ford freestar 2006 Complaints

AIR BAGS

dt: consumer's vehicle was involved in a car accident on september 19, 2005 while going 25 mph. upon impact, the air bag cover over the driver's side and passenger's side came out about and quarter of an inch; however, the actual air bags never deployed. on the driver's side it was a side impact and passengers side it was a head on impact. *ak

VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER

the factory issued wiper blades on the 2004 and 2006 ford freestar minivan do not work well. when wiping they leave major streaks across my line of vision. in some cases i have had to narrowly dodge accidents because i could not see. it doesn't matter if their is little, or a lot of rain or snow. if it is bad weather it is pretty much a guarantee that the wipers will not work. i have tried changing them to different style blades but it does no good. i believe this is a design problem with the ford wiper. perhaps the wiper is simply too light and "floats" when driving at freeway speeds. any speed higher than 35 tends to cause the wipers to smear rather than wipe. *nm

POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

i was standing at the rear of my sister's new 2006 ford freestar van. my 2 1/2 year old son was inside the van. the van was not running. my son climbed over the front seat from the back seat and pulled down on the shifter lever causing the vehicle to come out of gear and roll backward out of a graded driveway. the van struck my right leg and right elbow causing minor injuries. after getting the vehicle stopped i needed to know why the vehicle came out of gear, as this could've been a small child behind this vehicle instead of myself, the results of which would've been catastrophic. during my investigation of this circumstance; while i had assumed that you had to depress the brake pedal in order to release the shifter lever, i instead discovered the following: -- 1. if the vehicle is running and in park, you must depress the brake pedal to release the safety feature which prevents the shifter from coming out of gear. -- 2. if the vehicle is not running, you only have to turn the key one notch to release the safety feature which prevents the shifter from coming out of gear. you do not have to depress the brake pedal at all !!! i have since questioned many others to see if the same is true, and was shocked to discover that this is not the only vehicle in which this occurs. this is a very serious defect that the public isn't routinely aware of, and one that could potentially kill someone under similar circumstances. i have come to the conclusion that this supposed safety feature poses a false sense of security, as i have believed for many years that this safety feature prevented accidental shifter actuation. please look into this or make it known to the public about what could occur under similar (and all too common) circumstances. thank you for your time and attention to this very valid concern. i look forward to seeing a published warning, or perhaps even a global recall, that addresses this potential danger in the very near future. *jb

anti slip kicks in & the ground is dry, this has happened 6 times now. the transmission had to be rebuild on a new 2006 freestar. now ford has my van (since sept.27,06)waiting for the page, so it can be fixed.the anti slip kicks in when it wants to - i almost got killed twice. they are stating it is a senor in the steering column that overheats & causes the anit slip to turn on. i have asked for a new van, but i think they will not. the last incident was 9-27-06.

SEAT BELTS:REAR

we rented a ford freestar from a local rental company. today, my 10 year old daughter, who is 59 inches tall and weighs 71 lbs., was sitting in the middle row behind the driver's seat. she was appropriately restrained in the lap-shoulder belt only. i had to stop suddenly. while i would characterize it as an abrupt stop, it was not severe and there was no impact. i heard a "breaking" sound. my daughter exclaimed that her seat belt had broken. i pulled over to inspect it; and found that the upper shoulder belt anchor had become detached (unbolted) from the vehicle. i could not find evidence of breakage. the bolt seems to have simply come out. of course, this failure created considerable slack in the shoulder belt which i believe would have caused the vehicle to exceed nhtsa's head excursion limits. the freestar was manufactured in october, 2005. by the way, no one was hurt and i plan to contact ford tomorrow. i am a certified child passenger safety instructor and former child safety seat design engineer. *nm

the traction control system activates for no reason on perfectly good road conditions. the brakes come on hard, the gas pedal pushes back at you. it happened crossing an intersection one time i was almost broadsided. the dealer says it is an optical sensor on the steering column, light is somehow hitting it causing this to happen. we were told there is no fix for it right now just live with it. *nm

on the rainy evening of march 10, 2009, the transmission on my 2006 ford freestar with only 45,000 miles completely stopped running. i had just made a right turn onto an unlit residential street when my car just stopped moving. i was pushing the gas and hearing the engine change but with my car in "d" there was no motion. with the vehicle still running, i tried the other movement gears with no reaction. my car had just completely stopped on the road with no warning! thank goodness that was not a lot of traffic that night. had the vehicle towed to the ford dealership where it was purchased and the transmission was repaired by replacing the torque converter and whatever other work was required to get it working. they only gave me a 1 yr/12,000 mile warranty, which is just scary. it was in the shop for just over a week. have noticed that it now seems to occasionally hesitate while i am driving it.

