AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOW

while on vacation in michigan, my spouse and i were hit by a drunk driver. we were traveling north bound on us 127 at 35mph, crossing over addison rd (in the town of addison) when the other driver crossed the road hitting us. (he was arrested at the scene of the accident.) he struck us on the driver¿s side and dented the front and rear door to the point that neither door could be opened, and buckled the rear fender. the impact was severe enough that it blew out all the driver¿s side windows, blew out the passenger rear tire, bent the b-pillar on the driver¿s side, and ripped the top hinge completely off the driver¿s side rear door. it also creased the top middle driver's side of the roof. none of the side curtain airbags deployed and we felt that they should have. as a result of the accident, my spouse incurred a bump, 2 ½¿ in diameter by ½¿ tall, on the back right rear side of her head.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

we purchased the vehicle new in april of 2008. the vehicle abruptly looses engine power, shuts down and stops. this has now occurred three times. on june 6th the vehicle broke down in traffic. it was towed to the dealer. they repaired a pvc hose that had collapsed. after picking up the vehicle the following day, the same event occurred, stranding us in the middle of a divided, heavily traveled, road. the vehicle was again towed to the dealer for repairs. this time the fuel pump was replaced. after waiting five days for the part to be delivered, i picked up the car once again. my wife had earlier noticed a very strong odor of gasoline after we brought it home. on june 19th i was out running errands with my children. the vehicle, again shut down in the middle of the road. i again had the vehicle towed to the dealer. the service manager then informed me he had just found out hyundai was having a problem with the fuel systems on their 2008 elantra models. i then called hyundai customer service to file a complaint about the vehicle. i also ask the representative to check on any recalls or campaigns against my vehicle. after checking his system he informed me that there were no campaigns or recalls registered against the car. so far this dangerous event has occurred three times in the past few days. i am very concerned for the safety of my family when we use this vehicle. so far the collapsed pvc hose and fuel pump have been replaced without correcting the problem. i just received a call from the dealership that the vehicle had no gasoline in it. i explained to the service manager that when the vehicle shutdown, the vehicle was registering 3/4 tank. now they are checking other problems with the fuel system. i have no confidence in the vehicle. i am deeply concerned that they are unable determine the defect with the vehicle. i am also deeply concerned that if i have to use this vehicle again it will shutdown again and i or a family member may be injured.

my husband and i bought 2 brand new 2008 hyundai elantra gls pzev engines on june 6, 2008. on july 2, 2008 with less than 400 miles on my husband's car he stopped in the middle of a highway going 55 miles an hour and because of him being in the left hand land there ended up a 3 car accident. my husband did not get hit, but in order to avoid him a car swerved, got rear-ended and pushed into an 18 wheeler on rte 24 in millburn nj. there is a police report because of this. it turns out hyundai know there is a fuel pump problem. our service manager told us after road side assistant towed my husband's elantra up from nj to goshen ny. the service manager also said hyundai is aware of this problem but are not ordering a recall to have the 2008 fuel pumps changed. we called hyundai to find out why there is no recall and they said our service manager was lying about the fuel pumps. but at the same time they said korea stopped making the fuel pumps and are re-designing a new one. to date they have no idea when the fuel pumps will be shipped from korea. but they are still denying there is a problem. if you go to www.edmunds.com and then click on carspace discussion and type in 2008 hyundai elantra you will see people are getting stranded all over the us. hyundai can't fix the problem but yet they are leaving these unsafe cars on the road. we had ours less than a month. my service manager said the fuel pumps are going from 5 miles to 1500 miles and that hyundai does not fix them till they go. my husband was almost killed on july 2, 2008 due to the fuel pump. i have less than 200 miles on my car and any day my car too can have the same thing happen. please do something. hyundai won't. all they do si tow you to your hometown and our nearest dealer because they know there is a problem. we have a police report showing my husband's car just stopped and it is the fuel pump and it is not only happening to us, it is a major problem with the 2008 hyundai elantra's.

a week after purchasing my brand new 2008 hyundai elantra my car cut off in the middle of the road and failed to start. i luckily was able to eventually get it started in lieu of waiting a hour in the heat at rush hour for the roadside assistance. the car sputtered to the dealeship where i got a loaner. i was called today and told it was the fuel pump. i then decided to research the issue because a brand new car should not be shutting down in the middle of the road. i could not find anything from hyundai acknowledging the issue. after reading this website( http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f14ffd5) i realized this is a common issue facing new elantra owners that needs to be addressed!

