POWER TRAIN

i bought my ford explorer 2014 on july 1st 2013. on august 1st, 2013, my car did not move forward while i started the car and put it to 'd' (drive) in a parking lot. instead, the car went backwards while i stepped on gas. i was very confused, and thought it was my illusion. so i stepped on brake and checked the drive panel, the light for 'd' is on. then i switch to 'p' and after a few seconds put to 'd' again. however, my car still went backward and my rear bump hit the front bumper of another car which park behind mine. then i got confirmed that my car was malfunctioning. i was 100% sure that the gear of my car was in 'd', since i did not see the back up mirror on from the lcd display, and the indicating light of the gear was 'd'. and my corporate parking lot is very flat. after that, i turned off my explorer, and went out to check if there is damage to the car that i hit. then i restart my explorer, put gear shift in 'd' and it went back to normal. i could not believe it happened to my new car purchased only about a month. this problem made me panic. what if the problem happened again in a busy street? what if there are pedestrians in the parking lot when my car was moving backward but it supposes to go forward? i hope some authorities could help investigate the problem, and alert the manufacture and other owners for similar questions.

purchased 2014 ford explorer july 20, 2014 - july 26,2014 - i was pulling away from drive thru pharmacy and my dash lights went black. took my vehicle into service the next morning - they could not find anything wrong. my vehicle has been back 6 more times. once again for loosing all dash lights driving down the road - since then, my lighting in my vehicle does not light up as it use to. sometimes my dash lights come on when opening the driver door, sometimes they do not - sometimes my lcd screen will light up, sometimes it does not. the dealership has replaced the instrument cluster once, but i feel there is still an issue. it all my dash lights lit up for the first 6 days of owning the vehicle, why would they not all light up now after the incident of losing the dash lights??? i have asked for a replacement vehicle - as after speaking with an attorney i have a lemon law claim, a safety claim, and a warranty claim. if my vehicle does not get replaced or some money back from ford - as i have drove my car for 13 full days out of a month - i will be taking this to court as i can only see further issues down the road.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

when driving on rural unlit roads, the headlights at times light up less than 3 vehicle lengths and or blind oncoming drivers when using low beams. the issue appears to be associated with the recent headlight design which uses a "projector style" lens incorporating a "high beam" bulb and a shutter to create the low beam by cutting off the top portion of the beam. there is "no" light above the cut-off line so when driving down an undulation and/ or during braking, the light beam aims down relative to the road. when going up an undulation, the beam cut-off moves up and shines the uncut-off beam into the eyes of oncoming drivers. additionally, the headlights have no light onto the shoulder above headlight height so roadside traffic control signs and pedestrians are not illuminated. situation has been observed by dealership salesman and technician who expressed disbelief. dealership management and manufacturer customer assistance center have advised condition is "normal and acceptable" even though they have not observed the condition and have refused to do so. no service actions are to be performed per the technical hotline. other conditions presented by this design are also present creating additional lesser issues. condition is ongoing since first being observed on first night drive.

VISIBILITY/WIPER

i purchased this vehicle about a month ago. driving home, 2 1/2 hours away from where i purchased it, the sun was hitting my front windshield. i noticed tremendous amounts of tiny shiny particles all over the windshield. it was very distracting and hazardous!!! i checked the following day and the entire windows have the same thing. i was told by the dealership that it's normal. i have had 3 other ford vehicles in the past 4 years and never had this problem. it is very very hazardous to me and i think that they should not be making windows like this and they should recall and replace these. i am paying alot of money for this vehicle and deserve to be happy and be able feel completely safe driving it.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

head lights are not focusing correctly. when u go around curve, lights show ahead half way, but it is pure black around curve. we live in the mts. with lots of hills and mts. it is scary!! you could kill a child or animal without seeing them in the pitch black. also, u cannot see signs on the side of road unless u put your bright lights on, which really tees off car in front. we just bought the ford explorer in dec.. have taken it to two dealers,. the one we bought it from did raise the lights, but said nothing else can be done. i believe before ford will have a recall, someone will be killed! praying it won't be us. please help us find someone that can help. engineers should know about this scary problem! thanks! tl* the contact rented a 2014 ford explorer. the contact stated that he attempted to open the rear cup holder but four of his fingers became stuck inside of the plastic holder. the contact stated that he had to pry the holder open in order to release his fingers. the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection. the vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 10. the vin was unavailable.

the instrument cluster lcd display screens to the left and right of the speedometer malfunction. they will randomly turn off for approximately 5-60 seconds while driving. the flashing screens can be a great distraction while driving during the day and especially at night.

