after a modest acceleration to pull into traffic, i had to stop suddenly due to a light and the car began to rev up to 1500 and back down over and over. i had to pull over immediately where it continued to rev and die down, regardless if i was in a gear or park. it is an automatic. i turned off the car and restarted, the problem went away but the engine light remained on for two days. i plan on taking to the dealer. it is only 7 months old, i bought it new. *nm

i was reading this complaint section and noticed that there was someone complaining about the same issues i was having. i own a 2005 mazda6 sedan sport -- it has died three times on me, for no apparent reason. once at a stop sign, again at a metering light on the freeway and then again in the middle of a busy intersection in san francisco. i have documented all three incidents and have brought to the dealership, but they never really found anything "wrong" -- but obviously something is wrong if my brand new car dies. this was back in november and it's been fine ever since (it's april now), but i still have some sort of anxiety when driving - not knowing if i will reach my destination or not. *jb

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

in august of 2005 i purchased a mazda 6 (automatic transmission). after 2 - 3 weeks of ownership my mazda died on me one day while driving on the highway. i immediately took it to the dealership yet no problem was identified. 4 - 5 months later my car stalled while sitting at a light. a couple of months after that, my mazda stalled again. a couple of days ago while backing out of the driveway my car just turned off. it's so annoying because i always take it to the dealership immediately after the stalling occurs and they can never identify a problem; they try to recreate the conditions and put miles on my car but it doesn't stall for them. when it stalls there is no warning (i.e no lights, engine noise, etc). it turns right back on immediately; i notice the lights and the fact that my engine is no longer on. i simply put the car in park and turn the ignition and the car runs fine. this stalling occurs every 5 - 7 months. i've complained and complained to every mazda dealership i've been to and have sent multiple emails and made multiple phone calls to the corporate office about this issue. because the problem can't be identified the mazda technicians can offer no remedy. *jb

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE

2005 mazda 6 6 cylinder with 61000 miles , needs new engine. the only sign was a screech noise a few times , took it to an auto shop, where they checked the belts ,and we could not reproduce the sound. started a minor oil leak ,and less than 4 days later engine failure, and the dealer says it needs a new engine. just out of warranty. mazda dealership says the oil looks black and indirectly told me that i probably did not do regular oil services, which is untrue . i just did not use the dealership. contact the mazda corporate, and they said they will investigate this problem , but have not received any response. i am totally disappointed in this vehicle, who i nursed and mostly did longer distance driving. the dealership repeatedly said that the car has a lot of miles on the odometer for its two years old. never had any vehicle who disappointed me like this! expensive lesson for me and mazda have not been helpful at all. every communication have been really vague and every person which i talked to made sure that i that i know that the car have not been maintained by the dealership and stressing the fact that the car does not have any warranty. not any real help from the mazda dealership except giving me the expensive quotation for a new engine. did not offer to take up the issue with mazda corporate even though the car is fairly new and well taken care off. the warrant just expired a 1000 miles ago. any one with a similar experience of engine failure in a relatively new car? *ak

at 28,000 mi i had to replace the front brakes on my mazda 6 sport wagon--right side at 4, left side at 1. i went to three different places--they all said the wear was incredibly uneven due to a fault with the brakes. my (no longer) mazda dealer sil-tehar in co said the difference was within their acceptable limits. obviously, i didn't take the car to the dealer for service. the people who did service it found a part missing--a clip that helps the pad separate from the wheel. the only people who had actually taken the brakes apart (until the replacement) was the dealer. so either they didn't put the clip back when they took them apart or the clip was missing to start--which could explain the incredibly uneven wear.*ak