i purchased a brand-new, 2008 hyundai elantra gls on july 8. i drove the vehicle for about 100 miles from the time i drove off the lot through the end of the 24-hour new ownership period. about 24-25 hours after i bought the car, the vehicle lost power during a typical left-hand turn that i made while pulling out into an intersection. the car had about 125 miles on it. the car lost complete power in the middle of the intersection. the vehicle malfunctioned at about 5:00 pm on wednesday, july 9. i had to place the vehicle in park and restart it (still in the middle of the intersection during the malfunction). i drove the car to the nearest hyundai dealer after not being able to get towing assistance through hyundai. the hyundai service department ran tests on it for two days. they found a "misfire code on cylinder 1", but could not find how to repair the problem. the car has been transferred back to the dealer i purchased it from. it has been in the shop from wednesday, july 9 at 8:56pm until today. the car poses a danger to me and others. the vehicle lost complete power in the middle of the intersection while i was trying to drive in normal conditions. had this happened on a busier road, i may have been hit by oncoming traffic.

i've 2008 elantra se automatic with 5400 miles on it. yesterday my wife was driving from boston to upstate after finishing my younger one's treatment at bch. and half way through she stopped at a rest area. after pulling out from rest area the car started decelerating and it was feeling as if car was trying to shift gear but having issues. it reached up to speed of 60-65 and after that no matter how much gas she applies it wont go any further but started to decelerate. luckily she was able to pull over on side and called hra to get car towed to nearest dealership. just hour ago got call back from dealership stating it was issue with fuel pump and they have replaced it and car is ready for pickup. this is first time this failure happen while she was driving. we have felt couple of times while driving like car with has some kind of thrust (probably trying to change gear in automatic transmission). but this was first time when it wont take anymore gas after pushing gas pedal. it is serious issue and manufacturer needs to be made aware of it or should take some action against manufacturer.

purchased brand new 2008 hyundai elantra june 5, 2008. since purchasing the car it broke down within 30 days with the check engine light coming on and the engine losing power. the dealership replaced the oxygen sensor and part of the exhaust because the sensor was seized up inside it. within 2 days of getting the car back the check engine light came on again and the car lost power and the engine was rough. the first time it happened was in heavy traffic and during a left hand turn into oncoming traffic. fortunately, the engine regained power and i was able to avoid an accident. the dealership now plans to replace the fuel pump. however, it is on backorder and we will probably be without the car a total of at least 30 days or more due to these repairs. we have contacted an attorney because we no longer have trust in the safety of the vehicle especially since it will be used to transport our 4 month old to day care every day. we haven't even had the car 60 days yet.

my fiancee and i recently purchased a brand new(had 7 miles on when we got it) 2008 hyundai elantra. in about the third week of ownership, we took a road trip out of state. while returning home, on the ny state thruway, the car began to shake and shudder, and lose speed rapidly. the engine light came on and i pulled over to the shoulder. after about half an hour, i tried to drive again and had the same problems. we were towed off of the thruway, then to a hyundai dealership by hra, where they looked at the vehicle for a morning. the problem was diagnosed as 'bad gas'. we were told to buy a container of dry gas and sent on our way. the car seemed to behave for about 5 days, then the next weekend i ventured out of town again in my still new car. about an hour into my trip, the car started shuddering and shaking on interstate 84. i pulled off at the nearest exit, and the car died completely. i was not in a safe location, so i tried to start it to move the car. it would no longer start. i got towed all the way home at great expense to myself, and brought the car to the dealership where i bought it. after 5 complete days of working on the car, they replaced the fuel pump. i am now reading that other people have had similar problems, sometimes with far worse consequences. i have not yet operated my new car on a highway since the fuel pump replacement, but i plan to tonight, and am quite nervous about it.

on may 26 2008 my wife and i were involved in an accident. another car ran the red light and hit us. my wife and i were injured and our car was totaled. none of the airbags went off on our brand new 2008 hyundai elantra. we were later told by hyundai that passenger airbags don't always go off because of weight variations in some adults. my wife is 5' 4" and her weight is normal for her height. hyundai never told us of this potential problem with airbag deployment. this company should be required to inform the potential buyer limitations involving safety features! many unsuspecting people could be severely injured without this knowledge. also this information should be given to the potential buyer prior to purchasing the vehicle not after! we purchases a second hyundai ( 2008 tucson) and this vehicle has had problems with its passenger airbag - in fact it was during this repair that hyundai informed us of the weight issue involving airbags. updated 01-26-09 *bf updated 01/2609. *jb updated 07/16/10.*jb

