SEAT BELTS

2011 jeep compass, a rental vehicle. the front right seat safety belt, while appearing to be buckled, was not securely fastened. when the vehicle came to a sudden stop, the belt unbuckled allowing the passenger to move forward towards the dashboard. no injuries resulted from the incident. upon investigation it was apparent that the outer plastic casing of the buckle receptacle was not in the correct position. this piece was moved by hand into the correct position, and the belt then apparently operated appropriately for the remainder of the rental period. *kb

WHEELS

while driving on interstate 5 traveling at 65 - 70 mph there was a loud explosion type sound and the front drivers side of our 5 week old 2011 jeep compass suddenly dropped. upon coming to a skidding stop in the center divide it was discovered that the wheel and tire had broken off of the vehicle leaving only the center part of the wheel bolted to the car. the car came to a stop on the rotor. the wheel's five spokes were completely snapped and the tire still attached with several burn holes on the side walls but no tread damage. there was no damage to any other parts of the car except for tire markings on the side as it detached from the jeep compass. the wheel and tire were found approximately 60 yards down the freeway. there were no injuries but chp said it was a very fortunate situation and it could have been far worse. the jeep chrysler dealership can not explain it. the insurance company can not explain it but said it was too cost prohibited to pay for forensic testing on the wheel so will only pay for the damage and not the "what ifs". we are being told that it is our responsibility to get the wheel tested for possible stress fractures. our compass has been at the dealership for a month and chrysler has still not sent an investigator to look at it despite our many calls. do not want to have just the one wheel fixed and get back in the car if all the wheels could be defective. we might not be so lucky next time. *kb

POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

(among other problems), this 2011 jeep compass has transmission difficulties. on multiple occasions the automatic transmission has failed to shift from gear to gear without manual assistance. it will whine and strain and just not change, even as the rpm climb sky high, it will not shift without assistance. this failure was first documented on 6/19/11 but there were multiple failure before this date. the system failure has resulted in a reduction of power to such extent that it is difficult to safely merge into a lane of traffic. during such episodes the accelerator could be pressed to the floor and the maximum speed would not exceed 20 or 25 miles per hour. this vehicle (which has other problems) is considered to be unsafe. i am presently waiting for a company "investigator" to access these problems. *kb

with my foot on the brake, completely stopped at a light or stop sign, while in drive only, the car vibrates and the engine makes a loud rumbling noise. this can be felt in the steering wheel, brake pedal and throughout the entire car. when i take my foot off the brake or put it in neutral, reverse or park the noise from the engine and vibration will stop. the vibration is so bad it is uncomfortable to keep your foot on the brake, or hands on the steering wheel, making it dangerous, as i am having to put the car in neutral at every stop. have had it at an authorized jeep dealer 2 times now and they have found nothing wrong. contacted jeep, as the car only had 3600 miles on it when i first took it in, they assigned me a case number, and will be in the shop until it is fixed. thank you jeep for trying to find a cure for this problem, as i love my compass, and really want it fixed.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

we purchased our 2011 jeep compass in december of 2011. approximately 3 months later my wife experienced an engine stall in the middle of making a left-hand turn going approx. 20 mph. there was no warning light or indication that the engine was no longer running. the power steering locked up and became very difficult to maintain control of the vehicle since happened in the middle of a turn into on-coming traffic. within a month later it happened to me and again while making a slow left-handed turn. my wife notified the dealership where we purchased the jeep and they said to bring it in next time it happened. it happened a 3rd time with my wife in june 2012 -again while making a left-handed turn. we then took the vehicle to the dealership for scheduled maintenance and to investigate the problem. they kept it for a week and said the computer diagnostics reported no issues. they said until it happened with them they couldn't isolate the problem. today, july 18th, 2012 it has happened again with my wife for the 4th time making a left-handed turn again. this is an extreme safety hazard and upon researching other customer complaints, it is quite common. in fact, i am finding that 25-50% of the customer complaints about the 2011 jeep compass are related to this engine stall out while driving. we have returned the vehicle to the dealership as we were instructed and i left them copies of the research i did and customer complaints so they have no reason to say it is isolated to just my vehicle because there is a definite trend that warrants a safety recall in my opinion. at this time it is in the hands of chrysler to bring this to a resolution. the vehicle only has about 8000 miles and lots of warranty left so i am hoping to see chrysler stand behind their reputation and do the right thing.

as i was putting items in the rear of my compass the rear hatch fell on my back. i saw it start to come down and caught it with my arm and tried to lift it off of me, but it would not stay in the upright position. the dealership has ordered and received the parts on september 21st, however jeep is waiting for more information to replace the hatch struts, as i have been having problems since january with the rear hatch rubbing the paint off of the bumper as well. if i would not of seen this come down on top of me and was able to catch it before it hit my back, it could of seriously injured me. or if a small child would of been lifting it, and it fell on them, it would of crushed them as the rear hatch is very heavy with bad struts. there is no reason these struts should of failed as the car is only 15 months old and 10400 miles.

