SEAT BELTS

customer feels that the seat belts and the side air bags are a hazard and are not safe in a rollover**cc the consumer stated the seat belts are not safe in a rollover due to the incorrect assumption that the roof will remain intact. the consumer also stated the air bags are not helpful because occupants may have their heads thrown against the side windows by a previous maneuver or impact, before a side impact, only to have their necks broken by an inflating air bag. the head restraints have supports that are too weak to prevent injury in a severe rear impact. *jb the consumer wanted to share his continued concern with the safety of automobiles. updated consumer letter 07/22/10*jb

i have had my vehicle since april 2007. since that time my check brakes and brake fluid light keeps coming on while driving. i pull over and pop the hood to check my brake fluid levels and it is okay. i mentioned this twice to the service departments when bringing my vehicle in for routine oil changes and they have not found anything wrong or a reason for this light to keep coming on in the dash gauges. has anyone else had a similar problem and if so what is the solution. could this be a relay or switch that is faulty. i would just like to not have this light coming on 10-20 times a day while driving because it is annoying to have to keep pushing the reset button on my dash. the red brake symbol does however stay lit once i press the reset button.

STEERING

2007 ford fusion - cracks in front subframe effecting steering yesterday i was informed by a ford dealer, don reid ford in maitland florida, that the likely explanation for the "notchy" feel in my steering wheel on my 2007 ford fusion is probably due to cracks at weld seams in the front subframe of the vehicle. i was told by another ford service tech that the issue could also be a bad steering column intermediate shaft as a result of this condition. this vehicle is 1 1/2 years old and so far the dealer is thinking it is not covered under warranty. i was told by this ford tech that the weld cracking problem is a "known issue" at ford and he agrees 100% that it is a safety issue. i can feel looseness / clunking in my steering when going over bumps and turning. this is not an alignment issue since, on the ford fusion, the front alignment is not adjustable. i am very concerned as to the safety of the vehicle and am being told it may cost over $1,000 to repair this obvious manufacturer defect. i first noticed this issue a few weeks ago on friday, august 1st while making a 3 point turn in a tight parking lot. the condition is progressively getting worse. please help.

sudden deflation and sidewall separation of a tire sidewall. vehicle e model 2007 ford fusion sel, 4cyl, tire michelin pilot sport mxm4 all season 225/50vr17 93v 10500 miles total on vehicle and tires. right front tire experiences a sudden deflation while driving on a city street at roughly 25-30 mph. the vehicle was stopped and the tire removed. the outer sidewall of the tire was fully separated and the sidewall cord structure was separated as well. the vehicle wheel rim was undamaged on the outer and inner faces. the tires had been checked recently for proper inflation and were in good condition. an inspection of the tread area did not show any signs of puncture that would facilitate rapid deflation. the vehicle has been used on paved streets almost exclusively and the streets in the areas of use are in reasonably good condition. no damage to the vehicle is apparent from the tire failure due to the low speed. no other property damage besides the loss of the tire. web search reveals other owners of ford fusions with this size tire have been experiencing rapid deflation failures and tread separations.

i own a 2007 ford fusion. putting this short i had a flat tire on drivers front on july 21, 2008 went to get it fixed the technician told me it was the valve stem, had to miss 3 hours of work , i didn't think much of it at the time . then on august 23, 2008 only one month later i had just entered the freeway heard my tire blow on the back right luckily had an exit right there slowly drove off the freeway found my tire blown, we were fortunate i didn't lose control and get into a crash, had to call aaa roadside service the technician again says it was a cracked valve stem, i'm like what again, next day i had to go purchase a brand new tire which i didn't have money for, then 2 days later august 27, 2008 getting ready for work in the morning my neighbor comes to my door tells me my drivers side rear tire was flat, i'm like what again, sure enough it was flat i had to call aaa roadside service again, this time i looked sure enough the valve stem was cracked and the technician verified this. i called my work and told them i'm going back to the dealer where i purchased the car and show them. i showed all documentation of all the other tire troubles and showed the tire that just went flat, im sure he knew about the recall, never said a word he said they would take a look and he was going to check the other front tire that hadn't been checked. 2 hours later he said no charge and he fixed both valve stems. so i am just trying to find out how to get my money back or compensated for all that i went through and the money i had to spend to buy a new tire and fix flats , it' like i had no idea about this valve stem recall till a friend told me she had just seen a report on consumer reports which led me to you. please let me know what can be done here. we were fortunate to have had no accident someone else might not be so lucky.

