THE DASHBOARD AIRBAG LIGHT IS LIT INDICATING THE AIRBAG IS OFF WHEN I OCCUPY THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE SELLING DEALERSHIP CLAIMS THE AIR BAG IS FUNCTIONING PROPERLY AND IS DESIGNED TO WORK IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE SEAT BELT. THEREFORE, FORD IS TELLING ME I MUST LEARN TO LIVE WITH THIS HAZARD. I UNDERSTAND A DISABLED AIRBAG IS INTENDED TO PROTECT CHILDREN. I AM NOT A CHILD! I AM THE ADULT, CO-OWNER AND CO-DRIVER OF THE CAR. I WEIGH 90 LBS AND AM 5¿1¿. I AM IN JEOPARDY BECAUSE THIS CAR DOES NOT OFFER ME THE FULL PROTECTION OF THE CURRENT PASSENGER SEAT BELT/ AIR BAG COMBINATION. NHTSA WARNS, IN PART E OF ITS FORM REQUEST FOR AIR BAG ON-OFF SWITCH, THAT THE SEATBELT OPERATING WITHOUT THE AIRBAG, CAN ALLOW ME TO HIT THE DASHBOARD OR THE WINDSHIELD. FORD IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE THE FORD OWNER'S MANUAL SUGGESTS I SIT IN THE REAR SEAT. I HAVE OPTIMUM PROTECTION WHEN I DRIVE THE CAR. THIS 2014 FORD FUSION HYBRID DENIES ME, AS A SMALL STATURE ADULT, FULL AIRBAG SEATBELT PROTECTION WHILE OFFERING FULL AIRBAG SEAT BELT PROTECTION TO LARGER ADULTS. THIS GAP IN PROTECTION INCREASES MY RISK OF INJURY AND IS CONTRARY TO NHTSA¿S MISSION STATEMENT OF ¿PREVENTING INJURIES¿. I AM NOT AS SAFE AS I SHOULD BE IN THIS CAR. I CONTACTED THE DEALER IMMEDIATELY REGARDING THIS SAFETY ISSUE. THE DEALERSHIP¿S OWNER PROMISED ME THAT A FORD ENGINEER WOULD LOOK AT THE CAR. WHEN FUEL TANK IS FULL, THERE IS A LOUD AND DISTINCT NOISE ORIGINATING FROM THE BACK OF THE CAR WHICH APPEARS TO BE COMING FROM THE FUEL TANK. INITIAL INSPECTION BY FORD FAILED TO DETERMINE THE NATURE OF THE PROBLEM AS THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO REPLICATE THE NOISE. DRIVING THE CAR FOR SEVERAL WEEKS LED ME TO DETERMINE THAT THE NOISE WAS PRESENT ONLY WHEN THE FUEL TANK WAS AT LEAST 5/8S FULL. I BROUGHT THE CAR BACK TO FORD TWICE, BOTH TIMES WITH A FULL TANK OF GAS. TWO DIFFERENT SERVICE MANAGERS TELL ME THE NOISE IS "NORMAL" BUT THERE IS NOTHING NORMAL ABOUT IT. I'VE ESCALATED MY CONCERNS TO FORD'S CORPORATE OFFICES ON AT LEAST 3 OCCASIONS AND THEY HAVE NEVER ONCE RETURNED MY CALLS OR RESPONDED TO MY WRITTEN INQUIRIES. NOISES FROM THE FUEL TANK ARE, NATURALLY CONCERNING AND DISCONCERTING. MY FRIENDS JUST BOUGHT THE SAME CAR AND THEY HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED THE SAME NOISE SO I BELIEVE THAT THEY KNOW A PROBLEM EXISTS AND CORRECTED IT, BUT ONLY PROSPECTIVELY. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT (AFTER DIAGNOSING THE SITUATION FOR THREE DAYS) STATED THAT FORD CHANGED FROM HYDRAULIC MODULE TO AN ELECTRICAL MODULE AND THE PART IS ON BACKORDER. I WAS GIVEN A LOANER ON THAT DAY AND TODAY IS FRIDAY, MAY 30TH AND I DO NOT HAVE BACK MY CAR. I AM MAKING PAYMENTS ON A NEW CAR WITH STEERING PROBLEMS AND MY CONCERN IS WILL THE CAR'S STEERING PROBLEM BE RESOLVED WITH THE REPLACEMENT MODULE. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT SAFETY WHEN HIGHWAY OR EXPRESSWAY DRIVING. THERE ARE ENOUGH DISTRACTIONS WITH OTHER DRIVERS (TEXTING, EATING, TALKING ON THE PHONE, ETC.) WHEN FUEL TANK IS FULL, THERE IS A LOUD AND DISTINCT RATTLING NOISE ORIGINATING FROM THE BACK OF THE CAR WHICH APPEARS TO BE COMING FROM THE FUEL TANK. INITIAL INSPECTION BY FORD FAILED TO DETERMINE THE NATURE OF THE PROBLEM AS THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO REPLICATE THE NOISE. DRIVING THE CAR FOR SEVERAL WEEKS LED ME TO DETERMINE THAT THE NOISE WAS PRESENT ONLY WHEN THE FUEL TANK WAS FULL. I BROUGHT THE CAR BACK TO FORD TWICE, BOTH TIMES WITH A FULL TANK OF GAS. THE SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME THE NOISE IS "NORMAL" BUT THERE IS NOTHING NORMAL ABOUT IT. I'VE ESCALATED MY CONCERNS TO FORD'S CORPORATE OFFICE AND THE WOMAN I SPOKE TO TOLD ME THAT THE NOISE IS INHERENT IN THE DESIGN AND NOT A SAFETY PROBLEM, I TOLD HER THAT ANYTIME A FUEL TANK IS VIBRATING AND HITTING EITHER THE EXHAUST OR THE UNDER BODY OF THE CAR IT IS A SAFETY CONCERN. SHE TOLD ME THAT HER TECH HAVE INFORMED HER THAT THE NOISE IS COMING FROM BAD BAFFLES IN THE TANK, I TOLD HER THAT WHO EVER SAID THAT THINKS THAT I AM STUPID AND THAT I CAN'T TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A RATTLE AND A BAFFLE PROBLEM. SHE REPEATED IT NOT A SAFETY CONCERN. I TOLD HER THAT IT MAY NOT SEEM THAT WAY NOW, BUT YEARS DOWN THE ROAD WHEN THE FUEL STARTS TO LEAK FROM YEARS OF RUBBING IT WILL BE BECAUSE AT THAT TIME A FIRE OR EXPLOSION WILL HAPPEN. STEERING

