when driving my brand new fj cruiser it stalled and lost all power. i was forced to call a tow truck because it was on a secluded highway in the middle of the night. after getting it towed to a dealership they still have the vehicle and have diagnosed it as the fuel pump assembly and they are waiting for parts to be delivered. the vehicle was bought in 6/2006 and has less than 5000 miles on it. i was not given a replacement vehicle and was told i should have taken it to the dealership i bought it from in san jose, ca. after threatening not to pay for the tow-the tow truck company went to the dealership and demanded payment-it was issued on 8/14/06. *nm

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:COOLING SYSTEM

2007 toyota fj cruiser was driven on edge of terra cotta pipe while pulling into a drive way and got stuck. after being pulled out, vehicle sat over night. vehicle was driven the next day. while driving about 10 miles, vehicle engine started making noise and check engine light came on. owner of vehicle called a mechanic who found that the frame had been twisted and the radiator was busted which caused $15,500 worth of body and engine damage. insurance and manufacturer's warranty refused to cover engine damage. vehicle is advertised as extremely durable 4x4 with pictures on website demonstrating vehicle being driven in all types of terrain such as mountains and rivers. vehicle has no cover protecting bottom front of radiator and crossmember is not very durable. vehicle also does not have a low coolant detection system in case of coolant loss. coolant temperature gauge does not register engine overheating in cases of coolant loss so owner had no idea engine was being damaged. diagnostic trouble code p0300 engine misfire was only code stored in pcm memory. pcm did not detect overheating condition. please help as manufacturer will not honor vehicle's warranty with only 15,000 miles on vehicle.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM

my vehicle has an issue with failing to quickly return to idle speed when i let off the throttle or shift gears. it does this consistently and repeatedly. the other day it almost caused a major accident during inclement weather. when i let off the throttle, the rpms will continue at a relatively high rpm or actually climb. then abruptly the throttle will "stair step" down. in the situation where it became very dangerous. i am cruising along about 40-45 mph in a different area. i pop over a little rise and all i see are tail lights and cars spinning and sliding everywhere. i ease off the throttle and like usual, nothing happens immediately. precious feet are chewed before the truck even begins to slow. instead of slowing down gracefully, the rpm hang actually acts almost like a cruise control. as i just start to depress the brake to actually slow the vehicle, the ecu finally decides to chop the throttle. by chop i mean abruptly cut off fuel to the motor. at this point i am nothing but glare ice, going down hill on an off camber turn. so instead of a gradual reduction and smooth shift of weight, the chopped throttle allows the tail to now slide out to the right quite a bit. i donÂ??t dare touch the throttle to try and finesse it a bit since it doesn't listen to what i want to do. the non-linear throttle response put me in a situation that i almost didn't recover from. it was almost as though in the middle of the turn, i jammed on the rear parking brake to slide the rear around. this was the effect because i was going down hill and turning so the rear wheels were un-weighted and more likely to slide at this point. by slowly letting off the throttle i was trying to not induce any abrupt weight transfer to the front. i had the right idea, the ecu didn't! this was just plain incredibly dangerous how the ecu is programmed! *jb

tl*- the contact owns a 2007 toyota fj cruiser. when the temperature was below 20 degrees the clutch had a delayed response. the clutch didn't come out when released, jerking the vehicle to the side. the contact took the vehicle to the dealership, and they found nothing wrong with the vehicle, but they called toyota, who stated that there was a known failure that they were currently working with a technical service bulletin. the current and failure mileage were 450.*ak

i own a 2007 toyota fj cruiser. i frequent a forum called fjcruiserforums.com. we have tons of problems with windshields on the fj cruiser. cracks are a common occurrence with these windshields. i owned a jeep wrangler for 4 years. i had one time that i received a crack to the windshield. so, the angle of the window on the fj is not the problem. it must be a cheaper grade of glass. a lot of people on the website listed above have had to replace their window several times. i fortunately only had one crack as of yet. but, i am sure there will be more. the cracks develop into a splintering effect which requires the windshield to be replaced. so, insurance pays and premiums increase over cheap glass. *ak

i have a major issue with the windshield glass on the 2007 toyota fj cruiser. i have had my vehicle since november and already i have a crack clear across my windshield, 4 chips and pits everywhere. the way toyota designed the glass to the design of the vehicle leaves you vulnerable. it's a serious design flaw, because your windshield is almost at a 90 degree angle to the roadway and any tiny stone will create a bad situation. to add to the problem the glass appears to be extremely too thin. i have never had this type of problem with any other vehicle. toyota needs to be held accountable for this flaw, not the consumer. especially since a replacement windshield costs a mere $1500.00 dollars a pop. please help!