the explorer sport (v6 twin turbo ecoboost) started leaking sulfurous smelling vehicle exhaust fumes (possibly cyanotic ) into the car which made the occupants feel unwell . ford have a fix that they do not advise customers about so the fume issue is known to them ( tsb 12-12-4 ). this fix has been performed yet the odor persists in certain circumstances. we have little confidence that the problem has been properly resolved and we have little confidence in driving a car with this type of fault. it is disturbing that oxides of sulfur and hydrogen sulfide can only be smelled within certain concentration limits and that the "nose" becomes insensitive to them at higher concentrations. other people are suffering the same problem and i think it s only a matter of time before a driver becomes incapacitated and has a serious accident. if this has not already happened. many other reports of this problem on various websites.

to avoid hitting another vehicle that illegally came into the lane i was entering (they were driving on the shoulder), i had to take evasive action, which caused me to turn my vehicle into a curb. at the time, i was traveling 15 to maybe 20 mph. after hitting the curb, my vehicle came to a stop and upon inspection i discovered that the lower control arm had completely broken in half. my vehicle was towed to a local dealership, where they subsequently serviced the vehicle, which i picked up on march 15, 2014. however, within 100 miles of driving, multiple system errors occurred, and my steering went out. the dealership is now saying there was apparently an issue with the steering gear assembly, and that they will be able to further diagnose upon replacing that part. my concern is the safety of the vehicle and specifically that i do not think a control arm should snap in half at that speed, particularly in a suv that has an upgraded suspension as part of the trim package.

i am pasting from a parts of a post that i made on 4/2/2014 @ 11:06am at www.blueovalforums.com with the topic being: "major concern/issue with 2014 ford explorer sport": this for the 2014 ford explorer sport with v6 3.5l ecoboost (twin turbo) motor. about a month after owning it, i was traveling on the highway....i was traveling about 60mph ....i signaled to get over and gave it gas to speed up moderately to about 75mph or so. when i pressed on the gas the car basically almost stalled on me...it wasn't a transmission trying to think which gear to shift into issue, it was a straight choking of the gas and stuttering/hesitating until i let off the gas 2 times or so and then press down on the gas again and it takes off, but it a noticeable lose of power.this has happened now 4 times with this past weekend 3/30/2014 being the most recent. however the highway speed was the only high speed incident. the other 3 times that it occurred were all in town, on one of them i was making a simple u-turn from a stop and when i pressed the gas (not heavily) to get up and out of the turn it stalled. the other time was passing to another lane and giving it some gas to speed up. this past sunday i was traveling on a 2 lane road then changes to a 1 lane road approx. 100 yards after the stop lights. i was stopped behind a vehicle and when we started moving the vehicle in front was only going about 20-25mph in a 45mph zone. so i signaled and saw a van in the lane about 100 yards back so i pressed on the gas to get some speed to pass him before the lane ended and again nothing crazy just to get up to 45-50mph or so and the darn thing stalled on me again! the big concern i have now is that the family and i are planning on a cross-country road trip this summer from may 24-june 10, 2014.

for a little over a month my wife and i have been smelling gasoline periodically around the car. the last time i filled up i remember checking for a leak because the smell was so strong. that same night i was working around the vehicle and heard a sound coming from under the car. it was a significant amount of gasoline draining on top of the engine exhaust pipes and my driveway. it looked like the gas tank was leaking from a plastic fitting, periodically releasing about a cup full of gasoline. we have since taken the car into the dealership and they have identified the issue as an overflow component that is defective. i wanted to write an incident report with nhtsa because this is an extremely dangerous situation that i was lucky to catch. the car is my pregnant wife's daily driver along with my daughter as a passenger, so it really freaked me out to realize what could have happened! i am concerned that this situation may occur with other 2014 explorers and their owners not realizing the leak before a catistrophic event happens. the gas leak could easily go unnoticed, as we did not realize the leak until a month after the first warning signs (gaseline smell). after some research i found that the 2013 explorers had a recall on the fuel pumps, which could be related to this issue.

STEERING

luckily we were coming to a stop anyway when we lost power steering. loud warning beeps with a message saying "power steering assist faulty" appeared. we were able to stop and start the engine to reset this, but this is a serious safety issue. we took our new 2014 ford to our cullman, alabama eckenrod ford dealer and they are stumped. come to find out (thanks to google) this problem has been around since the 2011 model. we no longer feel safe driving this vehicle as we commute 45 miles to work and 45 miles home everyday.

SEATS

we rented a 2014 ford explorer from avis over memorial day weekend. my 10 month old daughter was in the second row rear-facing in her diono radian rxt car seat (sitting on the right side of the suv). when i pressed the lever to let the left side seats down to put my two year old into his car seat on the third row, the spring-loaded seats landed on her leg, twisting and crushing it. now she has a broken tibia! there is a serious flaw in the design of these seats. they are very heavy and are spring loaded so that they fall very hard when you press the lever. i do not believe they accounted for children sitting in rear facing car seats when they designed this vehicle, it is like a booby trap waiting to happen and it needs to be recalled.

