VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

my 2008 honda civic si drive-by-wire throttle keeps the accelerator pedal depressed for a couple of seconds after the accelerator pedal was released. this has caused two near crashes in the first week that i owned the vehicle. i now keep the car parked in the garage due to safety concerns. honda has refused to address this issue for the thousands of civic si owners. the honda civic si's should be recalled as soon as possible.

dec 18, 2007 driving 2008 honda civic lx approx 73 mph on interstate with cruise control engaged. passenger unbuckled seat belt to reach for item in back seat. seat belt disconnect beep sound, and vehicle suddenly began accelerating until cruise control manually canceled as result. after passenger rebuckled, we attempted to replicate following same steps--with same results. thereafter, tried to replicate two or three times, but unable to replicate--i.e., no acceleration.

tl*the contact owns a 2008 honda civic. the contact stated that the head rest is very uncomfortable and causes neck pain. she is only 5'1 and the head rest does not accommodate her height. the vehicle was test driven; however, she did not experience the full affect until after she brought the vehicle home. the head rest is tilted forward and cone shaped. honda stated that there have only been three complaints for this feature. the dealer stated that the shape of the head rest was to prevent whiplash in the event of a crash. the dealer also stated that there was no way to upgrade or adjust the head rest for safety purposes due to liability. the contact stated that the dealer would not take the vehicle back or make any repairs whatsoever. the only deal that the dealer offered was to give her an upgrade of the civic for $10,000 more of what her vehicle was worth. they then offered her a 2008 honda accord that was $6,500 more due to the addendum. the dealer finally offered her a 2007 demo vehicle for $3,000 more. the contact felt that her intelligence was being insulted. the failure mileage was 5 and current mileage was 250. updated 01-29-08. *kb

tl*the contact owns a 2008 honda civic. the bumper is hanging from the vehicle. the inspector from the honda dealer stated that the undercarriage of the vehicle was scraped. he believes the failure occurred when the vehicle came off of the delivery truck. the dealer stated that they never inspected the vehicle and the bumper failure was her fault. the current mileage was 900 and failure mileage was 137.

my 2007 honda civic hybrid has a damaged a/c condenser. according to the dealership a pebble punctured the condenser while driving, so all the freon leaked out and my ac doesn't work. the cost to repair it is $582. i went online and "goggled" this problem and found it has happened to many honda cars and has to do with the placement of the condenser and the fact that honda does nothing to protect or shield it from damage. i want my $582 back!

my 2007 honda civic ran over a piece of tire from a truck. it passed under the car and bent the rear most bracket holding the handbrake cable. it applied the rear brakes causing the vehicle to become difficult to control. the rear brakes overheated and the rear brakes required a major service to restore it to roadworthiness. we contacted honda, they opened a case number but refused to accept there was a design problem and left the resolution to me. i believe this could lead to a nasty accident if the rear wheel brakes locked up and i think the design change required would be simple. if the rear bracket was moved up 1 to 2" i think the problem would be solved. i suggested this the honda but my suggestion was ignored citing they didn't see this problem show up elsewhere.

while being torqued to manufacturer's specifications, i.e., 80 ft. lbs., lug nut stud on driver's side rear tire (hub) snapped off. happened today. this week car will be taken to independent shop to replace stud, check out other studs for imminent failure and replace other defective studs, if any.

this will elaborate on recent complaint of same incident. although tire pressure was equalized while cold to manufacturer's specifications: 32 p.s.i., and alignment was not an issue, car wandered on highway. in order to restore proper handling, lug nuts were retorqued. while being retorqued to manufacturer's specifications, i.e., 80 ft. lbs., lug nut stud on driver's side rear tire (hub) snapped/sheared off. this week car will be taken to independent shop to replace stud, check out other studs for imminent failure and replace other defective studs, if any.

i purchased a 2008 honda civic on april 16, 2008. i have heard a rattling in the seat belt tensioner since i first got the car. i brought it to the dealership today and they told me that the honda tech line said it couldn't be fixed. they said they drove two other like vehicles and it made the same noise. i would like to have the seatbelt tensioner replaced - i am fearful that the belt will malfunction and is not safe - it is rattling for a reason and i think there is a design flaw if other cars of same make and model are doing it too.

the car intermittently does not stop causing it to proceed into intersections. the brakes do not hold the car from being pulled into traffic. rammed car on exit ramp causing $4,500.00 damage.

i took my 2008 honda civic into the dealer because the air conditioning wasn't working. they said it wasn't working because there was a hole in the ac condenser and that this wasn't covered by warranty. they indicated that this was a problem with hondas but that this design defect wasn't covered by warranty. they could not guarantee that this would not happen again and again due to the defect but that it would not be covered under warranty. this would seem to me to be a good reason for a recall to fix the design problem if the ac unit is so vulnerable to puncture given its location and lack of protection from road debris.

tl*the contact owns a 2008 honda civic. while driving 35 mph, the contact heard a howling noise coming from the front end of the vehicle. he took the vehicle to the tire shop to have the tires rotated, which did not remedy the issue. the contact went to the dealer and they test drove the vehicle. the dealer stated that the wheel bearing was defective and failed. the wheel bearing was replaced on the passenger side; however, the contact was informed that the wheel bearing on the driver side was also defective and needed to be replaced. the dealer ordered the second bearing for the driver's side repair. the manufacturer had not been notified. the current mileage was approximately 5,900 and failure mileage was approximately 5,700. updated 07/29/08 *bf updated 07/29/08

purchased 4th honda civic this year. love them! however i also (after i got home with the car) noticed how uncomfortable the head rest was. i also had some neck strain after i got to work because of the position it put my head and neck in. i was unable to drive it for long distances so my husband made a minor adjustment to the head rest. now it is perfect. i hope they will correct this in future hondas.

the hush panel under the instrument panel has started to droop, causing it to come in contact with the top of my shoe when i move my foot from the accelerator pedal to the brake pedal. the hush panel was not designed with enough retaining clips to avoid this interference.

problem with cruise control. with cruise on car has a tendency to speed up and slow down and speed up again. does not maintain set speed but will read set speed. it has a habit of speeding up on turns and straight a ways. must use brakes to slow down and then reset speed.

i have owned a brand-new '08 honda civic lx four-door sedan, mt for approximately 4-5 weeks. i drive my car 5 days a week, roundtrip each day 140 miles. about 3 weeks in, i suffered excruciating neck/shoulders/back pain. i adjusted the seat all kinds of different ways and moved the headrest up and down, to no avail. finally, i ripped the headrest completely out and then i drove pain free for about a week. now, the pain is back, even though the headrest is still facing backward. i have contacted my dealership but haven't heard back yet about a solution. i'm still in severe neck pain, and i currently have no whiplash protection, should i crash, because the head rest is tilted too far back. the forward-jutting headrests are supposed to be a whiplash safety feature, but what good is it if i remove it because i can't tolerate the pain i'm in every day? there is a ton of internet chatter out there about this problem. thank you.

tl*the contact owns a 2008 honda civic. the contact heard a loud clunking noise whenever she made a left turn. the noise grew louder and began to affect the vehicle when making right turns. the noise could be heard from both the interior and exterior of the vehicle. the dealer replaced the left front struts and upon leaving the dealer, the noise continued. the dealer was unable to determine the cause of the failure; however, they called the manufacturer for further assistance. the manufacturer advised the contact to call a different dealer. the second dealer stated that the cv shaft needed to be replaced. the failure mileage was 1,000 and current mileage was 13,510.

tl*the contact owns a 2008 honda civic. on september 10, 2008, the contact noticed that her seat belt would not latch. the following morning, she was able to fasten the seat belt, but the seat belt warning light kept illuminating on the instrument panel. while driving at an unknown speed, the warning chime sounded and then stopped shortly afterwards. she has not taken the vehicle to the dealer for repair. the current mileage was 20,250 and failure mileage was 20,198.

apparently a rock hit my a/c condenser after owning my 2008 honda civic hybrid for less than two months. it created a hole in the condenser and now the a/c doesn't work. honda wants ~$600 to fix and they refuse to cover this under warranty. this is despite the extremely new nature of the car and how incredibly easy it was to locate many honda owners with the exact same problem.

both sun visors on my 2008 honda civic ex sedan swing down suddenly and unexpectedly. this abrupt malfunction blocks view of both the road and the rear view mirror, creating an extremely hazardous driving situation. when they swing down, efforts to return them to the ?up? (never have been deployed) position are completely useless. both swing down again and refuse to remain up and out of the way. the visors are made up of several plastic panels. at least one of the panels in each visor seems to have warped due to normal summer temperatures. it appears that deformation is what prevents the visor from working normally. it is just a matter of time before this causes a serious accident.

i had my tires rotated according to schedule. i left the dealer and immediately heard a very loud roaring sound from my tires. i returned to the dealer and was told the tires were not wearing evening. my vehicle only had 12,000 miles. i was later told that other honda civics had a control arm problem which caused the same problem but was told my vehicle was not included in this service bulletin. however, my vehicle is displaying the very same symptoms.

small pebble hit condenser on my 2008 honda civic while driving unbeknownst to me. the dealer says it has caused a small hole in condenser and has to be replaced. on examination damage is not readily noticeable. the car is only 3 mos. old. i feel this is a design flaw, and have noted that many others have complained about the same problem, so it quite common. i think honda should address the problem and fix it, and have it covered by warranty.

at 13000 miles my rear tires on a 4 month old car were so worn , (flat spots) that in the near future i feel they would be a future road hazard possibly causing an accident or death. in my little bit of research on internet this is a on going problem for years. dealer replaced my back tires after several trips to different repair,tire shops. even when some shops put it in writing that excessive wear was due to mechanical failure they still said nothing wrong with car. i have a feeling i'll be back to dealer before 5000 mi more for same thing. this is truly and unsafe situation for people when if they listen to dealer and they tell them nothings wrong when clearly something is causing the uneven wear.

uneven and unusual tread wear on the inside part of the rear tires. this causes the vehicle to handle erratically at times. this condition appears to have started several months ago and has gotten worse. this vehicle has received regularly scheduled service. there is a service bulletin 08-001 dated 02/08 on 2006 civic model. has this model changed over the past two years? these models appear pretty much identical.