2007 toyota fj cruiser. large crack in middle of the windshield from a rock. other cracks arise from just small tiny debris striking the windshield. glass needs to be scratch and dent resistant. replacement windshields costs around 1400 dollars. this is because the installation involves removing a top molding piece that breaks easily and the unique cut of the glass. if you replace the windshield, the insurance company could refuse to insure you after multiple incidents like this blatant defect. it's a safety issue of getting the cracks fixed , compromises windshield integrity. also once you replace the windshield it is replaced with factory oem glass. which can crack again! this is just from city driving not even long distance driving! *jb

i have had my fj since april 23, 2006. the windshield issue took a little bit longer to cross my path than it seems others. i was riding along the expressway when i heard a small size pebble hit the windshield. didn't think that much of it because it wasn't very loud. well i was mistaken. less than 2 hours later it had spread to a crack of 6 inches. i couldn't even get it repaired. than i looked at the forum and saw all the other complaints. i don't want to replace because i feel there should be recall or subsequent reimbursement. i did hear of a company called clearplex where they can strengthen the windshield by adding a clear thing plastic protective coating. don't get me wrong i love my fj, but this is not right. they did the right thing with the tire recall and that was probably 750 per car, replacing all 5 tires plus labor. i trust they will do the right thing.

my story is this: at about 3000 miles i was driving home and about halfway there (we live about 5 miles out of town), i took a rock chip. i promptly turned right around, went back to town, while the glass shop was still open, and had the chip repaired. i parked it in the garage and that very night it cracked about 8". it was in the fall as i remember, so it was not a particular hot nor cold day or night. it seemed to me at the time (and still does) that the windshield may actually be "stressed" somehow, putting additional pressure on it, in ways it was not designed to be. at present, the crack is holding steady (i fixed that too). *jb

2007 fj cruiser. during normal driving i got a pea sized ding on the windshield approximately 4 months ago. april 25th got a crack which is still traveling toward the passenger a pillar. may 15th got a quarter sized star. all resulting from small (i mean small, really small) projectiles. glad i did not replace the windshield 4 months ago, otherwise i would have had to replace it two more times. this windshield is a disaster. i owned 6 cars over 27 years and had one busted windshield from a 3" piece of concrete. i own my fj for 11 months and have three places where the windshield is damaged from incidents that should not have damaged it as much as they did. toyota designed an upright windshield (a design i love), presumably understands the laws of physics (which i don't), and did nothing to mitigate the design in order to make the fj windshield last the way a more steeply windshield made from the same material would last. this is an off road vehicle for crying out loud! what were they thinking - that pebbles will magically avoid the fj windshield because the fj is so good looking? i plan on replacing the windshield with a ppg product. toyota does not deserve the business in my judgment.

to whom it may concern, i am the owner of a toyota fj cruiser 2007. after ~3500 miles, i discovered cracks in the body frame (front inner fender rails - engine bay). i did address this issue to toyota, who voided the warranty on the vehicle due to "signs of impact, namely scratches on the under body". i do not concur with this statement, since scratches can not be related to impact strength. i use this vehicle for off road, which does yield to scratches in the body. i have never experienced any impact. internet research on fj cruiser forums shows that this becomes a very common phenomenon and appears to be a design flaw in the front end of the fj cruiser. i am concerned that due to the cracks in the body (crash zone), the safety of the vehicle is negatively affected. i would be able to provide you a very detailed report on the findings, as well as with the links to a number of fj cruiser owners facing the same problem. i'm looking forward to your response and appreciate your support in this matter! *jb

(2) about three weeks later, the valve stem (where you put air in the tire) completely blew out of the front right tire and my tire went completely flat. thank god that i was parked and not driving, so again, no damage done to the vehicle. as of now, nothing has been done to correct this problem. i am currently trying to get toyota (dealership put on these particular tires before i bought this new tire, not a request from me) or pro comp to replace all of my wheels and tires with a safer brand than pro comp.

(1) i only had just under 12,500 mi. on my 2007 toyota fj cruiser when the vehicle started swerving as i was driving ~55 mph down the hwy. i pulled over to find that my 33" pro comp mud terrain rear right tire had a blow-out. not a minor blow-out, but the entire side wall completely peeled away from itself around the whole tire. pro comp offered to reimburse me a pro-rated amount of retail price for the tire according to the tread depth left on the tire. no damage was done to the vehicle. (2) about three weeks later, the valve stem (where you put air in the tire) completely blew out of the front right tire and my tire went completely flat. thank god that i was parked and not driving, so again, no damage done to the vehicle. as of now, nothing has been done to correct this problem. i am currently trying to get toyota (dealership put on these particular tires before i bought this new tire, not a request from me) or pro comp to replace all of my wheels and tires with a safer brand than pro comp.

within 6 months after purchasing my voodoo blue 2007 fj cruiser, i began noticing random paint chipping on the body of my vehicle. i have never put my car through a car wash, nor has it ever been off-roaded. i brought this to the attention of my sales rep at the toyota dealership where i purchased it and he proceeded to ask me if i had ever driven through any construction sites, which i had not. he then referred me to a toyota paint specialist who then proceeded to tell me that this is very common because lead is no longer an ingredient in the paint, which is causing it to become very brittle. since i am leasing the car i was concerned that i would be charged at lease termination for this but was assured by the specialist that this was considered "normal wear and tear" on the car. he suggested that i purchase touch-up paint and apply as needed. however, it has now been well over a year and the paint not only continues to chip further, but i've begun to notice a few small areas where there is also corrosion developing. at this point i plan to bring the truck back in to get something in writing concerning this problem and liability. i do not want to get screwed at the end of my lease term. i have never heard of paint chipping in this way, especially not on a new vehicle. i even purchased a 2007 prius recently and have had no issues whatsoever with the paint on that vehicle and it is driven under the same conditions as the fj - city and highway only.