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

my 2008 elantra se which i bought in may has had two "episodes" of stalling. the first (od 1100 mi) on july 14 occurred on the freeway and began as a slight hesitation that got progressively worse such that we took the next exit and limped home on back roads. the check engine light came on and the car stalled twice before we finally made it home. the next day i was able to drive it to the dealer about 5 miles away. their diagnosis was a bad oxygen sensor which they didn't have in stock. they said it would be ok to drive the car until the new sensor arrived. it ran fine and 3 days later i took it in to have the sensor replaced. they ran diagnostics again and said the sensor was ok and needn't be replaced. they said maybe it was bad gas or vapor lock and sent me on my way. the car ran fine until this afternoon (aug 5) when it began hesitating (od 1432 mi) on the freeway and once again i took the first exit and limped home, unable to exceed 25 mph, bucking all the way. my wife followed me to the dealer and for the last mile were unable to go over 5 mph (emergency flashers on). we never made it as the elantra shut down completely in rush hour traffic and i had to get out and push into a nearby parking lot. i called hyundai roadside assistance and had the car trucked to the dealer, only about 4 blocks away. i understand nhtsa is investigating 07-08 elantra stalling complaints and wanted to add another data point for your consideration.

purchased a new 2008 hyundai elantra. left the dealership with the new car and after driving about 10 miles, noticed that the car was hesitating and could not increase speed and shift to the next higher gear. the car finally shifted to the final gear and all was well for about 10 more miles; then the car started to slow down to the point where feeding gas was not helping. the car crawled to a stop at a freeway exit (fortunately) and i contacted the dealer. they arranged towing and delivered me a loaner. the fuel pump failed after only 20 miles of driving the new car.

took a 375 mile/ 8 hour trip. new 2008 hyundai elantra w/less than 1800 miles. upon exiting expressway, engine struggled, as if trying to shift to next gear, but bucked & hesitated. after stopped at a red light, proceeded to cross busy intersection. car sputtered and stalled .check engine light came on and stayed on. 5 failed attempts to restart but did after 9 minutes. made it to destination. local hyundai service center closed. forced to attempt trip back next day. had to drive through very heavy traffic - including the george washington bridge, and winding mountain roads in pa. car acted up 3-4 times, each time losing speed, sputtering & bucking. while never actually stalled, could have been catastrophic. acted worse while accelerating - sounded like engine cutting out. dropped it off to dealership where purchased 8/10/08. next day, informed of broken fuel pump. being replaced with a new one - ready today, 8/14/08. after reading so many similar stories on-line, i felt i had to inform you of my incident. i believe there needs to be a recall - especially as there are so many 2008 elantras on the road. had we needed to make an emergency escape of our stalled car, in ny traffic, we would have likely been killed trying to exit, and probably been run over by a tractor trailer had we stayed in the car. we certainly would not have been able to get our crated puppy out of the back seat, as a parent would not be able to rescue a baby in an infant seat. this is a series of tragedies waiting to happen!!!! i will still not feel confident driving my 3 1/2 month old car, as many people continue to have trouble even with replaced parts. i implore you to probe deeper in to this matter and have hyundai correct this problem...before many people become a fatality statistic!

was driving new elantra (1100 miles and 12 days of ownership) on highway when vehicle started sputtering and lost power no matter how much gas i fed it. pulled over and turned off car. restarted vehicle with difficulty and "check engine" light indicating emissions problem came on. car seemed fine until 2-3 miles later when same symptoms (lurching, losing power) recurred.. this happened 2 more times, each time i managed to pull off road, turned off car, let it sit and then took multiple attempts at starting before it engaged and ran very rough, with very little power. intent was to get to a safe place to stop. car was towed to nearest huyndai dealership (i was 150 miles from home) where they initially diagnosed bad gas. but car ran 175 miles on that tank of gas before problem occurred. then they diagnosed bad fuel pump and replaced fuel pump. hyundai roadside assistance was useless -- had to arrange for own tow truck -- hyundai did not offer replacement vehicle or even reimbursement for gas for me to drive back and forth to pick up my dead new car from being repaired 150 miles from home. we've not had further problems (now have 7500 miles on it) but i am on edge expecting another break-down after reading other people's experiences.

