Defect Description:
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL
Potential Consequences:
On 3 separate occasions, the emergency collision avoidance system applies the brakes and is causing major problems. One time at highway speed, we approached a bridge overpass and the system slammed on the brakes as we approached the overpass at 65 mph. On a separate occasion we were atyempting to turn left to enter the highway and there were concrete barriers close. The system slammed on the brakes and we were sitting in the middle of the intersection until it finally gave me back throttle control. And then again, in a left curve, a car move to the right turn lane and slowed to turn, and the brakes again applied hard! We were almost rearended by a semi! I need this system turned off, but Freightliner tells me they cannot turn off a safety device! This is not right, or fair. Speed limiters have been able to be disabled for decades! But I can turn this feature off on my Jeep Grand Cherokee, why not on my Renegade? I have been driving for many decades and do not need my vehicle nearly causing rear end collisions from false alarms! Please help! If I try to disable the system, it will not allow me to use cruise control. This is dangerous, and poorly designed system that should be an option to turn off.