on my way to work, my tire lost air rapidly. when i made it to the tire shop they said all of the valve stems were worn and the flat tire was ruined and had to be replaced. i took it to the ford dealer since it's a 2007 fusion and they didn't know anything about it. i asked the dealer to replace the remaining valve stems and put an oem tire on it. i kept 3 of the worn valve stems and they match an investigation that is currently underway with shanghai baolong automotive corporation / topseal. the code on the valves in question are tr414. i called ford motor company to complain and they said they couldn't do anything until it's decided whether there would be a recall or not but they acknowledged the current investigation. total cost to replace 1 tire and remaining valves was $300. i also questioned ford corp on what communication they had with the dealers to spot these defective valve stems and they couldn't comment. my concern was that my car has been there for inspections, oil changes, and tire rotations and nothing was ever said to me.

as i approached a green traffic, the sun was in my eyes, so i moved the sun visor down so the sun was blocked but i could still see the traffic light. when i let go of it, it would not stay up against the windshield and hung straight down, blocking the traffic light. if it had turned red, i never would have know it. i had to drive with one had holding up the visor and one hand on the steering wheel. when i took my car in to the dealership i told them that the visor has never stayed up except against the car ceiling and we both looked at a 2008 model, which works fine. he said that they could order a new visor, but the replacement would be identical, so it wouldn't do any good. i feel that it is too dangerous to drive with one hand on the wheel and the other hand either blocking the sun or holding the visor up.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

the vehicle does not respond to the commands of the driver in a timely fashion and the response is unpredictable. while waiting to make a left turn from a four lane undivided city street, a pedestrian crossed in front of me in a crosswalk. after the pedestrian had crossed, i proceeded to make a left turn but the pedestrian did not stop. instead, he made a sudden turn to his right and proceeded across the crosswalk without looking. i stopped part way across the inside lane of oncoming traffic. the pedestrian stopped in the middle of the crosswalk, looked at me and waved while oncoming traffic approached. he then proceeded the rest of the way across the crosswalk. in order to avoid a head on collision from a car that turned left into the oncoming inside lane and raced toward me, i gave the accelerator a quick nudge part way down. the vehicle redlined the engine and burned rubber. the same input from the driver two days before when it was cold would have resulted in a sluggish response. i released the accelerator, and the vehicle continued to spin the tires on the dry pavement, propelling the car forward toward the pedestrian who was about one step from the sidewalk on the other side of the street. i barely managed to steer the vehicle away from the pedestrian and finish the turn with my foot off the accelerator. in general, the vehicle does not slow down for quite some time when i release the accelerator. the only way to slow down in a timely manner is with the brakes.

Reported in: CEDAR RAPIDS IA || Crash: N || VIN #: 3FAHP07157R

VISIBILITY

the windshield wipers fail to clear the windshield during heavy rain resulting in a nearly complete loss of visibility. while driving south on a freeway at night, it suddenly began to rain heavily. i turned the wipers on to the highest speed available. i quickly lost visibility and could not determine where the edges of the road were. i released the accelerator and the car did not slow down. i applied the brakes lightly, and the tailgating tractor-trailer vehicle (18 wheeler) passed me and continued on at the speed limit of 70 mph. the spray from the truck made it impossible to see more than a few feet in front of me. even after the truck was passed and i had slowed to the minimum speed of 45mph, i still could not find the edges of the road or see the lane markings. no setting of the headlights or fog lights helped. the amount of rain on the windshield is aggravated by the shape of the car, which directs the rain from the hood to the windshield and the long sloping windshield gathers more rain than older vehicles.