have a 08 elantra. after driving it for few miles i had my tpms light went on. i contacted the dealer, he checked and said this may be due to the cold weather. again the next day the light went on. the tire pressures were accurate. dealer ordered a front tpms valve. again after some miles the light started to glow in the panel. unfortunately when i went to the dealer the light went off. the dealer said there is no problem. again the next day morning the light went on. i drive a lot of highway miles, it was always really hard for me to park the car in the emergency stopping area and check what was wrong with my car. dealer again ordered new valve and replaced it (took 3 days). called hyundai left a message with one of the managers. they told if the problem persists they are going to send me a field officer for inspection. but i think my dealer changed all the tpms valves and he said they are recalibrated and i should not be having any problem. after that i stopped traveling highway miles. now i drive in the city and a few days back the light again went on. i need call dealer and hyundai and speak with them. this is a serious issue as tpms says what's wrong with your tire, so if the light goes on we think there is something wrong and we pull our car back and check it. it is really dangerous and also hard to pull car back in a highway(need to search for rest areas). i have all the service papers which have the mileage records in them. sorry to have not posted it.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

i was driving my 2008 elantra when i approached a sharp curve in the road. i applied my brakes and suddenly the cruise control seemed to activate and the car sped up and left the road . i had no control of the brakes or steering. it seemed as if the vehicle froze. i tried to brake and nothing happened, i tried to steer and the wheel was locked. i ran over several street signs. when the car finally stopped by crashing into a tree, the car was off and the key could not be removed. my airbag did go off however my sons side airbag did not. we both sustained minor physical injuries and major emotional injuries. the car was totaled. approximately 5 weeks later i received a recall notice on my vehicle. my car was one of the vehicles with the faulty fuel pump that needed replacement. in the notice it stated that if the fuel pump was not replaced it could cause the vehicle to crash. i began to research the recall and noted several other people that experienced similar difficulties. i also had noticed a strange smell (electrical?) the prior two days of the accident. i have been unable to get any information on whether or not the fuel pump was faulty and it was would it have caused the vehicle to behave in the way it did causing it to crash. the vehicle was disposed of immediately so it was unable to be examined. i do not have the vin # as i no longer have the vehicle. i did however, through the dealership, find out that my vehicle was indeed one of the ones on the recall notice. the problem was first noted in august and the recall began soon after. i was not notified until weeks after the crash.

SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC

i own a 2008 hyundai elantra. about 2 months ago, i went to stop at a red light, and instead of stopping, my car made a grinding sound for 4-6 seconds (like my abs brakes were turning on, but longer) and didn?t stop until it hit the car in front of me (roads were dry & my car was only going about 10 mph). due to the low speed, my car only bumped the car in front and only bumpers were damaged. i immediately took the car into the dealership to have them check my brakes. they told me they couldn?t find anything. two weeks later, i?m driving and go to stop at a red light (different light, roads were dry, going maybe 10-15 mph) and my car again makes the same grinding sound for about 5 seconds before i tried to pump the brakes. after i pressed and released the brakes, the grinding sound stopped and the car stopped. i took it into the dealership again, explained what happened. they looked it over, saw no computer read out, and told me they didn?t think there was a problem and unless they could duplicate it, they couldn?t fix it. i was told to come back if it happens again (at which point they could take my car for 2-3 weeks to test it and see if they could find the problem. (i asked, they would not provide a loaner!) the problem has since happened twice more (once in the rain, once on dry roads, & always when i try to stop while traveling 15mph or less). i did research and found out that apparently it is likely due to a defective abs module (quite a few other people have had a similar problem, although the years and makes differ) and all of them have had the same issue that hyundai refuses to admit there is anything wrong with the module, but they will replace it for about $1500+labor. i live by numerous schools, so i can?t risk having a car that won?t stop (too many small children that like to run in front of cars), & have no choice but to pay to fix it or get a new car, but they should really do something before someone gets killed because the brakes didn't work.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