i have a 2006 ford freestar that has been nothing but problems. twice i lost power completely while driving. the first time it wouldn't start so i had it towed to the ford dealership. they said it started right back up and it was fine now. this was in november of 2008. in january 2009 it died on me again. i waited a few minutes and it started back up. i took it to a different dealer the second time. they said there was water in my power control module (pcm) and replaced it. i have not lost power since then. i am now having some problems starting the van. the van has been in the repair shop a minimum of 30 times in 2 1/2 years but it is never the same problem so the lemon law does not apply in my state.

TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM

i have a 2006 freestar sel in 2008. i purchased it used at 57000 km mileage (canada). about a year after, a recurring issue was that the traction control comes on without warning even at high speeds. the net effect is that it quickly limits the speed to about 40 kph. once, driving at 100 kph, it came on and the transmission failed. i got the txn fixed but it still occurs occasionally/randomly. i got in touch with ford canada and they deny there is such a problem. however, a search of the internet found several owners of freestar with the same problem. i took it to the dealer but they cannot find a problem. one reference quoted a ford service bulletin that refers to the problem as a nuisance but not a safety concern. i and others do not agree. see link http://www.arfc.org/complaints/2006/ford/freestar/traction_control_system/problem.aspx i am also sending this to the canadian ministry of transportation. i think this is a serious issue which could have ended up in a serious crash.

we had our 2006 ford freestar transmission replaced back in late 2009 due to water getting into the transmission. on feb 21, we brought it back in to find that our transmission has yet again got water in it!!! we are lucky that this falls under the power train warranty, but what is going to happen next year when we are bound to encounter this problem again. ford tells us that we will have to pay for it ourselves. this is bs seeing as this is a recurring problem that they have yet corrected. if you initiate a complaint about a vehicle during your warranty timeline and they cannot remedy the problem, even after the warranty is up, then it should be on ford to correct it. tell me, when do these motor companies have to take ownership for their short comings? when my ipod kept having issues, i did not have to keep paying to get the issue fixed, i received a brand new ipod!!! motor companies should have stricter rules to follow seeing as we are putting lives at stake.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

i am experiencing problems with my 2006 ford freestar when it becomes wet. if i go through a car wash or drive in inclement weather the engine light starts flashing and the engine power starts becoming erratic, bucking and hesitating. when this first started happening i would have to let the van sit for a few hours and then it would run fine. the last few times it has happened it is taking days for the motor to get back to normal. i have had it at a shop, they gave it a tune up. the problem recurred and took it to a ford certified dealership and they ran diagnostics, charged me $100 and told me i needed a tune up which i just had done. took it back to the shop that did the tune up and they replaced the egr valves to the tune of $700. ran the car through the car wash and problem recurs, they have now removed the pcm module looking for moisture which they did not find, another $100. $900 later i am still struggling with the same problem and nobody has any answers. upon reading many complaints about this same issue on the web i am now reporting it to you. ford needs to recall this and make it right. it's extremely dangerous to be driving in inclement weather and start losing power to your car! we are now heading in to the wet winter months and i'm scared to death to drive my van.

on nov. 18, 2011 while on a trip of approximately 600 miles round trip this 2006 ford freestar shuddered a few times which was presumed to be rough road. on nov. 23 the van did not go into reverse. after a few tries it did slip into reverse. the following day nov. 24 the same thing happened. the van was in another town about 60 miles away, my daughter had borrowed it, so on dec.06, 2011 she took it to a ford dealership for diagnosis. the dealership gave me a paper stating the oss was bad. i picked up the van (after the ford dealership told me it could be driven home), and on the way home it started to jerk when changing gears while going up or down hills. the lights inside and out went out also. i took the van to a transmission shop and after they checked it over it was determined the transmission was bad. there was nothing wrong with the oss sensor. a washer had broken inside the transmission, the fluid was full of metal, bushings were worn, and gears needed replacing. i trust this transmission place totally and since i had experienced the reverse and gear jerk problems myself i felt this was the correct diagnosis. i had the transmission repaired. now, this may be reasonable for some 2006 vehicles which may had been driven hard, however.. this van had 56683 miles when taken to the dealership. this vehicle is used mostly for transportation for a disabled person. which makes it twice as frightening about the transmission. i keep thinking about the possibilities of breaking down miles away from home. when is it acceptable for a bought new, gently treated vehicle with 56683 miles on it have a bad transmission? even though it is 5 years old the mileage is not great. i cannot think what might have been if it had gone totally while on the road transporting a disabled person.

