A TRAFFIC JAM (STOP AND GO) AND LOOSE POWER WHEN CLIMBING FOR IN EX. PARKING PLACES THAT HAD RAMPS (0-5 MPH) DUE TO ERRATIC UPSHIFT RATIO CORRECTIONS THAT FORCES PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL TO BE ABLE TO KEEP THE CAR CLIMBING THE RAMPS CAUSING ERRATIC JUMPS/SPEEDS/PULLS AND SOMETIMES THE ENGINE TO BACKFIRE WHEN CLIMBING. CAR ALSO HAD NOTICEABLE JUMPS WHEN BRAKING TO A FULL STOP CONDITION FROM ANY SPEED. TESTED BY DEALERSHIP, DIAGNOSED AND REPLACED THE CVT TRANSMISSION WITH A REMANUFACTURED UNIT, GOT IT BACK AFTER 4 DAYS. RIGHT AFTER DRIVING IT OUT OF THE DEALER WHO SUPPOSEDLY TOOK CARE OF THE 5K MILES MAINTENANCE AS WELL, MAINTENANCE REQUIRED SOON INDICATOR STARTED TO LIGHT EVERY TIME THE CAR IS STARTED. THIS CONDITION COULD INCREASE THE CHANCE OF AN ACCIDENT WHEN DRIVEN UNDER THOSE CIRCUMSTANCES DUE TO ERRATIC/UNEXPECTED SPEED VARIATIONS. TRAC OFF & CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON BARELY FOR A DAY EVEN THOUGH THE MALFUNCTION WAS PRESENT AND WERE OFF WHEN THE CAR WAS LEFT FOR THE REPAIR IN THE DEALER, EVEN THOUGH THE CONDITION STARTED AT LEAST 10 DAYS BEFORE AS AN INTERMITTENT SITUATION, GETTING WORSE AT DAYS, NOT PRESENT DURING NORMAL TO HARD ACCELERATION BUT HAD TO BE TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP BEFORE THE APPOINTMENT DUE TO WORSENING OF THE DRIVABILITY, BUT THE GAUGES NEVER LIGHTED UP, BUT FOR A WHILE, THE DAY BEFORE IT WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHICH MAY INDICATE THAT DUE TO THE NATURE OF THE PROBLEM THE ON BOAD DIAGNOSTICS SYSTEMS MAY NOT ALERT A DRIVER OF THE MALFUNCTION, EVEN THOUGH IS PRESENT, WHICH MAY BE CAUSING THOSE CARS BEING DRIVEN BY UNEXPERIENCED OWNERS/DRIVERS WITH THAT FAULT BEING PRESENT INCREASING CHANCES OF HAVING A ACCIDENT, FORTUNATELY AT LOW SPEEDS. *TR [CMPL_TYPE] => IVOQ [POLICE_RPT_YN] => N [PURCH_DT] => [ORIG_OWNER_YN] => N [ANTI_BRAKES_YN] => N [CRUISE_CONT_YN] => N [NUM_CYLS] => 4 [DRIVE_TRAIN] => [FUEL_SYS] => [FUEL_TYPE] => GS [TRANS_TYPE] => [VEH_SPEED] => 0 [DOT] => [TIRE_SIZE] => [LOC_OF_TIRE] => [TIRE_FAIL_TYPE] => [ORIG_EQUIP_YN] => [MANUF_DT] => [SEAT_TYPE] => [RESTRAINT_TYPE] => [DEALER_NAME] => [DEALER_TEL] => [DEALER_CITY] => [DEALER_STATE] => [DEALER_ZIP] => [PROD_TYPE] => V [REPAIRED_YN] => [NICAR_FAILDATE] => 0000-00-00 [NICAR_DATEA] => [NICAR_LDATE] => [NICAR_PURCH_DT] => [NICAR_MANUF_DT] => [nicarid] => 0 ) [3] => Array ( [CMPLID] => 1034607 [ODINO] => 10560915 [MFR_NAME] => TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION [MAKETXT] => TOYOTA [MODELTXT] => COROLLA [YEARTXT] => 2014 [CRASH] => N [FAILDATE] => 20140121 [FIRE] => N [INJURED] => 0 [DEATHS] => 0 [COMPDESC] => STEERING [CITY] => CORAL GABLES [STATE] => FL [VIN] => 2T1BURHE9EC [DATEA] => 20140122 [LDATE] => 20140122 [MILES] => 4450 [OCCURENCES] => 1 [CDESCR] => AFTER BEING DRIVEN FOR LESS THAN 200 MILES OF BEING RECEIVED FROM DEALERSHIP FOR A DEFECTIVE CVT TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT, DIFFICULTIES TO KEEP THE CAR GOING STRAIGHT SUDDENLY APPEARED, TRYING TO DO SO CAUSED IT TO PULL THE OPPOSITE DURING A SUBURBAN TRIP IN A