while stuck in traffic for 6 minutes (windows down), the car temperature gauge went to "h". once i started moving, the guage went to half. when i got home i checked the fluid levels and they were fine. on the way to work the next day while stopped at a traffic light, the car temp guage went to "h" again. i brought it in to my mechanic who said that the fan motor was not spinning, causing the engine to overheat. upon further inspection he noted that the computer module that operates the fan was "fried" and the transmission dipstick somehow got lodged in the fan motor. i replaced the dipstick and computer module ($1100) and the same thing is happening again. overheating for no reason. when i called chrysler/jeep about my extended warranty, they said that only the engine was covered, not the computer module that could seize my engine. according to a local dealership, 70 computer modules were replaced in a week! when does this become a safety hazard? if i was driving on the parkway and my engine seized, i would of been dead! *js

my 2011 jeep compass that i bought new for $23,000.00 has 56,000 miles and wouldn't start. it is not reliable. many times i had a loss of power. had it towed to the dealership and they charged me $900.00 to fix it. they said i needed a new totally integrated power module. they said that my computer wasn't telling the engine to start and that was why all the lights were on in the dash but the car wouldn't start and that was also why i had a total loss of power. i spent the money to fix it at the dealership. not a week later i had the same problem!! i just spent $900.00 to fix 3 yr old jeep that i bought new foe 23 grand, so i would have something reliable for my 20 yr old daughter to drive while she was away at college and all that money was for nothing as my kid has a piece of junk that breaks down all the time. i looked online and saw all the problems that people are having with their jeeps. and saw how chrysler still hasn't done a recall. please look into this. i lost alot of money on a car that is worthless i cannot have my daughter drive an unsafe car. i will have to sell it. please look into this asap. it's just not right that this large corp won't stand behind their product. at 45000, the throwout bearing went on my jeep compass. this will also cause a need for a new clutch plate. i have been reading online, and this is a very common problem, for a lot of jeeps with manual transmissions.

noticed a grinding sound in the front end of the jeep. told dealership when i took the vehicle in for oil change. they replaced the lower control arms thinking that was the problem. before leaving i could still hear the noise. maintenance tech rode with me and narrowed it down to the gas pedal. at low speed (3-10 mph) when pressing/releasing the foot feet you heard the grinding. told me to bring the vehicle back later. not sure what actions they took at the bring back but they knew it didn't correct the problem. told me they were contacting jeep for information and there was another vehicle with the same problem. contacted the dealership again and was told they were going to try were going to try something on the other vehicle since i lived so far away. contacted them and was told it didn't work. they thought it might be the nature of the beast! they were going to contact jeep again. after more calls...today frustrated i told them i was not happy at all with the run around. people outside of the jeep can hear it as i drive though mall parking lots because they look when it makes noise. planned on getting a new compass and selling this one to my son for trade in value but have concerns. talking to others it came up how these other cars that had problems did not recall until so many people died. if i am spending money on a vehicle i will spend it on something that does not grind for an unknown reason. i was told to bring the jeep in and they would loan me a car so they could work on for the whole day. set up a day and asked for a number to call jeep myself. they gave me the customer service number and the lady i talked to there was great. she talked to me, contacted the dealership-talking to the service gal i am dealing with, made another call and then gave me a number to call on friday when i take the jeep in with a case number and the website for this.

POWER TRAIN

i bought the car in 2011. the transmission got broken before the car had 1000 miles and it was covered by warraty with a new transmission. a year later i was driving and the transmission light turned on and the car stopped responding. after waiting for about one hour, the light went off and i could drive to a dealer. they did not find "anything wrong" with the trasnmission and they did not make any reparation. a month ago the same happened after driving for two hours. i left the car at a different dealer, and after having my car for three days they told me the same: "nothing is wrong with the car" and no reparations were done. last sunday i was driving to a different state, and again after 2 hours driving, the car stopped responding and the transmission light turned on. after waiting for 2 hours in the roadside i could finally reach my destination. there is definetely something wrong with the transmission of the car, and it seems that chrysler does not want to take responsability for it. maybe they are waiting for me to hit 100,000 miles to tell me that the transmission is useless and i have to pay for a new one??? how come the same problem happened 3 times and 3 dealers did not identify the problem? the fact is that the car is not reliable, and i cannot plan any trip longer that 1 hour drive...

on 8/20/2014, my windshield wipers stopped working after a couple miles driving in a downpour. i feared for my safety and the safety of other vehicles on the highway from the point the windshield wipers "froze" vertically in my field of vision until i could pull over to safety. from that day on, my windshield wipers were inconsistent and they would work about every other time i started my 2011 jeep compass. sometimes they would work when i started my car, but quit sometime during my commute. i took my car into the dealership on 9/5/2014 and was told my tipm was defective causing the windshield wipers to work intermittently and it needed replaced. i ordered the part and scheduled an appointment to have the tipm replaced on 9/9/2014. after getting home from the dealership, i google searched tipm and was disgusted by the numerous complaints of chrysler, dodge, and jeep vehicles with this issue. chrysler knows about this issue and they need to be held accountable for the faulty and defective part. this needs investigated and a recall initiated. the total repair cost me $979.45. i should not have to pay for a known issue affecting thousands of other chrysler, dodge and jeep vehicles.
