Defect Description:
UNKNOWN OR OTHER
Potential Consequences:
My vehicle kept going into "limp mode" so I took it to the shop and they basically said $9,000 to replace. It's a 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport which I purchased from Carvana just over a year ago. After reading up on my vehicle, I found there were recalls on the CVT transmission the previous years because of the same exact issues. It's very unsafe because on more than one occasion, I pulled out of a parking lot and, drove for about a half a mile and then suddenly, my car loses power and starts to slow down in traffic. Now the expense to replace is just about what I owe on the vehicle. When I look online, there's many customers who have gone though the same thing. Now I have a car payment for the next 4 years on a car that I cannot safely drive. The issues from the previous years have not been resolved with the 2017 model year. I will continue to pay on it and leave it parked until there's a recall.

Defect Description:
POWER TRAIN
Potential Consequences:
The Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) system failed. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The failure caused the vehicle to lose acceleration, delay response to the gas pedal, and jerk while driving. These issues made it unsafe to drive, as the car could not maintain a consistent speed, risking accidents, especially in traffic or during merging. Yes, the issue was confirmed by the dealer, Jim Shorkey Mitsubishi North Huntingdon, after inspection. They verified the problem and provided diagnostic codes indicating internal transmission failure (P0776, P0868, P0446). 01-16-25 The vehicle was inspected by the dealership’s service department. It has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. Yes, warning lamps or messages were displayed prior to the failure about 7-14 days prior. The symptoms, including delayed acceleration, jerking motions, and loss of power, appeared suddenly on [XXX]. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Potential Consequences:
This 2017 outlander has had issues with the tire rod multiple times. It needed to be fixed approx every three months and the tires needed constant changing as well. This vehicle had a timing chain issue which left me stranded in the middle of the high way. the power stopped, the car started to jerk back and forth and it would power off. We had to get this car towed to three seperate mechanics as no one would work on a mitsubishi and I was told it was the timing chain with possible engine damage. Prio to all of this happening the radio and electrical system would freeze or automatically turn off and on, it never resolved and blue tooth was rarely able to be used.

Defect Description:
AIR BAGS
Potential Consequences:
My 17-year old son was stopped at a stop sign. He waited until any oncoming cars had passed before he started to move out of the stop. He turned right out of the stop and onto the cross street. After only a few feet, my son notice the front of the vehicle was angled toward the curb & he tried to pull the wheel out of the angle and stepped on the brakes. The steering wheel would not turn AT ALL & the brakes didn't do anything. My son stepped on the brake pedal two more times and the vehicle DID NOT slow down or respond to this. The car went into the front steps of our local Police Station. Because he had about 40 feet from stop sign to impact, we estimate he had about 2 seconds to respond to this situation & could not have exceeded 10-15mph in that time. Upon impact, the air bag did not deploy. There was minimal property damage to the building, but the car was totaled. The entire front end was pushed in. My son was able to exit the vehicle and luckily did not have any sever injuries. We are writing this complaint because of existing safety recalls to the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport for all the years surrounding our 2017 model. These complaints all note engine stalling after complete stops. The engine stalls lead to unresponsive steering wheels, brakes that don't work, and airbags that don't deploy. We want this situation investigated as well.

Each door latch on our car has had to be replaced, all at separate times since we bought the car in 2017. The door latches will not lock/unlock with the fob or driver panel. It causes a safety issue with the door. It could come open (from failure to latch) while driving and people can fall out. It does not lock/unlock when you lock the car from the driver panel or fob and people can just open your door and enter it. Which has happened to us. The only way to lock/unlock it is from the inside from that door, since the fob, driver panel do not work, but then you have to scoot across the seat and come out the other side of the car to get out of the car, and then you still can’t unlock it unless you scoot back over and unlock that door since there is only 1 door with a key entrance, the driver door. It’s not been a recall on this specific year (2017) but it has been for 2016. We are now replacing our 4th latch because of this issue, hopefully the hatch does not do this as well. Many others with the same year car have had the same problem, I’ve seen many complaints online, and still no recall has been made about the door latches for 2017. It’s a HUGE safety issue not being able to lock and unlock your car door, or the door possibly failing to latch and someone falling out of the car door.

Many others with the same year car have had the same problem, I’ve seen many complaints online, and still no recall has been made about the door latches for 2017. It’s a HUGE safety issue not being able to lock and unlock your car door, or the door possibly failing to latch and someone falling out of the car door.

I'VE HAD MY ROUTINE MAINTENANCE DONE ON THIS VEHICLE SINCE I FINANCED IT BACK IN JUNE OF 2019 WHICH WAS AT 47K MILES. THERE WAS NO ISSUES, I HAD MY LAST MAINTENANCE DONE IN OCTOBER AT 70K MILES. MY TRANSMISSION SHOWED NO SIGNS OF GOING OUT , THERE'S NO LEAKAGE OF ANY SORT. IT JUST DECIDED SATURDAY, JANUARY 2 OF 2021 THAT IT WAS JUST GOING TO GO OUT. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP JANUARY 5TH, AND HE TOLD ME IT'LL BE $7035.09 TO REPLACE. I FEEL AS THOUGH THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS TRANSMISSION JUST LIKE THE RECALLS FOR THE 2016 MODELS. THE DASH JUST NOW SAYS TRANSMISSION SERVICE REQUIRED. IT WAS SO SUDDEN! I WAS AT 35MPH AND THE CAR BEGAN TO SHUDDER UPON ACCELERATION WHILE DRIVING SATURDAY. SO, I HAD TO DRIVE AT LEAST 10MILES BACK HOME AT 20MPH, BECAUSE I WASN'T SURE OF WHAT THE ISSUE WAS AT THAT MOMENT. I HAD A MECHANIC CHECK THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND HE SAYS THAT THERE WASN'T A DROP OF FLUID IN THERE. WHEN I GO GET MAINTENANCE DONE I AM TRUSTING THEM TO MAKE SURE I HAVE EVERYTHING CHECKED IN ORDER FOR ME TO FELL TRUST AND BE SAFE WHILE DRIVING A VEHICLE THAT I FINANCED FROM THEM. I COULD'VE HAD A ACCIDENT OR ANYTHING. THEY'VE ONLY CHECKED WHAT THEY WERE PAID TO DO AND THAT WAS THE OIL CHANGE WITHOUT EVER CHECKING MY TRANSMISSION FLUID. THERES NO HOLES NOR ANY LEAKAGE THE CODE RAN AND SAYS P084A TRANSMISSION HAS INTERNAL DAMAGE. I'VE REPLACED THE WINDSHIELD WIPER TWICE AND THE TAKES A WHILE TO DEFROST THE WIPER BLADES MOVE SLOWLY WHEN TURNED TO THE MAX WHEN THERES A STORM.
