AT THE TIME OF THE EXPLOSION NO VEHICLES WERE DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF MY VEHICLE. VEHICLE WAS BEING PASSED, IN THE LEFT LANE OF A 4-LANE MAJOR HIGHWAY, BY A NEW PASSENGER CAR, WHICH WAS APPROXIMATELY 1 CAR-LENGTH AHEAD. THE CAR SOUNDS AN ALARM AND THE MESSAGE COMES UP ON THE DASH ABOVE THE STEERING WHEEL. THE CAR GETS STUCK IN PARK. I TURN IT OFF AND RESTART IT 30 MINUTES LATER AFTER A COOL OFF PERIOD. THE LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP AND HYUNDAI CUSTOMER CARE LINE CANNOT PROVIDE AN EXPLANATION NOR FIX. HYUNDAI SEEMS UNWILLING AND UNABLE TO RUN THIS ISSUE UP TO THEIR DESIGN ENGINEERS TO FIND OUT WHAT THE LIGHT IS DESIGNED TO ALERT OWNERS AND MECHANICS ABOUT. I AM CONCERNED THAT THE LITHIUM BATTERY MAY BE A PART OF THIS "HYBRID SAFETY" PROBLEM. SINCE HYUNDAI DOES NOT KNOW WHAT THE ALERT MEANS, THEY CANNOT ASSURE ME THAT IT IS NOT THE LITHIUM BATTERY CAUSING THIS ALERT. DEALER CONTACTED HYUNDAI TECH LINE, ENTERED CASE AND "REPAIRED" BY PERFORMING MULTI-ECV UPDATES VERSION #2 PER TSB#13FL004; RECALIBRATED RWOLVER AND EC PRESSURE. THE CAR WOULD NOT GO OVER 5 MPH. I PULLED OFF OF THE EXPRESSWAY AS BEST I COULD. I THEN SHUT THE ENGINE DOWN. I RESTARTED THE ENGINE AND THE WARNING WAS GONE. I TOOK SIDE ROADS HOME, BUT THE WARNING DID NOT RETURN. THE TOTAL FAILURE OF ENGINE POWER WAS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. I TOOK THE CAR IN TO THE DEALER ON 4/21/14. THEY HAVE NOT RETURNED IT TO ME. AS OF TODAY 4/24/14. I HAD TAKEN IT TO A DEALER AND CALLED A SERVICE DEPARTMENT BUT NONE OF THEM COULD EXPLAIN WHY IT MIGHT BE HAPPENING AND I COULD NOT MAKE THE ISSUE REPEAT ONCE I GOT IT TO THE DEALER. ON SATURDAY I WENT TO DRIVE MY CAR, PULLED OUT AND WAS GOING ABOUT 40 MPH ABOUT 2 MIN AFTER I HAD STARTED THE CAR AND ALL OF A SUDDEN MY FOOT WAS TO THE FLOOR, THE RMP WAS ALL THE WAY UP TO RED AND MY CAR WAS SLOWING DOWN! I PULLED OVER TURNED THE CAR OFF AND STARTED IT AGAIN, I PULLED OUT AGAIN AND IT BEGAN TO DO THE SAME THING BUT WHEN I HIT THE BRAKES THE CAR LURCHED FORWARD WORSE THAN EVER BEFORE. I PULLED INTO A GAS STATION CUT THE CAR OFF AND GOT OUT TO LET MY BOYFRIEND TRY IT (HE HAD BEEN FOLLOWING ME IN HIS CAR AND DID NOT KNOW WHAT WAS WRONG). WHEN HE GOT IN TO TRY IT HE TRIED TO PUT IT IN REVERSE AND IT WOULD NOT SHIFT AT ALL. IT WAS LIKE IT WAS STILL IN PARK, BUT WHEN HE TRIED TO PUT IT BACK IN PARK THE CAR RESPONDED AS THOUGH HE HAD SHIFTED IT. OBVIOUSLY SOMETHING WAS VERY WRONG WITH THE TRANSMISSION. WE CALLED THE 24 HOUR ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AND GOT TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP. THEY MECHANICS SPENT ALL DAY TAKING IT A[ART AND COULD NOT FIND THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM. THE SENIOR MECHANICS CAME IN ON MONDAY AND SAID I WOULD NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION, THAT THE EXISTING TRANSMISSION WAS "ALL BURNED UP" THEY CLAIM THIS IS A RARE INTERNAL PROBLEM AND THAT A NEW TRANSMISSION WILL FIX THE ISSUE. ALL OF THIS WAS COVERED UNDER MY WARRANTY BUT IT COULD HAVE CAUSED MAJOR PROBLEMS HAD I BEEN ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN THIS HAPPENED! THE SENIOR MECHANICS CAME IN ON MONDAY AND SAID I WOULD NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION, THAT THE EXISTING TRANSMISSION WAS "ALL BURNED UP" THEY CLAIM THIS IS A RARE INTERNAL PROBLEM AND THAT A NEW TRANSMISSION WILL FIX THE ISSUE. pulling into traffic the car quit, leaving me starring down the oncoming traffic. i was able to coast to the side and get it restarted. this happened twice during the same day. it will also only charge the batteries to 50%, and sometime the car won't operate on only battery power. this is a potential very serious item they need to address, or start returning money to the owners. i will not drive the car until this is fixed. it is a dangerous car, never knowing when it will quit. i have since discovered this is a common problem with the sonata hybrid.

