Defect Description:

WHEELS

Potential Consequences:

Q, What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Alcoa Aluminum rim manufacturing defects part number 167041. At the moment I do have the rim available for inspection but Alcoa wants it returned for warranty. Q: How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The defects have shown up in the drop center of the rim allowing air to rapidly escape and possibly causing loss of vehicle control, damage to vehicle, flying debris. Possible loss of life in rollover. I have pictures and video of the defect. Q: Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? This is now the second, rim that has failed in the same way. Failures are only 2500 miles apart. The last one was sent to Alcoa for warranty. No need for independent dealer or service center to verify the problem. The problem is seen by use of water. Q: Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? The first Alcoa rim was sent back for warranty. As a mechanic this is one of the most rare types of defects to see in a rim assembly. One having the defect is rare enough. But having a second defect of the exact same type is now reaching the same odds as being hit by lightning. No outside damage or contact with a curb has happened. Q: Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Luckily for me I have an aftermarket TPMS system on the trailer that detected the rapid loss of pressure, of 2 pounds per minute. Thus saving me a complete tire blowout and further damage.Air loss happens faster the warmer the rim becomes. At the moment I do have the rim available for inspection but Alcoa wants it returned for warranty.