i own a 2007 toyota fj cruiser sport utility vehicle. i've owned the vehicle for 24 months and currently have 16,000 miles driven. the safety problem is the design of the fj cruiser windshield. i have now replaced the windshield six (6) times due to small rocks hitting the windshield. the safety issue is that the vertical position of this windshield absorbs the full impact of any road debris as opposed to deflecting. of the six windshield incidents, 2 of those have been severe enough to completely penetrate the windshield and in to the passenger cabin. this poses a very serious safety issue if a rock should pierce the windshield on the drivers side and injure or distract the driver thus posing a safety risk to others in the vehicle or in close proximity. in addition, the impact is severe enough that the noise of the impact poses a dangerously high distraction. the impact is violent enough that i would equate the sound to exploding fireworks or a handgun sound in the cabin of the vehicle.

my complaint has to do with the paint! i have repeatedly gone into toyota to have them deal with this chipping problem. they have fixed chips only on the uprights beside the window. the chipping is occurring on all parts of the vehicle, on flat surfaces such as the hood and right and left sides. to date i have over 200 chips with 60,000 km - i have over 300,000 km on a 1997 ford that has been driven in the same conditions that has 1/20 the chips. there is a problem with the maroon paint on this fj cruiser. it is not going away and it appears to be a problem with the bond between the paint and the primer as best i can tell.

i purchased a 2007 toyota fj cruiser in september 2007. the first week i had the vehicle i was traveling through town at 45mph when a very small rock struck the windshield causing a hole in the windshield. the next day the hold splintered across the entire length of the windshield. i have now owned the vehicle for one year and i have one dozen rock chips in the windshield. my driving habits are ordinary city driving. each of the chips was caused by very small rocks at slow speeds. most instantly splinter out from the original chip. the material or design of the windshield is clearly substandard. the replacement cost is outrageous.

i have a 2007 toyota fj cruiser. i have the truck lifted with a dealership approved lift kit, and dealership approved tires. i have about 50k miles on it, and i just noticed the inner fender inside the engine compartment on the drivers side began to bulge out towards the engine. i took it into toyota and they one sales rep says i must of had an accident to cause this, i have not! another rep says he has heard of this issue but has never seen it before. they are going to have an engineer come and take a look at it. i have done my own research and have found that toyota has since redesigned this section now 3 times but are still claiming it to be user fault. i have 127 other people that have now claimed this issue many of which have stock vehicles and have never been off road or had the suspension or tires max out. this bulge leads to cracks right in the crumple zone of the engine compartment. which could seriously affect how the vehicle reacts to an accident and cause further harm to its occupants.

while doing routine maintenance i noticed cracks in both inner fender wells of my 1 year old toyota fj cruiser. i then starting doing research and found many people with the same problem. i contacted my local dealer and scheduled an appointment and at the time they said that it would be covered under warranty when a fix or repair was available. several months went by without a response and during that time i had installed new tires and suspension. i then had some more service at another dealer several months later and i was told that the fenders would not be covered under warranty and any alterations from stock would void all warranty. this was noted well before any modifications and i don¿t see where different tires, bumpers, or suspension would have anything to do with fenders. the repair would require replacement of the inner fender wells. many other people are experiencing this issue as noted on http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forums/toyota-fj-cruiser-polls/37556-do-you-have-inner-fender-bulges-cracking.html and http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forums/problems-dealer-service/33440-engine-bay-body-rips.html this repair has been done on several fj cruisers that i am aware of and the cracks could be considered a safety issue as they are in the crumple zone area.

a hairline fracture began growing from a central mid-point at the bottom edge of the windshield right before my eyes as i was driving. there was absolutely no road debris that hit my windshield that made this occur, nor have i ever taken the vehicle off-roading. from the central point the crack grew over the course of 10 seconds in both left and right directions until ending at the left and right sides of the windshield. i can't even begin to understand how this would happen. i belong to an fj cruiser enthusiast website fjcruiserforums.com and 33% of 2007 owners report having had/have a cracked windshield. now that i am part of that growing percentage, i'm not happy that there is no technical bulletin by toyota about this. nhtsa, you need to get involved. many owners also report the problem happening again soon after getting the windshield replaced. what has to happen to get a recall done here? a vehicle built for rugged off-roading should be able to not have a paper-thin windshield and not crack for any apparent reason when driving down the highway. this is not cosmetic damage this is a safety issue and needs to have a recall issue before some poor soul goes sailing through their windshield because it has a design flaw.