Reported in: CEDAR RAPIDS IA || Crash: N || VIN #: 3FAHP07157R

VISIBILITY:DEFROSTER/DEFOGGER SYSTEM

the defrosters take the air from the outside of the vehicle only. this pulls in exhaust gases during heavy traffic. setting the control to defrost and floor only allows temporary recirculation of inside air, but the car automatically reselects the outside air after a few minutes. the only alternatives that allow continuously recirculation of inside air do not put any warm air on the windshield. when driving is stop and crawl traffic in the winter, the driver must choose between breathing exhaust gases or fogged windows. this is a continuous problem, not a one day event. this is aggravated by the unshielded vent on the hood that draws in air from the outside and the shape of the vehicle which directs the exhaust gas laden air up over the hood to the vent. in sub zero weather, the exhaust gases tend to remain near the ground and the large windshield requires significant hot air to remain unfrosted at the top where the taller drivers need to see through.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS

the headlights are excessively directional and fail to light the road on low beam. when driving on a road with hills and curves, the headlights do not light the valleys when at the top of the hills and do not light the road sufficiently around corners. if the driver selects high beam, the drivers of oncoming vehicles are blinded, even if driving on a freeway with a wide median when the headlights are pointed across the median while driving around a curve. the only way to see potholes directly in front of the car at night is by turning on the fog lights since the front bumper causes a shadow in front of the vehicle, and the styling of the headlights prevents light from getting to the sides of the vehicle. this is a continuous problem, not a one day event.

Reported in: CEDAR RAPIDS IA || Crash: N || VIN #: 3FAHP07157R

POWER TRAIN

the vehicle response to the accelerator is unpredictable and always delayed. sometimes the car will interpret a small quick depression of the accelerator the same as flooring the accelerator. there is always a delay of two to three seconds before it responds at all. the same action can result in widely varying responses of the engine and transmission, apparently depending on the temperature of the air and engine. the accelerator is very touchy and seems to use only a small portion of the movement. that coupled with the transmission constantly shifting to set the engine speed at near idle in all but freeway driving makes manually controlling the speed within 5 miles per hour when near a shift point almost impossible. the constant shifting and refusal to slow down when the accelerator is released makes it impossible to manually control the speed of the vehicle accurately on hilly roads. this is a continuous problem, not a one day event.

Reported in: CEDAR RAPIDS IA || Crash: N || VIN #: 3FAHP07157R

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

the 2007 ford fusion developed erratic electrical power and starting failure. dealership found that the battery cables had essentially disintegrated from battery posts along considerable length of the cables, also destroying the battery with excessive corrosion and splitting the plastic cable sheaths. vehicle was only 2 years old but had 42,000 mi. a quick internet search immediately found 3 other 2006-2007 fusions with same occurrence, all just slightly over the 36,000mi warranty and not covered. ford has not issued a tsb, has not volunteered to cover any of the $428 cost. this is a clear quality control product failure, unacceptable on any 2-yr-old vehicle, and could have resulted in a fire or stranding situation.

TIRES

on 3/18/09, i had a tire fail on my 2007 ford fusion because of a re-called dill # 414 valve stem. i had to replace the michelin tire that had 10,487 miles on it. i also replaced the other three valve stems that were cracked (also dill #414). i am six weeks away from traveling from michigan to florida at interstate speeds of 70 mph. if this tire had failed at those speeds, i don't think i would have been able to control my vehicle to a safe stop. ford motor co. (gorno ford dealership in woodhaven, mi.) has no information about this problem. when i called tech international (clay johnson at 740-967-9015), he said that ford motor co. dearborn is well aware of this problem. this is a serious safety problem that could have resulted in a fatal injury. i have the defective valve stems in my custody.

TIRES

07 ford fusion required two leaking stems to be replaced since jan 09. 4/6/09 traveling on i-4 outside of tampa at 70 mph when the right front tire went flat, no pop or anything, just noticed a change in the road noise so i touched the break and it got louder. i did not lose control of the vehicle and got safely to the breakdown lane when the tread part of wheel continued to roll/bounce down the breakdown lane. a road ranger stopped and changed my tire for me, asked where i was going and told me to buy a new tire. purchased new tire for $278 from a ford dealer who told me to contact tire manufacturer for warranty. there are no obvious punctures in the tread, impossible to tell if any damage to the sidewall as there wasn't much left on the rim and couldn't tell on the tread part. i have the pieces in my possession. it would seem to me that after 2 tires going flat and stems having to be replaced the stem (which had not been replaced) failed and caused the flat tire. on 4/10/09 drove to work, came out for lunch left rear was flat and another stem had to be replaced. i'm not sure if when i purchased the new tire, they put on a new stem but according to the local ford dealer they all look ok as of today. unfortunately, i do not have the old stems.

