sun. worried could get to hot and catch fire sometime.

on 4 separate incidents, my car accelerated on it's own while sitting still. the last incident was on march 23rd while i was sitting still in a mcdonald's drive thru. my foot was on the brake and the car suddenly acted as if i had stepped fully down on the gas pedal. i had to really push my foot down on the brake to keep it from lunging forward. i immediately pushed it into park and the car stopped accelerating. this is very dangerous and i am extremely worried it will happen again!

hello to whom it may concern: this has happened twice first time it was fixed they (dealer) never explained just what they fixed, second it happened again both times it broke upon opening they(dealer) the second time wanted 285 bucks to repair it appears to be just simple clips that broke? this is clearly safety related for emergency exit if locks fail or airbags fail to deploy or even if the bags deploy the electrical component(s) may have a system failure and exiting out through the rear or even doing an emergency evac if there is a engine fire opening from the outside is more than likely not possible even if it's possible how about break ins? i have a question any mandates for repairs at dealer cost of the rear door latch handle and lock?

Reported in: GARNER NC || Crash: N || VIN #: JTLKT324564

STRUCTURE:BODY

the vehicles rear hatch handle has a design flaw which makes the part fail. the rear hatch handle is fastened to the trunk/hatch with plastic clips. when the release button for the hatch is pressed, it only unlocks the hatch door. it does not spring upward like other vehicles. in the manual it shows to hold the release button and lift with the hatch handle. because there are no springs to help lift it applies lots of pressure to the clips which weaken them. eventually, they just snap. they are also known for snapping when the hatch is locked, in cold weather, and there are even reports of the release button melting. another problem develops when the hatch handle is completely removed after failing. there are holes for the clips which are left open if this piece is not attached. these holes can allow exhaust and other emissions into the vehicle. lastly, there is a possibility of becoming trapped in the vehicle. if there were an accident that left the side doors inoperable and the person(s) in the vehicle were able to exit safely through the hatch, they are unable to do so. this vehicle is not equipped with any type of manual release (which is not required by law). however, rescuers cannot open the hatch from the outside either. this is because when this defective part breaks off, it leaves the dangling release button. consumers are capping the wires so it doesn't rip off while driving. there is now no way to exit the vehicle.

i noticed a few weeks ago that when i tried to open the lift gate, that my fingers were covered in a black mushy substance. the switch to open the door was completely melted and would barely open. my wife and i don't usually use the hatch door, so i don't know how long its been in this condition . we have been very happy with the scion up to this point.i found out that many others are having this same problem and feel totally disappointed in toyota's product. i'm seriously planning on taking this flaw to the media since the door may not even open in an emergency. the others have told me that it is no longer covered by warranty, and toyota refuses to fix the problem. the dealership wants over $200.00 to fix it. i feel it is a flaw that toyota should repair and not me. the part was probably made in china and is junk.the car has always been kept in the carport and never abused.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

i have a toyota 2006 scion xb that i purchased new and am extremely fond of it. in march of 2014, the ignition switch started suspiciously loosening up, moving around when the key was inserted into the ignition and progressed in loosening up to the point where the ignition key was able to be completely pulled out/removed after inserted into the ignition to turn the car on and run the engine. the shockingly dangerous thing was that the engine could continue to run and could be driven. it was a huge safety issue due to engine being at risk of shutting off, losing the ability to steer or engage the brakes and being out of control of the vehicle one is driving. i contacted the toyota dealership and had my scion xb assessed and repaired to the tune of $463.00 at the toyota dealership. the toyota dealership reported no recalls were issued for this malfunction. i know that gm had a big, intentionally delayed recall, related to this ignition/ignition switch malfunction of some of their vehicles which led to a number of accidents with some deaths resulting. this was reportedly due to accidents where the car is being driven, the ignition/ignition switch malfunctions and the engine stops running. i would like toyota and other scion owners to know that this has occurred and could be potentially lethal.