VISIBILITY:REAR WINDOW WIPER/WASHER

4/28/08 i drove to an appointment (25 miles) at which point it began to rain. i inadvertently turned on the rear wiper an immediately turned it off once i noticed it hit the bike rack on the back. there was a strong odorous burning smell. the smell was still present on the my return trip back home. 4/29/08 i did not notice the burning smell to and from work (2 miles). 4/30/08 on a trip downtown i was caught in rush hour traffic with my kids in the car. after about 45 minutes both the kids and i noticed a strong burning smell. i asked my son to check the rear window as it appeared smoke was now coming from the window/panel area. he yelled that it was smoke and that we need to pull over. rear wipers had been turned off since monday. we were able to get off the expressway and park to check out the damage. upon opening the hatch a burning smell was quite intense. the plastic covering of the rear hatch (near the window) extremely hot and was too hot to touch. i immediately called the local mazda dealership to ask what i should do and i was told that the service technicians had gone home for the day (4:30pm). i figured that i could pull the fuse which would remove the power source thus preventing any further damage. my son and i were able to remove the fuse and it appeared to have solved the problem for the return trip but it was difficult to tell as the car already had a strong burning smell within. i immediately called my father (a former auto worker in michigan) to discuss this with him and he said the fuse should have blown and that it should not have escalated to the point of burning and smoking. he could provide no reason why the fuse would not have blown. i am scheduled for 5/14/08 to have this incident evaluated by the dealer.

TIRES

i purchased a new mazda 6 and it came from the factory with michelin tires. the problem was immediate with a severe rough ride when the tires were cool thus causing steering problems. i rarely drive this vehicle (7,000 miles per year) and was shocked to find sidewall buldges and tire separation on the right rear tire. a few weeks later, i noticed the left front tire had the same problem. since day one, all 4 of the tires wouldn't hold their tire pressure (even with no leaks) which couldn't be figured out by "professionals." i returned my car to the dealership where they told me to immediately get my car into a michelin tire center. i was told that the damage had been caused by a low speed impact and a gash in the tires and would have to buy 4 new tires ($190 per tire). this was definitely not caused by an impact or a gash so i took the car to another michelin center. they told me this time that it was caused by high speed impact but that there was no gash and i would have to buy their tires ($199.42 per tire). finding their stories not matching up, i took it to a third michelin center. they told me that it was caused by hitting a curb! the employee then told me that it was highly unlikely that the two bulged tires on either side could have been caused by hitting a curb or high/low speen impact after an inspection. he recommended a different tire, not a michelin. i ended up buying new tires costing me a grand total of almost $1,000. i insisted on the old tires which the tire center didn't want to readily give back to me. upon inspection, there was neither gash nor tread wear as they had less than 20,000 miles. at all three michelin dealers, they refused to cover them under warranty. it seems obvious that these tires were defective and dangerous from day one. i am writing to you so that this may prevent an accident or death since i am so lucky to have "caught" the problem before anything serious happened. michelin tires need to be held accountable!

my daughter and were at the top of the on-ramp for i-64 east bound, at south charleston, wv. this is a long merge lane that becomes the far-right lane on i-64. we were driving at 40 to 42 mph, as attested to by two witnesses. a t this point we felt a left "shimmy" in the rear of our 2005 mazda 6 hatchback (front wheel drive, with anti-skid brakes, and sensors to signal the other wheel if one wheel begins to slide). my daughter corrected the shift and we continued in the merge lane. within a few seconds we experienced a violent jerk to the left in the rear of the car. it threw us into a swerve, but, my daughter regained control, and we were again headed east. within seconds, the rear again jerked left violently. we were thrown into a clockwise spin and hurtled into the median wall, then propelled backward. the car was totaled. the drivers door opened when my daughter applied force to it, but, the passenger door wouldn't open until my daughter pulled from the outside as i shoved with my feet inside. the hood was up, smoke & steam poured out, & we heard popping sounds. i was able to exit when my daughter pulled on the outside and i pushed with my feet on the inside. fortunately, there was no traffic in the immediate area & oncoming traffic was distant enough to stop before reaching us. there was a husband and wife whom had been driving behind us since the entrance of the on ramp and `witnessed the entire accident. they called 911, then pulled to the side of the interstate to wait for emergency and police help to arrive. the husband helped me sit down and asked if i was alright, then said, "i've never seen anything like that before in my life. the entire rear of your car just slid out from under you to the left". in 36 years of driving, dealing with different weather, road surfaces, day and night, have never experienced what happened with our car. our insurance sent a crash inquiry, but no accident reports came back. she suggested i file a report with this agency.