sun visors on 2008 honda civic exl malfunction. within a couple of months after purchasing the car- the sun visors started to malfunction. seemed to be caused by interior heat in the vehicle. they (both left and right) finally failed to where once they were in the down position you could not putt them back in the stow position with out using two hands - need not say much about the safety hazard here and with following. also, from stow position they keep falling down on their own accord. contacted the dealer - since the car was under warranty they replaced them. i told the dealer that it was a design flaw probably caused by expanding plastic parts due to heat. told the dealer that the new replacement would probably do the same thing with time and honda corp should be notified. not sure they notified honda of the potential problem or safety concern.

i bought my honda civic exl in march of 2008. after 9 months (approx 18 k miles) of use i am finding i have to replace my tires due to unusual wear. i took the car to a tire dealership who told me that there was no warranty except defects for oem tires on this car and directed me back to the dealership where i purchased the car. i had the tire place rotate and rebalance the tires � the problem worsened to the point where the vehicle severely vibrated (low and high speeds)and made noise. i took the car to the honda dealership where purchased and who said the tires in question were worn and had flat places probably due to skidding (this car has never been �skidded�) and that if i had issues with the tires i should go to bridgestone (the oem for el400). i went to firestone (bridgestone dealer) and was told it was the car causing the problems. i went back to the dealer and after much discussion and getting nowhere convinced them to check alignment and suspension. they did and found the rear tire alignment off. they aligned the rear tires (the front tire alignment had no issues) and sent me on my way with no obligation to replace the worn/defective tires. i replaced the tires at my own expense to avoid potential hazard of keeping the car on the road and fearful for safety of myself, my family, and others. new car � new tires in 9 months � this ain�t right. i was shocked at the fact that the oem tires had no mileage warranty and were only warranted by the tire manufacturer for defects. i was also concerned why the honda dealership would not provide such information to the consumer at the time of sale. i have grave concern that some folks who cannot afford new tires after 9 months or sooner will continue to use and drive their car in this unsafe condition. after research i found out that a similar problem existed on 06 and 07 honda�s � honda put out a service bulletin so stating with a repair offer. also found out others with 2008 civics are having same problem as i have.

drivers sun visor on 2008 civic ex coupe suddenly swings down creating hazard especially at night. this visor is useless and refuse to remain up. it appears several plastic pieces inside the visor are popped out making impossible to function correctly. this seems to be a consistent problem with 2008 civics. at my scheduled service i plan on talking to the dealer about problem and correction.

my 2008 honda civic lx drivers window shattered with no provocation. i was driving on i40 at 7:45 pm on 11/17 and i hit a bump in the road. upon hitting it the drivers side window implode. there were no other vehicle around, nothing hit the glass, just blew in. i had a witness to the even in my car.

my 2008 civic hybrid has a power train issue. often, when accelerating, the car jumps or jerks. it is almost like you accelerate then brake then accelerate and brake over and over while your foot is only on the gas. this happens regardless of the vehicle�s temperature or the weather conditions and happens periodically. it may happen once a week, once every two months or three times a day. i contacted the dealership and i have an appointment to get it fixed. the service department seemed to know exactly what i was talking about and said the problem is under warranty. the service representative also mumbled something about a recall. i have not been notified of a recall and this website is not showing one either. just a heads up for other hybrid owners.

tl*the contact owns a 2008 honda civic. the contact stated that she owned a 2006 honda civic and had constant issues with the rack and pinion and power steering. she took the vehicle to the dealer and they replaced the entire part of the steering system containing the rack and pinion. a month and a half later, the failure recurred and she decided to trade the 2006 in for a 2008, in hopes that the failure would be resolved. two months later, at 3,500 miles, the power steering was leaking just like the 2006 honda civic. the parts were replaced on the 2008. the dealer stated that there was a three week back order for this particular part that keeps failing. the failure mileage was 3,500. updated 01/29/09.*lj updated 01/30/09. *jb

i just purchased fully a 2008 honda civic from honda of bowie in bowie maryland on aug 22, 2008. i went to charlotte, nc for the holidays. after parking the car i had to move it 5 feet. i did not drive the car for 3 days thereafter. i proceeded to start the car on the 3rd day and it would not start. i let the car sit and then tried to start it again. the lights started to dim and it would not start. i called bowie and talked to bill. he instructed me to called honda in charlotte and have it towed and honda would "eat the cost". i did as instructed. i towed it and the service rep tried to start it and said this may be serious. the mechanic put the pedal to the floor, a cloud of black foul-smelling odor came out and the car started up. i called bowie on january 2, 2009, no one was available, they say, to speak with me, and mr. williamson would not call me back. i was told that this incident was not covered under the warranty. this was purchased as a brand new car. i do not fill safe in this car!!! i am in the process of trying to obtain my money back from this dealer. i am a young woman that travels alot and because i, as a young woman on the road, was not able to diagnosis my car with dimming lights and not starting up, i had to pay the towing which was suppose to be under the warranty. there needs to be an investigation to see whether any other "08 civic from honda of bowie has had this problem. if not, i am reporting the first.

front driver window came out of plastic window channel (seal) during closing and would not seal properly. temporary fix: could manually push/pull window into channel during closing, but watch your fingers! occurred at approximately 6000km. i believe root cause was faulty switch which didn't provide signal to window motor to stop if window closed. after window closed, if button activated, could hear motor still pushing window glass up. eventually, this would cause window glass to damage channel (seal) dealer replaced window regulator,seal and glass under warranty.

POWER TRAIN

while driving at various speeds from local road to highway use, attempts to accelerate moderately cause car to jerk forward and backward, and car does not accelerate properly. engine seems fine and seems as if power is transmitted intermittently to wheels. occurs every now and then, approximately 5 times over 10 month period (first occurrence listed below). taking foot off gas, and then re-accelerating usually restores normal operation. the model is the honda civic hybrid, so believe it is slippage in the cvt (continuously variable transmission).

i am the person who filed consumer complaint: odi case number: 10252727. i went to the appointment and they said that they had to see the car jerking. as i stated, it happens periodically. they ran diagnostics, said nothing was wrong and sent me on my way. also for everyone's knowledge. my "hybrid" is currently getting an average of 27.2 mpg.

i have a 2008 honda civic with only 18,000 miles on the bridgestone turanza el 400. tires. i noticed that the rear tires were getting very loud and then had them rotated to the front, which made the front of the car vibrate from the thumping so much that i had to replace the tires. i took the car into d'ella honda of queensbury, ny and they advised that the tires were cupped and that this was my fault. did not want to hear any more about it and d'ella will not respond to me. i also advised that going down the highway and hitting wet pavement the car would slip on the pavement. really just a unsafe tire. having to replace tires from a new car at 18000 miles is total bull. either the tires or the honda civic still have a problem in 2008. no help from honda, d'ella honda or bridgestone. will stay away from all three in the future. $600.00 for new tires so far.

my 2008 honda civics lx, had my first tire rotation completed by my dealer and was told that all 4 tires were cupped. i have not owned the car a year. i purchased this car 05-31-08. i have less than 11,000 miles on this car. the car now vibrates and roars when driving down the street. the 2006-7 civics had problems with the rear suspension which caused the cupping damage to the tires. i have the same problem and the dealer said it was due to lack of rotation. they have serviced the car since owned and never said there was any problem with the tires. two weeks after my last service all tires are damaged and the car shakes when driving. it is very loud and feels unstable on the ground. the dealer has yet to take action to resolve this case.

there has been no wreck or fire---this is a complaint for your tsb compilations....we have an 08 civic lx: the transmission shifts roughly, and with delays. slowing down and then re accelerating lightly causes a delay----as if the transmission/control module can't figure out which gear to get into--- and then a rough engagement. from d to reverse, there is a harder engagement than should be. it's as if there is a problem with the control module or the torque converter. my dealer says all these things are normal in a civic auto transmission. we have an 07 accord exl and it has none of these problems, nor did any other vehicles i've had in the past with a.t. it seems there should be some control module reprogramming or software patch for this transmission. also, as a safety problem, it is harder to see out of this windshield during rain, esp. at night, than any car i've driven. possibly the extreme slant of the glass? as a safety problem, as well, the brakes have a soft pedal, as well, and require more force than our accord(much much more)or than any car i am used to, except one with air in the lines....dealer says this soft pedal is normal, as well.

my 2008 civic ex-l ac condenser was damaged by a road debrispebble. the dealer tells me that it's not covered under warranty, cost $750.00. honda tells me to report it to my insurance. why should i, after deductible, i'll only save $250.00 which i'll lose when my premium goes up.this is not right! hondadealer should inform this flaw to the customer and provide suggestion on how to help prevent this such as a deflector. one like a windshield deflector or something. if this component has to be in the front of the car by design, why wouldn't they design it to be more durable? i'm so upset at honda. after repair i'll be driving while worrying about small objects on the road which i shouldn't have to. and the sad part is that according to what i read on forums, so many other honda owners people have experienced this.

on april 18th 2009, the side airbag (driver�s side) and side curtain airbag (driver�s side) in my 2008 honda civic, deployed with no reason while i was stopped (not moving) and waiting for the green light at a traffic light. i had ringing in my ear for more than 16 hours and a bruised arm for more than 8 days. no one from american honda asked me if i was ok for three weeks. even though i took my car to the dealer right away (20 minutes after the incident happened), my car, that i bought brand new from the same dealer 10 months ago, has been sitting at dealer�s service to be fixed. i have been paying for the rental car and the car payment. on may 15th 2009 (after two inspections that were performed over three weeks by american honda) the dealer gave a form titled �release of all claims��. the service manager told me if i signed the paper the car would be fixed and ready in two days. insurance company also confirmed that there was no accident or any damage to the car. below are my concerns about the above brief description of my experience: �why am i supposed to sign a paper to get my car fixed that should have already been fixed and covered by the warranty? �what kind of customer service and satisfaction is this? �does american honda have a right to do this to me? �if they are capable of giving me a nightmare like this, what kind of rights do i have against them? �how can i defend myself and start the procedure without a lawyer wanting to take the case (since it is not a big case in their words)?