while slowly moving downhill, on the freeway, during rush hour traffic, i attempted to change lanes and accelerated quickly. the switch from hybrid to gas engine interface only caused the engine to rev (increase rpm) without any gear being engaged. i quickly let off the peddle and depressed it again. it then engaged the transmission, narrowly averting an accident. this has happened 5-6 times since purchasing this car when traveling slowly and then trying to get a burst from the gas engine. i spoke with the dealership, and took it in for a check per their recommendation. they found nothing and could not reproduce it, although they did not try the same circumstance. they only attempted to stop and accelerate at which i said they wouldn't get it to happen that way.

tl* the contact owns a 2012 hyundai sonata hybrid. the contact stated that while driving 10 mph, the hybrid brake system failed warning lamp illuminated and when he attempted to engage the brakes, the pedal went all the way to the floor. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not offer any assistance. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 1,300...updated 03-13-13 *bf the dealer was able to pulled a brake booster code, but since the code was no longer active, no repairs were made.

proceeded to back out of parking space. brakes began making loud grinding noise. pulled back into parking space when brakes failed. brake failure light and chime was activated. vehicle would not stop and hit the concrete handicap sign stopping the car. previously had problem with navigation unit which was replaced once and ready for second replacement. told service manager we thought it may be electrical related, not defective units. believe the problem with navigation unit is related to the brake failure. after accident, hyundai had automotive engineering consultants examine car. hyundai said there was nothing wrong. however, service manager at dealer said the car had main hydraulic failure and new part was ordered. if nothing was wrong, why was hydraulic unit replaced. hyundai refused to do anything.

my 2012 hyundai sonata hybrid limited is coming up with a warning signal "hybrid safety warning do not drive". this has happened on three separate occasions. the common factor has been that i was driving the car on a 95+ degree day and it happens when i pull in to park after driving for approximately 30 minutes. the car sounds an alarm and the message comes up on the dash above the steering wheel. the car gets stuck in park. i turn it off and restart it 30 minutes later after a cool off period. the local hyundai dealership and hyundai customer care line cannot provide an explanation nor fix. hyundai seems unwilling and unable to run this issue up to their design engineers to find out what the light is designed to alert owners and mechanics about. i am concerned that the lithium battery may be a part of this "hybrid safety" problem. since hyundai does not know what the alert means, they cannot assure me that it is not the lithium battery causing this alert. they simply cannot diagnose it since they cannot make it replicate at the dealership. *js

vehicle will not start. flashing "check brakes" .no foot brake pressure. with the hood up can detect a motor pumping intermittently which i think is the brake power unit. car has not been driven for about a month. no fluids on the ground.

purchased new in mar. 2013, not our first hybrid. car began to have shudder/jerky/rough take off from morning start and first stop sign at end of street. this became more often and worsened. one morning left curb as usual, brakes locked up at stop sign and warning light on dash for brake problem. was able to back car back into curb spot and had towed to dealership. date given was about the towing date. car was in shop around three weeks due to needing new brake module or something that was leaking internally inside brake unit from factory. car also had issue to were the battery would not charge properly. worked correctly when purchased but then would not charge past 50% and usually less than. repairs made and lots of updates and sensor adjustments and we were given car back. sadly it only lasted a few months and had to be towed again. late aug, early sept, the car started to jerk at take off again. i tried just sitting at curb for awhile after starting car to let sensors warm up. this seemed to help for short time. problem worsened again until wife complained. i drove full time and it had gotten worse to bad and all the time. bad acceleration, like brakes not letting off. last straw! nov 1st 2013, car jerked and shuddered at take off, brakes locked up solid at stop sign, locked up again at second stop sign, entering traffic to get back home ... car stopped dead in middle of left hand turn in middle of highway!! fully loaded log truck coming at me passenger side. took 2-3 hard stomps on accelerator peddle to get car moving, gas engine finally revved high but car just crawled forward!!! thankfully the truck had started braking as soon as he saw car hesitate in street and car crawled forward enough that i did not get hit. but that grill filled the entire passenger window. car towed to shop again on mon 4th am. called on 5th, huge software update, but no guaranty !?!??