POWER TRAIN

vehicle was traveling in the snow in 4 wheel drive mode when it started shaking and vibrating as if it had a flat tire. because of the road conditions vehicle was traveling under the speed limit. failure was catastrophic and did not allowed the vehicle to coast too long as the vehicle jammed, as if the transmission had broken several gears and binded. vehicle came to a stop engulfed in smoke and flames were coming from the undercarriage. upon a quick inspection it was noted that the front shaft had broken off from the transfer case, oil was pouring out of the case and heat from the exhaust pipe, immediately next to it, had ignited the oil into flames. mud and snow was used to put out the flames. under further investigation it was noticed that one of the tires had a blow out, the rear driver tire. after replacing the flat tire with the spare, an attempt to carry on 2 wheel drive mode was made but resulted in immediate restart of the flames. flames were put out again using same method as before and vehicle was towed to a toyota dealership. dealership upon cursory evaluation decided that the transfer case had "insufficient" lubricant. this is ridiculous as the transfer case lost its oil when the shaft popped out with the front pinion gear causing the fire. there is no heat shield to protect oil from igniting in these vehicles. vehicle has not even been taken apart as toyota is not authorizing the warranty repair. all parts are available for review.

the inner fender wells on my 2007 toyota fj cruiser are bulging on both the drivers side and passenger side. definitely seems to be a defect in design due to possible inability of vehicle to handle the flexing, etc. it is now affecting my doors and basic alignment of vehicle. gaps are forming where there shouldn't be gaps, etc. i just got my tires balanced and aligned and the tires are wearing funny just 2 months after having work done especially on the drivers side where the larger bulge is. the bulge is noticeably getting larger with time and will eventually crack. i have friends that have the same problem, started with bulges and now their inner fender wells are cracked. toyota will not admit to having knowledge of this problem and yet every year the vehicle has been put into production the inner fender wells have been improved and reinforced...but even those are now failing and bulging. toyota is aware of this and blaming it on offroad use or aftermarket parts....but its happening across the board on all or most fj's. work/warranty work is being denied. we are now left with a vehicle that will most likely fall apart or even worse...will affect us in an auto accident...since its related to the crumple zone and is showing weakness. please help us and do something about it for us.

i drive a 2007 toyota fj cruiser and have experienced problems with braking on at least three occasions. i have heard from many other fj cruiser drivers who have also experienced this problem: when driving at relatively low speeds (below 40 mph) and attempting to brake, such as at a stoplight, the brakes will lock up causing the vehicle to continue to roll forward even while the brake is being pressed. it seems as though the abs kicks in as you can feel the "scraping" feeling through the pedal. from all other accounts and based on mine, it seems the common factor is rolling over uneven terrain while braking, such as a pothole, manhole cover, or just bumpy asphalt. so far i was fortunate not to have another car directly in front of me. however, i cam dangerously close to rolling through a red light which could have caused a collision with the traffic which had the green light. there are at least dozens of these same reports which i've read on just one fj cruiser owner forum. all are consistent with braking over uneven terrain which results in the vehicle continuing to roll forward.

i own a 2007 toyota fj cruiser. my brakes do exactly what is described with the 2010 prius. on uneven road surfaces and on sharp curves, the brakes periodically and momentarily fail. but a quick pump on the brakes with the foot off of the accelerator usually restores them instantly. i have had the brakes checked and so far it has been reported that they are in good shape. the last time it happened is stated herein under the heading "approximate incident date:".

1. the 'unresponsive' issue - this seems to happen when braking at low speeds (under 40mph) and one side of the vehicle hits a pothole, uneven pavement, or loose gravel. the result is that the brakes become momentarily unresponsive until you release and pump the brake pedal again. it definitely feels like the brake electronics/software are confused and get caught in a momentary glitch as it figures out what to do. 2. the 'overresponsive' issue - this seems to happen under very similar conditions to the other issue - i.e., low speed braking over uneven or broken pavement. the result is that the brakes become super sensitive to the point that normal braking flings you and your passengers hard into to your seatbelt restraints, as if you are slamming on your brakes. the brake pedal gets a little mushy and then wham... the brakes kick in big time. i am pretty sure that this condition is created by the brake assist function.

when applying my brakes on several occasions my brakes would fail to engage and stop the car. it occurs when i come to a stop under normal braking and one tire hits a bump such as a man hole cover. no matter what i do the brakes do not engage and the car continues to roll forward. anti lock does not engage when this occurs it is as if the brake pedal is dead. also, the opposite extreme occurred yesterday when applied my brakes with normal pressure and the vehicle braked very quickly and unexpectedly hard. everything flew forward in the vehicle. i believe these two issues are common to toyota fj cruiser owners and are dangerous life safety issues.

the brake pedal drops to the floor, and the brakes stop working over bumps while braking. im assuming this is the anti lock brake system. but it feels very dangerous. the brakes completely give out and you continue to roll forward without stopping. only way to make it go awhile when it occurs is to let your foot off the brake and re-apply. but you are at risk at rear ending someone since the vehicle stops many feet farther then your supossed to. this also happened on my 2007 toyota tacoma (which i sold) im assuming it had the same braking system as my current toyota. i believe the anti lock brake is defective. *cn