my daughter lisa adkins and i own a 2008 honda civic lx. i sent this to the dealer that worked on it and based on my own investigation there seems to be a serious production defect with some of those vehicles. my daughter lisa adkins took her/my 2008 honda civic lx to your service dept on memorial day. to say i'm mad is just not a good enough description of how i feel. the car had a loud knocking noise, high vibration and back tires basically wiped out. now you guys did provide service however little that was and false advice which is worse than none. 1) the service dept lied to my daughter about the problem which seems to be inherent in an unknown percentage of 2008 honda civics. i don't know why. maybe they came off the same assembly line with a bad frame alignment or what ever. i do not know but i am going to find out. 2) the service guy said the tires weren't covered by the warranty. that really bleeped out off. there is a production problem with that car and you guys know it, and tried to hide it from my daughter with �!@#$% and tried to say it wasn't covered by warranty so she would have to pay for it. 3) you kind of made my daughter feel like this was her fault. well kiss my ?!@#$% we'll see about that. i told her to return it to you guys and me/you/honda and the national transportation safety board will sort out the bodies. 4) in the 1980s i found a similar type thing with a tire called brigestone and never let it go until, well you know fella. as far as i am concerned you and your dealership have no regard for the safety of my daughter, my grandson or anyone else that rides in that car so just wait and see what happens you under a rock ?!@#$%.

a roaring noise from the rear tires started while on a road trip. when i got home, i took the car to the dealership to have it looked at. before i went in, i had done quite a bit of research about this problem so i was pretty sure it was the control arm defect that many other people are having. i told the people in the service department about service bulletin 08-001 which says that 06-07 civics have defective control arms. as expected, they told me that the rear tires were cupped and that i needed an alignment which is not covered under the warranty. first off, honda does not do anything about the service bulletin unless you print it out and give it to them. they know it is a safety issue but wont do anything about it until they get sued because someone loses control of their car and gets hurt.

2008 honda civic hybrid purchased new, it now has 22k miles, tires were rotated at 17k miles during dealer work to replace defective rack and pinion. following this repair i noticed a pronounce road noise inside car at speed range from 30 to 55 mph. on 7/20/09 dealer advised that lack of timely tire rotation and alignment is the cause of excessive tire wear noted on one tire. tire is worn smooth on inside portion of the tread. dealer stated that corrective action is not covered by warranty. i contend that excessive tire wear on one tire is a safety issue. conditions found should not exist on tire that has only 22k miles. i expect honda to take appropriate measures to correct this problem at their cost. updated 07/31/09.*jb

odometer - just had 10,000 mile service done 2 weeks ago, but had less than 9,000 miles. i take public transportation to work so my yearly mileage is low. while driving my care to the bus stop this morning, i noticed that my odometer reads over 14,400 miles - -that means i have driven over 5,500 miles in two weeks - -almost as much as i have driven for an entire year. the odometer has obviously jumped 5,000+ miles. i am convinced this is not a dealer service scam because the oil change reminder sticker they placed in the upper left corner of my windshield shows my next service in november 09 with an anticipated 13,000 mile usage. this issue is huge for me because i lease this car, and now this could dramatically impact the wear and tear issue along with my mileage allowance. the dealer wants me to bring in the car which i will do as soon as possible. i did ask the service rep to make note of my name and complaint so that when i come in they cannot claim i added that much mileage.

the failure occurs when the car is parked outside and the temperature will rise inside the car causing the sun visor to split apart. when this happens the sun visor will not stay up anymore causing the driver to be distracted with the sun visor moving around. it has happened to my driver side first then 500 miles later the passenger side broke from the same hot weather conditions. luckily my car was still under warranty and it was fixed but other civic owners not in warranty have not been so lucky.

while traveling on a downgrade on ca hwy 101 north of santa barbara, our 2008 honda civic automatically downshifted causing the car to slow down rapidly and outside of our control. vehicles traveling behind us had to make quick decisions to keep from hitting us. i had to put the automatic transmission into neutral to keep the car from slowing down any further. i have researched this on the internet and it is the fault of hondas grade logic control system that is suppose to work on upslopes but is also making incorrect decisions on downslopes. honda says this is normal behavior.

i don't know where to turn for help my problems is that i bought a honda civic last year 2008, for business use. my wife was using it to commuted from home to business every day. it happened yesterday (aug/12) while she was driving down i-15 and bangerter hwy she heard a snap sound very loud under the car, she then slowed down to 60mph. the car behind her passed along side her and signaled her to pull the car over immediately. she pulled over and got out to inspect the vehicle, and she found out that the axle (suspension support) had broke off. the only thing that held the shaft from flying off the road were the brake cable and electrical cable. thank god, nothing happened to her and my 10 month old son and my second child on the way. she immediately called me to let me know what was going on. i had her called the tow truck and to take the vehicle to larry miller honda for now. on the same day i had to fly back to salt lake to take care of the problems. i called honda consumer public affairs for assistance but they told me that they couldn't help me. i don't know where to turn, can you help. thanks a million. updated 08/19/09 *bf photos received. updated 08/20/09.*jb

1. after normal 30k mileage service and tire rotation/balancing 5/23/2009, with highway handling car shook extremely and wobbled at speeds 60 and above, pulls to the right going downhill. 2. problem remains with 2008 hybrid past 35k, reproducible at highway speeds (60mph-70 mph, 2000 rpm to 2500 rpm) going on straight stretch and downhill. front of car pulling sideways is reproducible in rain or when breaking going down low/medium grade hill. 8/18, the problem continues to occur, is a safety concern when on highway,especially going downhill or on straight stretch. 3. reported to dealer, went in for check, dealer contacted warranty and replaced transmission fluid. problem still occurs, dealer recommends change front tires now as tires rippled between may 23rd and june 3rd, 2009. paid for 2 new tires to replace old per dealers recommendation friday 6/11. dealer goes through extended warranty to replace transmission 6/11. the problem dissipated 30%,but shaking occurs. return vehicle to dealer to verify if software updates were made 6/24 after transmission was replaced. dealer made software update 7/6 received car back and problem showed up within a day. reported issue. dealer received honda recommendation to disconnect egr valve 7/31. problem reduced by ~20% but still remains at 60mph etc. 8/8 follow-up with concern of driving in rain dealer recommends contacting honda corporate customer service. dealer contacts factory rep, whose recommendation is there is nothing further that can be done. there was no inspection made for any joint/bolt/belt slippage etc. honda customer service contacted dealer and factory representative and stated nothing else can be done 8/18 as f.rep has closed the case, cannot override f.rep, and does not have statistics to confirm either way whether the problem exists in other 2008 hybrids with similar mileage. dealer is unaware of the root of shaking/steering problem (software/d/drivetrain/cooling/exhaust just a worn belt loose bolt etc.).

our 2008 honda civic coupe developed a road noise in the rear tires at about 12k miles. tires have been rotated every 5k and i have service order requests to back this up. at 15kmiles the noise had gotten unbearable. i asked my local mechanic to check and see if there was anything obvious before i took it to the honda dealer and he noted that the rear tires appeared to have the belts slipped and that the right tire appeared worn out. i called honda and they directed me to bridgestone who told me the tires were worn out because honda has a chassis problem and that the tires were not warranted for wear. honda said there is no technical issues with their suspension and they couldn't help me. so i have a car with tires that are worn out at 15k miles and i have no recourse but to eat it and hope that the next set of tires wears better. this is unsafe in my opinion. poot tire wear can only come from so many things. i have air pressure monitoring system, so it wasn't improper inflation, the vehicle is new so it isn't suspension issues, the tires were rotated twice in first 10k miles (documented). i guess having unsafe tires on a one year old automobile is not a big deal for honda, but it is for me. having a 1 year old auto in the drive way that we are scared to drive out of the neighborgood isn't a good thing.

this is the second time in the last several months that i have needed to replace my sun visors. the first time in june of 2009, my driver side sun visor was melted by the heat, cracked open and would no longer remain in the "up closed position," instead, it would hang in my face, impeding my vision. suffice to say i was not pleased. just yesterday, (9/06/09) the same thing happened but to my passenger side. i have not folded down my driver side for fear of it melting and hanging in my face but yesterday a passenger used the passenger visor and left it in the down position, and the next day it was melted. i am afraid that it will happen again on the driver side so i do not use my sun visor at all for fear of having to spend time taking it to the dealer to have it repeatedly replaced.

1. i attempted to turn left on a busy 6 lane farm to market road. when there was an opening in traffic i pressed the accelerator and the car moved out into the traffic lanes, but with greatly reduced acceleration. my hybrid had lost the electric motor assist needed to accelerate normally. i was almost broadsided by a speeding suv because i could not accelerate out of the way quickly. 2. this loss of electric motor assist or integrated motor assist (ima) started off happening once or twice a month. now it is happening a couple of times a week. there is no audible or visual warning light that this loss has occurred. the only evidence is the loss of acceleration and the battery charge level will drop from "normal" (6 or 7 bars) to one or two "bars" on the battery charge display. this unexpected loss of normal acceleration can be very dangerous when merging into busy traffic. it is only after the driver commits that they discover they cannot accelerate "normally" 3. i have taken the vehicle to the honda dealership five times and opened a case at american honda. their position is that since they can't replicate the failure, they can't fix the problem. after doing my own research, i discovered that this loss of acceleration is due to a programmed function in their ima system. the system is designed to periodically reset the state of charge for the battery pack to a minimal value to eliminate accumulated errors. when this happens, the electric motor assist is disabled and the system uses the electric motor to recharge the battery pack. the problem is that this "reset" occurs at the worst possible time; when the vehicle is stopped and the driver needs the high torque/low rpm electric motor to provide adequate acceleration. in my opinion, this unannounced reset function at a stop is a design flaw and makes this vehicle dangerous to operate.

like in complaint #10225955, my 2008 civic 4-dr ex-l sporadically refuses to stop. it has happened three times so far, at different speeds, in different weather, with and without the cruise control on. i will lightly push the brake to slow down, and then push slightly harder once i've reached the crosswalk/intersection to come to a complete stop. instead of stopping, the car will lunge forward once or twice. it's like the brake is on but the engine is still trying to accelerate, and is absolutely terrifying. i've brought it into the dealer once and was told that it was normal downshifting of gears while coming to a stop--but that should not cause the car to actually jolt forward, stop, and then jolt forward again, with my foot squarely on the brake the entire time. (i looked down at my feet the third time it happened because i wondered if i was pressing the gas by mistake. i wasn't.) i'm bringing it into the dealer again, but am not hopeful that they will figure out the problem.