i was driving home on a 2 lane hwy. and message came "steering fault service now" i called the dealership from the car and was told if the car wasn't doing anything abnormal, keep driving and bring it in monday. i arrived home safely turned off car and took pkgs. in the house. i came back out and started the car right away and the message was "loss of steering" and indeed no power steering. i called ford and they sent a tow truck driver and we took it to the dealership. it hasn't been serviced yet.

VISIBILITY/WIPER

while driving on an interstate, i turned my wipers on during a heavy rain storm. within a few seconds, the wipers stopped. took the vehicle to the service department the next morning with only 1000 miles. service adviser had the windshield motor replaced (after putting only 1000 miles on the vehicle). after getting the car back, the wipers squeaked awful during the next rain fall. took the car back and they replaced the wipers. unless it is raining steadily, the wipers squeak if it is just drizzling. not as bad, but they continue.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

while driving, i attempted to lower the rear right window. i felt the power going to the window, but the window did not lower. i attempted to lower window again, but then there was no power felt. fortunately there is no urgent need to lower the window during the freezing weather we are experiencing. i will be taking the car back to the service department again (now with 2000 miles driven) as soon as i get a chance and its warmer out.

the interior of the car has a toxic smell from the carpet causing occupants to have migraine. the dealership steamed the carpet and it is same if not worse, i just don't believe it is safe for long trips especially in cold weather when opening the windows is foolish. please advise on possible solutions. the dealership says there is nothing the can do to rid the car of the smell.

SEAT BELTS

i just leased a 2014 ford fusion titanium and after driving a few days, i realized that the seat belt is always running on my neck (driver's neck) - no matter what adjustment is set for the driver's seat and / or for the seat belt fixture, the belt is always running over my neck and i don't feel safe with this driving condition. i took the vehicle to the dealer (tom holzer ford in novi - mi) and the problem was acknowledge by the service manager - "this is the way the vehicle was designed and there is nothing that we can do about it" he said. i also contacted the ford customer service (complaint # [xxx]), because i don't feel safe driving a vehicle with the seat belt on my neck, and ford also told me that cannot do anything. bottom-line: it seems that the ford fusion 2014 has a serious design problem in regards to the driver's seat belt positioning, that is creating an unsafe driving condition, and ford is not doing anything about it. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