i bought my fj used in march with about 26k on it. love this truck to death until the brake failure slide!!!. i was coming to a stop at a busy intersection, i live in a busy city "newark nj" (i know i know, hold back the joke/sarcasm just for a bit ;-)). anywho, i was only doing about 25 or less and about 5-10 miles on a flat surface my car started to slide, i thought maybe it was oil on the ground or something so didn't pay it much mind. it was a very slow slide but it still slid a few feet where i had to pump the pedal to stop. it did it again when i was coming to an off ramp on rt 22. this time the truck slid super far the brake pedal was pressing just as hard against my foot as i pressed down to stop it, luckily there were no cars in front of me. scared the crap out of me!! this is when i found this forum and searched for similar problems. i found a few post printed them all out with suggested fixes and brought them to the dealer. i showed the service techs, and they like took a quick look and through them to the side. i said don't you want to keep these. they said no we don't need this stuff. they checked a bunch of stuff said brakes and pads were good, and said the problem was the brake fluid, so they changed it. road around for about another month or so and with no problems. until it happened again this time while i'm in stop and go traffic on my way to work. again slow pace but i still had to dip around the car in front of me and on to the shoulder to avoid hitting the car in front of me really sucks!! also it has happened to me with different tire pressures. i won't let my mom ever drive or borrow my truck because of this. if there is no recall soon i will rather sell my truck then kill someone. :-( *tw

i was driving my model year 2007 toyota fj cruiser to work on the morning of 2/9/2010 at 0730. while braking for a red light the passenger side front tire went over a wet storm sewer drain grate. the slick surface of the drain grate caused the tire to skid. the abs system activated and the brakes released, allowing the vehicle to proceed unimpeded toward the intersection. i pressed the brake pedal harder. the vehicle stopped just into the intersection. there was no collision. i do not know if pressing the brake pedal harder had any effect or if the system managed to apply the brakes itself after the tires were on pavement again. this is the first time i have experienced this situation. the consequence was that the vehicle proceeded about 10 feet into the intersection, e.g. beyond the "stop" line. if the brakes had not released the vehicle would have stopped behind the white "stop" line. according to the toyota dealer there is nothing wrong with the vehicle.

i took my 2007 toyota fj cruiser into the dealer around the end of 2007, it had 12,000 miles on it at the time. i told them that my gas pedal had stuck and i had to hold the brakes down and turn off the key to get it to stop. i then had to get out of the car in the middle of the road and reach down to release it. they told me that it must have stuck on the floor mat and to just watch it. it then stuck again about a year later and i was able to release it this time by kicking at it. i didn't think anymore of it until all the recalls started coming out on toyota gas pedals and i thought that you should know about this because it happened on a model that is not on the recall list and that the problem came up over two years ago. this incident is documented at thompson toyota in placerville, ca. i bought the car new at folsom toyota 2/2007. nothing has been done to fix this yet but the service director at thopson toyota was very concerned this time and said that someone was coming up from the bay area to look at it soon.

this just happened to me again today, i have an 07 toyota fj cruiser bought in mid 06, i was driving in pa (where yellow lights are shorter than my normal nj ones), the light turned yellow right before i got to an intersection so i gave a little extra braking, just as i hit a series of small potholes, abs kicked in, the normal abs feeling happened in the pedal, but then even after the potholes where the road was fine, the abs should have "disengaged", there was no longer the normal abs "pulsing", instead i had a near dead pedal. i had to push down with all my might to slooooooowly bring the truck to a stop in the middle of the intersection (from 5mph to 0 in about 20 feet). instinct says brake harder when you are not slowing down, but i don't think i could have pushed any harder. i am really glad this was just to avoid a yellow light and not to avoid a car crossing my path, i surely would have nailed it as the truck slowly rolled to a stop with maybe 10% braking despite me standing on the brakes. i have found from experience the only way to recover from the dead pedal is to let off it completely, and then you have a normal pedal again. this has only happened to me maybe 6-7 times in my 50,000 miles on the fj, but so far i have been lucky and most of the time it is simply stopping at a yellow and not because i need a real emergency stop. i was 100% stock for the first 5-6 times, and this last time i have slightly bigger tires and a lift. they will probably just blame it on the my lift and tires, but its happened multiple times while 100% stock. one day i am going to kill someone, or myself. the police will just write it up as "failure to stop, drivers fault", but some of you who have experienced this will know otherwise.

i was involved in an accident yesterday, thursday, 18feb10, at around 3:40 p.m. on the intersection of westheimer and beltway 8. i drive a 2007 toyota fj cruiser. there are 2 lights before i have to turn left on the beltway to head towards i-10. i stopped at the first light on the red light behind several cars as there was some traffic. then the light ahead to turn left on the beltway turned green so all of the vehicles traveled to the next light and started going thru the green light until it turned yellow. the 1st car at the light stopped and each vehicle stopped behind them including me. the problem was that instead of my car stopping when i hit the brakes it felt like the breaks tried to grab but they didn't grab and my fj cruiser kept on gliding until i hit the camry in front of me. the camry hit the lexus in front of her and the lexus hit a buick in front of her. it was very scary as i expected my brakes to brake when i hit them but instead it felt like my brakes tried to brake but they couldn't. the cops came and gave me a ticket for "failure to control speed" even though i was only going very slow since there was so much traffic but it was my fault because i hit the car from behind. the fj, the lexus and the buick were minimally damaged but the camry in front of me had the back-end smashed in. the police came and took our information and they checked out the owner of the camry because her neck hurt. i reported the accident to my allstate insurance and told them about my brake problem. i told them that in the past the only thing i had noticed was my car had problems in 2 instances when i was going over bumps. it felt like the brakes had trouble grabbing. i took my car into a allstate authorized dealer close by "don mcgill toyota" to have my car fixed but most of all to have my breaks checked. i won't feel comfortable driving my fj cruiser any more until the dealer can sure me that the break problem is fixed! i am so scared!