i would like the us dot nhtsa to investigate the anti-lock braking system (abs) on my 2008 hyundai elantra. it is my understanding that the purpose of an abs is to prevent loss of traction and steering control during an emergency braking situation. during a recent round of winter snow, i found that the system did not shorten my stopping distance and did not prevent the front wheels from losing the ability to control the direction of the car on snow. while attempting to exit interstate highway 465 at a speed of approximately 25 mph, i was unable to decelerate sufficiently in the length of the deceleration lane to make the curve of the cloverleaf and lost the ability to steer the vehicle while the abs was activated. i did some experimenting and found that i could stop in a shorter distance with more control, if i shifted the car into neutral when trying to stop. i also found that i could slow the vehicle better and not lose steering control if i downshifted into a lower gear, than i could using the brakes. i took the vehicle to the hyundai dealer near my home and complained about the abs. they drove the car and told me that no repairs were needed and that the abs performed similarly to other hyundai vehicles. when i advised them that the abs did not allow me to maintain control of the vehicle, the service tech agreed, but stated the vehicle was preforming as designed. i spoke to the service manager when he returned from vacation today and he agreed that the abs did not work like it should, but that replacing parts would not resolve my concerns with the abs. i believe there is a design flaw with this abs as it performs on snow and ice and i am requesting a formal investigation. i have observed the same result of engagement of the abs on wet pavement in the past, but to a lesser degree.

the power steering failed while driving my 2008 hyundai elantra at the speed limit on a 4 lane, non divided highway in rush hour traffic. i was driving my car to work in normal morning rush hour traffic. i was about 7 miles into a normal 10 mile commute. there was no warning. while moving at the speed limit, the steering wheel locked up. my initial thought was that the car had somehow stalled. i rapidly pumped the brakes to slow down and warn other cars. it is a manual transmission, so i depressed the clutch and pressed the accelerator. i heard the engine rev, so i realized it was power steering failure, not a stall. i continued to pumped the brakes and fought with the steering to maintain control. i am old enough to have driven cars that did not have power steering, but steering in this condition was more difficult than that. i slowed the car without incident and managed to pull it into a parking lot. i realized that the parking lot was connected to a side street and was only a block away from the dealer where i purchased the vehicle, so i drove the car onto their lot. the dashboard showed one red light, 'eps". only after stepping out of the car did i realize how shaken up i was, it was probably poor judgment to drive even that one block. i left the car for them to service. from the service write-up: upon insp tech found steering angle sensor is defective. code c1259, & c1290 present. tech replaced sensor & cleared code. oper to mfr spec. the dealership did this under warranty, no charge. they also performed 2 other recalls related to airbags while the car was there. i purchased this car new from this dealer and they are the only ones to ever service it. i have no reason to fault the dealer, i appreciate their work. for the car however, this is a dangerous situation. i had no prior warning of any type that the steering was defective or would fail. it failed while the vehicle was moving. this incident could have had very dire results.

STEERING

this is a follow-up to odi number 10395729, power steering failure on a 2008 hyundai elantra. this second incident occurred three days and 26 miles driven after the initial repair by the dealership. in this case, i was idling in the left hand turning lane of a 6 lane divided highway, waiting in a line of cars for a left-turn green arrow. the steering wheel twitched, tried to rotate really, in my hands, then felt locked. i looked at the dashboard and the red eps light was on. i had researched hyundai eps light problems on the internet since my first incident, and some posters recommended turning off the engine and restarting the car to activate the steering again. i tried this and the eps light did go out when the car restarted, and the feeling of steering wheel control returned. i was able to drive off the highway but got no more than 1/4 mile total before the steering locked again and the eps light was on again. i drifted to the curb and restarted the car again. the steering came back on again, and i proceeded about another 1/4 mile at slow speed before the steering locked again and the eps light reappeared. i restarted the car again and this time was able to drive the last block to my home and pulled to the curb. while idling there, the eps light came on and the steering wheel locked again. i called the dealer for assistance, and they returned my call and told me to call hyundai roadside assistance for a tow. the dealership kept the car several days as they needed to order a part. the work order states '13090 sop part, replace steering column, part # 56310-2h300, shaft c1290 torque sensor abd'. in one month of driving since this repair, i have had no red eps lights, no steering failure. however, the steering wheel does continue to twitch on its own, sometimes while idling, sometimes while moving. i feel the dealership has treated me fairly, but i remain concerned about the long term consequences of this defect.