electrical smell like melting plastic wiring: first incident as noted above; 2nd incident on 1/29/2013, mileage 9227-on vehicle start up (engine warm as it was after earlier driving) same hot, melting wire type smell coming through climate control dash vents; 3rd incident on 4/12/2013-mileage 12,353-hot burning smell through heater vents occurring on/after climbing steep hill for a mile or so; 4th incident-4/16/2013, mileage 12538, location of incident same as 3rd incident, same hill climb, same smell occurring during drive. reported to dealer. could not be duplicated during service appt. no further incidents of burning smell to current date: 01/13/2014. cruise control and transmission gear selection issues: first incident: around 1/20/2013; subsequent incidents periodically since then to current date of 01/14/2013: when on cruise control, speeds set at anywhere (40-60 mpg for these incidents), on coasting down or flat terrain transmission will shift from 6th (high) gear down to 3rd or 4th and hold that gear with engine rev ving accordingly, until i either manu-shift it back up to 6th, or, perhaps after 10 or more seconds it might shift into higher gear on its own. i have deliberately not disengaged cruise control during these incidents to continue to assess the condition. related to this is occasional excessive acceleration as car can drop (on cruise) to below set speed as in a dip in the road, and then applying speed to get back to set speed, but, it will accelerate aggressively to as much as 10 mph above set speed before cruise control mode 'back' off the acceleration action, making the car feel like it is 'taking off'. this can happen often on certain roads at same transition points from coasting downward into a dip in the road, then (cruise control) reapplying power to get the car backup to speed. rest will be sent in a second submission following this.

electrical smell like melting plastic wiring: first incident as noted above; 2nd incident on 1/29/2013, mileage 9227-on vehicle start up (engine warm as it was after earlier driving) same hot, melting wire type smell coming through climate control dash vents; 3rd incident on 4/12/2013-mileage 12,353-hot burning smell through heater vents occurring on/after climbing steep hill for a mile or so; 4th incident-4/16/2013, mileage 12538, location of incident same as 3rd incident, same hill climb, same smell occurring during drive. reported to dealer. could not be duplicated during service appt. no further incidents of burning smell to current date: 01/13/2014. cruise control and transmission gear selection issues: first incident: around 1/20/2013; subsequent incidents periodically since then to current date of 01/14/2013: when on cruise control, speeds set at anywhere (40-60 mpg for these incidents), on coasting down or flat terrain transmission will shift from 6th (high) gear down to 3rd or 4th and hold that gear with engine rev ving accordingly, until i either manu-shift it back up to 6th, or, perhaps after 10 or more seconds it might shift into higher gear on its own. i have deliberately not disengaged cruise control during these incidents to continue to assess the condition. related to this is occasional excessive acceleration as car can drop (on cruise) to below set speed as in a dip in the road, and then applying speed to get back to set speed, but, it will accelerate aggressively to as much as 10 mph above set speed before cruise control mode 'back' off the acceleration action, making the car feel like it is 'taking off'. this can happen often on certain roads at same transition points from coasting downward into a dip in the road, then (cruise control) reapplying power to get the car backup to speed. rest will be sent in a second submission following this.

"it would appear that the cruise control/power train computer program has some errors in it or needs updating to correct the problem of excessive acceleration when re-attaining a set speed from a coast down that causes the car to go below the set speed before the sensors detect and activate the acceleration required to bring the car back up to the set speed. then is 'shoots' the car forward at full power-like unintended acceleration might- and send it up to as much as 10 mph above the 'then set' speed i have desired. if there is a corner at the end of the rise, the car can feel out of control during this acceleration as it is at full power during the acceleration phase. the transmission also down shifts 2 or 3 gears during this process which aggravates the fierce acceleration feeling. these incidents have been reported both to the hyundai dealer and to hyundai. hyundai says, take it to our dealer; the dealer says they can find nothing wrong as no dash warning lights are ever showing and their electronic scanning brings up nothing of any kind of problem. this may or may not be exclusive to the sonata hybrid with cruise control and since many people do not use cruise control on winding rural roads, they may not/never experience the same sensation that can happen often to me. i can deal with it. nhtsa should keep this report on file in case other cruise control or acceleration issues with hyundai vehicles surface as my report is precisely defined as to what type of road condition it occurs on and what happens. thank you.