i bought my 2007 fusion at end of march. since then i have noticed on a daily basis that when i am at a complete stop and try to start the accelerator is very touchy. i peel out almost 75 percent of the time. the gas pedal shouldn't be that hesitant or touchy. i am afraid to change my own oil which i have done all my life. i am afraid of driving right off the ramps. i am very afraid of merging into traffic at stop signs. especially this next year for the winter season. i had a few instances at the end of the snow season i couldn't even get going in my own driveway because of the over power. i would just spin out with the instant over acceleration. also at stop signs that were snow covered. (that has never happened with any other vehicles i have owned.) also the acceleration of trying to pass someone there is a major hesitation to switching from overdrive to drive and back again.

i drive a 2007 ford fusion. the car is a "beast" to handle on roads that have icy ruts. i live in minnesota and this has been a terrible year for ice. if i hit an icy patch with one side of my car and the rest of the road is free of ice, it feels like the back end of the car will spin and i will lose control. top speed if there are any icy spots is 25 to 30 mph. (the rest of the traffic passes me; i pull off to the side of the road to let traffic pass.) my husband and i went to complain to the ford dealership and were told by a salesperson that they are aware of the problem and have experienced that same "fishtailing" experience themselves. when asked why ford has not addressed this issue, we were told not enough people have complained. we have checked "blogs" on-line and have found that this is a common complaint from fusion owners. we were told at the dealership that "this is just the way it is" and there wasn't anything they could do about it. would you please investigate this issue? ford and its dealerships are sticking their heads in the sand even though they know this is a significant safety issue for fusion drivers.

when traveling at about 35 mph with a ford fusion se, v6 and automatic transmission, the engine stalls on hard braking, requiring the vehicle to be brought to a complete stop in the middle of traffic, shifted to park and restarted. since i was making a lane change before i realized that the engine had stalled, i was across both lanes while i was in park starting the engine. this could have lead to accident, either by not having power to maneuver or another car could have hit my vehicle while it blocked both lanes. the air temperature was just below 10 degrees, but the engine was warm. on restart, the engine idled at 1500 rpm, which makes stopping the vehicle difficult since the engine fights the brakes.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

i previously thought it was just my operation, the floor mat interfering with the gas pedal, or my imagination as it had happened twice before over the last 18 months. however, the incident yesterday was quite evident without any other outside influence. i had been driving in our rural area using the cruise control of our fusion. i tapped on the brake to disengage the control, and slowed to a stop sign. after traffic cleared i stepped on the accelerator pedal to cross the intersection. as i started to move, the pedal dropped noticeably from the sole of my shoe and the fusion immediately accelerated at a rate greater than my desire and not under my control. i immediately disengaged the cruise control via the steering wheel on/off button and all operation resumed to normal.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE

when backing up hill into a parking spot, the car does not obey the commands of the driver. since there is an excessive delay in the throttle, i end up releasing the accelerator completely when i need to slow down because the car does not slow down right away. the car then goes into a "hold" mode where it prevents the car from rolling forward. once it is in that mode, it does not respond to the accelerator pedal until about one second after the pedal has reached a level where the rpm of the engine would increase significantly beyond the holding rpm. due to the delay and lack of response during the first part of the pedal travel, the accelerator is down too far when the car finally releases the "hold" on the throttle and the car goes backward at a much higher rate of speed than desired. the only way i can back up hill safely is to apply the brakes fully with my left foot on the brake pedal, rev the engine up with my right foot on the accelerator pedal and control the speed of the vehicle by partially releasing brake pedal with my left foot while holding the accelerator pedal steady with my right foot. the brakes don't have a delay to them. the vehicle is a 2007 ford fusion se 3.0 liter v6 with 6 speed automatic transmission.

