Jaguar Land Rover North America, Llc
NHTSA Campaign: 18V088000 SAFETY RECALL
190 Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Feb 1, 2018
Safety Issue:

Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC (Land Rover) is recalling certain 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque convertible vehicles equipped with 20-inch wheels. The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) may be incorrectly set and thus may not illuminate the warning on the instrument panel when a tire's pressure is 25% below the recommended cold inflation pressure. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 138, "Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems."

Potential Risk:
If the vehicle fails to warn the driver of low tire pressure, driving the vehicle may result in tire tread separation, increasing the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Land Rover will notify owners, and dealers will update the TPMS setting to correct the illumination setting, free of charge. The recall began on March 9, 2018. Owners may contact Land Rover customer service at 1-800-637-6837. Land Rover's number for this recall is N164.
Additional Details:

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Safety Issue:

Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC (Land Rover) is recalling certain 2018 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Velar, and Land Rover Discover Sport vehicles equipped with a 2.0L gasoline engine. The fuel rail end caps may leak, possibly resulting in fuel vapor or liquid fuel leaking into the engine bay.

Potential Risk:
A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source such as hot engine or exhaust components can increase the risk of a fire.
FREE Recall Solution:
Land Rover will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel rail, free of charge. The recall began on March 8, 2018. Owners may contact Land Rover customer service at 1-800-637-6837. Land Rover's number for this recall is N138.

VISIBILITY/WIPER

Potential Consequences:

The front windshield began leaking into the cabin interior. A windshield replacement has been performed. I paid for the replacement in full. Receipts provided to Land Rover. The auto glass specialist that performed the work performed the replacement of many windshields ( same make, model, year) for the local LR dealer. Safety concerns existed due to the fogging of the windshield interior and the possible water damage to electrical control components. The problem has been documented by a Land Rover authorized auto glass specialist. The windshield replacement was performed by an authorized Land Rover vendor which provided a statement of cause of failure being contaminated glass and primer failure. The cause / nature of the failure is the same as many other vehicles of the same make , mode and year. Also a Class action lawsuit exists for the same problem. The windshield leak presented the symptoms of water intrusion to the interior, resulting in a fogging of the windshield and restricted frontal visibility. Upon contacting the local Land Rover dealer for a resolution to the safety problem, they denied providing help due to the VIN number being out of the posted range and suggested that I contact my insurance company. I felt compelled for safety reasons to seek replacement of the leaking windshield as soon as possible.

STEERING

Potential Consequences:

When traveling on [XXX] in New York, at 78 mph, my 2018 Range Rover Evoque experienced an electronic power steering rack failure I had just picked up my neighbors from the airport and were on the way home. When traveling on a smooth, straight highway, the audible notification alerted and a message on the dash appeared stating "power steering reduced". When just trying to change lanes on the straight highway I would feel the strong resistance. When exiting the Interstate my neighbor sitting in the passenger seat even helped me with turning the wheel on the exit ramp. We manage to make it back to my driveway. My wife normally drives this vehicle and if it was her driving at the time of the failure in our more rural area, there is no doubt she would not have been able to steer and would have crashed with a high possibility of personal injury. There is no way she would have had the strength to control the vehicle. The possibility of injury or death is high. If that had happened legal action would have been taken. I had the vehicle towed 90 miles to the JLR dealership and they eventually completed the fix by replacing the electronic power steering rack at a cost of over $6k. There was much discussion with the dealership about the failure and the kept saying nothing could be done. I chose to pay for the repair only because I wasn't going to continue making monthly payments for a vehicle i couldn't use, or even move. There is a recall in regards to steering rack bolts. However my vehicles VIN is just shy of meeting the require range. Cost of tow, fix, and travel to pick it up after the repair is close to $7k. The large amount of added debt is a huge inconvenience for a repair that should be covered by a major part that was defective. I have attached the dealer repair estimate, the dealer repairs made, and the text communication with the dealership in regards to the steering rack failure. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Potential Consequences:

Several time While driving on the interstate my vehicle loses power and low coolant light came on then went off. Light constantly does that even though there is plenty of coolant in the tank. One day [XXX} when trying to pick up speed, I was going 60 and my car went completely limp then picked back up causing me to panic as I had truckers on the highway as I was trying to merge. I pulled over to the side of the interstate hit my emergency flashers, turned the car off and started again to continue on my trip when I started driving again I had my car start overheating and was slowing down not able to get over something popped and smoke started coming out from under the hood a belt had busted causing fluids to go everywhere. Had my car towed to dealership in Hilton head island where they replaced my belt and battery said everything was fine and good to go. Car continues to have same problem and can’t get dealership to fix it as appointments are 2 months out. Took it to a mechanic who said I clearly have slash marks and burns on hoses and one of the water lines that is aluminum or metal had a whole that has turned into a bigger one which should have been caught when belt busted. Range Rover said they inspected my car but upon looking at the receipt I’m showing no driving inspection done only a visual which things were missed INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6

Potential Consequences:

While driving, the vehicle will randomly shut off in traffic. I will usually hear 3 "beeps" right before it happens. The vehicle shuts down and goes into Park automatically. It has to be restarted and placed back into Drive. The display will read "Select Gear to Maneuver" and the home screen will read "Special Programs Off" with a lengthy definition. Vehicle was inspected and diagnostics performed by Land Rover dealer in Indianapolis. Technicians did not find any stored codes, warnings, or any indication of what would cause the defect. Since the inspection in late July, the vehicle has shut down 3 times. 8/21/23 & twice on 9/20/23.

Potential Consequences:

When I reverse in cold outside temperatures there is a very loud squealing noise. When turning wheel slowly left or right there is a loud grinding noise that gets louder when pressing the gas. When I turn the heater on over 2 notches a loud buzzing whistling sound gets louder the higher I turn the heater on. I have taken it to Land Rover and they tell me they couldn’t find anything wrong but there is definitely something wrong.

POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

We purchased this vehicle used with 33,000 miles (approx). We noticed the passenger side cv axle making noise when turning. We contacted a local JLR dealership and were told that this was a normal sound for an AWD vehicle. The vehicle now has approx 60,000 miles and the sound has gotten much worse. I started researching the issue and there is a TSB for this exact issue (LTB01030NAS2). We took the vehicle into a JLR dealership and were told that since it is out of warranty we will have to pay to get it fixed. This impacts the CV Axle, in the TSB it plainly states the axle and bearings were improperly installed from the factory. This should be a recall and is definitely a safety issue, as the bearing can give way and you can lose the front passenger side wheel/tire.

Defect Description:

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

Vehicle is experiencing the same malfunction as was recalled on 2019 and 2020 Range Rover Evoque's for "excessive engine cooling fan noise in the passenger compartment and eventual degradation of the engine cooling system performance." After several minutes of operation, the engine cooling fan begins running at an abnormally loud volume and despite adequate engine temperature levels, does not stop running until operation of the vehicle has ceased. After much research regarding this issue I have found it to be apparent in several Jaguar and Land Rover vehicle models apart from the 2019 and 2020 Range Rover Evoque. One such consumer stated the fan spun in such excess that it dislodged and powered through the front hood of the vehicle which could have resulted in serious bodily harm. The problem has been reproduced with a service technician and is awaiting inspection by Jaguar Land Rover in Honolulu who have acknowledged by telephone that this is a known issue. The vehicle has not been inspected by police or insurance representatives. No warning lamps or sensors have indicated a malfunction of any sort, at any time.