abs system failure in 2007 toyota fj cruiser. the abs, vsc, and vsc trac and skidding light came on on or about march 22, 2010. toyota dealer had trouble finding "problem" albeit they said the vehicle had no brakes or almost no brakes. they replaced the master cylinder assembly and in an unrelated issue replace ildler pulleys. picked up vehicle that was alleged repaired and driven by technicians to verify it was repaired and brakes worked. within about 20 miles of driving, brakes became very soft and car was hard to stop in a reasonable distance without veering. called dealership from vehicle on march 27, 2010 and was told to bring it in monday, but it was safe to drive unitl monday. i was told jamming on the brakes may cause the vehicle to skid uncontrolable and that the abs system and vsc would not cause brake failure. i drove the vehicle approximately 200 miles on a trip to see my mother and father. the vehicle was difficult to stop in a reliable and safe manner.

i own a 2007 toyota fj cruiser with a manual transmission. the throttle management software is a joke at best and dangerous at worst. the vehicle engine rpm will not go below 12-1800rpm when the vehicle is moving unless the speed is somewhere below 5mph. this can be very annoying at times and dangerous at others. driving on ice, towing a trailer, driving in hilly terrain. there is no engine braking available at any speed above 5mph. when the software does finally close the throttle completely it does so abruptly causing a jerky condition that can lead to loss of control on ice. at 20mph, for instance driving in a school zone, the throttle cannot be set to maintain a steady speed. the vehicle alternates between accelerating and almost complete throttle shut off. there is no in between. i have seen this same behavior when driving off road in steep terrain. not only is it annoying but it is dangerous. i have had the vehicle to toyota twice and they claim it is normal for this model and that there is nothing that can be done. the other thing that it does is hold the last rpm for several seconds when shifting between gears. not so much dangerous as annoying and causes excessive wear on driveline components and is also extremely wasteful of fuel.

body tears in the inside front fender wall of 2007 toyota fj cruiser. the tears were discovered at 23k miles after reading about the problem with pre-01/07 vehicles online. the manufacturer claims that these tears only happen if the vehicle is subject to a severe impact of 9g or above. i've driven every mile on this vehicle, it has never had any sort of hard impact at all. the dealer also suggested that the add-on front bumper caused the damage. the bumper, sold and installed by the toyota dealer, is aftermarket, but 27% of users reporting this problem online are 100% factory. i don't know when the damage occurred, but the vehicle has not been hit "jumped" or otherwise roughly treated. the cracks are at some body filler between two panels, and i suspect are the result of material fatigue. manufacturer claims that i must have somehow damaged the vehicle and they are not responsible.

this is a common problem being reported on toyota based forums. when you apply the brakes and only one side (left or right) of the vehicle is over some rough terrain, the brakes release even with the brake continually being pressed. it leaves the vehicle rolling instead of stopping until you hit the brakes again. some people have claimed it will engage again if keeping it depressed, but only after more than a second has past. i can recreate this action time and time again with the same failure happening every time.

i have discovered bulging and cracking issues in the engine bay inner fender aprons at the location of the crumple safety zones. toyota dealer and customer service personnel are aware of the issue but will not escalate my complaint or allow me to speak with a supervisor. further investigation shows that there is a high amount of owners experiencing some bulging and cracking issues with 2007 and some early 2008 models. the bulges and cracks in the inner fenders seem to be attributed to a toyota design flaw through certain vin numbers. some speculation was made that aftermarket steel bumpers had put extra weight and stress on the fenders, causing them to crack, but hundreds of fj's equipped with aftermarket bumpers suffered no damage. it is rumored that toyota addressed the problem in most 2008 models by boxing the inner fender and adding a third layer of metal and a new bolt inside the fender. this is a huge safety concern as it negates the absorptive properties of the frontal crumple zone, in addition to the obvious structural problems.

this is a toyota ecm computer electrical malfunction. i was waiting in my 2007 toyota fj cruiser at a traffic stop for the light to change from red to green. at this time, i felt a hard "bump" as if another car had rear-ended my fj. there was this real hard "thump." the fj had shifted gears on its own while at a complete stop. either the transfer case differential and/or the electrical rear differential locked up. both my hands were on the steering wheel and my right foot was on the brake at the time. there is no driver's side floor mat. the fj got a strong grip on the road and it lurched forward. there was a lot of extra power and a lot more traction than in the normal "d" mode for driving on dry pavement. instinctively, i pressed down harder on the brake in order to keep the fj from moving into the intersection. two seconds later, there was another "thump" and the fj shifted back into the normal road gear "d." i believe what happened is that the ecm computer sent a malfunctioning signal and locked up one or both of the differentials. this happened with an automatic transmission on dry pavement and stop when there was no driver command to shift gears. the sensation i felt is similar to using my fj for off-road driving and shifting into 4wd "low," but this was much more severe. my concern is that the ecm computer might malfunction highway speeds of 70 mph. it could send a similar command to lock up either the transfer case differential or electric rear differential. if this happens, the fj becomes a 5,000 lb. flying missile, basically out of control. i would not be able to steer the fj or to navigate turns properly. it would become a danger not only to myself, but to all other cars in the immediate vicinity. this is the first time it happened. something is dangerously wrong with toyota's ecm computer system in the fj cruiser.