AIR BAGS

i am the adult co-owner of 2014 ford fusion hybrid. the dashboard airbag light is lit indicating the airbag is off when i occupy the front passenger seat. the service manager at the selling dealership claims the air bag is functioning properly and is designed to work in conjunction with the seat belt. therefore, ford is telling me i must learn to live with this hazard. i understand a disabled airbag is intended to protect children. i am not a child! i am the adult, co-owner and co-driver of the car. i weigh 90 lbs and am 5¿1¿. i am in jeopardy because this car does not offer me the full protection of the current passenger seat belt/ air bag combination. nhtsa warns, in part e of its form request for air bag on-off switch, that the seatbelt operating without the airbag, can allow me to hit the dashboard or the windshield. ford is aware of this problem because the ford owner's manual suggests i sit in the rear seat. i have optimum protection when i drive the car. this 2014 ford fusion hybrid denies me, as a small stature adult, full airbag seatbelt protection while offering full airbag seat belt protection to larger adults. this gap in protection increases my risk of injury and is contrary to nhtsa¿s mission statement of ¿preventing injuries¿. i am not as safe as i should be in this car. i contacted the dealer immediately regarding this safety issue. the dealership¿s owner promised me that a ford engineer would look at the car. to date i have not seen this representative this is an urgent safety matter. i request the nhtsa to direct the ford motor company to fix this airbag safety failure making me as safe as other adult passengers.

AIR BAGS

very shortly after first adjusting the steering wheel's tilt and telescope (which may be unrelated), during a short drive, many controls attached to the steering wheel stopped functioning. this included turn signals, cruise control, cell phone controls on the steering wheel, radio volume on steering wheel, and information display controls on the steering wheel. of these, the turn signals are probably most critical to safe operation. note that the horn, and the windshield wiper/washer, continued functioning properly. the next morning, a sales representative from the dealership found the vehicle in the same condition, but seemingly was able to restore service by "jiggling" the turn signal lever, indicating to me that it was resting very slightly forward of the normal at-rest position, and recommended service department investigate further. dealer service department found a circuit board faulty. part has been ordered for installation. in an abundance of caution, concerned that air bag deployment might be impaired were an accident to occur, the dealer provided substitute transportation pending repair.

2014 ford fusion titanium lost all electrical power on 03/03/2014 when my wife pulled into the garage. she said that she tried to remove the cd disc but it would not eject. i went into the garage and found that there was no electrical power at all. i then open the hood and removed the positive battery cable from the battery and reinstalled it after 1 minute and everything returned to normal. there has not been anymore incidents since today's date of 03/11/2014.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

bought a new 2014 ford fusion in october. when fuel tank is full, there is a loud and distinct noise originating from the back of the car which appears to be coming from the fuel tank. initial inspection by ford failed to determine the nature of the problem as they were not able to replicate the noise. driving the car for several weeks led me to determine that the noise was present only when the fuel tank was at least 5/8s full. i brought the car back to ford twice, both times with a full tank of gas. two different service managers tell me the noise is "normal" but there is nothing normal about it. i've escalated my concerns to ford's corporate offices on at least 3 occasions and they have never once returned my calls or responded to my written inquiries. noises from the fuel tank are, naturally concerning and disconcerting. my friends just bought the same car and they have not experienced the same noise so i believe that they know a problem exists and corrected it, but only prospectively.

STEERING

i purchased a 2014 ford fusion on march 24, 2014. my son was driving on the expressway and the steering wheel would not turn for him to change lanes to exit. the next day(may 6th) he took the car back to the dealer and they kept the car for two days. again, he was driving on the expressway from the dealer (may 8th) and the steering froze and he had to maneuver the car to exit the expressway. the next day he took the car back to the dealer. the service department (after diagnosing the situation for three days) stated that ford changed from hydraulic module to an electrical module and the part is on backorder. i was given a loaner on that day and today is friday, may 30th and i do not have back my car. i am making payments on a new car with steering problems and my concern is will the car's steering problem be resolved with the replacement module. i am concerned about safety when highway or expressway driving. there are enough distractions with other drivers (texting, eating, talking on the phone, etc.) without having to be concerned whether the steering wheel will lock up and cause an accident and injure my son or others.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

i went to my dealership in mexico complaining about the autolamp function, the autolamp is expected from the customer to avoid distraction while driving and conditions like tunnels are ahead it should turn on the lights as you enter or a couple of seconds later, however reality is that the headlights turn on after 13 seconds and that can't be reduced by the dealer, according to the dealer that's how the car was designed (not only for mexico) and that's a big security risk , in a very dark tunnel 13 seconds it's to late and people could die due to an accident. i encourage ford motor company to take real action to correct and recall this function to be corrected asap world wide, it's incredible that with such good car they missed this little but highly important detail.
