I DROVE OVER A GRATE ON A BRIDGE AND PUSHED THE BRAKES, AND THE CAR DID THE SAME THING, IT DIDN'T SLOW DOWN AS I EXPECTED, INSTEAD IT KEPT GOING. IF THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME HAD BEEN CLOSER I WOULD HAVE HIT IT. THERE'S NO VIBRATION CHARACTERISTIC OF THE ABS, INSTEAD IT SIMPLY FEELS AS IF THE BRAKES STOP BRAKING. AMERICAN TIRE CENTER REPLACED THE BROKEN STUDS, HOWEVER, WHEN OWNER TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER TO PERFORM PRECAUTIONARY WHEEL STUD REPLACEMENT THE DEALER, (WITHOUT PERFORMING INSPECTION) SAID IT WAS AMERICAN TIRE CENTER WHO LIKELY OVERTORQUED BOLTS AND THAT IT WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER FACTORY WARRANTY. LUGS WERE ALL DEFORMED AT SPECIFIC POINT ALONG THE MIDDLE OF THE SHAFT AND HAD A STRETCHED "TAFFY-LIKE" APPEARANCE BUT ONLY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LUG. REPLACEMENT COST FOR COMPLETE WHEEL LUG REPLACEMENT WAS ESTIMATED AT $600.00 BY HUNTINGTON BEACH TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. BROKEN WHEEL STUDS RETAINED BY OWNER FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATION. FURTHER ACTION SUSPENDED UNTIL OWNER RETURNS FROM MILITARY DUTY OVERSEAS. TOYOTA SHOULD REPLACE ALL THE STUDS ON THE VEHICLE AS A PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE. TAKING THE ISSUE UP WITH THE DEALER TOMORROW. COULD LEAD SOMEONE TO LOSE CONTROL OF CAR OR HIT SOMETHING IN EMERGENCY BRAKING CONDITION. TOOK MY CAR IN FOR RECALL ON SEAT-BELT AND HAD THE DEALER LOOK AT THE BRAKES TOO. DEALER INDICATED THAT SUFFICIENT BRAKE PADS EXISTED AT BOTH FRONT AND BACK, BUT FRONT ROTORS WERE WARPED. I HAD FRONT BRAKE JOB (REPLACE PADS AND MACHINE ROTORS) AT A COST OF $249.77. IN MY OPINION, THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE CORRECTED BY TOYOTA MOTOR COMPANY AT THEIR EXPENSE. tl*the contact owns a 2010 fj cruiser. while driving at speeds of at least 20 mph and up, the vehicle throttle would stick intermittently. while shifting gears, the vehicle would exhibit an abnormal increase in engine rpms and would hesitate to decelerate. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where they could not duplicate the failure and advised the vehicle was operating under normal conditions. there were no repairs made to the vehicle and there were no recalls. the failure and current mileages were 1,900.

my car is a 2010 toyota fj cruiser which i purchased in october 2009. the brakes didn't stop the car as expected in two occasions, at about 7000 miles the first time, and then a month later again. in the first occurrence, i was driving at around 25 mph on wet asphalt coming to a traffic light. i pushed the brakes to stop but the car continued to roll and i went into the intersection. the second time i was driving at around 40mph, again on wet asphalt. i drove over a grate on a bridge and pushed the brakes, and the car did the same thing, it didn't slow down as i expected, instead it kept going. if the car in front of me had been closer i would have hit it. there's no vibration characteristic of the abs, instead it simply feels as if the brakes stop braking. in both cases i pulled the handbrake because of my instinctive reaction to try to stop the car. i've been driving several cars over 15 years and this has never happened to me before. i took the car to toyota the first time and they had it for a whole weekend and told me they couldn't find anything wrong with it. further, this problem seems to be happening to many other fj owners, see http://tiny.cc/eabja.