i was driving along in 6 lanes of 1-way traffic when the car to my right made a left-hand turn in front of me forcing a collision. i was in a pattern of acceleration following a previous stop at a red light and was traveling at approximately 35 mph at the time of impact. i had no passengers with me. the point of impact to my vehicle was the front as i hit the turning vehicle on the driver's left side forcing release of the driver's side airbag in that vehicle. my driver's airbag never deployed. i was wearing a seatbelt. i sustained neck and upper back strain (whiplash) and was taken by ambulance to a local ed where i underwent x-rays to evaluate for damage to my cervical spine area (negative) and treatment for pain.

rodents eat wires, fuel, brake lines. it seems the car companies have started using a newer material to replace the common plastic used in wire insulation and tubing with a soy based product. this newer product has attracted squirrels and other rodents which eat this material. this is not only a safety issue it's also a hazard as there is no way to prevent this. any number of things can happen to cause a major accident due to this very bad choice of material used. one only has to search google to see how wide spread this problem is. i typed in "squirrel ate my honda wires" and came up with pages and page of complaints. the first one in the results given is a person that had two new honda cars and both were disabled due to this.

excessive inner-edge rear tire wear (outer edge and middle area tire wear seems normal and has plenty of tread left after the inner edges are excessively worn). tires replaced at 18,000 miles, 31,000 miles, and need to be replaced again at 40,000 miles (oem dunlop sp31 tires were used each time). dealer replaced rear control arms at 18,000, advised to rotate the tires more often at 31,000 miles. dealer mostly seems unable to resolve, or even acknowledge, the issue.

i recently purchased a 2008 honda civic. i had a wreck and it was totaled. a chevrolet tahoe hit the front end of my civic going at least 65 mph and smashed the whole front end. the impact was very strong causing the tahoe to flip. my air bags did not deploy, when my car was looked at to see if it was totaled or if it could be fixed, the adjustor said my airbags should have deployed. where the sensor is, is completely smashed. i bought my honda civic because i heard they were very safe cars, and although no one was severely injured in the accident, i don't know if i should buy another honda civic if the air bags aren't going to deploy when they should.

1. had car tires rotated every 7500 miles at oil change time. at 23300 after rear tires were put on front in rotation, tires would bounce and were noisy and there was vibration. tires were cupped and ruined. dealer said need new tires and alignment. got new tires, at costco, and alignment at dealer. dealer gives paper work and still out of spec. original tires. issue on 2006 thru some 2008 honda civic hybrids was rear control arms issues. still an issue, premature wear and cupping causing potential for accident. honda dealer says nothing wrong, but this is an issue. others on internet also show same problem with premature tire wear.

i was driving at about 65 mph when my car suddenly started swerving to my left. i pressed my brakes and i heard a little explosion, but i didn't think anything of it. my car started swerving even more and i was not able to do anything because it was out of my control. my car spun and hit another car and then spun again and ended up crashing into the left side divider. when police arrived at the scene, they noticed my wheel was popped out. the wheel malfunction must have caused the accident because the wheel popped out even before i hit the divider.

while traveling on a downgrade on i-15 south of the baker grade south of las vegas our 2008 honda civic automatically downshifted causing the car to slow down rapidly and outside of our control. vehicles traveling behind us had to make quick decisions to keep from hitting us. i had to put the automatic transmission into neutral to keep the car from slowing down any further. from what i've read it is the fault of hondas grade logic control system that is suppose to work on upslope but is also making incorrect decisions on downslopes. its happened two different times now it happens without warning and is a drastic difference to overcome the % of the freeways grade. i will report this to my dealership when i return to be checked.

i had an incident with my 2008 honda civic. i was pulling into the church parking lot and turned to park in the grass next to another vehicle when i lost the steering and then suddenly the car jumped forward out of control and crashed into a tree about 10 ft in front of me. i thought the gas pedal had stuck but the adjustor was not able to confirm that this was the case. i never put my foot on the gas pedal-i was braking and going less than 10 mi/hr at the time. i have been unable to find out what caused the car to leap forward and accelerate. i have had no other incidents with this vehicle. i have put around 35,000 miles on the car mostly highway driving.

my daughter was a passenger in a 2008 honda civic 4dsd. while in a parking lot, they were cut off by another vehicle, and struck such vehicle broad side. the air bags were deployed, at which time my daughter was struck in the face by parts of the dash board. when the air bag deployed it broke the dash in such a way that she was stabbed in the forehead by the dash board pieces. i do know air bags are a good safety device.the way the dash board securing this system, broke, is not safe,and needs to maintain its base to work properly. in this case, the dash breakage, takes away the benefit expected from this airbag system. she was hospitalized, and needed 23 stitches. this could have been worse if it hit her in the eye, and is an un acceptable consequence to a low speed crash.

purchased a 2008 honda civic from local dealer new. this vehicle had alot of road noise for the get go..but saw online that road noise was one of the problems with honda's. had my car regularly serviced at the same dealership over the last year. last month dec 2009 road noise became excessive and took car into dealership. they looked the car over and said tires had excessive wear because i had not rotated them every 5000 miles. car is a year old has 20000 miles and has had road noise all along. dealer refused to replace tires and denied problem. car now has nearly 30,000 miles and is undrivable at this point. haven't replaced tires as it is not affordable. but car is unsafe to drive. dealer said suspension problems noted in 2006-07 models has been fixed, but problem seems rampant in the 2008 if you look on the internet as well as safety reports yet nothing has been recalled, and honda is not standing by their product. now i am still paying for a car that sits in the driveway and is unsafe to drive...cant sell an unsafe vehicle..please investigate this problem.

08 honda civic hybrid - when the batteries are fully charged, the generator is not used for braking. when the batteries are not charged, the generator is used for braking. during the transition, i have been surprised many times by the lack of brakes. when the batteries are not charging you have to really press hard on the brakes to even slow down. then, if you are expecting to press hard and the generator has kicked back in, you are thrown forward as the brakes work fine. i thought this and the occasional herky-jerkiness that goes along with it is normal. but, after reading about the toyota prius brake issue, the honda is just as bad, if not worse. this has been going on since day one of ownership.

my husband was in an accident where he was hit by another vehicle. the drivers side, and the steering wheel airbags deployed airbags deployed. my husband suffered numerous internal bruising , a fracture in his back and a dics that bulges in his back, he was the driver of the vehicle and all these injuries are mainly on his left side of his body where the drivers side air bag deployed. he was told from doctors that he is lucky to be alive, but his injuries could take in excess of a year to heal. he was hit in the front of the vehicle and the vehicle has been totaled due to the damage. he said that when they air bags deployed it took away his breath because the force that the air bags deployed was extreme.

2008 civic ex coupe. had to replace both rear tires at around 20,000 miles due to a slightly visible flat spot on the tires that was causing a progressively loud roar. on initial inspection, the tire dealer advised me the tires looked fine as they still had plenty of tread and appeared to be even wear. however, on closer examination i was able to point out the flat spots visible on the center of the tire. tire dealer could not explain cause. when i had replaced the second rear tire, the tire dealer thought that the belting had slipped. i just assumed i had a bad set of tires. the wear did not look like typical damage caused by misalignment. the same problems has again appeared with about 25,000 miles on the new rear tires. i now have discovered that honda has service bulletin 08-001 which describes my exact symptom and requires the upper control arm to be replaced.. honda has not issued a recall on this. honda should notify owners and tire dealers of this possible failure so consumers are aware on how to correct the problem. besides, the extremely loud noise that eventually appears, the vibration will ultimately lead to complete tire failure.

i own a 2008 honda civic (purchased new) with under 25, 000 miles. i immediately had to have to rotors resurfaced when i took delivery of the vehicle...as i was driving home, i could feel the brakes pulsating when i applied the brakes. i returned to the dealer and they had to resurface the rotors then. after that, the first problem i had was with the rear wheel bearings and the left rear brakes (pads, caliper, rotor). at approximately 18k both rear wheel bearings needed to be replaced, the left rear caliper was frozen, the pads were worn due to that and the rotor needed to be resurfaced. the repairs were covered under warranty and no explanation could be given as to a reason for the premature wear. at approximately 20k, i had to have the front rotors resurfaced (both right and left) due to premature/uneven wear). unfortunately, this was done by my own mechanic during routine maintenance and is not documented by honda (i spoke to honda and was told it was most likely due to "driver/road conditions and there was no way to tell since it was not repaired by a dealer). recently, i noticed the parking brake sticking/freezing and brought the car in for service. the brake pads on the right rear, were unevenly/prematurely worn and the caliper was frozen. both rear rotors had to be resurfaced again! these repairs were also covered under warranty, but again, no explanation could be given as to what keeps causing this premature wear of the brakes. also, this morning, the "side air bag off" indicator light came on and now needs to go back for service again (2nd time in a week).

to whom it may concern, i drive a 2008 honda civic ex, on 2/16/2010 i was in a car accident on the way to work. i tried to avoid a tractor trailer that was coming too close to me and by doing so i lost control of my vechicle and hit the guardrail to the left then spun me into the right lane hitting the guardrail to the right which in turn spun me again to the left and hitting the guardrail to the left face forward. none of the air bags deployed during the accident. as a result i sustained injuries to the left side of my head and upper, middle and lower back pain. i am currently in physical therapy and i am missing two weeks of work. the car was sent to the honda dealership in hartford, connecticut. the dealership told us that the car was totaled and when we asked them about the air bags not being deployed, they told us in turn that from the looks of it i did not hit the guard rail face forward, when i actually did. i did not have any side impacts, most of the damage is in the front and some on the back end. i am hestitant to buy another honda civic due to the air bags not deploying and i am afraid that this may occur to another honda owner. honda is known to have safe vechicles however i am afraid the new honda civics may have a air bag problem, especially after my incident and my car being totaled.

a/c failure in 2008 honda civic. dealer claims rock hit a/c condenser and punctured so coolant ran out. no warranty service available. suggested my insurance might cover. searched online and found many others with same issue, exact same diagnosis. seems to be design flaw where condenser exposed with no protective grill. or condenser made of faulty material and somehow failing with no rock involved at all. strange to see so many people with same diagnosis and honda doing nothing about it. at minimum, honda should recall to install protective shield for a/c condenser. instead, they'd rather charge $600+ to keep repairing them. instead of a recall / bad publicity / cost to honda, they'd rather keep riding this cash cow. what a win for honda!