HIGH SPEED WAY, SO HAD TO BE DRIVEN TO A SAFER PLACE, (GETTING WORSE RAPIDLY), AND MAKING CLUNKING METALLIC NOISES ON THE FRONT END WHEN TURNING AT CORNERS AND BRAKING, AND A LOUD HUMMING NOISE WHEN BRAKING FROM HIGHWAY SPEED (APPEARED AT THE SAME TIME AND AS SUDDEN AS THE STEERING SITUATION) TO A FULL STOP OR FROM HIGHWAY SPEED TO A SUDDEN LOWER ONE DUE TO CONGESTION. IT COULD BE VERY SCARY IF THE ENGINE SUDDENLY REVS UP AND THE CAR SPEEDS UP AT THE SAME TIME. I WONDER IF OTHER OWNERS OF 2014 COROLLA HAVE SIMILAR EXPERIENCES. IF SO, THIS IS SOMETHING THAT HAS TO BE INVESTIGATED. *TR [CMPL_TYPE] => IVOQ [POLICE_RPT_YN] => N [PURCH_DT] => [ORIG_OWNER_YN] => N [ANTI_BRAKES_YN] => N [CRUISE_CONT_YN] => N [NUM_CYLS] => 4 [DRIVE_TRAIN] => [FUEL_SYS] => [FUEL_TYPE] => GS [TRANS_TYPE] => [VEH_SPEED] => 30 [DOT] => [TIRE_SIZE] => [LOC_OF_TIRE] => [TIRE_FAIL_TYPE] => [ORIG_EQUIP_YN] => [MANUF_DT] => [SEAT_TYPE] => [RESTRAINT_TYPE] => [DEALER_NAME] => [DEALER_TEL] => [DEALER_CITY] => [DEALER_STATE] => [DEALER_ZIP] => [PROD_TYPE] => V [REPAIRED_YN] => [NICAR_FAILDATE] => 0000-00-00 [NICAR_DATEA] => [NICAR_LDATE] => [NICAR_PURCH_DT] => [NICAR_MANUF_DT] => [nicarid] => 0 ) [12] => Array ( [CMPLID] => 1051549 [ODINO] => 10575543 [MFR_NAME] => Toyota Motor Corporation [MAKETXT] => TOYOTA [MODELTXT] => COROLLA [YEARTXT] => 2014 [CRASH] => N [FAILDATE] => 20140226 [FIRE] => N [INJURED] => 0 [DEATHS] => 0 [COMPDESC] => TIRES [CITY] => NEW PORT RICHEY [STATE] => FL [VIN] => 2T1BURHE0EC [DATEA] => 20140329 [LDATE] => 20140329 [MILES] => 492 [OCCURENCES] => 1 [CDESCR] => IN DEC 2013 THE LEASE END ON MY 2011 COROLLA WAS COMING DUE SO I PICKED UP A 2014 TOYOTA COROLLA LE LEASE ON 12/4/2013. THIS VEHICLE HAD 8 MILES ON IT & WAS EQUIPPED WITH PROXES 4 PLUS 205/55/R16 TIRES ( I HAVE THE ID NUMBERS FROM EACH TIRE IF YOU NEED THEM). ON 2/26/14 THIS VEHICLE HAD 492 MILES ON IT & I NOTICED THE LEFT REAR TIRE HAD A LARGE ODD SHAPED CUT IN IT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE OUTSIDE TREAD AREA. I WENT TO SUNTOYOTA IN HOLIDAY FLA TOOK PICS OF THE TIRE DAMAGE & THE SERVICE REP [XXX] TOLD ME THEY DIDN'T HAVE A REPLACEMENT TIRE IN THEY WOULD HAVE TO ORDER ONE. I HAD PURCHASED ROAD HAZARD TIRE COVERAGE AT THE TIME I LEASED THE CAR & "ASSUMED" THIS ODD CUT CAME FROM ROAD CONSTRUCTION IN THE AREA SO I WASN'T CONCERNED. I HAD TO LEAVE THIS 2014 COROLLA AT DEALERSHIP FOR A GAS TANK ISSUE WHICH WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY SO I CALLED MY INSURANCE COMPANY PUT IN A CLAIM FOR THAT ISSUE & RENTED A CAR. ON 2/28/14 I WENT BACK TO SUNTOYOTA TO PICK UP MY CAR & WHEN I LOOKED AT THE REPLACEMENT TIRE I ASKED IF IT WAS 'NEW' & WAS TOLD YES IT WAS ALTHOUGH IT DIDN'T APPEAR TO ME IT WAS; I AM NOT COMFORTABLE WITH THIS DEALER. [XXX] ALSO SAID THAT FIDELITY WARRANTY SERVICE WASN'T HAPPY ABOUT REPLACING A TIRE THAT ONLY HAD 492 MILES ON IT SO WE HAD WORDS OVER THAT. NOW ON APPROXIMATELY 3/26/14 I NOTICED THIS REPLACEMENT TIRE HAS WHAT LOOKS LIKE STRESS LINE CRACKS STRAIGHT ACROSS THE WIDTH OF THE TIRE (TOOK PICS) IN 2 PLACES & CAR ONLY HAS 644 MILES ON IT. OBVIOUSLY