i own two 2007 toyota fj cruisers, and both of the windshields have cracked. i've looked up on several forums, blogs, etc..., in regards to this problem and it seem that many other toyota fj cruiser owners are experiencing the same problem. i believe the design and the quality of the windshields they installed on these vehicles are sub standard and hinder the safety of these vehicles in an accidental rollover. toyota fails to acknowledge this problem and blames road debris for this problem. i would like for an investigation to be open so the can determine the integrity of the windshield, and hopefully a recall will be ordered to replace these defective windshields.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

i own a 2007 toyota fj, in various occasions when applying medium hard pressure to the brakes, i have two different brake reactions: 1. the tires will lock and screech for a short period of time, momentarily loosing control, i automatically let go of the brake pedal, push again to regain control and then the car just keeps rolling like no brakes were applied. or, 2. if i have to press on the brakes and the road the car happens to be on is a bit rough, with gravel, ridges or potholes or maybe just a poorly patched asphalt, the car will suddenly just roll, like no brake has been applied, even though i am pressing on the brake pedal, like loosing most of or all braking power. last event happened a couple of days ago where a car cut me off by a toll pay area, i pressed on the brakes hard just as the car was going over a rough section of the road and it kept rolling as with no brakes, and literally just by fractions of an inch did not hit the other car. i have gone to the dealer with the complain, they want me to pay for checking the problem, but i am going to have a tough time reproducing the problem, even though it is pretty consistent, its really not safe to try to reproduce. as i said previously the stated event was not the first one but certainly the most scary, and has happened at least 4 to 5 times in the years i've owned the car.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

my toyota fj cruiser accelerates by itself. typically, when it is stopped and idling, like at a light or stop sign. it does this when either i or my mother is driving it. the particular event i want to tell you about happened in august 2009. i was at a stoplight, in the center lane, and was going to change lanes when the light changed. i turned the wheel to the left before the light changed. when i took my foot off the brake, the vehicle accelerated rapidly into the left lane. i did not touch the gas pedal. my vehicle was struck by a pickup truck approaching in the left lane. the young girl driving the pickup truck was talking on her cell phone and did not expect my vehicle to move in front of her so fast. damage to my vehicle was about $1,800. i took my vehicle into a local shop for 30k service and shortly thereafter and they did not find any problems. i have seen that toyota claims there is no problem, but this is a serious safety problem. i really never know when my vehicle is going to surge. i have sent a letter to toyota requesting them to fix my vehicle and pay for the accident. i have not heard from them yet, but it has only been a few days.

there are times when my 2007 fj cruiser starts to shake. also since i first bought my vehicle, as i pressed on the brakes while being at a stop light, it would jerk and feel as if someone had slightly bumped into me from the rear of the vehicle when there was clearly no one behind my vehicle. this happens quite a bit. my main concern is that as i was driving recently i compressed the brakes before attempting a turn and absolutely no braking action happened. i wasn't going fast enough to overturn the vehicle, but none the less it is a very dangerous thing for a vehicle such as the fj cruiser to make turns at certain speeds, so for the brakes not to work at an important time can cause a severe, if not fatal accident. as i made the turn efficiently(by making a wider turn), i tried once again to use my brakes in which they felt like they were trying to catch again. at this time i felt unsafe and felt compelled to use the emergency brake. i have taken my vehicle to get looked at and they have stated an issue with the master cylinder. i have taken the time to look at various sites and forums in which many people have complaints of the same issues. this is a very dangerous issue for a vehicle that already has a caution for turnovers. my vehicle is a 2007 with under 39,000 miles on it. this should not be happening to a vehicle with mileage such as this. please address this issue for the concern of all fj cruiser owners and the safety of all other drivers around this faulty action. thank you. *kb

WHEELS

to whom it may concern, i recently bought out the lease of my 20007 fj cruiser from the hollywood toyota dealership. i'm writing to notify you that i am extremely unhappy with my service and that i feel unsafe in my toyota vehicle. i recently had to have my fj cruiser towed to the dealership because my front wheel nearly fell off while i was driving. when i inspected the tire it was clear that the wheel studs had broken clean off the body. the tire was barely hanging on by a thread. i'd like to note that upon purchasing the vehicle, i paid a substantial amount of extra money to have it "certified" by the dealership service department. it has been serviced at the dealership since the certification and it has only ever been worked on by toyota dealer service technicians. i never heard about any issues with wheels or about wheel defects or recalls. after the wheel incident, the hollywood toyota service department notified me that the wheel studs were defective and had failed. i have never been notified by toyota about this possible issue in my model car. i believe that if there is a known defect in a product that all toyota owners should be notified about it. after only the hub with obviously broken studs was replaced the dealership service department told me that there was no guarantee that more wheel studs wouldn't break off my other wheels. if i cannot be guaranteed by toyota that the wheels will stay on my car while i drive it then i have to say that i have lost all confidence in the brand and will never purchase another product from both toyota or this dealership ever again. i also asked the service department to notify the sales manager that sold me the vehicle so they could follow up with me to reassure me about the repairs. this request was ignored. 2007 toyota fj cruiser. consumer writes in regards to vehicle poor driving visibility and other multiple defects. *smd the consumer stated he had difficulty seeing oncoming traffic at intersections. it appeared the decision to go with a half door on the vehicle with a short frame was the root cause of the poor visibility. also, the inability to exit the vehicle from the back seat on the passenger side, was impossible without the front passenger opening the front passenger door first. the consumer also stated space left between the end of the roof and the beginning of the rear door drained so poorly that leaves and other natural debris would build up to the point that, when it rained, water would leak into the cargo area. also, despite the claimed gas mileage reported on the window sticker (20 mpg) the consumer never achieved more than 17.1 mpg, even though the bulk of his driving was done on the highway.