at 10,000 miles my 2008 honda civic developed loud squealing in the front brakes. they would make this noise at any speed. after much back and forth with nearest dealership they finally replaced them for free. they claimed there was dirt in them, or, alternatively, i rode the brakes too hard. neither was the case. about 6 weeks later the brakes squealed so loud people blocks away stopped to look for hundreds of miles on a trip home after a holiday visit. that stopped after the car garaged overnight. called honda corporate to report problem, was treated badly, all my fault, what could they do? they actually asked me what i wanted them to do like they couldn't see that maybe they should investigate it as a problem! now i see online that 2008 honda accords had this same problem. feel that anything that causes brakes to wear out prematurely is a safety issue that should be addressed. so far the replacement pads have held up. we had our local mechanic check them out after that screeching long trip and he found nothing wrong, no wear, calipers not stuck, etc.

on january 23, 2010, i was involved in a single automobile accident, on highway 111, in indian wells, ca. roads were wet that day. i recall my vehicle hydro-planing and spinning out of control. that is the last i recall, as i believe i was knocked unconscious, i awoke minutes later to find myself still in the drivers seat, to find my back seat engulfed in flames. i managed to free myself from my seat belt and get out through the drivers side window. as managed to get on my feet i walked away from the vehicle just in time for it to explode.. o my next concern is as doing some research after the accident, i came across some interesting information regarding a recall on that type of vehicle. i purchased my vehicle in june 2008, and recall letters were sent out on october 2008. i never received such a letter. i am concerned to what caused my vehicle to catch fire and explode. i contacted a honda mtg. company, and spoke to a case manager and opened a claim. on march 31, 2010, i received a phone call from him, and he said that there was no recall on such vehicle. my personal opinion, he came to that conclusion based on a list of vin numbers., no investigation was done as far as checking the vehicle or taking the time to find out if my vehicle was just one that was bypassed and not put on the vin list. i personally do not feel that they put much effort in finding out why my vehicle exploded. i am now stuck with a balance, medical bills, and no vehicle. please help me in this matter, for i feel this matter was not taken seriously.

currently i have 32,277 miles and don't drive it, it's not safe to drive. i take a bus :) 1# trans locked at 60mph on hwy and caused almost a fatal crash! at 23,000 miles. car was able to drive up to 15mpg having appx. 6000rpms. car left at dealership and only pcm software was upd. no lockups are occurring, but trans is weaving, harsh start/stop often!/unexpected shutdown. dealership found service bulletin #08-014 (harsh engagement), upd. the on board computer and symptoms are much worse than previously. lower mpg ( 25-28 ), much worse performance, unexpected battery discharge, weaving, low accel. dealer duplicated problems, but said "it's ok" and problems is untouched. since they updated the system, the hybrid option is not kicking in as before. prev. i was able to drive slowly only on hybrid, now i can't. no actions are taken to resolve the issue. once they changed the ima batt pack, but this did not help and i see not a difference. complained again, and absolutely no response. brakes are malfunctioning. brake fluid is missing, dealer said "[xxx], it's a mystery". depending on outside temp, battery charge level and car temp breaks work diff! occasionally while slowing down, the battery level reaches full and you must press the pedal as hard as you can to stop. this has caused small crashes and once brakes did not work, or i pressed too lightly ( cold outside with full battery ) and unfortunately i couldn't stop on time and ran over a pedestrian. she is badly injured and suing my insurance company! dealer rec. to "change car, better to buy not a honda and don't bother them if nothing is broken." police report ready to present. these are only the major issues i'm having. i would need much more space to write 20 pgs essay. minor issues: - super fast tire wear ( after 20,000 ) and now again at 32,000 - not working climate ctrl system - check engine, ima light, brake system and airbag lights on. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

i am complaining about the design of honda civic seats which cause me severe neck pain and headaches. i've researched online and seems this is a common health problem among many honda owners. apparently honda is aware of the neck and back pain they have caused, but i've not been able to find any solutions, other than to sell the car and take a $2000 to $4000 loss. honda needs to be held responsible and step up and fix their problem, as toyota was made to do and as any other first class company would do!! these seats can cause serious back and neck trauma. unbelievably shameful for a company such as honda.

2008 honda civic vin# [xxx] on june 5, 2009, i purchased a 2008 honda civic from white plains honda located in white plains, ny for my 21-year old son. the purpose of this letter is regarding the ongoing brake problem he is experiencing. on october 1, 2009 (with only 17,223 miles on the car), my son�s car was serviced at white plains honda because of a grinding noise he was experiencing every time he would step on the brake. white plains honda advised my son that he needed front brake pads and rotors. my mechanic advised me that brakes should last at least 30,000 miles. on the same day, my mechanic replaced 1 set of front disc brakes and 2 brake rotors. on march 26, 2010, my son�s car again needed brake repair. at the time of service, there were 31,425 miles on the car which meant he added an additional 14,202 miles on the car since his last repair. again, i have clarified from a few mechanics that brakes should last at least 30,000 miles. my mechanic advised me that there have been at least 4 honda civics he has serviced in his shop with the same brake problems. he can't figure out why there is a continuous problem with the brake wearing out on the driver's side. i have copies of all the repair receipts. i bought a honda because i thought i was purchasing a reputable car for my son. in this economy, who can afford to replace brakes every 14,000 miles? information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

the paint on my 2008 honda civic si a few months after i bought it. the dealer told me that it was from rocks. there are paint chips on the car where it is not possible for a rock to hit it. they refused to fix the problem and said that a rep would contact me. i've been complaining about the paint for 2 yrs and have not heard from any honda rep. i've put touch-up paint on the car to prevent the car from rusting but the touch-up paint won't even stay on. when i first bought the car i had it "simonized" in the hopes that the paint would be protected. guess i was wrong and now i don't know what to do. my car is rusting out and it's only 2 yrs old.

severe tire cupping, early tire failure. dealer unable to fix cause of problem, they state that it results from a design flaw (non-adjustable cambers/arms). tires failed at 20,000 miles and are failing again at 44,000 miles. i had to fight with honda to get them to go 50/50 on the first set of replaced (dunlop) tires. they argues that i had enjoyed using them for 1/2 their life, so 50% was their maximum dollar match. i was also told to "rotate" my tires more frequently, even though i had service records showing that i do rotate on a routine basis at the dealership. from what i am researching online, honda has a big problem going on with tire cupping on the civic hybrids. my hope is that this is researched by the nhtsa more thoroughly. i am seeing numerous complaints on your website about this issue.....some are filed under "tires" while others filed under "rear suspension". i'm guessing the choose to file under "rear suspension" because dealers like mine are stating that this is a camber issue. on a side note, and this is odd to me, the dealership could not bring my alignment into manufacture recommended "spec" either. the numbers are significantly "off" where honda says they should be. ironic???

the sunvisors bind and split in warm weather, resulting in the visors swinging freely directly in the driver's line of sight. this failure occurs approximately once per year. while under warranty, the dealership acknowledges this is a common issue and replaces the visors. i've had three driver's side visors replaced in under 36k miles. several other people i know with similar model honda civics (2006-2009, lx, ex, si) experience the same issue at the same frequency.

the sun visor has split apart in a 08 honda civic, and it flops down and stays down, in front of my vision out the windshield. it won't stay up, or even pushed toward the windshield; stays down at its lowest point. split apart where the rod goes in the visor. i have seen this complaint in many civic forums. it is a safety problem as it interferes with seeing out the windshield.

we only received one warning the engine overheated for no reason then we found out we had a defective engine from honda in a 2008 civic. the engine was replaced but they know they have a defective engine block in the honda civic 2008, 2007, and 2006 so how do we know if we did or did not receive another block with the same problem. this could overheat and cause a fire. we were not given a new warranty on the replaced engine. we were not reimbursed on expenses to rent a car, and fly back to pick up car and towing.

i bought my 2008 honda civic lx in june 2008. at 15,000 miles i had a bunch of brake problems (loud noises, difficulty stopping). i brought the car into the dealership where i bought it and was told i had "contaminated" brake pads. they replaced them for free. six months later, i was having the same problem. took it in again to the dealer and they said nothing was wrong. i have continued to feel uneasy about my brakes as they don't stop like the three other cars i have had. now, at 41k screeching noises have started again. they started on a friday and i took the car to the same dealership monday morning. they told me i have barely any brake pads left and it must be due to my driving. (incorrect as i mainly did highway driving and now have a 7 minute commute to work.) the dealership was absolutely horrible, claiming it is my issue and they are not responsible.

2008 honda civic hybrid,(problem), ima battery discharge, while driving the battery will discharge to 0 or 1 bar and motor assist will not work until battery charges up, which can take awhile, with no assist the car is slow and dangerous. also with low or no battery power the gas mileage drops about 20%. the reason you buy a hybrid. after research on the web this seems to be a large problem many other have it appears that honda doesn't have a fix for this problem. the dealer will reprogram your ima system which doesn't allow for as much battery backup,which also decreases gas mileage. this gives the mpg of many other cheaper non hybrid cars. if after many battery discharges and if the diagnostic computer shows that the battery is bad then a new battery can be installed, the problem still is there, the reprogrammed ima system still doesn't allow for full battery backup and the mpg will not increase to new care status. again, not what you paid for in the first place. i think honda needs to address this problem. many hybrid owners simply want what they bought in the first place. i think with your help,maybe honda will step up to the plate and address this problem and not try to cover up or prolong the battery with updates to the ima system which appears not to help, this seems to prolong battery life, but doesn't allow for the full benefit of the hybrid concept.

i have a 2008 honda civic with a little over 20,000 miles. initial symptom was a/c fan would shut it's self off and on. dealer replaced a part in the fan motor. less than two weeks later it began again. then on a sunday the a/c began to work intermittently. i took it to the dealer the next day and said that i noticed when at high speed a/c stops working but works at low speed when exiting highway. dealer said there was a service bulletin and ran a couple of software updates and said it was working again. when i picked up the car the problem recurred and i returned it to the dealer same day. this time the dealer determined it was a cracked block. they said it was a known problem with the coolant system and if i had continued to drive the car it would have overheated and i would have been on the side of the road. the dealership was very helpful and gave me a car to drive while mine was being repaired. they said that the new block will continue to be covered under the drive train warranty. my concern is that if this is a design flaw and a known issue, it may happen again and i will be on the side of the road possibly without warranty coverage.

my 2008 honda civic hybrid has had two basic problems. one, it simply doesn't deliver the mileage promised on the car sticker and that mileage keeps dropping. the second item which i had not thought was related and which is a safety issue, several times after long trips on the highway, when i approached a hill or was going up one, the car would stall out or refuse to move, despite pushing on the accelerator while the engine was on and in drive gear. several times it would start rolling back down the hill or would impede traffic behind me. once the car sat for a while, it would resume working properly, so i never reported the problem to the dealer as i could not replicate it. in this morning's la times cover story about honda being under state scrutiny for the gas mileage problem, several people interviewed related a similar problem to mine. that's when the "aha" took place that maybe my car's problems were related. luckily i did not suffer any injuries or crashes due to this issue, but the potential for great damage is there. please investigate this issue and let me know if there is anything i can do to forward the investigation. thanks.

my 2008 honda civic hybrid's ima battery is discharging fully and not recharging itself. this occurs often in my hot city. it makes it a major safety problem when trying to merge lanes. when the battery fails to assist the motor, acceleration is near impossible, making it a major safety complaint. this is well-documented in the press. the failure occurs anytime in heat. software update was performed, and it didn't help the battery to charge. max battery capacity may have declined as a result of this defect.