I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THIS & MY SAFETY AS WELL AS THE SAFETY OF OTHERS RIDING NEAR ME SHOULD THIS TIRE COME APART. I HAVE LOOKED TO SEE IF THERE ARE ANY ISSUES WITH THIS TIRE BUT CANNOT FIND ANY RECENT ONES. I WILL ONCE AGAIN REPORT THIS ISSUE TO SE TOYOTA BUT I AM REALLY UNCOMFORTABLE NOT ONLY WITH THE TIRE BUT DEFINITELY WITH THIS DEALER & SERVICE DEPARTMENT BUT NEED TO PROTECT MY SAFETY IN THE EVENT SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THESE TIRES. 2014 COROLLA'S ALSO HAVE "DESIGN FLAWS".. SO I DRIED IT OUT, WHEN I VACUUMED IT OUT AGAIN A WEEK LATER THERE WAS WATER AGAIN UNDER THE DRIVER SIDE CAR MAT. AGAIN I DRIED THE FLOOR AND I TOOK THE MATS OUT, LET THEM DRY OUT. THEN EVERY MORNING I WOULD CHECK AND WATER WAS UNDER MY DRIVER SIDE MAT. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY THINK POSSIBLY A LEAK IN THE WINDSHIELD. I EXPLAINED TO THEM SEVERAL TIMES, I ROLL MY DRIVER SIDE WINDOW DOWN WHEN I GET IN MY CAR EVERY MORNING AND WATER LITERALLY POURS IN WHEN I START DRIVING. MY ARMS AND LEGS ARE WET EVERY MORNING, IT'S FROM THE MORNING DEW ON THE CAR, IT RUNS RIGHT IN. I HAVE TO KEEP A TOWEL IN MY DOOR COMPARTMENT SO I CAN WIPE THE WATER OFF, SO IT DOESN'T RUIN THE INTERIOR. THE DEALERSHIP HAS NOW HAD IT FOR 3 DAYS, FRI, SAT, SUN TO "DRY IT OUT" BECAUSE THEY PULLED BACK THE CARPETS AND WATER WAS UNDER IT. THEY SAY NONE OF THE TUBES ARE LEAKING AND ALL THE TUBES ARE UNDER THE PASSENGER SIDE ANYWAYS, EVERYTHING CHECKS OUT FINE. SINCE THEN HAVING PROBLEM WITH REAR WINDSHIELD. IN THE NIGHT DRIVING THERE IS A REFRACTION OF LIGHTS FROM THE CARS COMING FROM BEHIND. DEALER IS NOT READY TO FIX THIS ISSUE SAYING ITS A DESIGN FLAW FROM TOYOTA. WHEN CONTACTED TOYOTA THEY ARE NOT ACCEPTING THE ISSUE SAYING ITS USER PREFERENCE. ITS REALLY ANNOYING TO DRIVE IN NIGHTS ALSO ITS A SAFETY ISSUE WHEN VISIBILITY IS DISTURBED AFFECTING TO SEE CARS COMING BEHIND. THIS ISSUE IS IN ALL COROLLA 2014 MODELS AND EVEN IN CAMRY. THE DESIGN OF THESE COVERS RESULTS IN EXTREME REFLECTIONS MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO READ THE SPEEDOMETER DURING MORNING AND AFTERNOON HOURS WHEN THE SUN ENTERS THE VEHICLE FROM THE SIDE. THE REFLECTIONS UNDER THESE CONDITIONS ARE SO EXTREME THAT I CAN'T EVEN SEE THE SPEEDOMETER NEEDLE. TINTING THE WINDOWS DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. TOYOTA'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT TOLD ME THAT THEY ARE NOT ABLE TO FIX THE ISSUE. ON JULY, 03, 2014 I HAD TO GUESS MY SPEED BECAUSE THE SPEEDOMETER WAS UNREADABLE. I RECEIVED A SPEEDING TICKET SAYING THAT I WAS GOING AT A SPEED WHICH WOULD MAKE IT IMPOSSIBLE TO AVOID A COLLISION. I HAVE DRIVEN OVER 20 DIFFERENT CARS IN MY LIFE AND NEVER HAD A A SITUATION WHERE I WAS NOT ABLE TO READ THE SPEEDOMETER, EVEN IN MY 1968 OLDSMOBILE. TO MY UNDERSTANDING, A CAR MANUFACTURER HAS TO DESIGN THE SPEEDOMETER THE WAY THAT IT CAN BE READ UNDER ANY CONDITIONS WHICH IS POSSIBLE. IT APPEARS THAT TOYOTA'S ENGINEERS TOTALLY NEGLECTED THE PROBLEM OF SUNLIGHT REFLECTIONS WHEN DESIGNING THE 2014 COROLLA INSTRUMENT PANEL. POWER TRAIN