i have a 2005 mazda 6 wagon bought new off the dealers lot. 4 years later, in sept. 2009 with 22k miles on it, i was coming off a curving exit ramp when i stepped on the gas to merge into traffic and nothing happened - no pickup - it was like i just started coasting. this happened a few times before in the previous years (maybe 4-5 times), but those times it felt more like a belt slipping and it "caught" again very quickly, like in a split second. the ramp experience was more pronounced and lasted longer, like a full 2 seconds, which was more scary and potentially more hazardous. turned out the tcm (transmission computer module) had to be replaced. it would have cost $1400+ but luckily i bought an extended warranty when i bought the car so it covered that cost. it's happening again, so i have to take it in to the dealer when i can to get it checked again. not a good feeling when you're trying to merge into traffic and you expect the car to move when you hit the gas, and it moves just enough to get the nose of the car into the lane of travel, then stops dead while cars are bearing down on you. extremely scary. hoping this is not a continual recurring event.

automatic transmission failure in 4th gear on 2005 mazda 6. we bought the car new and 2years later the transmission started slipping in 4th gear. i complained to the dealer and they said they found nothing. the third year it became pronounced and still they said they found nothing. i found out last year that mazda knew about the problem in the transmissions and never contacted us about a replacement transmission. i went to the dealership when i found out late last year and i was told that they could no do anything about it as the car was over the mileage. i strongly feel that mazda knew the transmissions were defective and never notified owners. we are the only registered owners of the vehicle and it is an accident waiting to happen because once the vehicle gets in the 4th gear it vibrates and shakes the whole car violently.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

we were driving from los angeles, ca to fremont, ca on the i-5 highway. weather was hot - about 95f to 100f that day. about mid-way in our drive, the car became very jerky when i lift off, or step back on, the throttle. i pulled off to the closest exit and proceeded to a gas station. as we were rolling to the gas station, i needed to step extremely hard on the brake pedal, but was still not able to completely stop the vehicle. vehicle kept rolling at ~5 mph despite i step hard on the brake. i needed to push the transmission lever to neutral, and then pulled the hand-brake to completely stop the vehicle. after the car was stopped, the engine rpm hovered between 2k - 3k rpm, but my foot was off the gas pedal already. the check-engine-light was not on, and the car was not overheating. we opened the hood and checked the fluids, and everything was normal. we felt we were not able to stop the car because of the engine hovered at 2-3k rpm despite my foot being completely off the gas pedal. we then shut down the car. after 10 minutes, we re-started the car and everything was normal again. it has been ~500 miles since this incident but the issue has not returned yet. nonetheless, we feel that it is a dangerous safety issue because when it happened, the car cannot be safely stopped.

the clutch on my mazda 6 no longer works correctly and i only have 33,248 miles on my car. mazda usa said there's nothing they can do about it. they said before they'd even consider any help, i should take it to a mazda dealer (17 miles from my house) and have it diagnosed ($110 for diagnostic testing). in order to get it there, i'd have to have it towed because it's so far from where i live, i'd have to pay for the tow to and from the dealership. the cost estimate for the mazda dealer to replace my clutch is $1000-$1300. they went on to state that if it is a defective item, before helping me, they'd look to see whether i was "loyal" in getting the car serviced with one of their dealers. the closest dealer is 17 miles away, am i supposed to drive that far for an oil change? i bought the car in 2005 brand new from santa monica mazda which has since closed down. the clutch went out while i was driving on the freeway and i've been driving manual cars for 20+ years. this is not fair and mazda doesn't care. they really suck...as this clutch should have lasted 100,000 miles. the consumer stated mazda replaced the clutch on september 2, 2010 under the goodwill program. the issue has been resolved. updated ivoq 10/08/10*jb

i purchased a new mazda 6 in 2005. since then i have had to replace the battery 3 times. each time the battery went out with no warning. it would be driving fine, i would park and get out. when returning to the car, it will not turn at all. internal and external lights and radio worked fine but car will not turn. the first two times the battery was jumped and the car was taken to a mazda dealership and replaced under the mazda battery manufacturer warranty because they went out before the 36 month warranty. the last time in august of 2010, the battery will not jump. i paid to have the car towed to a mazda dealership. i was told that the battery had a crack in it and acid leaked out and as a result, the engine wiring harness needed to be replaced. at this time, the battery was covered under the mazda manufacturer warranty and the wiring harness was covered under my mazda extended warranty plan. i did some research and found that there is a possibility that the leaking acid could have caused an explosion and my family was lucky. i received a call from the dealership saying that the manufacturer warranty will replace only the battery itself and the extended warranty is denying the entire claim because the damage to the wiring harness was from the battery acid. so, here i am with a battery under mazda manufacturer warranty, covered by a mazda extended warranty plan and i had to pay for everything except for the battery itself. i paid for the tow, the labor and parts for the harness, rental car while it was being services. and the fact is that there was a faulty battery that leaked acid, put my family in danger, and i was stuck with the collateral damages. considering that this was my 3rd battery replacement in 5 years, i'm certain there is something wrong with these batteries or something in the car itself. i am now driving with my 3rd mazda battery replacement and afraid of when my next incident is going to be..