2008 honda civic hybrid with 24,000 miles with hybrid battery and performance degradation that is, at times, a real issue. battery doesn't hold charge very long and very adversely affects acceleration. problem is very repetitive and very adversely affects acceleration. honda's recall software update was applied within the last 30 days but battery is still not holding a charge and acceleration degradation and safety remains an increasing concern. honda should replace these degraded batteries but won't take any action until an ima light comes on - at which time, the battery would be almost fully degraded. battery degradations happens very often - even after the recent honda software update and many honda civic hybrid owners are very concerned about this performance issue.

we own a 2008 honda civic hybrid. the ima battery frequently in hot weather goes down to nothing, and car has difficulty. received the recall notice from honda regarding update to computer software. when i took the car in, i asked specifically if this would decrease the gas mileage, as the ima battery assist would not come on as frequent. i was told, "no, gas mileage should be the same" well, the gas mileage has decreased approximately 3-4 miles per gallon. the ima battery assist does not come on, and makes acceleration for passing and merging onto freeway difficult. if possible, would prefer to have the old software re-installed. i believe honda did this update on the software, as they were probably not wanting to replace anymore batteries at $3,000.00 a pop. the performance is lacking, and needless to say, we are considering trading the vehicle in. honda needs to do what is right. we do not want this to turn into a toyota debacle.

i have a 2008 honda civic ex-l. the car currently has 23,700 miles on it. i have been hearing a loud vibration noise on the back of the car for sometime now and after i just had my tires rotated, i have found that the back tires have flat spots on them. i have done some research and have found that many many other consumers are having this same complaint and have had no luck with honda in fixing the problem. from what i have researched it is because of the control arm that is making the tires wear out fast. i have contact the dealer and they state they are unaware of any such problem, which i find very hard to believe. some people have went to other dealers and were told that honda didn't feel this was a big enough problem for a recall. well if that is the case then why don't they fix these cars> are they waiting for deaths to occur from faulty tires? i want my car fixed it is unfortunate, but i still owe 17000 on it and i don't want to just throw that money out the window if i have to be buying tires every few months.

we received a letter from honda stating that there was a recall on the software stating that a software update was needed to be done on the car to help the battery life of the car. so we brought it in to be serviced and ever since, we've lost power to the car, and lost mpg that used to be approx. 38 mpg to now 29 mpg, the same as our '99 civic coup dx, that is not a hybrid. my wife, while going onto the freeway was almost hit, while trying to accelerate. my wife is now hates driving the car she used to love. we live in a hilly area. when trying to accelerate up a hill we drive everyday, if the battery charge is 4 blocks or lower, it doesn't even assist. it's all the gas engine. the battery rarely kicks in so that defeats the hybrid theory and just adds more pollution that honda purports that it doesn't. to put it straight, this is not the car i bought and have been frustrated with the experience. i've brought my car back to honda to try to get the software issue resolved. they stated that there is nothing wrong with the car, engine or battery that everything is fine. when asked for an explanation for the loss of power and mpg, they said that i should try a higher octane of gas or a different brand. i have always used the highest octane gas from different gas stations without any issues before the software upgrade. so that isn't the problem. they have refused to say that there is an issue with their "software upgrade". i have pretty much wasted $26,000+ on purchasing this car. all i can say is this is shame on another big company, trying to save $$ by taking advantage of their own loyal customers. thank you honda!

in august 2010 i took my 2008 honda civic hybrid to the dealer for routine maintenance. the dealer performed a purported software update on the battery system without notifying me until afterwards. immediately upon leaving the dealer, i noticed a profound reduction in power and acceleration. on the freeway portion of the drive home, i was almost rear-ended twice as i drove in the slow lane up a minor grade where the vehicle could not accelerate over 40 miles per hour (with the pedal fully depressed in the passing gear)-- prior to this date i had driven my vehicle for its prior 20 months of ownership up that same grade at 70mph. additionally, prior to this date i had never even utilized the "s" gear on my transmission. ever since honda's software update my car has become a severely underpowered accident waiting to happen. i am reduced to driving in the slow lane on the freeway with vehicles flashing me as they approach a 40-45 mph vehicle at 60-70 mph from behind. i have called the honda service departments at several local dealers regarding this problem, and get a universal response- "wait for your system to adjust to the software update" or "you need to adjust your driving". what the heck does this mean? i drove the vehicle fine for 20 months prior to the software update and now it drives like a 20 year old 4 cylinder engine with 2 bad pistons. the decreased power and acceleration are a dangerous accident in the making. i am fearful of being rear ended. this is an every day problem that was caused by this "software update" and i suspect that it is happening to every 2006-2008 honda civic hybrid that goes to the dealer for this software update. an additional consequence of this alleged "software update" is a profound drop in gas mileage from approximately 37 combined mpg prior to "update" to 29-30 post "update". i have never lodged a complaint with any organization before, but like i've previously stated, this "update" is a danger to the public.

this is now the 2nd occasion in which i own a honda that has a leaky gas tank. the first time was in 2007 with my 2004 honda odyssey that began spontaneously leaking gas from a valve in the gas tank. it was repaired. last week on 09/09/10 i filled my 2008 honda civic hybrid up with gas as normal and by sunday afternoon it was leaking enough gas to make the smell in the garage unbearable. i took it to the dealership and was informed that the line from where the gas is put in by the user and where it meets the gas tank is defective and has begun leaking. because this hose is integrated in to the gas tank - honda is replacing the entire gas tank. i am currently waiting for this repair to be completed - but because it has now happened to me in two separate honda vehicles i have some concerns about the safety of the gas tanks in the honda vehicles.

on june 20, 2010, my wife took her mother on a trip to the midwest. when she started back, the shaking became extremely bad, and the noise was deafening. the closest honda dealer was middlekauff honda, twin falls idaho. they said she was running on the steel belts of the 2 rear tires, and that they would need to be replaced. he said he didn�t have the honda parts to correct/repair the defective honda parts, but he would do a 4 wheel alignment, and with 2 new tires she should be able to get home, then take the issue up with our local honda dealer. the cost of this service, and (inferior) tires to the vehicle was $269.31. on july 16, 2010 we took the car (mileage 26234) into our dealer who replaced the defective parts and did another alignment at no charge to us. our service manager asked why twin falls honda did a 4 wheel alignment, as it did not fix the problem without replacing the defective honda parts. we told him the twin falls honda dealer said it should be done. our local service manager told us that the honda civic hybrid is very particular about the type of tires you put on it. the delta majestic tires put on in twin falls, besides being noisier, may reduce gas mileage. he said the original dunlop tires would have been best. we are extremely disappointed with honda usa regarding this defect, the damage caused, what it has cost us, and loved ones lives put in jeopardy! this was caused by a known defect, per honda service bulletin 08-001. we are asking that honda usa live up to it�s reputation for customer service, without us needing to seek further recourse, and that; our unnecessary money spent for the 4 wheel alignment and 2 inferior tires in twin falls be refunded to us, and all four tires be replaced with the original dunlop model.

basic complaint is unpredictable loss of power when accelerating. this seems to be due to the ima system operation. not being able to depend on consistent acceleration has drastically changed the way you have to drive vehicle to prevent crash. if you needed the ability to accelerate quickly and safely, you cannot count on this vehicle to provide it. it occurs almost daily when acceleration is needed most, turning across traffic and merging in traffic/highway on-ramps. at the start ownership of vehicle, no problems noted. car operated great! in last 5-10k miles car has gotten worse and worse. it has had all software updates. mpg was always 42-45. now runs around 35 mpg.

ever since i bought my 2008 honda civic sedan ex-l i have had a vibration, tire cupping and sever noise in the rear end suspension and wheels. honda claims it is because of improper tire rotation intervals. tire cupping is not due to improper tire rotation. it is due to lack of proper shock absorbing. i have had my civic back for this problem every 10,000 miles with no solution from honda. at 26000 miles i replaced the rear tires because they were badly cupped. now my new tires are cupped as well. after repeated wheel balancing, alignments and many attempts to have honda fix it i replaced the rear shocks with heavy duty shock to no avail. the last car i owned that showed signs of rear tire cupping was my 1970 fiat 850 racer. i replaced the rear production shocks with koni adjustable shocks and the cupping ceased. again honda refuses to acknowledge that there is a problem. there is definitely a problem and needs a remedy.

leading up to the failure, it was necessary ziggle the steering wheel in order to turn the key and start the car. on july 4, 2010 the ignition totally seized - stranding the driver. it was necessary to tow the car to a dealership. honda advised the car was just out of warranty. the following parts were replaced at a cost of $1026.00: ignition switch, dummy sidewinder and the lock assembly / steering. in a letter to honda we stated that the part hadn't been reasonably durable and that the warranty didn't apply. the car ignition failed long before it should have. honda agreed to pay $653.00 towards repairs in response to our letter.

i have a 2008 honda civic hybrid since it was brand new, never a problem. in july i received a letter explaining a software upgrade that was to help the live of my ima battery. since this "upgrade" my ima motor does not assist all the time. specifically when going up hills and when trying to merge onto a freeway/highway it will not kick in. i would guess 20% of the time it does not engage at all. i have taken it to darryl waltrip honda in franklin, tn. they saw the problem and agreed it was a problem but then after talking with "corporate" have decided it is not a problem. i'm nervous that i do not have the proper acceleration in these circumstances. i have now read numerous similar complaints online. something should be done about this.

have a 08 civic hybrid with 89k miles. got the recent battery software upgrade several weeks ago. have had a sudden drop in battery charge down to one or two bars, both before and after the upgrade. recovery usually fairly quick, driving on the interstate, 72 mph, all of a sudden dash went dark and engine stopped. no warnings or lights beforehand. coasted to the side of the road. able to restart immediately. happened twice more over the next 30 minutes. these times put the car in neutral and restarted as i coasted. tank about 1/3 full with shell gas. filled the tank with off brand gas and drove the rest of the way ok. took it to honda dealer. they checked engine (no codes) and electrical system. nothing found. have to drive this car every weekend for 400 mile round trip. concerned about upcoming weekend.