the rear rotors on my 2008 hyundai elantra had grooves worn in with only a little over 37,000 miles on the car. the brake pads on the right rear were worn almost completely while the brake pads on the left rear had enough material left on them to drive another 15,000 miles. i took the car to a nationally recognized repair center for new pads because my brakes started to squeak.. the certified mechanic showed me the pads and the rotors and stated that it is odd for the pads on one side to be worn out and the pads on the other side to have about a year's worth of pad left. the side where the pads that had a year left on them the rotor had substantial groves. the rotor on the side with the worn pads had less damage. he stated the rotors were probably substandard and they were probably made in a foreign country with substandard materiel. i took the car to the hyundai dealer where i bought the car for their perusal. the supervisor stated that the rotors were worn and the cause was likely a maintenance issue and is not covered under the car's warranty. i contend the problem is defective material and or poor workmenship. i contacted hyundai customer assistance for help. they also stated this is not covered under the warranty. i believe there might be an issue with the rotors on other elantra's on the road today and this issue could cause serious injury or worse if it is not addressed.

driver pulled car out of driveway, drove down block about 40-50 foot, turned car around and pulled up in front of residence, put car in park and driver's air bag deployed. there was no "crash", no potholes on street, no ruts in driveway he turned around in. car was towed to dealer and they claim the computer showed car suffered impact. they also stated car had some marks underneath. if they are claiming the incident was the result of hitting a pothole, wouldn't the air bag have deployed at impact not 3-5 minutes later when car was put in park? also, ironically, this vehicle was brought to the dealer 5 days earlier for the recall repair for the air bag. there were no problems with this vehicle prior to the recall work and the incident. we live on a small dead end street with no potholes and there are no ruts or potholes in front of our house. two neighbors witnessed the incident. the dealer offered up that since the computer says there was impact, they will do nothing for us. they state the recall repair had nothing to do with the air bag deploying when it did. i contacted my insurance company and they sent someone to look at the vehicle. their report states that there are some marks underneath which my local mechanic says most cars that drive on our roads display. the insurance company found no damage to the frame, the radiator or anything else. the cost of fixing the car is estimated at $1793.50. i have a $500.00 deductible and i had to rent a vehicle at my own cost. my husband, thank god, suffered no major injuries. we are terrified to get back in this car. i tote around my grandchildren in this vehicle. i am hoping you can look into this. i would hate for anyone else to go through something like this and maybe not be so lucky as my husband was.

dear madam/sir, my name is [xxx], and along with my husband [xxx] i own an automatic silver hyundai elantra 2008, plate number: [xxx], vin: [xxx]. we purchased the car new, serviced it in a timely fashion, as required, only at hyundai representatives. the car meter currently reads close to 40,000 miles. on january 2nd, 2013 arund 4:15 pm i parked my car on the street, in front of my house, facing uphill, like i usually do. half an hour later a friend arrived, parked her car down the street, facing downhill, 100 feet away from my car, same side of the street. at that time she remembers she saw my car in the same spot i initially parked it. an hour later, as my friend was getting ready to leave, my husband looked over the window and saw my car around 50 feet down the road from my usual parking spot. he initially though that the parking space was occupied when i arrived home, so he handed me the car keys so i can bring the car in front of the house. when i walked with my friend towards her car, we saw that my car has slid down the road around 50 feet, probably pushing my friend's car around 10 feet away from her initial parking location. the front bumper of my car does not have scratches, so it is not likely that my car has been pushed by another car. as a result of the collision the hyundai elantra has a completely damaged rear bumper, with considerable damage to the trunk also. my friends car (a lexus rx, 2012) has the rear bumper damaged. we believe this incident was due to faulty transmission on the hyundai elantra. in past, we had several incidents . at this point i am very concerned about the safety of my car. i drive my daughter in that car, and if the car decides to slide down the road on its own, this puts my baby's life in danger. thanks [xxx] my hyundai case number is [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

while driving in heavy traffic, inching along at low speed for about 1/2 miles; stopping and starting all the way, suddenly during one of these stops, the motor started to rev and the car accelerated on its own. had to brake hard to avoid hitting the car in front of me. about 10 minutes later, while parking the car in a parking space, the same thing happened. i had already stopped and was putting the car in park. i took the car to the local hyundai garage where they did road testing. computer tests showed no codes; so no repairs were made. when the tech line of the manufacturer was contacted on this matter was told that there were no cases relating to this problem on file. have had this problem sporadically since 2010. last reported an acceleration problem to the hyundai garage early in the month of december 2012. no one at hyundai wants to help me.