i purchased 2010 toyota fj cruiser 4x4 automatic. it has part time 4 wheel drive system including 4h and 4l. i set into 4h (high speed 4wheel drive) and tried to park at the open parking lot. i found out car goes slow and stop before fitting into the spot. when steering is not straight, car slowly stops without braking under no accel. after that i tried to make a circle with my car, it did not work. i have to push the gas pedal to make a circle. in 2wd, i don't need to make circle with gas pedal on "d" drive. on 4wd, to make a circle, i have to push gas pedal and tire gets squeaking and making noise. i tested my cousin's 4 runner which i knew that both cars have same mechanism. on 4runner, we don't have no problem. the car goes very smooth on 4wd even make a circle. i went to the dealer to find out. first, "l" dealer, the guy said that 4h has center differential locked. so under 4wd, all wheels are goes same speed. so i shouldn't put 4wd on the paved road. 4wd in only for the off-road. i asked him "how about rainy day?" he said most of cars are 2wd. i went to "n" dealer. he doesn't know anything. i just dropped the car at "c" dealer now for 5k service. we talked long time for 4wd system. he does not know. he says that it might be different from 4 runner and characteristic. personally, i think 4wd system helps on rainy road and also helps on curvy roads on the mountain. so i put 4wd time to time. i don't think the car should be designed to have all differential locked on 4wd. how do i make a sharp turn with 4wd? i have to hear tire squeaking and feel like harm the car. i feel bad. if it is a characteristic about the car, i am ok with it unless it harms my car. but, it possibly something need to improve, can you find out? i was about to call toyota customer service, but i am afraid that they might say again "it is characteristic. you drive 2wd only on the road." thank you.

to whom it may concern: i am writing to bring to your attention an issue that i feel should be addressed by toyota due to the simple number of occurrences found in searches on the internet dating back to 2007. vehicle: 2010 toyota model: fj cruiser windshield: unreasonable/premature cracking vin #: [xxx] the angle at which the windshield is mounted is of grave concern to me, simply because of my recent experience 2 days ago. while driving to the gym i received 2 mere pebbles hitting my windshield, and immediately 2 cracks developed right in front of me. i am not talking about long running cracks, i am not even talking about the kind that spread like sun rays in all different directions. but i am merely saying that the marks on the outside of the windshield hardly even show an indention in the glass. and yet the cracks are deep in their single spots and as of yet they have not started to spread. i am not a tail gaiter, nor was i too close to the vehicle in from of me when this even took place. considering the sound that it made when i heard it i simply cannot believe the amount of damage that has occurred. if you simply do a google search for "fj cruiser windshield issues/complaints" you will find a plethora of complaints/blogs/rants & raves about how this has happened from 2007 onwards and all complaints have seemingly fallen on deaf ears. repairs range anywhere from around $500 - $1200 depending on where you go to replace it. and as far as i am concerned that after spending $38,000.00 on a vehicle this simply shouldn't happen. this is an issue that honda faced in certain year/model "honda elements". not only was there issue complained about enough to get free replacements but it also spurred honda to totally re-design the windshield for the following years. please do something about this issues as i am sorely disappointed. i do not feel as though i should come out of pocket for this repair nor that of my insurance company! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

driving a new 2010 toyota fj cruiser with approximately 600 miles on the odometer. moderate rain. when turning off a paved roadway onto a flat, wet, and muddy surface i had the experience of total momentary brake failure. this occurred as my left front tire left the road surface and hit the slick mud. my speed was under 20 mph and i was able to regain braking power by releasing the brake and then re-applying it. my assumption at the time was it was the result of some kind of weird abs behavior. i was applying the brakes very lightly to gradually slow my vehicle. the brakes behaved normally until the first tire hit the slick muddy surface. somehow the system caused all 4 wheels to lose all braking power.

2010 toyota fj cruiser wheel studs failed when removing bolts to rotate tires. american tire center of palmdale california originally installed four new tires with less than 10k mi. on odometer. at approximately 15k mi. when same company attempted to remove wheels for routine tire rotation the wheel studs began breaking one after the other. 4 out of 6 wheel studs failed on front right wheel alone. american tire center replaced the broken studs, however, when owner took vehicle to dealer to perform precautionary wheel stud replacement the dealer, (without performing inspection) said it was american tire center who likely overtorqued bolts and that it would not be covered under factory warranty. lugs were all deformed at specific point along the middle of the shaft and had a stretched "taffy-like" appearance but only in the middle of the lug. replacement cost for complete wheel lug replacement was estimated at $600.00 by huntington beach toyota dealership. broken wheel studs retained by owner for further investigation. further action suspended until owner returns from military duty overseas. vin not immediately available to complainant due to overseas deployment.

as i approached a red light in my 2010 fj cruiser the brakes seemed to have a mind of their own in that when i depressed the brake the vehicle would lunge forward and stop repeatedly i narrowly avoided rear ending the vehicle in front of me. i have read about this being a problem for other fj owners on an internet forum and it appears to be a problem with the abs.