head a slight grinding sound sound coming from the rear of the car(2007 fj cruiser with 56k miles) took it in to have it inspected and was told it was the rear differential. bearings in the rear diff needed to be replaced and the job would cost estimated 1700 dollars to fix. really bummed to hear that as i dont drive aggressive with this car or drive it off road at all. keep reading other people have the same issue with this car year and toyota has not done a recall? i always tell people to buy toyotas because they are reliable, not a happy camper at all. the company need to do the right thing and recall something known to be bad!

cracks have appeared on both driver and passenger sides on the inside of front fenders. there have been numerous reports of this on the internet including forums and even facebook pages. in some cases the fenders have bulged out. i contacted toyota and they claim they have never heard of this problem. they could not tell me if this compromises the structural safety of the vehicle. this issue seems to be in the 2007 and early 2008 models. i looked at a friend's 2007 fj cruiser and he also has these cracks. it is interesting that toyota has no knowledge of this issue but seems to have remedied it in newer models. the following is toyota's response (in part) to my complaint: "we are unable to weigh the legitimacy of the information found during your online research, as the details of the individual concerns are not known to us. for that reason we encourage you to contact our offices regarding your toyota vehicle, sales, or service experience so that it can be fully addressed, and any trends identified. the warranty for the fenders is the warranty coverage for the front inside fenders is 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first from the vehicle¿¿s date of first use. our records indicate that date is september 2, 2007. once the vehicle is beyond these warranty parameters, the cost of repairs becomes the owner¿¿s responsibility. please be aware the information you have provided is used in combination with warranty claims and other customer contacts to track trends with our vehicles. if in the future a special service campaign (ssc)/recall or warranty enhancement is issued that would cover your specific issue, and you have already made repairs to the vehicle, toyota would review your repairs for reimbursement at that time. VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

i was driving at approximately 35mph when all of a sudden, there was a loss of acceleration and the engine just stalled in the middle of the road. i couldn't start it back up. there were no warning sign whatsoever and i didn't think it had anything to do with the fuel because it still read that i had a little under 1/4 of gas. upon putting fuel, the car started back up. the problem appears to be a faulty fuel float or sensor and is fairly common problem based on the thread from www.fjcruiserforums.com. i think toyota should put out a tsb on this or do a recall on this specific part. it's a very high safety concern when you're driving then all of a sudden your vehicle dies. this can definitely cause a fatal accident had this happened at a busier road.

ENGINE

i recently purchased a 2007 toyota fj cruiser with 95k miles on it. all was fine for about a month until i started experiencing unexplained accelerating and rpm surging when driving below 30 mph and regularly while stopped in traffic with my foot on the brake. it's not a huge rev, but rather the engine will suddenly rise from normal idle rpm to about 1300 rpm, then back down again. i can feel the transmission grabbing and i have to keep the brake depressed to keep from taking off. the surge generally lasts for less than 10 seconds and then goes away for a short time. i can get it to duplicate the problem (at a stop, in gear) almost anytime. if you are not paying close attention and happen to lift your foot off the brake, the vehicle will lurch forward start to accelerate until the transmission downshifts. i fear that this will cause a serious accident someday, and someone could get hurt or killed. i have taken it to my local mechanic who says that he can't quite figure it out.

the inner fender of my 2007 toyota fj cruiser has developed a noticeable tear, between the designed safety crumple zones. this area is obviously not sturdy enough to support normal driving conditions over time. once this weak point in the inner fender tore, it distorted the outside fender distance (gaps) between the fender and the driver side door. i find this tear to be an alarming alteration in my fj cruiser and i worry about the safety of myself and my family. please let me know if this is common and if a fix has been discovered!

this problem started with my 2007 toyota fj cruiser (6 speed manual) with only 84k miles. there is this squeaky noise coming under the vehicle and every time i pressed the clutch about 1-2 inches that noise goes away. after taking this to the mechanic we have found that the noise was coming from the throw out bearing, after much investigation i also found that this a very common issue with this model transmission. and more than 65% driver have this issue in the past. i have contacted the toyota of north america hq and they bluntly refuses to take care of it, and also informed me that this is not a big issue. toyota forum or even a simple search from the website will explain that how much of a issue is this with consumer who owns this type transmission. i urge nhtsa to address toyota to take care of this major problem and recall all of this for consumer needs. thank you.