i had stopped at an intersection. i started to make a left turn and it became extremely difficult to steer. i noticed the eps sensor on the dashboard was on. there was no warning or strange sound. i was probably going 5 mph since, there appeared to be no power in car. i pulled over leaving the vehicle on. i preceded to make my way home. having no real ability to steer the vehicle. i am very fortunate the oncoming traffic was still a good distance from vehicle. i did hear a clicking noise in the steering when i made a left turn. i took into to the dealer in 2011, they we're unable to duplicate the sound. at that time it was under warranty. that is the only warning i could of possibly had there was something unsafe about the vehicle.

ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL

on the morning of april 16th, my 2008 hyundai elantra (84000 miles) started making an unusual sound from the rear right. at roughly the same time, the esc light came on. as i was within miles of a mechanic, i drove the car to the shop to have it put on the lift. once it was on the lift and the weight was off the suspension, there was a loud metallic noise from the right rear. upon inspection, the bolt for the right rear upper control arm had sheered, but the control arm itself was frozen in place by rust against the vehicle body. additional bolts were also frozen in place within the suspension bushings and could not be moved by hand. i called my insurance company, and they recommended the car be towed to a collision shop. when the vehicle was removed from the lift to be towed, the rear passenger side tire collapsed inward against the wheel-well. the vehicle required a flat bed as it could not be towed due to the suspension problem. at the collision shop, it was noted that the majority of the bolts on the rear suspension were rusted, along with the cross-member. the rear cross-member and attached components required replacement. in addition, it was noted the rear driver side tire was misaligned and "badly cupped" despite having been replaced and aligned several months ago.

the gas pedal got "stuck" in the down position while driving, resulting in a problem being able to stop the vehicle. i was going approximately 45-50 mph, passing/merging/accelerating in order to get onto an onramp which curved slightly to go into another main highway. when i pressed on the brakes to slow down a bit for the ramp, nothing happened. my car continued to go at the same speed. i continued to brake, and the car would not slow down. i slid my foot over the gas pedal and could tell it was still completely "down" and making the car accelerate at full capacity. i then glanced down to confirm that the pedal was stuck in the downward position. there was nothing under the pedal, the floor mat was not stuck underneath, nor was it anywhere near where the pedal was pressed down. i clicked my hazards on during the process because since it was an onramp, there was nowhere to pull over. as i continuously pressed on the brakes, the car only slowed down approximately 3-5 mph total, because the gas pedal was stuck all the way down, therefore the brakes were trying to work against the full power of the acceleration. once the passenger realized what was happening, he helped by putting the car in neutral. this helped slow the car, and i then pulled the emergency brake. the car came to a stop in the middle of a main highway onramp. the cars behind me were able to react quick enough to go around and not hit the car. i tried to replicate the problem in order to help diagnose this issue and have more information to tell hyundai. once on a straightaway without other cars nearby, i pressed the gas pedal all the way down, and sure enough i was able to recreate the issue and the pedal got stuck again. upon trying to recreate it a 3rd time, it did not get stuck and seemed to be working properly. but it did get stuck 2 out of the 3 times. it was terrifying to not be able to stop.

the esc off light began on july 22, 2014... on july 24, 2014, as i was driving down a busy street, the vehicle turned off on me while i was slowing down approaching a red light. there is a esc on/off switch, so when i pushed it in, the light turned off when the car was turned back on but not long after driving further, the esc off light came back on. i am definitely concerned about my safety, i live in houston, texas, therefore, driving down a major highway can be very dangerous and highly unsafe if the vehicle decided to turn off on my while i am driving.

STEERING

i turned on the engine just like any other normal morning and it appeared that the wheel was stuck. i turned hard to the left and heard a cracking noise. i further turned the wheel left to merge onto the street, when i realized i had no steering. i proceeded to try and drive and the vehicle stalled and would not let me drive forward. with great effort, i was able to get it back in to park and park it on the curb. i was lucky no one was around, as the stalling and inability to steer was a scary incidence. this issue needs to be a recall as it is very risky to drive the vehicle if you can get it to turn at all ....so far it will only let me drive in reverse and make right hand turns.