on 1/27/12 while heading out of town with my family on a busy highway at a speed of 72mph my van lost all power. the van was suddenly dropping speed with no prior warning at all. there were semis all around and thank the lord i was able to pull the van over to the side of the road out of harms way. once on the side of the road i turned off the iginition and waited a few minutes before trying to start again. the van started but, would not go into gear at all. i had to call a tow truck which costs me money i did not have and now to find out that there are many others out there with the same make, model and year vehicle that are having the same exact problem and nothing is being done about it by ford is crazy. this could have cost me and my family our lives and others that were driving around me. when is something going to be done.?! to have ford recall the '04 and '05 models for this exact reason, should make them realize there is something extremely wrong with this make and model vehicle. i purchased this vehicle for the family thinking of safety all along but am now scared to drive it once it gets fixed. this is death trap as far as i am concerned. *tt

after engaging the vehicle into drive, the vehicle went approximately 30 feet then suddenly stopped. the engine remained running, the vehicle just stopped and would not go in any gear. after towing it to the dealer, we were informed that the torque converter was bad. there were no warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel and no prior warnings of failure. the vehicle had been at the dealer for routine maintenance one week prior to the failure and the technicians reported no incidents of concern. the majority of the mileage on this vehicle are highway miles and there is not a situation of frequent gear changes. as there are many other 2006 ford freestar vehicle owners with similar complaints and occurrences, and the vehicle was built in 2005 (but not included in the 2005 recall), ford should recall this vehicle and others with similar incidences.

van started shuddering and shaking upon acceleration brought the van to a transmission shop and they told me the transmission torque converter was faulty and about ready to fail totally. the transmission repair shop replaced the torque converter and shaft in the transmission. i called ford and they told me they are currently only recalling the 2004's and 2005's. my van is a 2006 and according to the transmission shop it has the exact same defective components in the transmission as the 2004's and 2005's. ford needs to recall the 2006's. this repair cost me $1700.00 and i feel ford should have to pay for the repair on my vehicle. if you have a 2006 or 2007 and are having transmission torque converter issues you need to file a complaint with the nhtsa. so they can make ford recall the rest of the defective transmissions!

VISIBILITY

my ford freestar had been outside overnight and the windows were icy as the temperature was approx 30 degrees. i started the car and put the rear defroster on high for about 10 min before leaving for work. soon after, i was on the highway driving 60 mph when suddenly there was a loud implosion as the rear window shattered and most fell in! stunned and not knowing initially what had happened, i pulled to the side of the freeway and quickly realized that i needed alternate transportation to work and returned home to further assess my newly 'air conditioned' van. i contacted my dealer several days later and got the rear window repaired at my expense. despite a couple of mechanics suggesting that the combination of the icy condensation on the window and the defroster running on high caused the window to shatter, ford motors would not reimburse any of the expense ($260) for repairs. this van has never been in an accident and fortunately has otherwise been reliable. i am very disappointed that ford would not cover window replacement and examine the cause especially after reading that this is a prevalent problem with many of their vehicles. thank you for taking my concerns into consideration to continue to maintain safe vehicles for all on the road.

while driving home from work on a rural single lane highway with no shoulder, my 2006 ford freestar mini-van completely lost acceleration. i was traveling 70 mph and going up a large hill when everything just shut down. there was absolutely no warning, no lights, nothing! when pushing the gas to the floor, the rpm's revved but i had no acceleration. i coasted to a stop at the top of the hill, trying to maneuver the van off the road and out of the way of the 18 wheeler that was not far behind me. after trying repeatedly to get the transmission to engage, i had it towed to a ford dealership and was told the transmission needed to be replaced at a cost of over $3000. i had to take it back to this dealership twice to have them fix small things that they had not properly put back together. less than a year later, the powertrain warning light for the transmission came on and i had to take it back to a different ford dealership. i was told it was the transmission again, and because it was thankfully still under warranty i wasn't out any money, but i was without my primary vehicle for our family of 5 for almost two weeks. the transmission feels like it is starting to slip again, and i have taken it back to the dealership twice to have them look for the problem before it goes out, but i keep getting told it is nothing. when my husband rode with the mechanic to see if it would slip, the torque converter started shuddering, but the mechanic said, "it's just the torque converter shuddering, don't worry about it". now i am reading that a faulty torque converter may lead to more transmission trouble, but i feel the ford dealership is just waiting for the warranty to go out again so they won't have to fix it yet again. this is the only vehicle we have that will transport our whole family, and i'm not sure how safe it is for me to continue to drive it.