cvt transmission making erratic ratio corrections when car was being driven at low speed which made the car literally jump at some speeds (0-30 mph) making it difficult to drive for in ex. a traffic jam (stop and go) and loose power when climbing for in ex. parking places that had ramps (0-5 mph) due to erratic upshift ratio corrections that forces pressing the accelerator pedal to be able to keep the car climbing the ramps causing erratic jumps/speeds/pulls and sometimes the engine to backfire when climbing. car also had noticeable jumps when braking to a full stop condition from any speed. tested by dealership, diagnosed and replaced the cvt transmission with a remanufactured unit, got it back after 4 days. right after driving it out of the dealer who supposedly took care of the 5k miles maintenance as well, maintenance required soon indicator started to light every time the car is started. this condition could increase the chance of an accident when driven under those circumstances due to erratic/unexpected speed variations. trac off & check engine light came on barely for a day even though the malfunction was present and were off when the car was left for the repair in the dealer, even though the condition started at least 10 days before as an intermittent situation, getting worse at days, not present during normal to hard acceleration but had to be taken to the dealership before the appointment due to worsening of the drivability, but the gauges never lighted up, but for a while, the day before it was taken to the dealer, which may indicate that due to the nature of the problem the on boad diagnostics systems may not alert a driver of the malfunction, even though is present, which may be causing those cars being driven by unexperienced owners/drivers with that fault being present increasing chances of having a accident, fortunately at low speeds.

