Jaguar Land Rover North America, Llc
NHTSA Campaign: 23V393000 SAFETY RECALL
29.9K Vehicles Affected
Recall Date: Jun 1, 2023
Safety Issue:

Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC (Land Rover) is recalling certain 2017-2020 Land Rover Discovery vehicles. The UniLatch Keyless Vehicle (KV) entry function may fail to properly latch the rear passenger doors, which can result in the doors opening while driving. In addition, the instrument cluster open-door warning light may fail to alert the driver of this condition.

Potential Risk:
Rear passenger doors that open while driving can increase the risk of a crash. An instrument cluster warning light that fails to alert the driver about unsecured doors can increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Dealers will disable the UniLatch Keyless Vehicle (KV) entry function, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 26, 2023. Owners may contact Land Rover customer service at 1-800-637-6837. Land Rover's number for this recall is N798.
Additional Details:

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Recall Date: Feb 25, 2021
Safety Issue:

Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC. (Land Rover) is recalling certain 2018-2020 Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Discovery, and Range Rover Velar vehicles. The Auto High Beam (AHB) system does not indicate through the instrument cluster when the high beams are illuminated automatically. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Potential Risk:
The driver may be unaware that the high beams are illuminated, reducing visibility for oncoming traffic, and increasing the risk of a crash.
FREE Recall Solution:
Land Rover will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle software, free of charge. The recall began April 7, 2021. Owners may contact Land Rover customer service at 1-800-637-6837. Land Rover's number for this recall is N556.

When towing a trailer with the trailer lights connected to the trailer socket and the vehicle's Daytime Running Lights (DRL) are on, the trailer lights may not function.

Potential Risk:
If the trailer lights are not working, following traffic won't be aware the vehicle is slowing down or stopping, increasing the risk of a crash.

Defect Description:

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Potential Consequences:

Vehicle is leaking water from A pillars and it is damaging the vehicles electrical systems. Humidity build up and mildew from the entry of water after a down pour caused mold to build up throughout the entire floor board. Dealer ship needs to address these issues and have a complementary inspection/service to resolve this matter. This can lead to electrical problems and airbag inoperative issues. To conclude this can total the owners vehicle since the fuses sit by the A pillar. Water entry will also cause corrosion to vehicle cause damage and jeopardizing the integrity of the vehicle structure.

VISIBILITY/WIPER

Potential Consequences:

My 2018 Land Rover Discovery started leaking water from the top of the front windshield any time it rained. The water intruded on the interior of the vehicle including, interior windshield, electronics mounted toward the top middle of the windshield, dashboard, seats, and electronics/buttons/controllers on the center console. The vehicle also made a loud "whistling noise" when driven due to an obvious issue with the windshield. I brought the car to the dealer on 1/7/2025. They verified the issue as an ongoing problem with Land Rover windshields leaking, stating many have shorted out the electronic systems on the vehicles due to water damage. They refused to take responsibility for the issue saying there was no formal recall on the vehicle. However, a search on google found that this is an ongoing problem that had been identified on a number of Land Rover vehicles where "water ingress into the passenger compartment or wind noise may be evident". See Bulletin: NAS18.09.004 issued by Jaguar Land Rover North America LLC on 3/23/2020 (listed as an After Sales Bulletin). Obviously Land Rover has been aware of this potentially dangerous situation since 2020 and has chosen NOT to cover the defect in manufacturing/assembly which I was forced to pay for. The cost to repair exceeded $1k out of pocket for an issue that should be a mandatory recall on all affected vehicles. Water making its way into the electronic system of the affected vehicles can result in a potential dangerous driving situation. This is a formal complaint and to put Jaguar/Land Rover North America on notice of a potential hazardous situation for which they refuse to take responsibility.

POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

Pulled out of car wash to drying area. Car was still in D, with foot on brake. After a few moments, auto start/stop triggered shutting the car off, but rotary gear selector retracted while still in D. Would not allow restart as trans still in Drive and dash displayed Gearbox malfunction. After a 15 minute wait for system restart, tried to start to no avail. Had to get Discovery towed to dealer which informed that gear selector failed and needed replacement. Thank goodness I wasn't in a traffic situation. This problem has recalls on other models in same model year. Desire the Discovery (D5) to be included in recall. Car is at 82K miles.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Potential Consequences:

Water leaking from roof, thought it was from the surround sunroof. Could hear air coming from roof. On December 30, 2024, after three weeks of heavy rain, found cup holders filled with water. Car started up, but the round button would not lift up from console next to cup holders. Could not put the car in drive, reverse, or neutral. Had to call for tow truck and take to dealership. Was told that the water damage was not from the sunroof, but in fact, from the front windshield coming detached from the glue. This was a great concern for me, because of the safety issue of not knowing that there was a problem with the 2018 models having this issue. We had done our research in looking up any issues with this car before we bought it. We did not find anything describing this issue. The windshield could have come unattached while driving down the highway at 60-70 mph.

STRUCTURE:BODY

Potential Consequences:

At the end of 2022 and early last year, I had multiple issues with the roof of my 2018 Land Rover Discovery coming apart/detached from the roof. On [XXX] a piece of my roof came off again that had already been replaced in 2023. There are four separate roof pieces and this is the fourth time one has separated from the vehicle (I believe three of the pieces at this point have detached). Two times, the roof pieces came off while I was driving on the highway, this could have seriously injured someone, luckily neither time hit a car or pedestrian. Land Rover will not accept that this is an issue with the build/body of the vehicle. I found a Land Rover forum where many people are having these same issues: [XXX] I am concerned that this will happen on the highway, cause an accident, and owner's will be held liable. I have attached multiple pictures I have taken reflecting this issue over the last year and a half, I tried to add more but I am receiving an error message. Potential Consequences:

To whom it may concern, I am writing to file a complaint about a serious defect in my Land Rover Discovery vehicle. The defect is a roof leakage near the windshield where it attaches to the body. This causes water to seep into the interior of the car and damage the electrical components. The service technician at the dealership informed me that they need to break the windshield in order to fix the leak and then replace the windshield. The estimate for this repair was around $3,500, which is unacceptable for a relatively new vehicle. I bought this pre-inspected vehicle in mid-2022 from the Land Rover dealership. I have learned from online sources that this is a common problem with many Land Rover vehicles, and that it poses a safety hazard as well as a financial burden for the owners. I request that you investigate this issue and issue a recall for all affected vehicles. I also request that you reimburse me for the cost of the repair or provide me with a replacement vehicle. I appreciate your attention to this matter and hope to hear from you soon. Potential Consequences:

July 2023 Jaguar LandRover of Sarasota serviced LandRover Discovery 2018 and checked for defect described in campaign no. 23V393 recall no. N 798. I was told my Discovery did not have the defect. One week later I was driving 40mph with my 12 year old autistic son in the back passenger seat when the door flew open. Fortunately, my son did not fall out of the car and we were not hit by oncoming traffic. The car needed to be towed and over a week later the dealership advised they have no part to repair the car, no loaner to offer me and no explanation as to why my car was checked for the defect in July apparently finding nothing, only to be put in a very dangerous position a week later. As an add on issue, my front passenger window will not roll up. This happened to the window on my driver side last year and was told the window motor needed to be replaced. Now the window on the passenger side stopped working. Is it possible water leaking into the door is eroding the electrical window motor stopping it from working. Can the passenger door lock and the window motor issue be connected? On four separate occasions trim on my Discovery have fallen off in the carwash. I was charged for parts and labor even though it did not seem normal for parts to literally fall off my car from being washed. I would like to be compensated for parts I had to purchase as well as the window being repaired at no cost. At the very least I expected a loaner vehicle, was told there were zero loaners available and have gone 8 days without transportation and secondly I would like to know how it is possible for the car to be checked for recall defect and told the car was safe and defect free.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

Car went black (all systems shut off) and i started to roll in the CVS parking lot when i was trying to drive in and Park. The brakes and nothing was engaging. IT happened so fast I was able to stop the vehicle and I am not sure how but may have just turned the shifter from drive to park... I took the vehicle in for service (a number of issues) and i forgot to mention this, I was told the Ground Stud needed replacing and it turned out this was likely the cause (I believe he said it had come loose). I have a extended warranty that has comprehensive coverage with CNA and they denied this part. Also, Land Rover recalled this exact part on 2019 and 2020 vehicles, clearly my 2018 has the same issue. Makes me wonder how many other 2018 vehicles also have the issue?