2 wheel studs failed on two different wheels after applying 80 foot pounds torque to the lug nuts. routine re-torque after the dealer rotated the tires for a 10,000 mile service. the stud metal appears to be too soft. even if these studs were over tightened at the dealership, they should be able to handle way more than 80 fp before breaking. this is extremely dangerous. toyota should replace all the studs on the vehicle as a precautionary measure. taking the issue up with the dealer tomorrow. i will not feel safe driving this vehicle until all the studs have been inspected and replaced as necessary. *tt

while approaching a stoplight with light braking, for approximately a half block, the abs started to pulsate the front brakes thus causing them to lose effectiveness. i tried to push harder but had no effect on the condition. i then let clear off the brake pedal in order for the brakes to "reset" if you will, then i was able stop prior to running through the red light. had there been a vehicle or pedestrian in front of me the outcome would have not been a good one. i believe toyota has a problem with this issue.

i have a copied a post i found regarding 2007 fj's, as i had the same problem with my '07 fj, and after 6 months of repairs and no solutions, i traded it in for a 2010 fj, and now i'm having the same exact problems, as described below: i have a 2007 toyota fj. the steering seems terribly weak and unpredictable. i've had the wheels aligned three times, but the problem continues. toyota says the there is no issue but that the steering on this style vehicle is just sensitive. while i really enjoy the vehicle, i'm always on full alert when driving knowing that at any given time, the steering may suddenly take the vehicle left or right with no predictability. i have never experienced a newer vehicle that requires so much attention to the steering. it may go left or right when the roadway surface changes, when encountering uneven roadway surfaces, when transitioning from wet to dry or ice to clear pavement, or for seemingly no reason at all. often i find myself actually counter steering (inputting opposite tension on the wheel) to keep the vehicle from going leaving the lane i'm traveling in. it is very unpredictable while changing lanes. as i begin a slow move to an adjacent lane, the steering may suddenly just pull me over to which i then have to counter steer to keep from going too far. i took my 2010 fj to a toyota dealer where i bought it here in abq, and they said they couldn't find anything wrong, of course. they said they would file a complaint with toyota headquarters and sent me on my way. with my '07 fj i had the front brakes done, all new lug nuts, new tires, new shocks and struts, 7 alignments, and 3 rotation and balances (on the new tires), all within only six months using 5 different shops, and it still wasn't fixed. i am very unhappy and do not feel safe on the road in my 2010 fj. please help.

severe steering wheel vibration between speeds of 55-70 mph. steering wheel will shimmy when traveling between the speeds of 55-70 mph. has been a problem since new. toyota dealer notified 3 times so far. they performed road force balance and alignment. shimmy still present. was told that "they all do this and it is normal". shimmy is so bad at time that vehicle feels unsafe to drive during these episodes, prompting me to quickly, sometimes unsafely slow down to below 55 mph. this has occurred in heavy traffic on highways and is definitely unsafe.

upon opening the car door on the morning of 4/7/14, i discovered that sometime between the early morning hours of april 5 and the morning of april 7 the interior caught fire. it had burned itself out by the time i discovered it. damage to the 2 front seats, the center console and all 4 window visors. interior of vehicle is covered with black residue. the fire appears to have originated in or near the console between the 2 front seats. there is no electrical inputs in this area (i.e. mp3 slot, etc). there were no combustible materials present that to my knowledge could have ignited. cause of fire unknown. no previous issues with the car.

when braking at freeway speeds (anything above 60) the car vibrates, most apparent in brake pedal and severe vibration in the steering wheel. first started happening when the car was still under warranty, but after several months with this problem, warranty had expired. looked on the internet and came to determination that front brake rotors were prematurely warped - someone else with fj cruiser had the same issue. vibration worsens with higher speed conditions. could lead someone to lose control of car or hit something in emergency braking condition. took my car in for recall on seat-belt and had the dealer look at the brakes too. dealer indicated that sufficient brake pads existed at both front and back, but front rotors were warped. i had front brake job (replace pads and machine rotors) at a cost of $249.77. in my opinion, this is a serious safety issue and should be corrected by toyota motor company at their expense.