yesterday while traveling on interstate 30, our 2006 ford freestar suddenly made a loud revving up noise with the rpms shooting up for a second and then i had no propulsion. the motor was running, but all i could do was coast as far as i could to get to the shoulder. my husband and three young children were with us, and it was very scary to lose power like that and then to sit on the shoulder being shaken by every big rig that came by. we had to be towed to the nearest ford dealership and rent a vehicle to drive the 100 miles home. once home last night, we found info about the same thing happening to many other freestars and that ford is voluntarily recalling '04 and '05 models to replace the torque converters. what about the '06 models this is happening to? we were amazed at the stories we found identical to ours. will the 2006 models be addressed as well? when i heard the automated message from ford concerning the '04 and '05 models and how this issue does not affect safety because a vehicle can be coasted to safety, i was appalled. i wonder if they have tried that in interstate traffic consisting to a large degree of 18-wheelers barreling downhill on you as you try to get past a bridge to the shoulder while carrying your husband and three kids! and then to sit there not able to move one way or the other while more 18-wheelers fly by, feeling relief each time they don't hit you, trying to decide if we'd all be safer standing in the ditch! didn't feel so safe to me!

i was driving approximately 45 mph on busy highway, my ford freestar would no longer accelerate. looking in the rear view mirror, there was smoke coming from my vehicle. the engine light came on after i noticed the smoke, then my thermostat went all the way from c to hot in a split second. no warning, car smoking and my brakes and gas was not working. i tried to pull over safely and get out of the vehicle quickly. my van was engulfed with smoke, an ambulance pulled over to assist me. the car fire was put out and towed to a ford dealer. it was my transmission that blew. it was covered by warranty and fixed. i was told it was a bad transmission. one year and two weeks later, my ford freestar was not shifting gears, i was getting stuck, in reverse. when i shift to drive, it does not go forward. my car had to be towed again to the same ford dealer. i was told my transmission was filled with water and the 1 year warranty i purchased the year before was shorted by two weeks. ford would not honor my warranty due to it being over by 2 weeks time frame. so, i then purchased another transmission with another warranty. now in 2012, a year later, my transmission that i purchased last year is doing the same thing, getting stuck in gears, when i accelerate, my freestar jumps. every time it rains, this car stalls. when i took to my mechanic, he says this is a horrible car. poorly made and it should have been recalled. apparently it stalls in the rain due to the sealing from ford? why and how is this possible? this vehicle is a horrible safety problem. i am fortunate my children were not with me in the first car fire. when is ford or the safety council going to investigate this car? so in my vehicle, ford thinks there is nothing wrong with their customer having to replace a transmission 3 years in a row. no safety warnings or engine light warnings at all.

van was in motion on secondary roadway/county highway at approx 30mph. operator slowed vehicle for traffic and then attempted to continue on but received no response from the van. engine was operating and gear selector was in drive. the incident could be classed as near miss accident as other operators had to drive around the van which had come to a stop in the middle of road. ford diagnostics are that the torque converter has failed and has to be replaced. the symptoms and problem are the same as the 2004 & 2005 freestar torque converter recall. however, ford has not included the 2006 model year in the same recall.

i was traveling at a steady speed of 40 mph when i experienced instant and total transmission failure. the engine remained running and all subsystems continued to function but there was no power applied to the wheels in any gear. after being towed to the nearest ford dealership (lindsay ford in wheaton, md) the service department said that i needed a new transmission for $4,000. i eventually had the transmission repaired at a local shop for a total cost to me of $2,600. i learned that i had the same transmission problem that seems to be common to the ford freestar: a broken pump shaft caused the torque converter teeth to break off. it is obvious that this is a serious design flaw that remains uncorrected. ford should be held accountable and made liable for all failures and repairs related to this issue.