Reported in: CEDAR RAPIDS IA || Crash: N || VIN #:

SEATS

the seat does not support the back between the hips and the shoulder blades unless reclined, which is not a desirable driving position. the adjustable lumbar support pushes on the top and middle of the pelvis and results in pinched nerves in the back. the seat cushion has very hard, raised sides, the roof of the car is low and curved down on the sides, the car is low to the ground and the seat is well inside the vehicle. the end result is that if i am trying to get into the vehicle and my hip hits the side of the seat instead of the soft part in the middle, i pull muscles in my side. the assist handle is no assistance and it is actually a hazard in a rollover since it could cause serious head injuries. it is right next to my head with the power seat in its highest position (about the only position that allows access to the pedals and still provides support for the thighs). i am 5 feet 11 inches tall. i have injured myself several times trying to get in and out of this vehicle.

POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

while traveling from canyon to norris in yellowstone national park, i attempted to control the speed of the vehicle manually while climbing a steep hill, but found it impossible. the desired speed was 45, which is the maximum speed in yellowstone. the throttle has a delay of about one second, so it is continually 1 second behind the commands of the driver. the result is that the vehicle always overshoots the speed because the driver first expects a response from the vehicle, but gets none and continues to push the accelerator pedal farther down. when the vehicle reaches the desired speed, the driver lets up on the accelerator, but the vehicle continues to accelerate according to the command 1 second ago. the driver then continues to let up on the pedal because the vehicle has not yet responded to the command to reduce rpm. the transmission shifts up when the driver lets off the accelerator. the vehicle then undershoots the desired speed and the driver pushes the accelerator down again. the vehicle again delays its response and the transmission adds an additional delay of about 2 seconds. the next overshoot is worse. this oscillation continues until the driver gets frustrated and sets the speed control. the speed control still fails to maintain speed when the grade changes rapidly, but the slow down is much less and it recovers in a couple seconds and maintains speed the rest of the way up the hill. the driver then has to ride the brakes on the way down the other side of the hill in order to maintain speed, which releases the speed control. the driver then has to set the speed control when the vehicle reaches the level again. if the driver lets the vehicle continue to accelerate down the hill, the transmission will eventually downshift at about 48 miles per hour, but continues to slowly accelerate. continually trying to correct for the lack of control of speed results in an excessive distraction and continually takes the eyes of the driver off the road.

the dash panel on my 2007 fusion suddenly lit up - oil light, air bag light, etc. - and after stopping the car it would not start again. the battery cables (especially the positive one) were highly corroded. after removing the corrosion and replacing the battery it started. five weeks later it failed to start again. both times the radio and lights worked but the car would not start. i tried jumping it off, but it did not even try to turn over. had it towed to the dealership and they said the battery cables and 20 feet of cable wire were completely corroded and would have to be replaced. the car has fewer than 48,000 miles on it. i do not live in a high salt area either. apparently this is not under warranty either. i believe that substandard equipment was used and that there should be a notice sent out to other fusion owners to take any precautionary steps to avoid this ¿ if there are any. ultimately, i think ford should cover this repair. it is clearly due to shoddy cables and wiring.

i was driving with my fiance when we heard a loud metal snapping sound with a few dinging sounds. apparently the idler pulley snapped off and bounced around causing me to lose my power steering. it was a good thing i wasn't driving to fast or it wasn't two days later as we were supposed to be driving to fort knox, because it would have been worse with it snapping off like that going 70mph. had a friend help me get it home where i found the idler pulley with the bolt snapped 3/4 of the way down and the serpentine belt with a few marks on it from where the bolt rubbed against the belt. i've done some research and found out that has been happen for awhile now with other ford fusions. some said that they had this issue fixed and it happen again. i really think to be a safety issue that ford should fix because it seems to be an issue with either the bolt, the area on the engine block where the bolt sits, or even the tension on the serpentine belt itself causing the bolt to snap off like that.

on june 1st my wife was on i-20 west of ruston, la traveling to monroe, la. the car suddenly lost power and had no response on the accelerator. she coasted to an exit and pulled over. the engine wrench light was on. she turned the car off and called me to come help.when i got there the car started and i drove it home without incident. i have since taken the car in to jim taylor ford and was told the code indicated the problem came from the throttle body and it may have to be replaced. it has not happened again but i was told that other fusions have had the same problem and some of the owners have elected to replace the throttle for safety. this could be a major problem in traffic if and when it a happens again. something is faulty and ford should fix this problem.