STEERING

after being driven for less than 200 miles of being received from dealership for a defective cvt transmission replacement, difficulties to keep the car going straight suddenly appeared, trying to do so caused it to pull the opposite during a suburban trip in a high speed way, so had to be driven to a safer place, (getting worse rapidly), and making clunking metallic noises on the front end when turning at corners and braking, and a loud humming noise when braking from highway speed (appeared at the same time and as sudden as the steering situation) to a full stop or from highway speed to a sudden lower one due to congestion. all this happened to appear on this last trip. had to be towed back to the dealership. condition showed up during a continuous rainy condition, perceived like a total loss of front end alignment, plus the noises. as of the writing of this message, just a few hours have passed after the incident happened, but because of the potentially dangerous "collision situation " experienced, due the speed of the highway in which this condition suddenly appeared (nothing warned about something wrong going before) is this report being sent. maybe caused by or related to the procedure executed during the previous cvt transmission replacement, (my opinion) has not yet been diagnosed by the dealership.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

i was driving my corolla s plus 2014 on el camino real, san mateo, ca southbound just past hillsdale blvd, when the engine became very noisy. i looked at the instrument panel and found the followings data: 1) rpm meter - 3500 2) speedometer - 30mph 3) lcd display - eco bar gone the car behaved the same even when i took my foot completely off the accelerator pedal. transmission defect and/or computer malfunction? luckily i was able to pull my car to the roadside and braked to a stop. i turned the engine off. after 2-3 minutes, i started the engine and all returned to normal. the exact same happening occurred to me just 2 days later on march 19, 2014. it could be very scary if the engine suddenly revs up and the car speeds up at the same time. i wonder if other owners of 2014 corolla have similar experiences. if so, this is something that has to be investigated.

in dec 2013 the lease end on my 2011 corolla was coming due so i picked up a 2014 toyota corolla le lease on 12/4/2013. this vehicle had 8 miles on it & was equipped with proxes 4 plus 205/55/r16 tires ( i have the id numbers from each tire if you need them). on 2/26/14 this vehicle had 492 miles on it & i noticed the left rear tire had a large odd shaped cut in it in the middle of the outside tread area. i went to suntoyota in holiday fla took pics of the tire damage & the service rep [xxx] told me they didn't have a replacement tire in they would have to order one. i had purchased road hazard tire coverage at the time i leased the car & "assumed" this odd cut came from road construction in the area so i wasn't concerned. i had to leave this 2014 corolla at dealership for a gas tank issue which was not covered under warranty so i called my insurance company put in a claim for that issue & rented a car. on 2/28/14 i went back to suntoyota to pick up my car & when i looked at the replacement tire i asked if it was 'new' & was told yes it was although it didn't appear to me it was; i am not comfortable with this dealer. 2014 corolla's also have "design flaws".. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

STRUCTURE

so i leased the 2014 toyota corolla s plus on 2/23/14. approximately 2 to 3 weeks later i was vacuuming it out, when i lifted up the driver side car mat it had an enormous amount of water under the mat. so i dried it out, when i vacuumed it out again a week later there was water again under the driver side car mat. again i dried the floor and i took the mats out, let them dry out. then every morning i would check and water was under my driver side mat. i took it to the dealership they think possibly a leak in the windshield. i explained to them several times, i roll my driver side window down when i get in my car every morning and water literally pours in when i start driving. my arms and legs are wet every morning, it's from the morning dew on the car, it runs right in. i have to keep a towel in my door compartment so i can wipe the water off, so it doesn't ruin the interior. the dealership has now had it for 3 days, fri, sat, sun to "dry it out" because they pulled back the carpets and water was under it. they say none of the tubes are leaking and all the tubes are under the passenger side anyways, everything checks out fine. personally i think its a design flaw, with the windows seeing as how the 2014 is a redesign.

STEERING

myself and my sister were going from east boston to i93 via the sumner tunnel onto route 93 to the rockingham mall and i was driving 55mph at or around andover/ north andover in the middle lane and suddenly the car started veering to the left and then to the right for about 1-2 minutes. i had both hands on the wheel and i had absolutely no steering at all, no power, no regular, nothing! there was nothing i could do and all the cars around me where passing me and going into different lanes and they all stayed as far away from me as possible and then all of a sudden it came back as if nothing happened. i leased it at atlantic toyota and i called and asked to speak with the head of the service dept. and i was told everyone had gone home for memorial day weekend and call back tuesday morning, and then i asked to speak to the head of the dealership and i got no answer and i was not able to leave a message or anything, the only person i spoke to was the receptionist and she couldn't give me any answers or anyone to call, she wasn't at all interested when i told her my sister and i could have been killed, all she could say was call back after the memorial weekend and i was furious and she hung up.