the car unexpectedly accelerated with my foot of the gas pedal. i was driving around a curb at about 20 mph and all of sudden it increased to 40 mphs, and the rpm needle jumped up and down, and finally it got stuck at 3rps. i was on a flat surface and the vehicle continued to accelerate and make loud engine sounds. i tired to brake but the car continued to accelerate, i kept driving until i was able to let other cars pass, and pull over and put it in neutral. in neutral the car still accelerated, and made noises, that i then put it in parked. however in park the rpm was still stuck at 3 and the mph needle bounce between 0-40 mph. finally after a minute the needle drop to 0 mph, and i turned the car off and restarted it. after waiting 5 minutes i restarted the car and it acted like nothing ever happen. the next day after driving 15 minutes it repeated the same activity. i have contacted my dealership and set up an appointment. apparently this is a common problem with mazda between 03-05 with acceleration issues. however the is very dangerous, for me and my children and other drivers on the road. this could cause a accident or even death. this is something mazda needs to take seriously and needs to recall and repair to correct the problem.

TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM

i had a strange incident with my 2005 mazda 6 s 4-cylinder automobile. i am reporting this in case there might be a pattern that results in further investigation. the context is with respect to the automobile's traction control system. i was driving on a wet road where the rain had stopped about an hour earlier. there was no standing water as the rain had been light anyway. i was on a three-lane (6-lanes total) narrow divided highway going about 45 mph. from the middle lane, i was entering the left lane as a fast driver in that lane passed by me. as i was entering the lane, this driver who had been pulling ahead quickly, hit their brakes and decided to move into the middle lane (and maybe further to make the exit). at this point, i tapped my brakes and it was then that my vehicle started moving hard right and eventually turning into the oncoming traffic. i was trying to steer it in the other direction but it continued moving. in the end, it was like back-to-back u-turns but there was no crash, damage, or injuries. during the incident i felt that i had little control over the vehicle and the whole incident was baffling since i have driven almost all of the 47,000 miles on the car in all kinds of weather with no such experience or even hint of such an experience. while it could have been many things that caused this, i think that the situation may have been started and then exacerbated by the traction control system. after tapping my brakes, i think the traction control system detected the uneven speed of my front wheels and engaged to begin regulating the speed of the vehicle and continued during most of the incident an exacerbating the problem. i understand this is a complex problem with difficult to analyze causes. i am reporting this in case others have had this same issue and a pattern emerges.

i was driving with my 7 year old in my 2005 mazda 6 when i noticed the car was accelerating on its own just a litle bit. i didnt think much of it at the time. about 2 minutes later the rpms went up and down 3 times( 1000 rpms each time). immediatley after that, my brakes stopped working while i was going about 35 mph. i had the brake pedal floored and it barely stopped in time. i managed to stop with my emergency brake and put on my hazard lights for a few minutes while the car was still running. i had to get out of the road so i attempted to reverse very slowly and the brakes were suddenly working. i pulled the car in a parking lot with no brake problems and got it towed to a shop. the shop is telling me they are not finding any problems but i dont feel safe in the car without an answer! im worried it may happen again and cause an accident next time.

STEERING

my car was making a clicking sound and i could fell it in the steering wheel when i was turning. i took it to a mechanic thinking it was a ball joint. he said i needed to replace the control arm it was rusted and ready to fall apart. so i did and it was expensive. the other side wasn't in bad shape at that time but was starting to deteriorate. well now that one side is stronger than the other it has deteriorated fast and also needs to be replaced asap. i just wanted to complain because i saw the recall for the tribute and i seem to have the same problem as well.

POWER TRAIN

it has a very rough shift from first to second gear. it doesn't grind or or clunk, it's just a violent shift almost like its slipping.