slowly accelerating up a small hill at approximately 3 to 5 mph. began to break at top of hill which is at the exit of a very busy road. suddenly car began to accelerate without my foot on the gas or on cruise. i had foot on the brake when this happened. i had to break harder to avoid being hit by 4 lane traffic. car moved about a foot after brake was applied harder.

i was driving south on interstate 79 in pennsylvania near the wexford exit. it was approximately 8:15am. no one else was around me and the sunroof on my vehicle exploded. that is the only way i can describe it. nothing hit it, no rock, nothing from an overpass nothing. i was in the open and no vehicle was in front of me or behind me. it was extremely frightening. the noise it made was the loudest noise i had ever heard. i did research on this happening before and it seems to have happened to other drivers with the same car. i haven't found any recalls. i do not feel safe in the care any longer.

the warning signal "hybrid safety warning do not drive" appeared and i could not move my car. the day before i drove my car with no problem and then when i was about to drive this morning i received this warning. my car had to be towed to a local dealership so they can run diagnostics. from reading other complaints, it seems that this is happening to other sonata hybrids. i am worried about the lithium battery and not sure what is causing this. i have only had the car for a year and it might be time to look for a new one.

similar to nhtsa id number: 10546231 - "check brakes" ...2012 hyundai sonata hybrid will not start or move (aug 2013). from parked position, turned on vehicle (stepped on brake and depressed electronic ignition). loud chimes occurred with message "check brakes". no brakes were on, car would not move forward/reverse. connected to bluelink who could detect "alert". car towed to dealer. dealer saw code c1604 in computer log but by then car was able to start, could not duplicate problem. dealer contacted hyundai tech line, entered case and "repaired" by performing multi-ecv updates version #2 per tsb#13fl004; recalibrated rwolver and ec pressure. it's now 8-months later (apr 2014) and the exact same problem is occurring again.

i was driving at about 55 mph on the expressway with the cruse control engaged. suddenly there was a loud dinning and the panel on the dash flashed "hybrid safety warning", "brake failure". the care would not accelerate. i was able to pull over onto the shoulder. the car would not go over 5 mph. i pulled off of the expressway as best i could. i then shut the engine down. i restarted the engine and the warning was gone. i took side roads home, but the warning did not return. the total failure of engine power was a very dangerous situation. i took the car in to the dealer on 4/21/14. they have not returned it to me. as of today 4/24/14.

when the car was started a beeping alarm sounded with a warning stating that there was a brake failure. yellow triangle with black exclamation point also warning me not to drive. brakes had severe grinding when trying to move. this is the second time that this has happened to the car. first time was approximately a year ago. i was originally told then that there may have been a hydraulic problem but then told that it was a bad connection somewhere. waited approximately 15 minutes and car starts with out a problem. my fear is that the brakes will lock or fail while i'm driving on the highway.

i had been experiencing a hesitation when accelerating, a lurch when hitting the brake as well as sometimes when accelerating as though the gears could not shift properly. this did not occur as often if the car was out of blue drive. this had been going on for about 4 months. i had taken it to a dealer and called a service department but none of them could explain why it might be happening and i could not make the issue repeat once i got it to the dealer. on saturday i went to drive my car, pulled out and was going about 40 mph about 2 min after i had started the car and all of a sudden my foot was to the floor, the rmp was all the way up to red and my car was slowing down! i pulled over turned the car off and started it again, i pulled out again and it began to do the same thing but when i hit the brakes the car lurched forward worse than ever before. i pulled into a gas station cut the car off and got out to let my boyfriend try it (he had been following me in his car and did not know what was wrong). when he got in to try it he tried to put it in reverse and it would not shift at all. it was like it was still in park, but when he tried to put it back in park the car responded as though he had shifted it. obviously something was very wrong with the transmission. we called the 24 hour roadside assistance and got towed to the nearest dealership. they mechanics spent all day taking it a[art and could not find the source of the problem. the senior mechanics came in on monday and said i would need a new transmission, that the existing transmission was "all burned up" they claim this is a rare internal problem and that a new transmission will fix the issue. all of this was covered under my warranty but it could have caused major problems had i been on the highway when this happened!

when accelerating from a stop, the vehicle takes excessively long time to go from 0-25 mph, so much so , that when merging into traffic it has unpredictable acceleration. at various times i would step on the gas pedal and sometimes it would have a 3-5 second delay before going forward. when it finally accelerates sometimes it has a popping sound and often the car lurches. i have brought it in 3 times for hyundai to find the problem but each and every time they have said they were not able to find anything wrong with the car.

back up camera takes 10 to 15 seconds before coming on (average 12 seconds), audio on radio, cd player and iphone music goes out occasionally, gps has failed to operate on occasion