i have been driving the less in the thirty days after purchasing it and it started making loud squeaking noise, i told the dealer about it and he said it wasn't anything major it does it when you first start the car. it continue to get louder so i had a certified person to check out the noise. when i let him listen to the car, he looked under the hood and noticed that the idler pulley was leaning to the side and that he didn't how know i could drive the car with the idler pulley leaning. i called the dealer right then and explained to him what was going on. he then told me that he couldn't do anything about it because it has no warranty. he suggested that i let someone else to put it on. when i did what he told me the person who checked out the said that it was broken and i needed to take back to the dealership. i had the car towed because i couldn't no longer drive it. the company told me that the person who checked out my car broke it. i pulled up the car fax on the car and found out that the idler pulley broke on the car a year prior before i purchase it. i want the dealership to be responsible for fixing my car.

my husband was driving and the gas pedal stuck he went thru 2 red lights almost hit a car pulled the e brakes stepped on the brake pedal put it in neutral hit the gas pedal to get it to unstick and nothing but it finally stopped. we just bought the car 2 weeks ago. we have 30 day warranty and extended. the dealer had it towed to a mechanic they hooked it up to there diagnostic machine and nothing came up so they took it to ford and nothing came up on there machine and test drove it and nothing happened. now they wont do anything because this "machine" says nothing they didn't even take it apart. so i have a disabled husband a 4 year old and 2 month old that i have to drive in this car. it is unsafe. what if it happens again and we really get hurt. i just want it fixed its a safety issue now. its like no one believes us. we are not trying to get rid of the car besides this we love the car. it took us a long time to find this car. but its unsafe we just want it fixed and replaced please help.

when backing out of a parking spot i depressed the brake pedal and it went straight to the floor. the car did not stop. i put car immediately into park and then pumped brakes. pressure seemed to return to the brakes so i proceeded to back out again, testing brakes consistently. brakes seemed to respond but seemed "soft" still. i drove car to mechanic without incident, thinking the problem was the master cylinder. mechanic informed me that the problem was not the master cylinder but rather the abs hydraulic control module and that he had seen this same problem with four other ford vehicles, two of them fusions. mechanic stated that when he looked up the symptoms i reported to him in his "identifix/oem" database that this problem came up associated with a technical service bulletin from ford, including the instructions for how to repair the problem. he could not find a recall notice for this problem, however. this appears to be a manufacturer's defect and i am perplexed as to why there is no recall. i will be contacting the ford motor company to investigate further. my mechanic repaired the problem which cost just over $2000 and did include him taking the car to a ford dealer to reset the abs and associate the repair with my vin. two days since repair and i have not had any brake problems.

i had purchased my 2007 ford fusion new and had a few oddities during the course of ownership. within two years of ownership i had a battery short out. at three years i had to have a hefty brake service done because of a clicking noise when the brakes were applied. i noticed at four years that when i would remove the key from the ignition and open the door, the car would chime as if the key was still in it. the dealer had no idea what caused the chiming and it happened sporadically. the biggest issue was in late november of 2011, i was merging on to the highway and going to pass a vehicle; my car began to rev really high, but i was not accelerating that much. i shifted to neutral then back to fifth gear still no accelerating. at that moment the check engine came on and i noticed that the car was dead and costing. after i stopped on the side of the highway, the car would not start at all. had it towed to the dealer, where they spent two weeks of tearing apart my motor. they determined that a bolt came loose releasing my timing belt destroying my engine. i purchased and extended warranty which saved me $7500 in replacement cost. after two more weeks i had the car back. i noticed belt noise when i started the car and the engine was louder than the original engine. within a month the car would not start again. the chip in that key went out, and when i took it back to the dealer i complained about the chiming and the belts. they informed me; the key needed to be replaced (costing $300 dollars), my belts were from the original engine and now stretched out needed to be replaced, and the starter was going out. the mystery of the chiming was finally solved. ford offered me employee pricing on a new car but would not by back my fusion. the dealership offered me nothing. this car was purchased and exclusively serviced there.