2008 honda civic hybrid experiencing severe tire cupping for 3rd time. vehicle is having it's 3rd set of tires put on at 51,000 miles. fuel economy is dramatically lower as well. honda has agreed (2nd time now) to pay 50% of another new set of tires. vehicle has been aligned and tires have been rotated as advised. i know two other persons in my city with the tire cupping issue. this problem is also rampant on the internet. honda has no solution to fix the cause of the severe tire cupping problems. owners are being forced to get half life out of their tire purchases.

2008 honda civic hybrid ima dash light and engine light come on at approximately 31,000 miles. i was driving and all of the sudden the integrated motor assist light on the dash and the engine light came on. i stopped and read that this indicated a problem with the integrated motor assist and that performance would be affected which it was. acceleration was sluggish and slow from a stand still. i took it to the dealership immediately and was asked if i had received a recall notice which i said i had not. they said they were aware of the problem and that it required a software upgrade. i left the car for about 30 minutes and when i returned they said that they flashed the computer and did an upgrade. after this there were no more problems. i have looked at nhtsa and honda site and there is no mention of this problem or a recall listed on any site. i just wanted to let you know that this may be a problem. thank you.

we purchased a 2008 honda civic hybrid new, and were very satisfied with the performance and the pickup was excellent. the company performed a "mandatory" software upgrade to improve battery life in september 2010. since that update, the car has drastically diminished response time to acceleration, especially when attempting a sudden burst to change lanes or turn through intersections. the engine actually has almost stalled when attempting to start from a dead stop. this response time resulted in a near miss while entering freeway traffic due to the sluggishness of the engine when requesting acceleration that, prior to the software change, would have not been a problem. it is my belief that the software upgrade that honda has forced upon the owners of the honda civic hybrid is a detriment to safe driving, and should be reversed at the soonest opportunity before someone forgets and is actually involved in an incident that involves serious injury if not death.

i do not often drive a night but in recent months, when i did drive at night, i had significant difficulty seeing the highway. i thought "well, it must be my age" so i decided to buy ge nighthawk bulbs to replace the oem (sylvania dot g0708 usa)bulbs. i bought the nighthawk bulbs because they are supposed to provide 30% greater light. today (12/29/2010) i decided to remove the oem bulbs and install the ge nighthawk bulbs. when i removed the oem low beam bulbs i noticed there was a tan coating inside the bulb that extended from the bottom of the bulb to slightly above the tip of the bulb beyond midway as they bulb is installed. there was also some of the tan substance at the base of the bulb. from the amount of coating inside the bulb i am guessing light volume would have been reduced by 40% or more. when i removed the high beam bulbs they were perfectly clear; as they should have been. there is no way the low beam bulbs should have been that clouded given the mileage on the car and the little driving i do at night. i have saved the bulbs and i will send them to you should you want to test their light output. i can also send a scanned image if a bulb which approximates the extent of the problem. how many people are driving at night in honda civic cars, at risk, because of poor light output from the low beam head lamps? if it were only one it is one too many.

2008 civic (purchased new) currently has 29,000 miles and just installed my second new set of tires. i rotate the tires on a regular basis but the rears continue to wear prematurely on the insides. the dealership checked the alignment and "fixed" the out of tolerance issue but wasn't willing to replace the tires. car is still burning through tires every 15k, very noticeable road noise, and mileage continues to run 25% below sales quotes. vehicle is extremely difficult to drive on packed snow without fishtailing.

i was driving my 2008 honda civic with my daughter, at a speed of about 50mph. i was attempting to make a stop for a traffic light. i realized that the car was not wanting to stop, i pressed harder on the brake. when it came to a stop, the engine was revving at high rpms, i let up on the brake slightly to see if the engine would shut down when it lunged forward. i slammed the brake down again and reached for the downshift, when at the same time the engine came down to an idle. the accelerator had obviously been stuck. i had stopped the vehicle over the white line with my nose out in the intersection. no one was in front of me & no one next to me, thankfully. i called a local honda dealer, made an appt for that afternoon. my husband and i were waiting in the customer area for about 5 minutes when we were informed by the dealer employee that the two mechanics had called in & said that they had duplicated the action i reported & that the car was unsafe to be on the road, for us to leave it & they would take care of it. the mechanic who drove it, confirmed it to me personally. the cars computer didn't register the two events. the dealer told us they couldn't fix it if the computer wouldn't tell them what to fix. honda's regional rep was called in on jan 10 & deemed it as safe to drive. (honda's rep deemed the car that the dealer employee had told us was "unsafe to be on the road" as being "safe"!). jan 10, we requested to speak with honda rep, jan 11, no contact from honda rep after service manager left 1 voice mail, 2 e-mails. (asked for reps #, refused) switched courtesy cars with dealer, requested the "description" of events on service ticket reflect the two mechanics statement about experiencing the "stuck accelerator". jan 12, still waiting to speak with honda rep and revised service ticket. dealer still has our honda. i am concerned for the safety of myself & others if i drive it without honda repairing it. please help us resolve this.

our standard 2008 civic ex (bought june 2008) started to have variable vibration/shuttering issues from idle/stop to 1st and 2nd gear around 28,000 miles (new civic, we are the only owners, no accidents). the shuttering stopped after the car was in higher gears. this vibration issue worsened and we could not safely accelerate the vehicle when shifting from an idle position into 1st gear - due to extreme vibrations, which became more frequent. we took the vehicle to the dealership around 35000 miles on november 17, 2010, to determine/correct the shuttering/vibration issues. the dealership indicated they could not replicate the issue and returned the vehicle. the shuttering/vibration continued and we decided to replace all of our tires at our cost around 40,000 miles to see if this would correct the issue. the vibration/shuttering continued at variable times. at 41,000 miles, the vibration/shuttering became impactful and we could not safely accelerate from an idle position without the car shaking/not engaging effectively. we took the car into the dealer again on february 3, 2011 and the technician replicated the issue with us in the car. they indicated they looked at the vehicle motor mounts and "looked" at the clutch (not inspected). they said nothing was wrong with it and it was due to the way we drove the vehicle, even though their technician replicated the issue. they said honda does not have any recommendations for this issue via the phone technical line. we did not take the car back due to safety concerns and it is still at the dealership. we do not feel safe driving the vehicle, as it will not engage/accelerate properly without shuttering when shifting from idle into 1st and 2nd gear.

i purchased my 2008 honda civic lx coupe on november 25th, 2009. when i purchased it, it had approximately 12k miles. in the summer of 2010, both of my sun visors broke. it appears that the swivel part of the visor wasn't lubed good enough and so it snapped the visors open. it broke the plastic part that help it all together. it has not been replaced. it costs about $50 each visor. dealer refused to replace it because it is not covered under their warranty.

honda gave us a warning that our civic could lose it's coolant and break down. they refuse to do a recall. we complained to the state of oregon and they agreed with us but could not get honda to recall our car just extend the warranty. we are retired and purchased the car to drive to la to visit our grandchildren and are now afraid to do so as we can't look forward to a breakdown on the highway. it also creates a diminished value for resale for which the state consumer complaint bureau agreed but was unable to get an agreement from honda on. i have all of the documents from honda and the state of oregon and could forward to you if you have the same views that we have. we have only 4500 miles on our civic and have asked them for an ability to trade it in on another car for near what we paid for it for peace of mind in our travels or repair the vehicle. they said that if the problem has not yet occurred they won't address it yet they know that it may occur. at our age and hoping to keep the car for a long time the extended warranty doesn't work for us and it is just a way for honda to avoid a recall and keep their problem out of the medial while pushing the outcome on us with no recourse except to wait for the problem to manifest itself at our inconvenience. they say that the engine would stall so that would lose our power brakes and steering which scares us on top of the inconvenience of an interstate breakdown while both my wife and i have medical issues that cause us concerns in that potential. i can email you the letter of potential engine breakdown potential and the letter from the state of oregon if you are willing to help in this matter.

significant drop in mileage since the "software upgrade" on my 2008 civic hybrid. electric motor does not always kick in when extra power is needed. i called the honda a local honda dealer...the service rep said he would need the car for several days and needed to drive it 140 miles to diagnose the problem. i next called the corporate office to complain...the rep i spoke with said i should take it to a dealer, but also acknowledged the problem. he said there was no current fix of the "upgrade" and he did not know if it was being worked on. i pointed out to him if they already know there is a problem, going to the dealer makes no sense.

i have a 2008 honda civic ex. around 70,000 miles my engine overheated on the highway. upon further inspection there was radiator coolant leak from underneath my car. the honda dealers stated there was a crack on the engine block. i investigated this matter on the internet and there were numerous complaints of cracked engine blocks on the 2008 honda civic. due to numerous complaints honda extended the powertrain warranty to 8 yrs for unlimited miles. there is currently no recall but there should be in my opinion. also i have replaced all four tires on my 2008 honda civic twice in about 70,000 miles due to uneven wear (inner flat areas on the tires) even with tire rotations and alignments. there are also numerous complaints about extreme uneven tire wear on the internet.