within the first year of owning this vehicle, we experienced intermittent problems with accelerating after a stop (either at a stop sign or red light or pulling out of a driveway). the traction control light would flash, and the van would not accelerate beyond 10-15 mph despite depressing the gas pedal to the floor. the only way to resolve the problem was to shut the vehicle down and start it again which clears the computer. there were several instances when we lost power while entering an intersection and were almost hit by other vehicles. we took the vehicle to two ford dealerships, neither of which found an error code or could replicate the problem. there was no rhyme or reason as to when or where the problem would occur. it may happen twice in one week or six months could pass without an issue. we were finally forced to sue ford under pennsylvania lemon law. approximately a year after the van was out of warranty, the van failed to accelerate while pulling out of my daughter's daycare. i drove to the ford dealership at 10 mph and left it running. the traction control light stayed illuminated for once, and a mechanic was able to pull an error code for a faulty abs sensor. i called ford corporate from the dealership and had them pull up the vehicle records. to their credit, they agreed to pay the $1200 bill for the abs sensor and another part related to the problem. i drove the van for another year and a half with no other abs problems. an employee at the dealership advised me that when no error codes appear during diagnostic testing, ford will not pay the dealership to troubleshoot. therefore, there is no incentive for the dealership to put any effort into fixing a problem...it just costs them money.

hello - i am wondering if the 2006 & 2007 ford freestar vehicles have been recognized for the serious safety hazard they present, and for recall as their 2004 & 2005 predecessors have? "2004-'05 ford freestar, mercury monterey recalled for loss of power without warning ford is recalling 205,896 2004-'05 ford freestars and mercury montereys because the torque converter output shaft may fail, resulting in sudden loss of power with no warning, according to the national highway traffic safety administration. ford will replace the torque converter on the affected vehicles. the recall is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2012. ford is recalling 205,896 2004-'05 ford freestars and mercury montereys "the torque converter output shaft may fail," said nhtsa in its recalls summary of the problem. "this condition results in a sudden loss of motive power with no warning, increasing the risk of a crash." ford told the federal safety agency that the supplier of the torque converter manufactured converters containing a pump shaft spline that did not consistently meet the specified heat treat requirements. as a result, some of the torque converters may experience worn pump shaft splines. nhtsa opened a probe into the issue in 2009. ford dealers will replace the torque converter. if you own a 2004-'05 ford freestar or mercury monterey, be aware that a recall is in the works." my 2006 ford freestar experienced this very same loss of power due to a torque converter failure on the highway, placing myself and my entire family in grave danger as i was forced to extricate the vehicle from the highway in heavy traffic with a complete & sudden loss of motive power. the 2006 & 2007 ford freestar & mercury monterey vehicles clearly suffer form this same torque converter spline failure and should be recalled by ford.

i was driving with my wife and 4 small children. we had just crossed a 4 lane highway, and just crested a hill, when i immediately lost power. the engine revved and the tachometer shot up. we were on a small 2 lane highway with a very small shoulder. it was extremely dangerous, as vehicles were coming over the hill, and we were still slightly on the road. i had it towed to a shop, and they explained it was the torque converter. i did some research and discovered that ford recalled the torque converter in the 2004 & 2005 ford freestars due to safety. i also discovered that the 2006 freestars used the same torque converter. i don't understand how the same torque converter used in the 2004, 2005 & 2006, but the 2006 is not a safety issue. i called ford and the "customer service reps" were extremely unhelpful and rude. they couldn't explain to me the why this was not included in the recall, and when she couldn't answer me, she hung up on me. unbelievable.

while traveling on the highway on a curve we lost all power to the wheels. the engine would rev but the vehicle would not. we ended up coasting to a stop in the middle of traffic. this caused several cars behind us to lock u their brakes and two of them collided. we were lucky in that a nice person had a tow strap and pulled us out of the road and to the off ramp. my wife and i and our 4 year old son was in the vehicle at the time and we all could have been killed. the vehicle was towed to the dealer who informed us that the 2004 and 2005 freestars had been recalled for the torque converter splines which will strip and cause loss of power. our vehicle however has not been recalled and in addition to almost dying we paid $1918.32 to have the vehicle repaired! and we were without a car for almost a month. this defect is going to kill someone it is only a matter of time! i don't understand why it gets fixed in the earlier models but the owners of the 2006 are stuck with the possible death trap.

on returning home from an errand in our 2006 freestar, my son attempted to put the gear into drive, but vehicle would not move into forward, nor backwards in reverse gear. this occurred suddenly without any warning. the car was then towed to porter ford in newark, delaware and it is my understanding from the service department the transmission simply failed. after some research, i found this to be a very common characteristic of 4f50n transmission failures and there are an abundance of published complaints. had our transmission failed in a tunnel or on bridge, it could have been catastrophic possibly triggering a major pile up. clearly such a failure presents a risk to motor vehicle safety. in 2012 ford motor company submitted a defect information report affecting the 2004 and 2005 freestar (nhtsa action number ea09016). it is regarding a defect in the performance of the 4f50n transmission. this same transmission is also in 2006 and 2007. why is this action not extended to other vehicles with this defective transmission?