SEAT BELTS

on may 6, 2014, my wife darlene and i were driving home to wlliston, vermont from arlington, vermont. we were driving north at approximately 45 mph in our 2014 toyota corolla le. at the blinking light intersection of dorset street and cheese factory road, we made a right hand turn and drove east. it was a very dark night and i mis-judged the distance to the end of cheese factory road, where you could either turn left or right. at the intersection of cheese factory road and hinesburg road, there are no blinking lights or reflectors, and, in the darkness, i missed the stop sign, went straight through the intersection and crashed into a ditch on the other side of the road. upon impact, my air bags deployed, and i felt only a sharp pain in my lower back. immediately getting out of the car, i moved to the passenger side to find my wife out of the car on her hands and knees, crying out that she was unable to breathe. in the hospital darlene was diagnosed with a cracked sternum, an l 1 compression fracture in her back, 3 broken ribs and a broken left wrist. she spent 9 days in icu. it has only been in the last few weeks that my wife and i have had an in-depth discussion of the accident. darlene says that her seat belt did not hold her back, and that her chest hit the dash before her air bag deployed; yet, at impact she was able to see that my air bag had deployed before hers. this would probably account for the severity of her injuries and for the relatively minor injuries for mine. we are now aware that the 2013 toyota corolla had airbag issues and wonder if our 2014 toyota corolla might have similar problems. we have also been told by medical personnel that tremendous force would be required to crack a sternum, the kind of force that would come from hitting the dash board. for these reasons we are filing a claim.

STEERING

hello, i drive 100 mile every day from pittsburg, ca to hayward, ca for school. i recently purchased a 2014 corolla le, because i wanted a reliable car for my daily commute. i have noticed at speeds over 60 mph, my car seems to be blown around by wind and there is no wind gust strong enough to do that. i have visited the dealership (dublin toyota) twice in other to find out the problem, they said everything is up to spec. they have done alignment and even adjusted the tire pressure, yet there is no improvement on the steering or handling of the car. the car waves on the freeway and it is a struggle to keep it in one lane. i really feel unsafe in the car and i have tried everything including loading up my car with weight in order to make heavier. i know something is either wrong with the rear suspension and axle or the power steering is simply bad. please find out why this is this way from toyota, because i dont feel safe driving the car on the freeway. i noticed this problem starting the day i brought the car.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

toyota redesigned the instrument panel and went from a single clear cover angled towards the front to 2 separate instrument covers angled towards the left and right side. the design of these covers results in extreme reflections making it impossible to read the speedometer during morning and afternoon hours when the sun enters the vehicle from the side. the reflections under these conditions are so extreme that i can't even see the speedometer needle. tinting the windows did not resolve the problem. toyota's service department told me that they are not able to fix the issue. on july, 03, 2014 i had to guess my speed because the speedometer was unreadable. i received a speeding ticket saying that i was going at a speed which would make it impossible to avoid a collision. i have driven over 20 different cars in my life and never had a a situation where i was not able to read the speedometer, even in my 1968 oldsmobile. to my understanding, a car manufacturer has to design the speedometer the way that it can be read under any conditions which is possible. it appears that toyota's engineers totally neglected the problem of sunlight reflections when designing the 2014 corolla instrument panel.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

my complaint is not with toyota, it is with the new standards that require an extreme angle in the headrests of new vehicles. i am unable to use the headrest in my car unless i adjust the seat to recline and use a cushion behind me. the owner's manual advises against both practices, and they don't seem very safe to me. when i sit properly, the headrest forces my chin into my chest and causes neck pain and headaches. the headrest angle is not adjustable. my research shows that many others are having this problem as well. i understand that this new configuration is required by your standards to prevent whiplash injuries in accidents. please reconsider your ruling on this issue and allow us to drive safely and comfortably with adjustable headrests. is it better to injure all of us to prevent whiplash in the few who get hit?

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

i was not familiar with the light switch on the vehicle that i had just purchased and believed that i had turned on the lights of my vehicle. in reality i was driving with the taillights off because the light switch was in the "dlr" position. (the light switch is behind the steering wheel with small letters that can't be read in the dark). there is no indication that the taillights are off when the switch is in this position. the headlights are on as well as the instrument panel illumination. since then i have seen the same vehicle / model year driving without taillights in the middle of the night in approximately 5 occasions. i believe that sooner or later this design flaw will cause accidents.