exhaust gas is getting into the cabin when the car accelerates over 3200 to 3500 rpm. ford says that the gas is not exhaust gas, but a strong order that is not harmful. they will not tell us what chemical the order is. when i drove the car i was experiencing asthma and heart palpitations. the dealership found that it had the 2013 explorer parts in it and changed them out per the tsb 12-12-4. it still did not help. another post said that they did use a monitor in their car and it was exhaust. when we pass a car or farm machinery or enter onto a freeway, the exhaust smell is suffocating when it enters the car cabin. my fear is that the exhaust could be coming into the cabin all the time, but we can't smell it until it gets to a concentrated level. ford said that the engineers are working on it. so i have purchased a $45,000 vehicle that i can't drive.

was sitting in my new ford explorer 2014 sport, when heard a loud pop like a gun.. got out and walked around car to see if something hit me.. nothing! started to drive away at around 20mph.. started to hear road noise coming from sunroof.started to retract shade when noticed glass fragments falling, closed shade pulled over and took pictures.. contacted ford.. and have been told something must have hit the sunroof? like what i said a meteor!!! they laughed and said i should contact my insurance co. but thats fraud i said…again they laughed.. come on ford stand behind your craftsmanship or get another owner who will… very disappointed… so what to do now?

my transmission would not shift gears. this is the fourth time this has happened. as soon as i put in in drive the vehicle did run but would not shift...i was stuck on a mountain road unable to pull over and my rpm's were pegging without my transmission shifting into 2nd gear. i almost got rear ended. i was only able to go like 15 miles per hour, my car started smelling like it was burning and the engine was stressed. when i was able to finally pull over i had to put the car in park turn it off, turn it back on and then it worked fine. again this is the fourth time this has happened. i called the ford dealer, for the fourth time and they said i could bring it in but if it didn't act the same way with them there isn't much they can do. not the answer i wanted. i have a neighbor who has the same vehicle and it has also happened to her. there is obviously a systemic problem here.

when driving my 2014 ford explorer at any speed and on any terrain, the exhaust fumes enter into the cabin of the vehicle. the odor is extreme, causes headaches, nausea, and tends to burn my eyes as well as my granddaughter, who is with me most of the time. because there have not been enough people complain of this problem, and because ford has not recognized that there is a problem, my dealer was not going to attempt to fix the problem. finally they have agreed to spray the under part of the exhaust with a rubberized sealant that was used on the 2013 models for the same problem. if this does not work, which i have read was not successful on the 2013 , i don't know what to do. the exhaust order is horrid and i fear the health implications that may arise.

my 2014 ford explorer lets in an extreme amount of fumes into the cabin of the vehicle during heavy exceleration. i have to put all four windows down for a good amount of time before i am able to clear the cabin of the fumes. my first complaint at the local ford dealer happened 6 weeks after leasing the vehicle. i have had the vehicle for 10 mos. now and have only 5500 miles on it because the fumes are so bad that we don't dare drive our pets in the vehicle or ourselves because we get sick and suffer from headaches and nausea from the fumes in it. unfortunately we are trapped in a lease and the ford dealership will only do a trade in value on it. so i cant even sell the vehicle for what its worth because of the lease. can't afford that kind of loss because i traded in my toyota 4 runner in to get the monthly lease payment down. won't get that 8 grand back on trade in. heart breaking because this is my dream truck, but it is obviously very defective.

when i accelerate immediately after turning on engine between 10-20 mph my car will slip out of drive into manual. this happens randomly, and has happened for the 2 other drivers of this vehicle. i have to stop, move gear shift to either neutral or manual and switch back to drive, for the transmission to then remain in drive. it has happened at least 25 times-my vehicle now has 16,000 miles on it. i took into ford dealership and after 2 days they could "not simulate" what was causing it and told me to "take a picture of the display screen" when it happens again so it could be simulated. they told me i was hitting the controls on the steering wheel! i am not hitting the controls on the steering wheel they made a vehicle with faulty power train and the computer can't tell them how to fix it! i was able to quickly snap one picture and will try to get another one prior to taking into dealership again.

while approaching an intersection from the south, a car crossed the intersection in front of us, traveling east. i applied the brakes but not in time to avoid hitting the car broadside. front airbags deployed as did the side air bags on the driver side. the airbag under the dash on the passenger side deployed also. my wife, who was seated in the front passenger seat, suffered a very serious cut on her lower leg, just a few inches above the ankle. it is oriented primarily circumferential for at least 180 degrees around the top and sides of her leg. the wound cut to the bone and required multiple layers of stitches to repair. her doctor says the blistering around the cut appears to be consistent with a burn. there was no car fire, so we think that the cut and burn were likely from the air bag. there was no visible damage to the car in the passenger leg area. no glass was broken.

first incident: parked car at gas station fuel pump, when we got in to move the car it did not have power steering. wrestled the car to the front of the gas store and went inside, when we retuned to the car and started it, the power steering worked. second incident: july 18,2014, same thing happened after a stop at a store. power steering completely out advance track light stays on. had to get towed. fix took four week work days. the invoice says eb5z*3504*a gear asm-steering was replaced.