there is a well documented defect in the honda civic between years of 2006-2009 for the rear upper arm suspension. there still is a defect in the geometry by .75 degrees and is the reason for early tire wearing. all four of my tires started to wear earlier than usage performed on tire. around 20,000 miles there was early excessive wear noted. i couldn't figure out why there was so much wear on my tires. i had to replace them at 30-34000 miles and believe it is due to the defect in the rear upper arms. i am concerned that this is safety issue and someone needs to look into this and demand honda to make a recall for this. many consumers are complaining about this issue and class action suits have been filed. despite the replacement arm, there still are documents that state excessive tire wear and replacement.

the rear tires have worn out at 12000 and again at 23000 miles. two different manufacturers of tires and all rotations and alignments were accomplished on schedule. tire manufacturers will not accept responsibility and honda has stated that they are not responsible for tire failures. there are many more people listed on various internet auto problem sites that have encountered exactly the same problem as i have with the same make and model vehicle. the wheel alignment shops that i have contacted insist that there is a problem with the suspension of this vehicle and weight distribution (heavy in front, light in rear) compounds the problem.

the engine on my honda overheated and got so hot it actually melted some of the components. faced with a $4000 repair bill, i did some internet research and found that honda had been aware of engine problems with 2006 through 2008 civics. honda had issued a bulletin to letting mechanics know there was a problem with leaking coolant. my husband was exiting a freeway when the car just shut down and started smoking. had it happened sooner, there could have been an accident. i think honda should have recalled these cars rather than wait until a breakdown happens and then do repairs. even the service manager at honda told us they had been doing of lot of these repairs lately. the potential for a breakdown in an unsafe area and cause an accident is great. or at least make sure they get the information to their customers. they know where to find me to send my monthly bill, why not the warranty?

i've noticed several complaints about broken sun visors. my 08 civic hybrid got a crack in the driver side visor. prior to that, it was always very hard to swing the visor to the side or to clip it back in. maybe something was too tight, and that's why it eventually cracked. my dealership replaced it because the car was still under warranty. however, if it had happened a couple months later they wouldn't have. sounds like there's a defect in the visors and honda needs to replace them even if the car is out of warranty.

premature tire wearout - extreme shake, especially ay highway speeds. dealer said nothing is wrong, even though they asked me if it was shaking/vibrating. tires will not pass inspection & need to be replaced. (they were actually worn at 20k) car handles horrible in inclement weather. based on other complaints, i expect this to be an issue every 20k until honda steps up and admits they have a rear suspension issue with the '08s.

POWER TRAIN

took car in for oil change 4/30/2011 at honda dealer. service department performed reflash campaign 10-034 without asking. previously had declined this service and is noted in service records not to perform this service ever. car performance has been significantly diminished since this service has been performed. car will not reliably accelerate smoothly from standstill (red light) or when merging into highway traffic at 40-50 mph. when accelerating from a stop, vehicle may or may not move at acceptable speed causing the potential to enter traffic with inadequate power to get up to speed of oncoming traffic creating a hazardous situation. this is an accident waiting to happen, especially since the performance is now inconsistent and you do not know when it may not accelerate as needed. the engine will rev very high but the car will only go 5-10 mph with pedal all the way to the floor. honda dealer has been unresponsive. i am limiting driving this car as much as possible as this car is unsafe in traffic situations. also, the auto-stop feature does not work as prior to the reflash, engine idles much higher at stops and does not cut off. this has decreased gas mileage significantly.

at approximately 30k miles the hybrid battery charging capacity started to decrease. the battery would not hold a charge as long. honda sent letters out to have a software patch put in to prolong the life of the battery. therefore they know they have a problem. the software made things even worse by degrading mpg and power on acceleration. the electrical motor torque is not enough to make a diff with the underpowered 1.3 engine this car has. too many times when starting from a stop the car has no power and there is a actual delay and very slow acceleration. running the car with the air on is even worse. my wife is afraid to drive this car and honda will not do anything about this . its pushed from dealer to honda corp back and forth. the car is dangerous to drive.

the driver's side sun visor is defective and one day just swung down, partially blocking my vision. the plastic parts split open and the rod is partially exposed. this is a safety issue while driving because it will not stay up in its closed position -- until i get it fixed, the visor is either down in front of my face, or if i swing it out of the way, down, blocking my left vision. there is basically a sun visor in my face all the time while driving, even if it is night - the most dangerous time. i have to constantly swing it out of my face, or out of the way - even just to get in or out of the car.

i was distracted while driving on s. washington blvd, arlington, virginia in exiting onto s. quinn street/columbia pike exit at high speed. i spun out of control and drove onto an island near the intersection, driving over a street sign and hitting a metal pole holding the traffic lights. excessive damage to front end of vehicle, yet airbag did not deploy. i was only vehicle involved in the accident and had no passengers. i received hospital care the following day for whiplash and muscle pain in my neck and shoulder. the police office noted that it was unusual that the airbag did not deploy given the high speed and nature of the collision.

in march of 2009, december 2010, and may 2011, my passenger side airbag and seat weight system failed as indicated by the code read by the dealer. the dealer stated it was a major problem in the civics and was related to the side airbag wiring that has been failing. in may 2011, before my appt. to fix the wiring, an accident occurred and my passenger airbag did not deploy with a passenger in the seat and was hit with sufficient force/deceleration, casing some head injuries. honda says its not a safety issue.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

my front brake pads and shoes have to be replaced every 20,000 miles. the brakes do not give the expected high pitched "squealing" noise; and per my dealer, it led to brake over heating and "imminent failure!" the dealer states that the civics have had this issue repeatedly.

the front suspension on my car was not sufficiently lubricated from the factory, leading to "popping" and "clicking" (both very loud and noticeable) when turning. the dealer says the civics were not given sufficient lubrication and the suspension is not built correctly.

the suspension of the cars is not calibrated correctly per my dealer. this leads to premature tire wear which could lead to failure of the tires.

driver side visor hinge broke and visor swung down and will not stay up. i didn't even pull it down. it fell when i was going over a speed bump at a low speed! the visor now blocks my view when driving.

premature tire wearout - extreme shake, especially ay highway speeds. dealer said nothing is wrong they were actually worn at 20k car handles horrible in inclement weather. based on other complaints, i expect this to be an issue every 20k until honda steps up and admits they have a rear suspension issue with the '08s. experienced severe vibrations/uneven and rapid tire wear, flat spots and cupping on rear tires within first 20k. replaced with four new tires, then experienced the same severe vibrations and symptoms at around 33k. tsb for '06-'07 describes same symptoms and new control arm to resolve issue. have taken car to honda dealer with this issue and they state that my '08 vehicle has the updated control arm and that car is "fine". obviously this is a wide spread problem for the '08 as well and the vehicle is not "fine". there are many more people listed on various internet auto problem sites that have encountered exactly the same problem as i have with the same make and model vehicle.

for the second time since buying this car new the driver-side visor has split in half. the separation occurred at the seam where two plastic parts are joined. the visor will no longer snap into its proper position and hangs down, obstructing visibility and creating a driving hazard. the first incident occurred at approximately 30,000 miles. it has broken again at 50,000 miles. this apparently is a chronic problem on this make and model.

went into church one morning and when we got back into the car, the passenger side visor was broken and is hanging down. this is a concern as there have been numerous reports of the driver side visor suddenly breaking which could pose a hazard when driving and cause an accident. this needs to be recalled and corrected. i am upset that i will be charged for something that is obviously a defective problem with the sun visor and could pose a serious hazard for drivers.

both visors failed completely within 24 hours of each other. while i was driving the driver side visor fell without my touching it and i could not get it to stay up. it blocked my visibility so i had to hold it up so i could see clearly to drive. upon inspection i saw that the visor had split at the hinge, basically looks as if it had exploded from the inside. when i got into my car this morning, the passenger side was in the same condition. this is a safety concern, if you are driving the visors obstruct visibility. how am i supposed to drive with two visors blocking my vision? i can't get them to stay up. there is no option for visor under failed component 1 and 2 below so i selected visibility/wiper.

POWER TRAIN:MANUAL TRANSMISSION

driving on the expressway and the transmission seized up and the vehicle came to an abrupt stop. the vehicle was towed to the dealership and although the vehicle is under warranty the say that the vehicle was abused therefore they will not cover the transmission. honda has had numerous complains regarding the manual transmissions and the failures that they've had.

i have a 2008 honda civic and the driver's visor just decided to come apart. it is still attached, but it will not stay up in it's proper position, instead, it falls in front of my face causing me to be distracted. i am paying for school out of my pocket and cannot afford to replace it just yet. i have to leave it down at all times, and it cannot be pushed back, i have to leave it straight down in my face and bend down to see street lights and other things. it just did this one day, and i never even use my visor. i also only have about 40k miles on my car.

tl* the contact owns a 2008 honda civic. the contact stated that while turning right at approximately 5 mph, the steering wheel locked and would not turn. the vehicle was carefully driven home where it was parked. an independent mechanic examined the vehicle and informed the contact that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 91,000.

TIRES

my '08 honda civic hybrid wears tires abnormally, leading to unsafe driving conditions, especially on wet or frosty surfaces. i have contacted honda yearly about this problem, having had to replace tires at intervals of approximately 15,000 miles. at this low mileage, my tires were bald in spots. although honda has subsidized the cost of new tires, at 50%, they have not fixed the defect which continues to cause this abnormal tire wear.

2008 sun visor on driver side failed summer 2009. i have been driving with this issue since then although it is very hard to drive into the sun due to glare and i have desperately needed it. today, 06-29-2011 the passenger sun visor has now failed. so i went online to see if there is a recall and there is none. this is very common with the honda civic apparently and this needs to be corrected as the sun is awful down here along with any road glare due to precipitation. even the warranty replacements are breaking after they heat up.

rear suspension causes tires to prematurely wear out. after approximately 10,000 miles, i have to replace rear tires because of flat spots. the shop where i buy my tires will not even rotate my tires because of the flat spots. honda has done nothing to remedy the problem. the noise resulting from the flat spots is obnoxious and it is obviously a safety concern.

front suspension steering there is a clunking or snapping sound when turning or making a u turn left. took it to the honda dealer and there was no cause for the noise. the dealer replaced the entire left front assembly; left drive shaft, cv joint, hub and bearings. then the dealer checked the rack and pinion and found that they were not torqued correctly and was reset to factory specs. well one year later the clunking and snapping sound slowly returned. and while making slow left turns. it happens on and off. now its passed warranty.
